If you could have any Coach

I don't know enough about Steelers football to judge one way or the other where Cowher will be next year. Maybe this is a dumb question. But if Cowher were to book next year who would you have as the coach of the Steelers if you could choose anyone in College or Professional football?

hmm...
Interesting question Skin Patrol. Going to have to think about that one for a bit. I don't WANT this to happen by any stretch of the imagination, but I could possibly see us hiring Dave Wandstedt from Pittsburgh. He grew up in Pittsburgh and has done a pretty decent job with the Panthers. Now, let me restate that his is NOT what I want to happen.

Wanny
Interesting idea, I've never cared for the guy as a head coach and can't see how anyone would want him with his history. A lot of people like the idea of a hometown guy and who knows it could be the right situation at the right time.
How about Jeff Fisher if the Titans were to let him go?
I don't see Cowher leaving like that though. Ben should get his head straight both physically and mentally and the team should contend again next year. I think Bill will give it another go.
hit him in his earhole

hmmm
usually not a fan of college coaches going straight to the pros but I'd like to see Tressel from Ohio State.  No chance it'll happen though. That guy has one of the sweetest coaching gigs in football.

It will be Wisenhunt
I think he didn't take the Oakland job because Cowher told him he was leaving and he'd be the guy the Rooney's wanted.

hmm..
That makes sense I suppose. But, I still contend that Cowher will be unsatisfied and return for at least another year.

nice question
When I got to thinking about this, I would want a dedicated coach who is focused on defense.  I feel that is where we need the most improvement and dedication for our team.  I must admit, I don't know many coaches names or schemes off the top of my head so I kind of suck at this question.  I know I don't like Wannstedt (overrated) I love Charlie Weis but it'd take a prayer!  I think Cowher is already out in his head and thats affecting the coaching and devotion of our players...look at our offensive line!  I'd like to see Parcells put some discipline back into our players!  BIGTIME, LOOK AT DALLAS!

Dallas?
Dallas has been one of the most undiscuplined teams in the league this year.

Their resurgence has everything to do with Romo and little to do with Parcells. Before Romo, they were in complete disarray.

Parcells is okay, but he's not the myth he's made out to be.

eh
undiscuplined=undisciplined, of course.

Parcells
last coaching job will be in Big D. After he's done there, he's done period.

Is this a "what if" type of question...
or do we have to use reality as a basis for our answers?

Basically, can I answer in historical terms of any coach of all time or are you asking a specific question based on the very real possibilites in professional coaching these days to replace Cowher if and when he might choose to retire and/or leave?

by TexSkins on Nov 30, 2006 7:27 AM EST reply actions

Hypothetical
but not historically so. You can't have Vince Lombardi.

Damnit...
and good guess as to my coach...

I might have taken the 1957 era Giants coaching staff alltogether... Lombardi at OC, Tom Landry at DC...

Of the coaches still coaching today...  I like Belichek so I'd say either him or Mangini (I know I misspelled both their names) because they're about the same coach, IMO.

I'd take Pete Carroll.

Of the coaches already fired, I like Mike Shula.

That's my list for now...

Parcells
I'm going to have to disagree with you there.  He's done some revamping to that team.  Their "D" is still pretty nice with minimal numbers of playmakers on it. I'd like to think we have more talent than they do on "D"

Minimal number of playmakers?
You are kidding, right?

How many first round draft picks are on that side of the ball?  Two from last year alone.

Roy Williams, DeMarcus Ware, Marcus Spears, and Terrance Newman are all young first rounders...  Hell, former first rounder Aaron Glenn is a backup.  Jason Ferguson and Greg Ellis before he went down are savy vets t give leadership...  Ayodele is having a hell of a year...  All these guys make big plays, and are therefore playmakers.

you're nuts
Cowboys have way more talent and playmakers than the Steelers on defense, not even close.

tex
you're right on roy williams, i can't argue that at all.  and DeMarcus ware, but I must admit i know nothing about spears and newman.

by Mikey on Dec 1, 2006 10:03 PM EST reply actions

Spears is a DL
who went in the first round a few picks after Ware. (ware went 11th, Spears went 20th out of LSU.)

He's not the same type of 3-4 rush end, but he's a big body guy who eats up the run and plays the pass relatively well.

Terence Newman is their version of the shutdown corner, though I would not even think about putting him in the Champ Bailey category.  he';s just that much better than the other guy (Henry, I think.)  But he's most dangerous as a punt returner, where he has the ability to score every time he touches the ball.  Same goes for when he gets an INT.  He has 12 INTs and 3 Forced Fumbles in this being his 4th year out of K State.  He has 12 punt returns for an 8.6 average this year in his first year of return duty.
