Expect Ward To Get Hit

I'm not talking about on the field -- I'm talking about in the League office.

Note that I'm in complete agreement with Polamalu on hitting in the NFL, and that the League runs the risk of wimping out.

But after last week's fines -- unwarranted as they were -- Ward could very well be suspended for breaking Keith Rivers' jaw. We know that Ward wasn't out to intentionally injure someone, but the League will argue that the amount of roughness was not necessary -- that Ward could have simply shoved Rivers out of the way.

No that was legit,

If the NFL has any sense whatsoever they’ll let that stand, it was a perfectly clean hit, if not then there should be a strike (god forbid) between the league and all the teams, and the team’s fans.

Rooney

I think the league will be a little careful… Dan rooney gets a lot of respect around the league and him making the statement that ward just plays how it’s meant to be played may give him some latitude. But if “Player Safety” is priority one then they may do it. Even though it was legit and also pretty damn awesome.

I dunno

Ending a first round draft pick’s rookie season isn’t really that cool. The hit was playside and looked pretty clean, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he at least got fined. Welcome to the NFL, Keith Rivers.

Hmmmm, ending a first round draft pick’s rookie season. Why, oh why, does that sound familiar?

Would it have been okay

if he had a been a third-round pick, or a vet?

If you step on the field, you expect to get hit. And if it’s clean, as this was, you don’t expect the guy to get in trouble, no matter how badly he hurts you.

I’m just saying ending a high-ish profile rookie’s season isn’t go to help hide this one under the carpet.

Where is the NFLPA

Why all this fines are comming after the dead of Gene Upshaw? where is the NFLPA taking car of their players? all around the league the players are getting fine for clean and legal hits. maybe Godell need a new car.

Duke say something that it would be interesting putting in practice, fine the reff for bad callings. If you would fine players lets fine also refs. they are hving the worst seasson i remember.

I hope Ward dowsnt get fine for this hit, it has an awesome block and legal.

by simbiom on Oct 20, 2008 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

So the NFLPA steps in when Pacman jones is involved in a shooting that cost him a season. They step in when Tank Johnson is busted with 4 guns and is suspended. Their silence is deafening. Wonder if you have to commit a real crime for them to get involved. If Ward gets fined, I think Steeler Nation needs to send a message to the NFL. And by that I mean a potential boycott of a game(s). The NFL is about money and I plan on spending my money elsewhere if this BS continues.

Goodell

I think part of the Rivers’ hit was Ward telling the NFL front office that he is going to do it his way, no matter the cost. The other part is that he was trying to spring Spaeth on a big play, obviously. And I’m not trying to suggest that Hines lined up to hurt someone to get back at the NFL FO, but that he had a mindset going in to blow a coupld of Bengals’ up, sort of to rub some salt in the Commish’s eye.

But Goodell is partially culpable in this, for inciting Ward. He should send Rivers a card.

seems legit to me, though I never want to see a guy get injured no matter how much I dislike him/his team

The first thing they teach you in football is to keep your head on a swivel.

There was a block like that in my son’s 8 year old football game on Saturday so I hope the league isn’t going to call that kid and slap him with a fine since it was the exact same thing Hines did.

It was an end around, and the WR peeled back and cracked a kid that was about to make the tackle. That sprung the ball carrier and he scored a TD. Thankfully the kid on the receiving end was not injured, but if it is ok on that level of football I don’t see why it isn’t on the professional level.

No one protested or argued, no one called for the kid who threw the block be suspended….nothing.

Troy was right about the league, so we will see how they react to this one. I for one don’t think that Hines will change his style of play for anyone, but should he really have to? I for one don’t think so.

It irrelevent

really that it was a first round rookie’s season that got ended really. If there is anyone to blame that he got injured it starts with Rivers himself. His first responsibitiyt should be to make sure he takes care of himself. You cant expect a wide receiver to do nothing but bring it full speed when engaging a 250lb linebacker or else he risks his own health. There was nothing illegal about the hits that Hines dishes out! The NFL or No Fun League is getting ridiculous about levying out these crazy fines because its not common to see a wide out knocking out linebackers!

Totally irrelevant about his draft status. The guy got hurt. But that’s the game they play. It sucks, I’ve had my jaw wired shut, and it sucks hard. But that’s the game they play. Ward shouldn’t be fined and I don’t think he will be on this one. There was absolutely nothing illegial about it. Hines lowered his shoulder, and took the guy out. Defenders do it every friday, saturday and sunday to recievers coming over the middle. I have said for several years that if I were a defender that got hit like that, I would want every media idiot, fan and fellow player to shut up about it. I would be highly embarrassedto have been levelled by a reciever. Well, Ward had the same thing to say yesterday…

interesting quote

It’s not good for my health, but I read the Ed Bouchette chat every week over at the PPG (http://www.pittsburghpost-gazette.com/pg/08295/921609-66.stm) and he pointed out a terrific Q&A by Jaguars.com columnist Vic Ketchman including a question that covers this topic so close to home.

Q: Kevin from Orange Park, FL:
What’s your reaction to Hines Ward breaking rookie LB Keith Rivers’ jaw? I, for one, think Hines Ward is a dirty player. Seems to me most games he purposely stirs up trouble and takes cheap hits.

A: Vic: I’ve watched the hit up close and in slow motion several times. I’ve even stopped the action at the point of impact. The block is clearly made with his right shoulder and there are no signs of using the helmet as a weapon. Ward’s feet are on the ground and he is in no way guilty of launching. At first I thought the block might be unnecessary but, on further review, it clearly springs the ball-carrier around the corner and denies Rivers the ability to make the tackle. Dirty? What’s dirty about it? There was no flag thrown. Fine him? They should pin a medal on him. In my time covering this game, I have seen head-hunting defensive backs try to cripple defenseless receivers. I saw Jack Tatum and George Atkinson target Lynn Swann; head-shot him repeatedly and even attack him from behind and karate chop him in the back of the neck. I saw Tatum cripple Daryl Stingley for life in a preseason game. I saw Thom Darden hit a receiver over the middle so hard I thought the guy was dead. I remember seeing Jaguars cornerback Dave Thomas crush Jerry Rice in a preseason game and celebrate as though it was the play that won the Super Bowl. In the preseason? How about the launch job on Anquan Boldin a few weeks ago? Well, finally, a wide receiver has come along who has decided to hit back. Ward is striking a blow for all the defenseless receivers over the years who’ve been targeted by defensive players with an intent to punish. All of a sudden, the hunters have become the hunted. I think everyone in the league is waiting to see what the league does about the Rivers hit. It’s going to define what the game has become and where it’s going.

quoted from http://www.jaguars.com/news/article.aspx?id=7357

The hunters have indeed become the hunted, and defenders are upset because they have never needed to worry about this before, and they think it’s unfair that it start now.

Of course Rivers’ could have prevented this whole thing by actually anticipating that Hines was going to make a play and try and block him. Was it poor judgment, poor awareness, or simple laziness that allowed him to be blocked by someone shorter and lighter? In any case he should be embarrassed.

You don’t come out of college expecting to get destroyed by a WR.

Lesson well learned.

Great quote

I loved how he made the point about the head-hunting DBs and Safeties in the past. To me, it’s just ridiculous that all of the defensive players are calling Hines dirty. I’ve never seen him go after a player except in the course of a play. I don’t see many LBs or DBs worrying about making sure the WR knows they’re coming. I don’t see any pass rushers worrying about blind-siding a QB for a sack. And, I sure don’t see any defenders afraid to crush a QB after a turnover, whether they are in a position to make the tackle or not. Nobody said anything about Ray Lewis ending our top pick’s season. So, all of this whining about Hines blocking too hard is laughable.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Oct 21, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

If you ask me

It depends on how you define dirty. He’s not trying to hurt people. He is trying to hit people, even when they’re only marginally in the play. However, he’s almost always within the rules of the game and historically this has incited other players to take shots outside the rules of the game and get penalties. The equivalent on OL would be knowing how to hold a guy without getting called vs. I don’t know, gouging someone’s eyes out or choking someone while under a pile-up.

great quote

by that Jags writer. if Rivers kept his head up (like he should) he would’ve seen Ward, and probably ran right thru him.

by TheMostViolentTeam on Oct 21, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

True

My main point, I guess, was that the league seems to be applying a different standard to Hines versus defensive players. Like I said, if a QB throws an INT, a pass rusher then becomes a blocker, and he’s allowed to hit the QB as hard as he wants, unless the ballcarrier is clearly past him. He can throw a crushing block at a QB who’s not looking. They do it all the time. Isn’t that essentially the same thing? And, nobody is more protected in the game than QBs.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Oct 21, 2008 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you Wolfpack

In no way was that hit illegal or even close to being on the edge of the rules. I think the comparison to getting away with holding is way off. Holding is against the rules. Sure, it happens nearly every play, but it’s against the rules. Blocking is not.

The guy was heading to tackle the runner. Hines stepped up, lowered his shoulder and took the guy out of the play. Was it violent? Absolutely. Was it unnecessary? No way. Like in the quote, Hines helps spring the runner. Like I said above, defensive players make this same kind of hit on receivers at every level of football from high school on up. And the only guys ever crying about these hits are the pussy defenders from the AFC North who can’t take what they dish out on a weekly basis. This whole ‘controversy’ is absurd and horseshit.

Since he wasn't fined for this one

apparently the league agrees. But, I’m irritated that he got fined at all for unspecified plays. Apparently they did clarify one of them, but IIRC, it was only him stepping over a player after the play was over. That also happens all the time.

ridiculous

Hit #2 on the Eagles’ punter, and they flaunt that as an awesome hit… I guess when all your team has going for you is a top notch defense that’s just not quite good enough to put away games, you have to get excited about something.

How about..

Hines play strong safety if Troy can’t play the whole game. I guarantee you receivers will be short armed with number 86 lurking in the secondary.
