How good are the Ravens?
Last week I asked if we can officially dismiss the Browns as a threat in the AFC north. Steeler-nation, or at least the part that bothered to answer, seemed to have little or no doubt that we could. Tough competition or not, it seems that ALL the fans who responded thought that the Browns were overrated going in to the season and that their 1-3 start is a good reflection of their actual talent level and lack of team cohesion.
I am a little more skeptical that the Browns are that bad. I still think that they have played a VERY tough schedule to start and that their record is at least partially a reflection of that. Having said that, there is no denying that the team has been less than inspiring, and that they appear to be facing a crisis of leadership that might only get worse after they play the undefeated Giants.
I wanted to turn our attention to the other team in our conference: the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens came into the season with much lower national expectations than the Browns. Their offense has been in the process of rebuilding for several years and though their defense remained potent, not much was expected of them. It seems, at least at the outset, that Ravens are exceeding expectations.
Today, I was stunned to see that Football outsider DVOA rankings had the Ravens ranked at #2 this season. I can’t say I totally understand how DVOA works, but the basic gist, is it explores how well teams play while factoring in the level of competition. The system tilts heavily towards statistics and away from looking at wins and losses. But according to these ratings (an the accompanying article) the Ravens outplayed both the Steelers and the Titans.
Now I find that a bit hard to swallow having watched our game with the Ravens. But I do think that it’s important to remember that the Ravens lost to the Steelers at Heinz Field and that it was a VERY close game. Their loss against the Titans was VERY, VERY close and the phantom roughing call on Suggs may have cost the Ravens a win.
Overall I am quite impressed by the Ravens this year. There defense seems ferocious and disciplined (ask our number one draft pick). Their offense is still a big question mark, but I think there is no denying that Flacco has been a vast improvement at QB.
So what do you think, Nation? Are the Ravens back in a big way? They have what will prove to be a very interesting game at Indy this week. After that they have a very soft middle of the season, with games against Miami, Oakland, Cleveland and Houston, before finishing against much tougher competition. I am curious to hear predictions for their overall record as well.

BrownRavens
are our major competition in the AFC North, Their defense is playoff caliber. Flacco is young and will get rattled in a big game but has shown potential as a big game QB. They had us on the ropes Monday night but let us off the ground. It will be a rough tough return match at Baltimore.

As I understand VOA’s only adjust according to opponent rankings halfway through the season. That being said, the ravens aren’t bad, and we’ll have to wait to see how good that is.

Ravens offense
I just dont know if the ravens have enough offense to pull out these tough games. The defense will always keep them in these close games and ultimately it will take Flacco playing well in order for them to win.

Ravens
Really its been the same story for the last decade with them…great defense, suspect offense.
I’m just glad they haven’t assembled a good offense b/c they would be unbelievable…missing on Boller really hurt them.
We’ll see what happens with Flacco…hopefully for us, he’ll be like Boller…show some promise but never really be big time, like Ben.

ravens
Big game for them this week. If they can win on the road at indy, that’d be damn impressive. 2-3 puts them 2.5 back of us, which I wouldn’t mind. I dont think theyre playoff caliber this year, maybe in two more years.

After the first Quarter
Lots of evidence regarding the shortcomings of the Ravens. Down 17-0 and looking like they don’t have a prayer.

+1
Yeah… They’re getting abused right now. The playoff pictures is already looking like it’s gonna be tough for any team that is under 500 right now.
I think the Ravens will be one hell of a hard game in Baltimore. I’d say it’s one of the toughest we have left on our schedule.

Yah,
I think Indy just answered this question. So much for the league’s #1 defense.

Sorry Bmore
but you got your arses handed to you today by Indy. So much for a defense laid down and rolled over for a shakey P. Manning. I still think our defense is smarter and faster

Not a chance, from a fan in B-More
Let me give you a little history of the ravens, from someone who lives in B-more and hears about them everyday. First of the ravens are a FRAUD. If you follow their history they have had had 2 winning teams in the last 6 years. They are a team that has lived on their reputation since they won the Bowl. Yes, I will agree that about 6 years ago they were a top 5 team in the NFL, but we all know that their defense Has been very good, but I view them as the classic neighorhood bully, if you let them hit you in the mouth without hitting back, they will run over you every time. But when a team smacks them back and gets just as physical they fold. has everyone forgot that this team lost 9 games in a row last year? They currently stand at 7 loses in a row on the road, is this the sign of a Good team? They won 2 games against wounded teams, and they thought they were ready to print playoff tickets. All division games are tough normally, rarely do you have a blow -out. The last time I checked a football game is 60 minutes, not 50. Check them out, their MO, is very simple, they typically beat the teams that are below and they typically beat the teams they are equal to, but whenever they play a team that is better, they lose, and complain and blame the lost on refs, weather, bad breaks etc. To ask your question, they will be lucky to win 5 games, our toughest team will be the Browns. Next time I will talk about theirt next great QB. Flacco.
