Fine Protest by Dan Rooney
From the Post-Gazette notebook:
This is why players love playing for the Rooneys. Love that Rooney is making a fight against the moves by the NFL to turn this into a flag football league.Steelers chairman Dan Rooney sent a letter to the NFL to protest the $5,000 fine leveled against wide receiver Hines Ward for "unnecessary roughness" against the Baltimore Ravens Sept. 29.
The NFL did not stipulate in the letter to Ward a specific play for which he was fined. Ward was not penalized in the game.
Rooney said he wrote to the league to say that Ward "plays the game the way it's supposed to be played."
Ward thought he was fined for stepping over cornerback Cory Ivy after one play.
"At least he stepped over him," Rooney said, "and not on him."

Must have missed it
I didn’t even know that he was fined. But, this sounds pretty ridiculous. If the league is fining him, then they should at least let him know for which play. What happened, did the big, bad Ravens defenders whine to the league?

for once
The Ravens players are saying that they don’t support it. The suspected play is when Hines stepped over the newly-laid out Corey Ivy, Ivy has said he doesn’t think Hines should be fined.

Sorry, then, Ravens players. :)

Goodell
Roger Goodell loves giving out the fines and most of them are outrageous. Early last year I read that he was like a dictator trying to get a firm grip on his country (NFL) and its starting to look that way

it appears only Hines' is getting looked at but..
several other Steeler’s players got fined for the past two games. Clark, Harrison, and Washington are among Ward.
Harrison for the criticizing of the refs.
Clark for that late hit on a defenseless receiver (even though he lead with his shoulder and not helmet, despite what Madden says)
Washington for taunting…..I mean seriously, Taunting? cmon, 15 yards is enough of a penalty you don’t need to go and fine the guy. Goodell is going a little too far there.

agreed on all accounts
I feel like Goodell is cracking down on just about everything but what matters. He is ridiculously harsh on players and yet when Bill “i’m nothing without Tom” Belichick blatantly breaks a rule that gives him a competitive advantage he doesn’t even receive a suspension.
I’m not a goodell fan at all. All the posturing and personal meeting with league trouble spots does nothing for me. Sure suspend Pacman, I’m fine with it, but stop putting yourself in the situation by meeting with him and talking about being disappointed and all that.
Harrison made the mistake of accusing the refs of betting on the game. he’s gonna get hit for that. But Clark’s hit was flagged appropriately, it did not require a fine. He didn’t hit helmet to helmet or anything. Likewise for Nate. Unless he said something amazingly inappropriate in that moment we don’t know about I don’t like it.

If they are going to fine players for taunting
Then Bart Scott would have to pay the Ravens to play football….. this is ridiculous.
Did they fine the Jags DB for taunting Nate when he was on the ground?

You gotta be kidding!
I was ticked about the play calling in that game already….now fines! What the hell is going on?
Can the fans fine the refs?
Ooops…I’ve just received a fine from the head office…shit!

Goodell will prohibit tackles for 2009 season
This is the next step for goodell. Is ridiculous the fines that are all over the NFL. And the way the officials are evaluating the plays. this game its played by tackling your opponent. not by hugging him. They are just killing the best thing of football. that a shame.

Another thing of interest here
Ok, I am really questioning the fining of Nate. Apparently Goodell has been fining taunts fairly consistently but I find it completely ridiculous that you can fine a man 7,000+ for a simple taunt yet allow Pacman to stay in the NFL. Does Jerry Jones do favors for him or something?

"It loses so much of its essence, and it really becomes like a pansy game,"
Bwa ha ha. Troy brings it.

wow...
The silent warrior speaks! And wisdom flows forth.
I love his comparison that the old players that are beloved by all lovers of the game wouldn’t even have been able to play. Goodell is definitely taking it too far.

Cracked it!
…Kwoog and Goodell…has anyone seen them at the same place at the same time?
Ah hah!!!
Seriously though, Troy is 100% right about the way the game is heading in terms of the officiating and rule changes. I love football, but I hate the way the rules are going. The fines are ridiculous… The penalties on the field are the punishment for stuff like this.
Does anyone have the info on fines leveled against our opponents in those same games (Jacks/B-mor) ?

good question
I did a little search on google news, and searching for fine and jacksonville jaguars or baltimore ravens only pulls up stories about the fines leveed on our players – same thing when you search for the steelers and fine. So, I’m not saying their guys didn’t get fined, but it’s sure not in the news if they did…
