Holmes Busted on Possession

Bumped. Oh by the way, BTSC is the official sponsor of Santonio's ProFootballReference Page. "Tone I'm not mad. I'm disappointed'. I always hated that speech from the parents.  Sigh. Keep Your Head Up Santonio! - Bllitz-

Haven't seen this posted too many places but it seems to be true. He could face a possible suspension (up to 4 games).

All I have to say is WHY? Holmes WHY? (at least he was cooperative). Nowadays, pot possession is so common it is no big deal, but still.

I don't really see this warranting a suspension but you never know. Never can tell with Goodell, especially when it is about Steelers players (joking.....kind of).

Couple more things to keep in mind,

the biggest of which is that the report says he wasn’t impaired, so thats a little comforting (as far as suspension goes). Also, it appears that it wasn’t even his vehicle.

Fudge

THIS SUCKS

Great thing to see first thing in the morning. What happened to cops just taking your stash and smoking it themselves? Nice how he wasn’t even doing anything wrong to get pulled over.

Ah well, moral implications aside, at least my avatar is even cooler now.

Damn it it’s gonna suck when ‘Tone gets suspended later in the season. Hopefully it’ll be against browns or ravens when we already have the Division wrapped up.

Maybe ’Tone can convince Big Ben to stop funding drug dogs in every city they play in. Maybe change it to something useful like donating to the police benevolence association or buying them some kevlar or something useful instead.

Yeah, the browns will be a nice one to get sweed in on. The ravens game may turn out to be absurdly important.

I think he was pulled over for 'DWB'.

Seriously, when the hell are they going to legalize? I could care less who smokes! If Holmes was using meth or something, then I’d be worried.

WHATS WITH OSU

Shame to see this one, but seriously what is with the players from Ohio State U – Buckeyes, they seem to always wind up in the NFL and with problems..

At least is was only POT, and he stopped beating his women… He should get a community service award for his respect to the police and authorities,, usually they flee and crash into someone..

GO STEELERS!! 420 at Hienz Fields (guess the buckeye is really a pot tree, just check out the leaves)

Buckeyes are all criminals

And yes, I only say that b/c they (with help from the refs) stole the National Championship from Miami in 2002*

*yes, I recognize how hypocritical it is for a fan of the U to call another teams players criminals. So?

by cjmulrain on Oct 24, 2008 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Refs

The refs let a Miami player mug the Buckeyes receiver in regulation without calling pass interference on a 3rd and long. That first down would have pretty much iced the game.

And, I’m not a Buckeye or Miami fan. Just sayin’.

Sadly

The Buckeyes have their fair share of problem children in the NFL, but I think it is more about odds than an issue at the school. When you have so many of your players go into the NFL like the other big schools, you are going to get a few bad eggs in the bunch. Don’t get me wrong I hate this. I wish I never had a Buckeye or former Buckeye in the press for stupid shit like this.

There is like 35 to 40 former Buckeyes in the NFL right now. Only one is in trouble. To me it is one to many.

Over on PGH it is reported that Kevin Faulk pleaded guilty to the same exact charge and got a 1 game suspension. So all things being equal that is what it should pan out long dong silver.

GRRRR....

Stupid. I wonder how the steelers will react. Whether we’ll see an extra suspension from them for stupidity.

With how often they drug test in the NFL what makes any player think they’ll get away with this? Honestly… I just don’t get it.

Thankfully the league is a little slow on these matters. Its unlikely that the Rog can get a suspension in for this week.

The Rooneys, and Coach Sunglasses, on the other hand, may take it into their own hands, and they can act as quickly as they want. I see Santonio as a pretty important weapon this week, but I don’t think that even plays into the discussion in the front office. Moral stands > winning, I think.

as a Giants fan

I’m obviously hoping they suspend him for this week, but not just b/c it would help the Giants on the field. It would also reconfirm my respect for the Steelers organization and prove that they and the Giants are in a class above most teams in the league (and like 3 classes above the Cowboys).

Plaxicoland, here we come

This is very disturbing to me. I’m not naive enough to think the Steelers draft or sign choirboys, but one would have thought they’d learned their lesson after drafting Plaxico Burress. I know, Santonio hasn’t displayed so far the warning signs we saw with Plax, but to me, to risk the potential distraction on your team as it’s about to start such an important stretch run against a murderer’s row of opponents, smacks of the same kind of egotistical conduct. Bottom line: we thought Limas Sweed was kind of a luxury pick for when (gasp!) Hines retires or moves on; it may turn out we need him sooner than later.

by Flying Polamalus on Oct 24, 2008 11:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This may mean

that the FO just lets him go after his first contract expires, like Plax. Then, we’ll be back to our revolving door at WR from the 90s, although Sweed seems like a high character guy that we may keep for years to come.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Oct 24, 2008 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know it’s illegal and not the best for image, but I have a hard time getting riled up about possession of pot. As a younger man I had the same charged leveled against me and do you know what the result was? A $50.00 ticket. It was still against the law and all, but seriously…

I understand if the FO wants to take a stand and suspend him, and really this leads one to question his character issues considering how much he is getting paid not to get caught with drugs. But there is a long, very very long list of things he could have been charged with that are worse, and I don’t think that pot possession will be a serious strike against him.

right but...

I agree that in the grand scheme it’s not a big deal. But what bugs me is that you’re in a sport where they drug test regularly! I’m not a smoker, but have no problem with those that do. What I have a problem with is people that can’t stay away from a substance when they’re getting paid ridiculous amounts of money to do so. I know holmes is young, but he should be smarter. He knows what the repercussions of his actions will be.

I hope Tomlin and Co. bench him a game. I wouldn’t mind it being this game. Send the message that stupidity will not be tolerated, no matter who you are.

Similar to my disappointment with Ben for riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

Don't disagree

I could just see this as a reason they let him walk, especially given that he will likely get a big contract from someone. When is his contract up? If they sign him to an extension the last year of his contract, we’ll know that they view it as a minor issue.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Oct 24, 2008 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Too early to write him off

I would be shocked if the team dropped him over one incident like this. Despite some terrible decision making on his part, he’s really done no harm and acted appropriately with the police. Plaxico is a whole other level of ego from Holmes. I don’t think the situation is comparable … yet.

that they release him. Just that they may not work too hard to re-sign him at the end of his contract.

sweed

assuming holmes is suspended for a game or two – does anyone think sweed can step in and make a couple big plays? Very disappointed in his efforts thus far, but maybe he’s not a practice player, and given the opportunity in the big time he will respond. Dont get me wrong, I like Nate he’s been solid this year. But I would like to see Sweed step up in holmes absence.

Please....

someone inform Santonio he is in the NFL, not the f*cking NBA! Unacceptable behavior! Dumbass. Just another example of how many athletes are pretty much idiots when it boils down to it. For the hundreds of thousands of dollars a four game suspension could cost him, why not save the chronic for the off-season? He could have used the money for a sabbatical to the Amsterdam and get legally lobotomized by some killer black hash!

Jiminy Christmas

According to the AP, police found “marijuana filled cigars in his car…” Back in my youth I remember kids rolling up mini cigarettes and getting a great deal of mileage out of one of them, even passing them around so that several could partake from that one joint. The thought of a marijuana cigar astounds me. I guess when you are the home run threat on a team you go big-time. This is very depressing.

It's time to test our depth, I guess

I’m surprised Ricky Williams was only mentioned once here.

I guess I’ll try to be cautiously optimistic. Not a lot of people expected Mewelde Moore to have a solid game against Jacksonville and he did. Hopefully Washington, Sweed, Baker and even Miller (if he’s not required to be in the backfield helping to block Justin Tuck the entire game) can give Ben adequate guys to throw to against a pretty average New York secondary.

by CrosbyMalkin on Oct 24, 2008 3:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

sucks that he is out sunday

But in a poor attempt to look on the bright side, at least we get to see how Baker plays in a regular season game (he looked good in preseason). Plus, maybe Sweed will get a few more chances to show us what he can do.
Another thing to keep in mind, Ben’s 3 and 4 Wideouts are considered tall, combine that with Miller and Spaeth, and Ben might be able to just launch the ball straight up in the air and let his receivers out jump the opposition.

by shleeve on Oct 24, 2008 3:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My prediction

I think things are going to be alright overall. First off, he wasnt high when the cops pulled him over. Second, he had like all of 3 blunts on him. 3rd, he was highly cooperative.

I think Tomlin’s call to deactivate him for this week may even help keep the NFL from hitting him.

I think he will either get a 1 game suspension from the NFL, or they may just decide Tomlin handled it well enough.

On another note, Limas Sweed anyone?

Can't stand suspensions

for possession of weed. The shit’s not performance enhancing in the least; I say you give him 6 extra points just for getting his ass off the couch and turning off the cartoons for a Sunday afternoon.

He got busted right downtown by Mellon Arena … aren’t the Pgh. cops being screened? Clearly they should know that if they arrest a fella named Santonio it could negatively impact the city’s Sunday pastime.

Glad I live in California … still legal in these parts … though you do need a state-issued medical ID card. $150 a year for the ID and no possibility of possession charges.

Remember that old interview with Joe Namath:
Reporter – “Joe, do you prefer grass or AstroTurf?”
Joe – “I don’t know; I never smoked AstroTurf.”

by Fahey on Oct 24, 2008 5:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lol at joe

Joe was the shiz, he’d say whatever and it always came off as awesome….

But seriously, to sit there and get all up in arms over this drug is kind of annoying.

Something in Santonios favor however is the fact that Matt “bloody nose” jones of the Shaguars was given a 3 game hit for the cocaine. Not only that, but he had a history behind him of it.

So I think that helps give Holmes some chance of only missing 1 game.

by Mechem on Oct 24, 2008 8:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it may only be one game but...

still, I don’t like to see our players miss any games. If Goodell suspends him on top of what Tomlin has decided than that is two games gone, thats two too many for my taste. I hate it enough that he is missing the Giants game as is, we need all our players for this one.

All that being said though…..I don’t smoke but for crying out loud legalize it. Steelers’ playing time is in jeopardy. That cop needed to get his priorities in order…..Steelers THEN upholding the law…..

Embarrassed x2

As a Steeler fan and a Buckeye fan, this just sucks. This is not the news I wanted to start my morning with. This really bothers me. I always liked Holmes. He never had issues in college, and the press doesn’t cover it up like the Woody days.

We already have the toughest schedule and a ton of injuries, we don’t need the players doing stupid crap like this.

by SteelBuckeye on Oct 25, 2008 9:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with SteelBuckeye

Football is a team sport and Santonio knows the rules. He let his team down and I am really disappointed in him. Several prognisticators, including myself predicted a huge season for him. As it stands, Hines Ward is continues to be the best receiver on the team and Santonio can only aspire to his level. He also might want to take a page out of Hines’ book on personal conduct. Greatness is earned, not handed out. It might be time for a little self reflection.

by Steev1705 on Oct 25, 2008 5:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Distraction = letdown?

Santonio’s stoner move (plates, license, smoke) is now a distraction to the team.

So far this season Tomlin has managed to keep the club together and focused on game day. Now the team is facing numerous distractions this week from Santonio to Hines’ issues with the league to mounting injuries.

Do the Steelers come together and rise to the challenge tomorrow against the Giants, at home on almost nationwide TV, or lay an egg?

by herewegosteelers on Oct 25, 2008 6:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I still like Holmes but...

it is disappointing for sure, use your head man!
However, I say we rise to the challenge tomorrow (of course I say that).

Heres another poor attempt to look on the bright side…….we all know what davenport did and now his nickname is dumptruck….from now on whenever Holmes drops a pass we call him stoned hands (or something more clever).

by shleeve on Oct 25, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pot

So just had to weigh in on this one. Agree with the suspension. Given the rules its the way to go, but when the hell can we grow up as a country about drugs?!? And when the hell will police stop harassing motorists who are not impaired?

I thought I would share a song by my favorite songwriter on the matter. Change the lyric to “How I came to be suspended on the day of the game” and you’ve got the ballad of Santonio Holmes.

Dan Bern – Jail

Song Lyrics
I wish you well on your travels
My friends I wish you well along the way
This is the story of how I came to be
In jail for a night and a day

Well I’m driving my ‘88 Olds Cutlass
It’s raining and it’s dark
My wipers are beating slow and steady
Like the thump, thump, thumping of my heart
I’m rolling down from up in Colorado
Some little town in Texas tonight
When my rear view flashes blue, blue, blue
It’s a cop; my license plate’s missing a light
He smells sweet green Colorado
Hidden in the lining ‘bove my head
Next thing I know there’s four cop cars flashing
And around my wrists are bracelets of lead
Well, take my license, take my fingerprints
Take my wallet that I’ll no longer need
Take my belt in case I want to hang myself
For a nickel bag of weed
Then put me in a cell on an old mattress pad
To measure out in minutes this night
One cup of water in styrofoam
Four walls and one fluorescent light
And this is my one phone call
And baby I’m calling you
You tell me, “stay strong boy”
I say “well, I’ll do the best I do”

And I wish you well on your travels
My friends I wish you well along the way
This is the story of how I came to be
In jail for a night and a day

Now at first I’m thinking, man, I’m such a fuck-up
My head is lonesome and bowed
Figure I’ll join some program, get religious
My abstinence will make my mother proud
And I stare at the stone cold floor
I guess that’s what you do in the pen
Then I get to thinking what I’d really like to do
Is to come back here and fight this to the end

Your honor, think of Johnny Cash
And Elvis and Hank Williams too
Whatever it took to go get those songs
Those good old boys would do
If it’s illegal, then throw out Blonde on Blonde
And every Beatles song since Hard Day’s Night
Go ahead and burn Walt Whitman
Unpaint Starry Night
Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, let ‘em burn
Kerouac, Thelonious Monk
Alice in Wonderland, Picasso
Burroughs, Blake, Ginsberg, throw it out, it’s junk
Then throw out all your favorite records
Throw your books of poetry away
Close the museums, burn the paintings
Restore us to Galileo’s Day
Then to the drug store we will go
For Vicodin and Chloraseptic spray
Scarf a couple Darvocets and Xanax
And then we’ll go floating away
Dear Governor, dear Governor, dear Governor
The ultimate enforcer of my fate
Did I interrupt your three-martini lunch?
Are you off on your cigarette break?

Well, I wish you well on your travels
My friends I wish you well along the way
This is the story of how I came to be
In jail for a night and a day

Next day, my buddies bail me out
Toward late afternoon
And the grass, it never smelled greener
Sun drips honey like from a golden spoon
I jump in the car and drive on out of there
Soon I’m miles away
And I get to thinking what awaits me
When I come back some not-so-distant day
Will I stand before the judge
And say, “Your Honor, this law, it is wrong”
Or do I just do the time and pay my fine
Shake this town from my boots and be gone

I wish you well on your travels
My friends I wish you well along the way
This is the story of how I came to be
In jail for a night and a day
