Steelers vs. Patriots
(re-read before posting, forgive the length)
Considering how the media loves the patriots stories they've been on the only game on a lot this season so I've watched most of the debacles until they got ridiculous and sometimes throughout that grabbing my head wondering how a team can be so cocky and careless with it's star players by leaving them in and driving up the score.
That being said I think the last two weeks gives us good blueprints to follow this week. Some amateur thoughts on a game plan:
Offense-
Their linebackers are old. Especially without Colvin. They're good at gap responsibility and the d-line ahead of them gets good push. Thus I really want to see some edge plays with FWP. None of this following Mahan crap cause we all know it won't work. Put it just off-tackle and preach to Willie all week to look for cut backs. If the line can get him to the second level he should have some room to create. Most of McGahee's opportunities came off tackle following Ogden with the tight end on the right forcing the Patriots to put their eighth man over there to account for the tight end. This often left Seau one on one with McGahee and he was losing that battle all night. I really wish we had Krieder as I think he could really help on these types of plays kicking out the edge.
Passing... The Eagles showed how this is done. Crossing patterns and digs. Asante Samuel guards the deeps and outside roots like nobody. Plus they seem to play outside technique almost exclusively allowing for a few feet to the inside. I think Hines should be able to make a lot of great catches over the middle. Plus let's make use of Heath. He's much taller than Harrison who will likely mark him a lot and if he can get an inside edge Ben just needs to put it in front and let Heath use his fantastic hands to bring it in. I'd also really like to see more screens. That's not just against the Patriots but in general. I don't really understand why we don't do this to alleviate blitz pressure and get FWP the ball in space with room to run with Faneca clearing the way ahead of him.
Defense-
Smart blitzing. This goes without saying as we have the Wizard, Mr. Lebeau calling the defense, but watching the past two Pats games getting some hits on Brady early and then faking and pulling 8 men back seemed really effective. And I hate to say it but let's let Welker beat us not Moss. Welker moves chains like its nobody's business but at least that takes longer and gives us more shots at turnovers and slows down the game. So let's put Ike man on Moss and have him get a jam off the line. Put safety coverage over top and man up across the rest of the line.
Hit hit hit and hit some more. Saw someone else mention this in the Ravens diary that the wide outs for the Pats started slowing their roots after the Ravens dealt some big hits. This has been one of the big complaints on Moss throughout his career (which I've seen much of being a Bears fan for the NFC). Hit him as much as you can and make him pay for every catch and watch the alligator arms shrink.
Here's to hoping that we can wipe that smirk of Brady and Belicheck's faces and clinch our division all in one week.

a few keys
- Contain Moss....consider putting Ike on him exclusively?? Noone else has the size or speed to stay with him.
- When the Pats go to an empty backfield, use our one down lineman, everyone else swarm play and overload one side of the line, should get a easy sack, force the Pats to keep a RB in to protect (Ravens did this well, we should be able to do it even better)
- Overall defense keep the game low-scoring in the first half, give us a chance to wear out their linebackers. They are wearing out not only as games go on but as this season goes on. Play our typical physical style.
- Offense, when the Pats stack eight and we have the third tight end in, motion the tight end to the right side to draw the extra defender away from where we will most likely run (almost always run to the left) and then run to the left so we get one on one vs the LB. Also when they stack the box go to the short passing game we saw against Cincy to loosen that up early on, so later we can run effectively when the game is close/we are leading. Then when the Pats adjust to the short passing game that opens up the run AND the play action for the deep ball to Holmes, who should be back. Heath Miller should have a field day against these slow LBs and R. Harrison, who is worse than Roy Williams in coverage. This guy wouldn't even be our backup safety, we need to exploit him big-time. Most their secondary can be had.
- Win turnovers, with any game is extremely important so really needs no mention but against great teams this is magnified.

great, great points
--Ike is the only guy I want to see lined up against Moss, but they need to play up tight on all three WR. Make those guys work to get off the line and disrupt their timing.
--It'll be interesting to see if NE tries to go empty backfield this week. Something would tell me their too smart to try that against this D.
--Turnovers are key, all three losses this season have come in games where the Steelers were either even or lost the turnover battle. *Just so you know, the Pats lead the league with a +17 turnover ratio.
**Bottom line* Take every chance to be physical with this team.

yea
I liked a diary earlier in the week about getting the short yardage runs to keep our offense on the field in the 4th quarter. Big test next week for us to see if we can play some ball control when necessary.

Keys to the game
Just starting the smack talk before this weekends big game. Alot of people are giving you grief because of the cheating thing, calls going your way, etc. I'm not here to do any of that. You have a great team and it's gonna be harder then hell to beat you. But would love to get some actual predictions and keys to the game from the Patriot nation. As opposed to the standard we are gonna kick your ass and you suck crap that normally dominates the boards.
I'll start it out and lets see where we go...
Keys to a Steeler Win
- RUN,RUN,RUN. And I mean positive yards. Steelers must be able to impose their will on the Patriot D-Line. This will force the safeties up closer to the line and open up the middle of the field for Miller and Ward. Long sustained drives that eat clock and score 7 are huge. Field goals in the red zone won't cut it. You let NE hang around they will find a way to win. Ask the Ravens and Philly.
- No Turnovers. No Ben forcing the ball where he shouldn't, No Willie Parker fumbles. Must win the turnover battle. Any drive that ends in a kick isn't all bad as the saying goes.
- Pressure Brady at all times. Don't have to sack him but must force him to hurry the throw or scramble. Brady has time and he will disect you.
- Special Teams will be big. Steelers have had their share of problems on coverages. Steelers will be in much better shape if New England is forced to drive the long field.
- Eliminate unforced errors. False starts, offsides, and other stupid penalties will kill you in a game like this. There is always one of those a game that you look back on and go "only if we didn't give them that first down on that stupid penalty". Steelers cannot give Patriots second chances.
- Steelers offensive line. It has been just that in several games this year, offensive. They MUST open holes for the run game and protect Ben. Our gaurds have looked like matadors at times this year. If Ben wasn't as nimble and strong as he is we would have given up twice the amount of sacks that statistics show us giving up.
- Big Plays. The Steelers need someone to step up and make a BIG play. Offense or Defense it doesn't matter. Make that catch no one thought you could, get that one handed tip away when it looked like you were beat, MAKE something happen. And the Steelers need to NOT GIVE UP the big play.
- Play 60 minutes and play to win. Don't play not to lose if you get a lead. Go for the heart because as I said before. If it stays close the Pats will find a way to sneak it out, the good teams always do.
Gotta throw out my prediction. I think its going to be a close game but I gotta go with my Steelers. 34-28
I think the odds finally catch up with you guys this week. It should be great. I'd wish you luck but at 12-0 that seems overkill. Here's to a good game!!!!

Good analysis, but have to disagree a bit...
- Run, Run, Run would be great if we could actually do it successfully. I don't think we can this year. We don't have the 2004 O-line with a pile mover like Duce Staley to sustain drives - the last time we beat an undefeated Pats team. Yes, the Pats have looked bad on run defense recently but if there's one thing Belichick can do, it is apply a weekly band-aid on the most porous part of his defense. I'm hoping Arians calls relatively high percentage short and intermediate pass plays at least 50% of the time on first down.
- Obviously we don't want INTs or fumbles but for this game I don't like the conventional wisdom about drives that end in kicks being good drives. If we have 4th and 3 at the NE45 we need to go for it and not punt. Limiting the number of NE's possessions will be key to this game. One way to do that is to sustain our own drives by being selectively aggressive with 4th down calls.
- While big plays would be nice, I don't think we need big plays to win this game. After watching Philly and Baltimore take it to the Pats the last two weeks we need fundamentally sound physicality on defense, efficient execution on the offense and selective aggression all around. We're not as much of an underdog as Vegas thinks we are.

I posted this in another diary
All in all, we'll probably be smacked around by 40. Knowing that we have a chance hurts us.
by Big7BenMVP on Dec 4, 2007 7:50 PM EST 0 recs
Pretty accurate
Outside routes will be covered well by SS Rodney Harrison who's very physical. ;-) Inside, the older LBs Bruschi and Seau are big and good tacklers, but may have trouble covering good passes.

good points
Question for you Pats fan: How is Harrison in coverage and is he the guy who normally covers tight ends or do they leave that up to LBs?

You're right
The LBs should pick up those routes. OLBs Vrabel and Thomas (in for the injured Colvin) are good post catch tacklers, but Harrison is given a great deal of latitude on the field because he reads routes very well and will often commit to defending or assisting in the defense of a short pass.

Brady vs Rothliesburger
The Patriots will prevail because they have the guy that knows how to win, simple as that.
