WHERE THE STEELERS STAND-BYE WEEK EDITION

I asked RickVa to share his thoughts as we come out of the BYE week. A very good read. Many thanks to RickVa for the contribution. For those new to the site, you can get a glimpse into RickVa's old playing days in this great article. Between this and maryrose's latest history lesson, we've got plenty of good stuff to help us inch closer to game day once more. Cheers. -Blitz-

As we pause and take a breath before tackling the meat of the schedule here’s one person’s opinion as to where we are and where we’re headed in the 2008 season.

Six months ago I think that if we were offered a record of 4-1 at the bye we’d take it and consider ourselves fortunate. Of course we would have assumed that the loss would have come at the hands of the Jags, and no one would have the heart to describe our injury situation for fear that they might find our lunch on their shoes. And then there was the abysmal performance of the offense weeks 2 thru 4. So, should we be excited in anticipation of another trip to the playoffs, or are we being set up for monumental disappointment? If I knew for certain I’d be writing this somewhere else and making a great deal of money to do so. Let me try and make the case that the glass is a little more than half full for the Steelers and why.

Where We Are

Coaching Staff. I’m in the tank for Tomlin, as are a number of other regulars at BTSC, but it is fair to say that in only his second year, the jury must still be out on the man who is the youngest coach in the NFL now that the senile bastard over in Oakland has fired Coach Kiffin. What I see is a man who has to experience some growth in areas such as game management, one or two questionable personnel decisions (Mahan) and holding his assistants accountable. But I also see someone who can and does adapt, the best example of which is how he has paced the team this season as opposed to last. You get the feeling with this group that it’ll be better in November than it was in September. He is someone who is capable of some very good personnel decisions (Moore). He has seen to it that perceived weaknesses be addressed sufficiently to allow the team to be competitive (O-Line, D-Line, Special Teams). He has built a buffer against injury and sub par performance by creating a very deep team where the expectations are high for everyone. He has preached character off the field. And when was the last time you heard of a member of this team involved in a domestic dispute, a fight, a traffic violation or any other distraction? All the crimes this team has committed have been on the field where they belong. (Most violent team indeed!) And this young man has yet to spend a minute anywhere but first place in his division during his tenure. If he were coaching anywhere but Pittsburgh they’d be calling him a genius.

Star-divide

A word about two other coaches. First, will someone give some love to D-Line coach John Mitchell? We went into this season terrified that we were too thin on the D-Line, that we would be okay if none of the starters got hurt. So what happens? Two starters get hurt. So, we go to Jacksonville with Taylor and Jones-Drew and we…stop them with those supposed inferior backups. Give credit where credit is due. On the other hand there is Arians. I said this before on another thread, I think he’s put together a decent offense, a good strategist, but he’s weak on tactics. He adapts slowly, if at all. You saw it against Philly and through the first half against the Ravens. I found myself constantly yelling “Why did you rnn that play?” These are a few of the questions that need to be answered that are troubling: Why did Ben have to throw a tantrum for them to finally allow him to run the no huddle? It worked to perfection last year, it’s great for putting an aggressive defense on its heels. Why did it take every other healthy running back on the team to go down before Mewelde Moore got any touches? If that hadn’t happened we would presumably still be waiting to see what he could do or pronouncing him another poor Tomlin personnel move. And what about Gary Russell? Kinda makes you wonder what might really happen if you threw Limas Sweed into a game. Or Dennis Dixon. We may never know unless Hines and Ben get run over by the same truck. Now, if the plan is to go vanilla early and add complexity as the season goes on, then I will be the first to apologize. Otherwise someone needs to break it to BA that he may not be the smartest guy in the room and needs to anticipate adapting mid game.

Offense. We have to accept the fact that Ben is stubborn (maybe a bit knuckleheaded as well). When things go right he touches greatness. When things go bad he (and we) gets his ass kicked, fingers are pointed at the O-line and the coaches. Bottom line; no one is complaining that he is getting overpaid and that is a pretty good complement. We learned in the Jacksonville game that Moore and Russell are at least as good as many of us hoped they could be during the off season. I certainly am disappointed that I will have to wait at least another year to see what Mendenhall is capable of doing, but I think we are still in pretty good shape, actually very good shape at running back. Heath, Hines, Nate all seem to be doing just fine. Matt Spaeth is a mild disappointment (bad hands) so far. Who knows about Dallas Baker. The receiving corps is fine.

Expanding on a suggestion by Datruth, did Max Starks get caught with someone’s wife? I like Willie Colon but I think Starks is better. I am delighted that Trai Essex has stepped up, but Starks is better. The FO seems to like him too. Those guys throw nickels around like manhole covers and they gave Max a lot of money. Internal politics, guess we'll never know. Otherwise, though they won’t be erecting any statues to the O-line they aren’t close to the disaster that many had predicted. Props to Hartwig and Stapleton so far. They will be good enough to take this team as far as it needs to go.

Defense. The defense has been nothing short of fantastic. And they are playing it vanilla right now. Woodley, Harrison and Troy are playing at Pro Bowl levels. We should all apologize to Travis and Eason. Hoke should be awarded a medal. Casey is back, Brett is back. Bmac has arrived. This defense is ready for a championship run. The best thing is that the national media is pronouncing Timmons a "failure". Apparently they didn't see his pass rushing against the Eagles. Are they going to be surprised.

Special Teams. They’ve stopped the bleeding! Reed has become one of the better clutch kickers in the league. It would be nice if we could have a great returner. But they are not hurting us and that is progress.

Where Are We Going

Let’s look at this as simply as we can. We have won as many games so far as the rest of the teams in the AFC North combined. We have four remaining division games starting this week. Win three of those and we go to the playoffs. All the rest is ego and entertainment. However, keep in mind that if the playoffs began today we would get a first round bye. That week of rest and home field is worth fighting for. Ah, but what about the schedule from Hell? It was the schedule from Hell in April. The Bengals haven’t won a game. Did you see the Giants last night in Cleveland? The Skins lost to the Rams. The Colts haven’t been themselves. The Chargers will come to Pittsburgh having been on the road for about a month. Matt Cassell? Dallas? The Bengals and the Browns again at home. How are the Titans going to score?  Yes, we could lose any one of those games. But would it mean that we were playing over our heads if we won them all? How about 7-4 the rest of the way (with losses to the Skins, who are really pointing to our Monday night matchup, the Colts, the Titans and Ravens)? Even 8-3? Of course, if our injury situation continues at the same rate all bets are off. But suppose the worst is over in that regard. If we stay healthy and the OC gets his head out of his ass I like our chances.

Bonus Issue. One reason it may be difficult to believe that Pittsburgh is so well positioned is that if you pay attention to the national press, the networks, etc. we don’t get nearly as much attention as Dallas, San Diego, even Baltimore. Why? Stay with me for a minute, this may seem a little strange at first. The Pittsburgh Steelers are bad for business. How is that possible? See, you probably think that the NFL and the networks are in the football business. They’re not. They are in the entertainment business. The Steelers are what the NFL used to be at its best, but we simply don’t do entertainment well. My friend Rick ‘Doc’ Walker is a former SB champion Washington Redskin and a radio talk show host. He (admiringly) refers to Steeler football as “Neanderthal” football, staying true to the brutal basic truths of the game. We just played three riveting (for us) games on a national stage that were long on brutality, personal courage, defense and subtle intrigue. The scores barely made it into or beyond the teens. The casual fan that the league and the networks cater to would prefer a 51-49 score. They prefer the soap opera of TO, the minstrel show that is Chad Johnson, the distraction of Tony and Jessica, all Brett all the time (and Tom too), Cinderella stories; last year the Browns, this year the Titans or maybe the Falcons or maybe the Cards, all augmented by scantily clad women with fake boobs, fantasy leagues that amp interest in games most would normally not care about and adorable mascots. By contrast the Steelers don’t have any casual fans. We were the first team to do cheerleaders then decided that we didn’t need them. Steely McBeam knows not to show his face for fear of ending up face down in the river. TO and Jessica would be run out of town. Steeler Nation would still watch the game if they raised Ray Scott from the dead and broadcast the games in black and white. They put the lie to fan loyalty in other cities as they continually show up and take over the other team's stadiums. The team is lead by players such as Hines Ward, a receiver who gets fined for jacking up DBs (ever wonder if Hines’ mom is really from NORTH Korea?). Their coach is a (presumably) angry young black man who says things like “The most violent team wins” (really bad for business, but great for football).  He was preceded by a guy who when he got excited became something called The Chin and commenced to spit on people.Think about this; our fans and our team are more passionate, innovative (terrible towel) more consistent. But people would prefer the fans of Green Bay and their cheeseheads because they're more adorable. They, the league and the network, will deal with us if they have to. But they don’t want to.

What do you think?

Nice 1!!

I don’t need the network media to tell me about the Steelers!! I got BTSC!!! Plus, my personal space is Steelers country, believe that!!

As much as they wanna avoid the Steelers, we’ll be sitting rugged at the #2 spot in their power rankings!!

GO Steelers!!

We had better be sitting at number 2, maybe even #1

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

Great!

Thanks Rick! Very interesting and thought provoking read. I made all the way through telling you how well written. My thoughts;
With you on Tomlin and the coaches. Like MT but feel he has a ways to go. Not a BA fan…yet. Hoping he can find his way through a playoff run to glory. LeBeau and disciples are the best. LeBeau is HOF.

Think the rest of the schedule will still be tough. All the teams with big front 7 will test our metal. Beware everyone. Even the Bungles. Cleveland looked damn good last night. NYG aren’t that bad. Baltimore will be a blood bath. Romo will be back. SD will be surging. Keep the focus Steelers! One W at a time.

Regarding the national media and the Steelers; I don’t know what it is. Even in the 70’s I felt the national media didn’t embrace the Steelers. I still remember reports of threats made to Cosell when the Steelers didn’t show up on MNF Halftime Highlights weeks in a row or Dandy Don happily singing “Good night the party’s over” to the Steelers going down in defeat.
Maybe there is some truth to what you say. Also, maybe we are a little insecure as Steelers fans and the sons of coal miners, steel workers and other blue collar laborers when compared to NY, LA and other silver spoons.

When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen

Thanks Fifty

just wanted to let you know that I agree about taking it one at a time. Being able to win is one thing. Actually winning is something else.

Nice stuff

One thing I thought I’d point out is how important getting a bye week or even the #1 seed will be. Our OL is struggling on the road this year: we commit penalties on the snap count, DE’s and blitzers are keying off our silent counts, it’s harder to run no huddle when it’s loud. The more games we have at home in the playoffs, the better chance our OL will have of holding together. Every game is important, even if we’re a couple games on top of our division.

I said this in the other thread, but I’m not encouraged by how the Browns beat the Giants. The Browns OL picked up blitzes and got the ball away quickly, and forced the Giants to play coverage, which they’re AWFUL at. We can’t beat them the way the Browns did, and I’m still more worried about that game than the others (@Balt is a possible exception).

Really Liked...

The explanation for why the national guys don’t give us the love we deserve. This was exactly what I was telling my girlfriend the other night when explaining to her why the national sports media doesn’t like us. Great minds think alike, I guess. Go Steelers.

by Hines Ward on Oct 14, 2008 4:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Great point

about the national media and the casual fan they are trying to sell their product to. Personally if I see a 51-48 ball game, I am disgusted by the lack of defense, and that’s Pro or college. Maybe that is just a mid west thing.

It is funny. The greatest feet in baseball is a perfect game then a no hitter. That has to hard to sell by the press to the casual fan, but the press works hard at it. You look at football the most watch sport in the US, and our press reports on TO, Chad, Farve, and who is dating Romo.

by SteelBuckeye on Oct 14, 2008 6:26 PM EDT   0 recs

maybe...

baseball in general has a higher proportion of fans who love the science of the game vs. football, where hard hits, high scores and pretty cheerleaders are all a lot of people want to see? (not that I’m knocking hard hits!)

I think baseball does take more selling in general, though – I love the atmosphere of a baseball game at the stadium, but I’m not really one to tune in for one on TV. Football is much more of a ‘made for TV’ sport to begin with, even before all the offense-favoring pansy rule changes came in. (and after-the-fact fines on non-flagged plays – say what??!?)

by acrollet on Oct 14, 2008 9:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Agree on the high-score thing...

Example the Cowpokes vs. Eagles game or this weekend’s OSU vs Texas… offensive duels can be fun to watch, but not nearly so satisfying as seeing your defense choke the other team’s offense off at the throat.

Great post from Rick there! I agree wholeheartedly on the anti real-football bias in the “popular” media.

by SCSteeler on Oct 16, 2008 3:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I hear you but

who cares! I think at this point most Steeler fans know this league is about entertainment and Real football is not what they want, Those other teams have all the glitz and glamour but mostly drama. But I have’nt noticed ant of those type of teams winning superbowls. I like the way the Steekers kinda of play it low key playing a kick ass style just waiting for someone to talk s——.

Good points.

Mexico media

I think its a shame for the NFL and the general media that you prefer the 85 showman or the cry baby TO, than talk football. but that is what bring th money. In Mexico the Steelers fan base is great only smaller than the Cboys base, but I guess more active, so far here in Mexico I can wactch every Steelers game. they will televise the Steelers vs. Bungles. Next the MNF. And the media here like a lot the smashmouth Steelers football.

Question. Anyone knows why Wardwas fined? next thing you know the NFL will be playing flag football(tochito banderola). This is ridiculous

by simbiom on Oct 15, 2008 12:22 PM EDT   0 recs

Hines is under the impression that it’s for a play where he walked over Corey Ivy while he was still on the ground. But the league hasn’t specifically told Hines which play earned the fine, so one has to wonder.

I agree pretty much...

but we DO have a lot of prime time Sunday and MNF games. I think the media appreciates the Steelers more than some think…

by rissaldar on Oct 15, 2008 2:37 PM EDT   0 recs

The schedule

does indeed to appear, at this point anyway, not to be as bad as originally thought. I would venture that we should be in all of our remaining games at the very least. I don’t see us getting blown out by virtue of our D keeping it close, and an O that can still put up points against lesser defenses. We should end up 10-6 at the worst, and, dare I say, 15-1 at the best. Unlikely? Admittedly. Possible? History supports the possibility. We want to win them all, right?

"Steeler Nation= We are better than you!"

We might still be able to pull off 16-0.

Great article

I really enjoyed reading that. I think you have a good point about the Steelers not being hyped because their style doesn’t lend itself to the casual fan. I would also say that because Steelers fans are so loyal, the NFL knows that they don’t have to do anything special to appeal to us. They sort of take Steelers fans for granted. It’s like Steelers fans are the base football fan. They know we’re not going anywhere else.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Oct 15, 2008 5:37 PM EDT   0 recs

Agree 100% Wolfpack

Why cater to us?

by RickVa on Oct 15, 2008 6:00 PM EDT   0 recs

There are two phases of media

One is the media who cover the games themselves. They love us and have since the Immaculate Reception. We’ve played three night games already with two more in the works. They move most of the rest of our games to 4:15. We’re in the Eastern time zone and play a grand total of 2 of our first 13 games at 1:00 p.m. That’s remarkable. And don’t be surprised if those last three don’t get moved. The networks love to cover Ben, the Bus, Hines, a guy like Troy. I think Mike Tirico may have already adotpted James Harrison. Madden and Collinsworth love to hate us because of past history. With our smashmouth style and rugged personality, the Steelers personify football. Networks also love to show all the Terrible Towel wavers in enemy stadiums and talk about Steeler Nation. It’s been this way for a long time.

Once the game ends, phase two of the media kicks in and as Rick and others have mentioned, that group does not like us. The Rooneys aren’t seeking attention like Jerry Jones, the Dan and that idiot in Oakland. Our players, as Rick and others have correctly pointed out, aren’t Pac Man, Plex, TO, Ocho, the Raven defenders, Moss or even Braylon Edwards noisemakers. And our coach is as close to the vest as possible, doing a superb job of saying all the right things. Those people don’t like us because we don’t add to the soap opera. Once the game ends, they key on big markets and big mouths since that is all they have to generate hype.

The bottom line is that we get the best of both worlds. We get as much national coverage as anybody and have for 35 years. Yet when the game ends, we don’t want the stupid coverage. We don’t need National Enquirer. Our market and team personality protect us. That’s good for us to stay focused and grounded. I hope we stay under the radar all year until they finally say, “Hey, this team just won the Super Bowl!”

by maryrose on Oct 15, 2008 7:20 PM EDT   0 recs

+1

Well said Rose. We certainly get attention in scheduling and marketing of the NFL, “What’s with the lamp” anyone? But for the coverage media, there’s not much ‘meat’ to Pittsburgh. You’ve got players acting like a team and coaches taking responsibility where needed. And unless you’re best damn sports blog ever, what would you talk about?

by Chicago Steeler on Oct 15, 2008 8:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Best commercial this season!

Since I watch all my Steelers games over at a friends house (Cowboys fans), I like to sing along. Great times.

Thanks

That’s a brilliant exposition of the situation. We have a ton of nationally televised games because the ratings tend to go up when we’re on. Most of what happens on ESPN is ill-informed soap opera garbage. That’s why analysts kept picking the Dodgers to beat the Phillies, even though they were clearly overmatched. That’s why people complained with no end when we made it to the Super Bowl with the Seahawks. Let them keep talking about being (if I hear this expression one more time, I’m killing my television) and the Steelers will keep being the Steelers.

U R A GENIUS MARYROSE!!!

I think that last post sums it up pretty good. I don’t mind not being talked about 24/7 like all these other jerks. I like flying under the radar until…….BAM! QB milkshake brought to you by Deebo and Da Wood! Personally, the snub of the ‘Enquirer’ media sits just fine with me, look at the predicament that Dallas is in now that PACMAN reared his ugly head again. Thanks but no thanks!

Agreed

Yeah, I think you’re right on that. The Steelers games are marketed widely this season, because they know a lot of fans will tune. But, the pundits don’t like to talk about the Steelers because the games aren’t full of flash and dazzle. But, I am about sick of hearing Steve Young bitch and moan after every Steelers MNF game. Last year, he was complaining about field, this year it’s the “horrible offense” being played in the Ravens-Steelers game. Three years ago, he was complaining about the officiating in the SB. I always like Young at SF, but I’m really getting tired of it. The Steelers win a hard fought game, and I want to hear some legitimate postgame analysis. All he brings is this whining about how it wasn’t pretty. Anyway, enough ranting from me. :)

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Oct 16, 2008 11:26 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Not whining....

It’s football, it’s not supposed to be pretty. The “beautiful game” is soccer supposedly.

Anyway…I agree with you guys that the spotlight is better off our team – I don’t want to be a part of that crap, but every now and then it would be nice to see a spot about our team just to see where these bozos think we’re at. Scratch that though, if they did that we’d prob complain about the attention even more than without it.

by SCSteeler on Oct 16, 2008 3:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice nuance

I like your take on this Rose. Not getting covered much doesn’t bother me so much. I just get tired of the soap opera. Don’t need it to get amped up for the game.
