Steelers vs. Rams Open Thread

Less than one hour to kickoff in St Louis where the Steelers have never faced the Rams. The Steelers last played in St Louis in 1985 when the Cardinals were there. Both teams are in a two game slide and looking to get back on the winning track. The Steelers need to get the ball rolling on some playoff momentum.

If you don't have the NFL Network or live locally check out here.

As always, GO STEELERS!!

Woodley tabbed a breakout star for 2008
Guys, in the latest issue of the Sporting News, they tabbed LaMarr Woodley as a star in the mag's "The Best of 2008: The Year in Preview" section. Woodley has a 2-page photo spread where he is standling on a slab of concrete at U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh with several hard hat workers of U.S. Steel standing in the background.

The photo is definitely badass. The photo caption for the article is "STEELY GAZE." I think one of the biggest disappointments this year besides the OL and the team's inability to win on the road is the fact that Woodley has spent too much time on the bench behind Haggans. I think he would have about 6 to 8 sacks right now if he would have at least played on 3rd down.

Let's hope Tomlin and LeBeau will begin to give him his playing time tonight. I think K. Colbert sees right now that LeBeau's defense will not be effective unless you have people who can beat blocks one on one and get to the QB. Ryan McBean isn't active tonight either, so it's going to be Nick Eason, Travis Kirschke or bust trying to stop the run from the LDE position.

I'll chime in with thoughts later after the game.

This should not be a shootout
Why can't the defense stop them? The Rams aren't supposed to be this good.

by steelinnj on Dec 20, 2007 9:06 PM EST reply actions

That's what we need,,,
A power runner.  I'm not really sold on Najeh, but does anyone think we should spend a 3rd/4th round pick on Mike Hart outta Michigan?

As a sidenote, good to see Washington stepping up and making these amazing catches.  If only he can do that consistently...

We actually stopped them!
Rams are punting

power back
Theres no way Mike Hart will be a power back in the NFL. But we need to upgrade on Najeh and at FB. One guy who might be of interest to the steelers in the draft is Matt Forte of Tulane, projected as a third rounder.

Just a Bunch Thoughts
It is 17-14.  There is a marked lack of toughness and physicality.  There is absolutely outstanding quarterback play.  I get the feeling that the coaching is poor for the lines and the special teams purely because no one is ever in the right place.  I am not a football coach - I'm maybe/probably wrong about this.  I do get the feeling that Ben is receiving great instruction as he plays with purpose (when he is not scrambling for his life), but the rest of team is not apparently not able to play with passion given their assignments - they seem to be sleepwalking through these games.  You can't be the most violent team and hit someone in the mouth if you are lost on every play.  I don't see a team - I see individuals.  Pretty bad for December.  I have continued to state that Tomlin and his staff need time to establish themselves in the league and with the team, but it is sometimes tough not to feel otherwise (my mind is not changed, I am just saying watching this team has been painful the last month and a half or so).

Damn
So WP is out for the rest of the year then.  Damnit.  Any run in the playoffs is now pretty much outta the question.

FWP only hurt his ankle aparently
Rams guys were wrong about the injury. Regardless, FWP won't return.  ESPN just said it was his ankle. This SI.com article confirms ESPN's update: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/12/20/steelers.parker.ap/index.html
