Unwatchable...almost..

All - I reposted this after I typed it out in a reply. Forgive the rant...

Unwatchable.......almost
Is anyone else frustrated or better put confused as to what the coaching staff is doing? I'm not saying I'm smarter than them but how do you:

a) Come out throwing the ball in the first half in bad weather and with a QB who has a bum shoulder?

b) Continue throwing the ball in the first half even though it is generally fruitless and Parker is running well?

c) Allow a one dimensional Jacksonville offense to look so good?

d) With the game on the line allow a draw play for what 15 - 20 yards on 3rd and 9 after giving up a first down on the previous 3rd down and long with the exact same play call?

e) Given your scout films and knowledge of their strengths and coach's demeanor, how can they run the ball down your throat the entire game? It looked like the Steelers were in a loose alignment or nickel package on that last key 3rd down play.  I believe they had already thrown the INT on the last series.... Del Rio is not going to throw the game away... they are going to run it, kick it and play defense... aren't they??  Who are you playing?  It isn't the Colts, Pats, or Bengals for Crissakes... How can you be surprised they are going to run the ball until you stop it !!!!

Agghhh..... I have never come so close to walking away from a game at halftime.. never. And then to look so lame at the end to lose after a valiant comeback. The offense actually helping the defense at the end - of course the defense had to gift-wrap a TD for them but they did tie the game.

My two cents after observing this coaching staff all year:

Arians - Out.  Play calling is bizarre.  One play does not set up the other for long stretches of the game.  That C Wilson pass was beautiful but if it doesn't work how insane is Steeler Nation afterwards?! If not - serious Come to Jesus meeting after the season... not sure if that will work. Play calling is an artform not a degree or certificate program. Some people have it some don't. I'm not seeing it.

Le Beau - Tomlin needs to take control more, perhaps even now. I know they are not the same dominant unit they were 1-2 seasons ago. Forget the stats, the rankings.. did you win and play well defensively against the good teams you played? I would say in many respects - No. Tomlin is a defensive guy and he can't be happy that they were run over, especially when it counted most. I think the scheme is too cute and is over-thought at times. Two examples: PATS: Throwing it all the time, they know where your players are going to be when you call your favorite stuff. Do something different to get a pass rush - most of your DB's are not cover guys. JAGS - They are a running team, what's with all the light in the ass players on the field at the same time? If that's all you have, send 6 or 7 guys on a run blitz. Better yet, get some more tonnage up front with guys who have a hand in the dirt.

Special Teams: Start over. Sepulveda has talent and is going to be fine, had a good game yesterday. Rossum is a has-been and is not worth giving opportunities when big plays are needed. I know they don't want Holmes to get hurt but he would be a game-breaker in the return game. Coverage units are generally poor even though Reed is a good kicker.

O LINE: Re-sign Faneca now, right now. He will forgive if you give him the money - and he deserves it. Draft and trade for help here before anywhere else. The O Line is the football team - without it you can't score, without possessing the ball all defenses wear out. There is no more important unit on the team. CB would be the next spot.

Now is the time for Tomlin to assert himself and put his mark on this team. He can make changes because they need to be made in order to get into the playoffs and because the weaknesses are apparent. He has plenty of cover. No player or fan revolt will come from his tweaking of the existing systems/personalities. Make some adjustments and get it going as best you can leading into the playoffs. I could be wrong but his sideline demeanor indicates that he is along for the ride during the game. 4th down, fake punt/FG, onside kick - those are universally the HC's discretion. Those are not things which make winning teams although they may help win one game. The HC's influence and fingerprints must be upon the whole team. I only see Arians' and LeBeau's at this point scheme-wise. They are tied with the Browns - a team they themselves beat twice. They should not be struggling to beat them in the overall record for the division title. Their respective strength of schedule rating is almost identical, both playing 10 teams with over .500 records in 2006 and 5 2006 playoff teams. What I'm saying here is that the Steelers and Browns are the same, and that's not good.

Last year ...
We averaged 357.8 yards per game and 22.1 points per game.

This year, we're averaging 325.0 yards per game and 23.6 points per game.

We're averaging 33 fewer yards per game but 2.5 points per game more.

I'll take the points over the yards. Not to mention Roethlisberger's improvement.

Arians, Le Beau, ST
Arians- Have to say "keep him" for the time being.  Everything I've read talks about how comfortable BigBen is with him around, and a lot of people are crediting him with BigBen's success this year.  Is Arians to blame for us not being able to get any push on the OL in the running game at times this year? Up for debate. .

Le Beau/Tomlin- Whoever it is, we better start getting to the QB again soon.  As has been in Pittsburgh for years, the secondary just isn't good enough to shut down passing games.  We are a great defense when we lead the league in sacks (as we did halfway through the season) and a mediocre one at best when QBs have time to throw.  Heck, Cincy should've been able to move the ball on us more easily but they are screwed up in the head, dropped passes, and Palmer was uncharacteristically inaccurate.

ST- Haven't been able to read up on this topic much in recent weeks (on here, papers) but is anyone else fed up with Rossum?  We got him for one reason and I can't remember a particularly stellar punt return off of the top of my head yet this year.  Holmes is electric, but I guess can't hold onto the ball in the punt return game.  What about Reid?  Anyone else have an opinion on this?

good stuff
  • Good point on Ben's relationship with Arians. One thing to consider before calling for Arians to be fired is, do we really want Ben to have to spend the offseason learning a new offense again? Why can't we just let them grow together? Arians has to get at least some credit for Ben breaking a Steelers franchise record for passing TDs, right?
  • I think Rossum is wearing on everyone recently. He hasn't done anything to lose a game (always a good thing in PIT) but he hasn't had any explosive plays either. I'm on record as a guy who doesn't want Holmes returns kicks/punts on a regular basis but I wouldn't mind seeing Reid get a shot at it. Rossum's not getting any younger (32) so it's not like he's in any long term plans for this team.

Agree
Consistency and chemistry are as important in the coaching staff as the lines.  I live in the Washington, D.C. metro area and I can attest to the fact that turnover is de facto bad.  I think the OP maybe has some understandable buyer's remorse, but the team is first in the North and 9-5 right now.

I think you must evaluate a coaching staff over multiple years and by seeing if they have made consistent progress over that span.  On Arians, specifically, I give him credit for Ben's remarkable improvement and poor marks for the line performance - if he gets one, he gets the other.  On Tomlin, I pan his timeout management and his management of the team while traveling.  I applaud his winning record.

The OP may be 100% right, but its not proven to me, yet.

coaching stuff
I would disagree with a few of the respondents re: my rant about some of the coaching decisions/styles -
  • Roethlisberger may like Arians and why not. He emphasized a new passing attack and wanted to feature TE stuff (hasn't taken off quite like they wanted); Ben is a QB. I think a respectful relationship is vital but they won a Super Bowl with a different OC. I don't care what Ben wants, only that he helps the team perform. Mind you I don't dislike Ben, he is very talented and potentially could be a 10-12 year starter and All Pro.
  • I don't credit Arians with Ben's success necessarily. He has the talent, showed it right from the start in '04 and won the big one in '05. He was already good.
  • Consistency in coaching is generally very desirable unless the coach is poor. I think Arians is OK to return but needs to learn or be told to do certain things and not others. Some of his play calling is non-sensical. I do think tactically the 2 pt conversion was a good call in that the previous motion/handoff play to Hines failed at the goalline vs NE. The motion/handoff/pass play from Wilson to Holmes(?) was similar in design and got the required defensive reaction. I think it was high risk high reward, a little cute. The call was ballsy and may have blown up on him but credit to him for doing a good self-scout, if in fact that was involved. I hope it was. I just think overall he needs to change some tactics, I could bore you with examples but it's all just opinion especially at this point.
  • Tomlin deserves 1 or 2 more years for sure. I just don't see his imprint yet but it is early. I want to see it now, it's playoff time.

It's probably too late in the season to make a switch now, but I wouldnt expect him to be back next year, that's for sure.

ST in general
Cover teams on KO and P have been solid for several weeks. We've faced two of the best return teams in the league the last two weeks and gave up one plus return, a 30-ish KO return by NE. Our KO cover return average is now in the top half of the league (22.3, 13th), a major improvement since the Cribbs' game. Sepulveda has punted well especially in regards to hang time and placement all year but especially since the Jets game.  Gay made a great punt cover tackle Sunday and in general that unit has played well for a month.

Rossum sucks on PR but it's ironic he suffered that minor concussion Sunday on a gutsy and hard-running PR that gained about 12 yards. Our PR blocking has been about as good as our OL protection, it's just harder to notice. I don't think he has had a lot of places to run.

I know it's small consolation but it's easy to forget that the last couple years we would have traded our eye teeth for a reliable returner who could hold onto the ball. He's done that. We have lots of room for improvement. The Rams are among the worst ST cover teams in the league (ranked last in KO cover) and were burned by the Packers. Maybe there will be an opportunity for Rossum or Reid to find some holes Thursday. In a short week, with lots of tired bodies, on a fast turf, ST could have a huge impact on the game.
