Steelers Announce Three Finalists To Replace Cowher

This post is bumped from the diaries. My commentary in the UPDATE section after schnifin's original post.

Steelers narrow search to Russ Grimm, Mike Tomlin, and Ron Rivera.

I'm leaning towards Tomlin or Rivera. I still don't get why we would want Grimm as head coach. If they wanted to stay in house then Whiz was the man.  Grimm has never been a coordinator and as a position coach...  let's just say the offensive line has an awful lot of talent for how many times they let the franchise QB get drilled.

I'm not sure who I'd like between Tomlin and Rivera. It will be interesting to see how they would work with LeBeau and what kind of changes they would want to bring (get rid of the 3-4?). Also who becomes the next offensive coordinator? Whipple and Arians seem the logical in house guys (although Whiz might want one or both of them in AZ) and I could see the new head coach wanting his own guy. I'm all for getting the head coach from Boise State as our OC but that's just me...

Update [2007-1-16 0:4:41 by SteelerFan]: Thanks for the report, Schniffin. Personally, I'm thrilled with these finalists. I can't decide whether I like Tomlin or Rivera more. Tomlin's got that Cowher intensity that I'd love to see stay with the organization. Rivera's no slouch, either - the Bears defense has been devastating since he took over.

As for Russ, as much as I like him as part of the Steeler family, the more I think about this, the more I think Pittsburgh's headed outside the ranks to get a coach. My best guess? Pittsburgh gives Grimm and Tomlin a second interview this week, waits to bring in Rivera when the Bears lose, then quickly moves to make a decision after that. For us, that means we gotta wait for the Bears to lose.

Unless... Tomlin knocks off Rooney's socks. Which, from what I know about him, may just happen. We'll be on top of it as it develops.

On the radio this morning
Clayton said it is now down to Grimm and Rivera and that they will likely make an offer to Grimm this weekend.  If he turns it down they will wait until the Bears season is done and offer it to Rivera.

I think...
The organization makes a bad move overlooking Tomlin if this is true.  But stranger things have happened.  I have faith in the Rooney's and I don't believe they are in to making rash decisions.  That said, I don't think Grimm is the right man for the job.  Either way, i'll be cheering for those Pittsburgh Steelers come gameday.

"we gotta wait for the Bears to lose"
Next season could be a little far off to get a new coach.....
Not sure if Rivera has enough experience yet to make that step up but I'm leaning toward yes.
Grimm has been on teams' lists the last couple of years yet no takers. I wonder if he ever gets a shot and if he's worthy of a shot somewhere. We shall see I guess.
hit him in his earhole
