Around SBN: Which Players Will Join The 3,000-Hit Club?

Big Ben just passed 1,500 attempts in Balt Game...

so now, he qualifies for official league records.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/10/01/chff/index.html

It's worth a read, they pretty much compare Ben to the old school players, and note how his playing style is much like the great passers of yesteryear.

They also note that his stats have been going down every year since his initial years.

As he stands now, his career stats look like this:

961 of 1,519 (63.3 percent), 12,311 yards, 8.10 YPA, 88 TDs, 56 INTs, and a 92.52 passer rating

Which is good for #5 in all time passer rating. None too shabby!

HOFer

So he says that four more years like Ben’s first four, and he’s a sure first ballot HOFer! Sweet! Perhaps that means including a second SB ring. Yeah, that should get him in first ballot.

BTW, I haven’t seen you post before, VT. Of course, I’ve been having a hard time keeping up with the posting the last couple of week (slammed at work, then a week vacation where I didn’t check the web at all). Welcome to the site. Is that for Va Tech or Vermont?

Hi, I haven't posted in a while..

I forgot my password, username, etc. I just read this site nearly everyday, but I certainly don’t have much meaningful stuff to contribute. I’ll try to post more often and etc., but this site is just fun to read, due to all the unique perspectives that it has brought, a good example being Maryrose’s stuff. Always looking forward to more!

Ben

I think he has a great chance at the HOF, if he doesnt get killed first.

Sorry!

Like everybody else, I want Ben to be in the HOF. But Why are all of you guys on your knees already when he is still trying to get of the the ball in the endzone on a regular basis. PLEASE! Get of the floor and wipe you mouths . And please don’t start cryin, Ben has made just as many errors on offense as antone else. And he would admit it. So go acting like that is HOF style of play. Some of you fans just go way too far some times. Get a grip. I’m a Steeler fan too. But let the season run its course.

What's you're problem?!

All I said was that the article (not me) said that if Ben had four more years like his first four, he’d be a first ballot HOFer. THE ARTICLE said that! Are you denying that? You don’t think if he wins another SB and has similar production this year and the next three to his first four that he would be a HOFer?

Nobody said that his play so far this year has been up to par. Nobody said, “Oh, yeah! He’ll definitely keep up his stellar play for the next 4 years and win another SB!” So, I don’t even understand the basis for your comment.

actually, I was surprised his stats were 'down'...

I don’t really follow or actually understand a lot of those stats, but my butt-meter was saying Ben was having consecutive better years, with the one exception being that injury plagued year with the super bowl hangover and helmet-less bike riding. He seemed to learn from that as well.

Other than that, I’ve seen him do nothing but improve, year after year. Now if we could just get a few bionic, super warrior type O linemen to supplement the few that we have, I think his stats would explode, ala Manning when his line was great.

good read, thanks for the post

what do you guys think about their claims of Ben’s declining numbers? I think its really hard to tell. Clearly Ben’s most productive year as a QB was last year. And I think its just as clear that the 2006 campaign was an outlier based on the motorcycle accident, appendectomy and the concussions. Though its hard to argue with their numbers, its equally as hard to say Ben isn’t a much better QB now then he was a few years ago. I think the supporting cast has changed alot but the biggest thing in my mind is that the Steelers can’t use the play action pass anywhere near as effectively as they used to.

I’m interested in what other people think…

heh, I said a smuch in a repsonse above.

I just feel like if we had just TWO more O line guys that could hold up the washington monument if it were to tip over would be Ben’s meal ticket.

declining numbers

Well, they’re mainly pointing to Y/A and passer rating declining, and I think that has to do with the fact that he had a fantastic running game with FWP, Bus and Duce. Without the Bus, especially, our short yardage, grind out yards with a lead in the second half, game is not what it used to be. So, Ben is throwing for more attempts, and having to carry the team more. The more passes he has, the greater the opportunity for incompletions and shorter gains.

...Uhhhh....Ben had the best statistical season of his career...

..last season. By quite a large margin. Where did these bozos come up with their “declining” numbers?

by robert ethan on Oct 2, 2008 5:45 PM EDT reply actions

not in QB rating

unless you count the first 4 games of the season over all of last season. Point taken on the YPA numbers, but that has an obvious correlation to him passing more starting in 2006.
