Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cleveland Browns Open Thread

First place in the AFC North is at stake, and the Browns are in town. Sounds weird saying that, but there's no denying Cleveland's an improved team over the last several years.

We've gone over the keys to the game and discussed how the Steelers might go about trying to break down Cleveland on both sides of the ball. Nothing left to do but get out your Terrible Towel and enjoy what I hope will be a great game for Big Ben and the Steelers. Use this thread to talk shop with yinzers. Head here for perspective from Browns fans.

Go Steelers!

jeez
the tight ends are really struggling with their assignments today

by schnifin on Nov 11, 2007 2:13 PM EST reply actions

dammit
these flags are killing us, hopefully we can get it together at the half

by dcfan85 on Nov 11, 2007 2:19 PM EST reply actions

yea
that TD drop was real big.

I do think
We can still win this game. No need to abandon the running game either in the second half. Parker's had plenty of room to run.

by Michael Bean on Nov 11, 2007 2:36 PM EST reply actions

Yeah
he's got like 74 yards on 11 carries so far

Tomlin
Remember back to the first drive when we accepted a penalty inside the 10. It was 2nd and 8 and they passed incomplete. We accepted the flag and made it 2nd and 13 instead of 3rd and 8. I thought it didnt make much sense. An extra 5 yards for a FG attempt meant nothing from that distance, and they were methodically moving down the field. Why give them two more chances?

Bruce Arians
is really worrying me. Almost every 1st down call was a run up the middle, no attempt to capitalize or use deception at all. The early reverse was a classic-case of out-thinking yourself, and he almost gave away the game on the last offensive series.

Great second-half by both units, despite the offensive play-calling. ST is going to ruin the season - watch.

Ben
absolutely carried this team today

by schnifin on Nov 11, 2007 4:18 PM EST reply actions

Definitely
Steeler-hater of note Boomer Esiason just gave him some effusive praise.

He did have some poor throws (Ward did save on one absolutely beautiful first-down grab), but Hines, Santonio, and Spaeth all had some big drops today.

Oh, and sign
Cribbs when his contract's up. The guy looked ashamed on the bench, knowing that his talent's going to waste. Maybe he'd like to play for a winner.

If either Cleveland or Baltimore ties the Steelers at the end of the season, the Steelers win the division on tiebreakers.

Scary game
I was worried going in that this would be a letdown game after a short week and all the energy spent whipping the Ravens.  I am nearly shocked that we pulled it out.  I didn't get to see it here in Atlanta.  Watched the Falcons win over the Panthers with my in-laws, but I was sweating the Steelers score those last 3 minutes.

Congrats Pittsburgh
I have to give Pittsburgh credit, for the first time since the Art(ful) dodger hosed Cleveland, Pittsburgh beat a real Cleveland team.  Steeler fans should take about as much pride as an adult beating up a six year old on all those other wins, but this one, pride would be justified.  One question though, when will the Steeler fans learn to use the bathroom instead of peeing into those towels and waving them about to dry?  No wonder they re so yellow and referred to as being "terrible".

hehe
Terrible Towels are the best gameday accessory in any sport, all other imitations just don't cut it :)

And yes, we should feel proud about this one considering the roll Cleveland was on. If you look at the Brownies schedule, it sets up pretty nicely for them to still maybe get a Wild Card.

Next week at Baltimore should tell the story. Win and they've got Houston, Arizona, NYJ, Buffalo, Cincy, and SF remaining. That's just one game against a team with a winning record. Reminds me a lot of the Jets last year.

Jacksonville still has games left against SD, Pittsburgh, and Indy.

Tennessee has games left against at Denver, San Diego, and at Indy.

And Buffalo has games left against NE, at Jacksonville, at Washington, NYG, and at Philly.

So in my mind, the Browns are very much still in the playoff hunt.

A huge win
Another testament to the two tangible things that characterize our team: Ben's emergence as one of the best QBs in the league and a great defense. Also a testament to the intangible aspect of the Steelers' character and will to win.

I didn't see this game on TV so I have to rely on play-by-play, highlights, stats and, most importantly, observations by our insightful fans and posters. It seems like we did our best to give this game away: A KO return for a TD and two other red zone gifts, a long return and a pick, that the Browns turned into TDs. We went 0-3 on red zone possessions in the first half, so that 21-9 halftime deficit was a worst-case scenario based on the play on the field.

The defense must have really cranked it up in the second half, perhaps with Anderson's inexperience also being a contributing factor. Adding up the yards from play by play, I think the Browns had one net yard of offense in the second half before starting their final drive.

Despite the adversity the Steelers created for themselves, they showed their true colors in the second half and ended up dominating the game statistically in TOP and Net Yards. It really was a top-class comeback and only a couple of QBs in the league could have pulled it off. A 30-yard QB scramble for a TD in the fourth quarter of a desperate comeback just doesn't happen very often. It should give us a lot of confidence going forward ... and a good healthy scare that might keep us out of similar holes in the future.

Onward and upward.
