Steelers Seek to Shut Down Red Hot Clinton Portis
More thoughts on ths game coming up Thursday-Monday, but let's start with a look at Clinton Portis's 2008 season to date. I think it's safe to say that if the season were to end today, Portis would be handed the NFL MVP Award.
Let's first take a look at his overall season stats:
Wow. Porits has a chance to flirt with a 2,000 yard season. He's also on pace to surpass that mythical number of 370 carries, and though the Redskins acquired Shaun Alexander just a few weeks ago (did you know that?), neither he nor Ladell Betts has taken much of the work load off of Portis' shoulders.
In fact, Portis's carries and production seem to be on the rise this past month. Let's see how he fared in the month of October, a month that saw him tie OJ Simpson as the only backs to have 4 straight games of at least 125 yards rushing on two separate occassions.
Could Porits possibly approach the 2,000 yard plateau? It's not likely, I'd say, but it is worth pointing out that CP typically improves as the season progresses. Last year, his two strongest months were in November (437 yards) and December (392). Same for 2005 (390, 461) and especially 2003, when he ripped off 6 straight 100 yard games to close, finsihing the year with 1,591 yards, a career best.
More on how we'll approach shutting down thie Clinton Portis led offense soon enough, but for now, take a look at those numbers and marvel. Sure would be nice to get that kind of consistent production in the running game, would it not? MVP type stuff from CP.

I'm probably out an ice cream
there’s a kid at my church that plays basketball with us on Tuesday nights – big skins fan. I told him I’d buy him an ice cream if CP gets over 60 yds rushing…
lol
hmm…not guaranteed but i like your buddys chances to be eating a frozen treat :/
never know though. We’ve stymied some impressive backs this year, including knocking out MJD and Westbrook from the game alltogether.

We did ok with Jacobs as well.
I honestly think Jacobs was a bigger threat with our type of D. But now you got me all worried about Portis.
I’ve watched a few skins games this year and overall can say that I am very impressed with Portis.
However, it is worth pointing out that in those 4 games you mentioned:
DET – 31st in rush defense
STL – 29th in rush defense
CLE – 24th in rush defense
PHI – 9th in rush defense
The eagles is the only impressive running day. Earlier in the season they were quietly stomping on the run, though they seemed to have regressed a bit lately. The other games were good for teams getting better stats…
I always hold my breath no matter what with our defense after the jags games last year. After stopping the giants and our D-line still being healthy though, I have full confidence in our team to stop this beast. I’ll paraphrase Blitz from somewhere else on this site:
“YOU DO NOT F&!ING RUN ON THIS TEAM!”
yes BUT
youre not accounting for what the Skins did to their rush defense ranks. Detroit…sucks. St. Louis aint great either. No doubt. But Philly is Football Outsiders 4th ranked rush defense, Cleveland is 18th.
Three of those teams are suspect, but the Eagles are no joke, and he ran thru them on the road. We’re better than the Eagles rush D I think, but still, if we’re banged up and playing T Carter, and Snack has a bit less push, or Woodley isnt as explosive…things might not be quite as routine as we take it for granted to be each week (rightfully so).

Sorry man. I do not buy the football outsiders stats at all this year, at least on defense. The steelers are ranked 4th on overall defense and 2nd in rushing? Nah, I’ll pass on their adjusted numbers for now.
Like I said, can’t disagree on the eagles. They stuffed our run for sure.
allright
forget FOs numbers.. I dont consider them gospel either, btw.
but my original point was that those teams rushing ranks are as low as they are at least partly beacuse of what portis and washington did to them. with just 7 or 8 games, one bad game of rush defense can hurt quite a bit. not so much in case of st louis and detroit, who have sucked all year, but cleveland and philly defeinitely have given up fewer yards on the ground all year long than they did that day.

doesnt really matter
As I tend to agree that we’ll make it hard on portis. I think theyll throw a lot more than usual. But its still really impressive that hes been able to do that when teams likely are trying to stuff him and force Campbell to beat them instead. The consistency is outstanding and def a testament to Jim Zorns commitment to the run.

You know I just had to disagree was all :)
I go into every game looking at the D with cautious optimism. Our defense looks absolutely solid until we have one of those days. It may never happen, but when it does I don’t want to be the guy who said that no one will ever burn our D. I’ve stopped looking at the O with any semblance of optimism, cautious or otherwise.
Consistency
We can always point to a few exceptions (i.e. the Jacksonville game last year), but the Steelers run defense has been one of the most consistent and reliable units in the NFL for the past decade. No one’s perfect, but Big Snack, Aaron Smith, and the Steelers linebackers have shut down better runners than CP in the past. I have to think that the Steelers will keep the red hot Portis under the century mark because they have shut down the running game this season as well as in recent years.

45% ???
I can’t believe that 45% of the voters thought that Portis will go over 100 yards. I am not saying that it can’t happen but that seems like a high percentage of Steeler fans that think Portis will go over a 100 yards.
For the record, I voted that Portis will get between 51-75 yards.
I agree with those who are unimpressed with the run defenses that Portis has faced to date. Most of those defense are poor. The 3 run defenses that Portis has faced that should be at least decent are NYG, Arz and Dallas. The Giants and Cardinals held him in check. The Cowboys didn’t, but they are clearly not playing as well as they should be.
And I wanted to post something about the Eagles run defense. I know that they are ranked high, or at least I will assume that based on the previous posts (I’m not going to double check those claims), BUT their approach to run defense needs to be considered.
The Eagles play a 4-3 where their lineman are small and active. Their defense is designed to take away the pass. They do this with quality corners who play aggressively and take their chances by even playing cover zero at times. In the meantime, they have their linemen shoot gaps towards the qb and try to fill run lanes with a lb or db. In effect they are selling out by run blitzing on the way to the qb. But if your offense can show the ability to beat them over the top (forcing them to drop their safeties) and the offensive line can lean on them, you will wear them down.
This is what happened in the Dallas game. Dallas showed the ability to pass protect and was able to go deep in the beginning of the game. As a result, Jim Johnson was forced to play more coverage. By the 2nd half, the Eagles front 7 couldn’t hold up and Barber and Jones were gashing the Eagles consistently.
Contrast that to the Pittsburgh game. Our offensive line obviously couldn’t pass protect at all and therefore we couldn’t go over the top. As a result Philly kept running their stuff and stopped Willie on the way to Ben. And it didn’t help that we didn’t continue to keep running in an effort to wear them down.
Pittsburgh’s run defense on the other hand is completely different from Philadelphia’s. It’s brawnier if that makes sense. Aaron Smith and Casey Hampton are much bigger than any of Philly’s def linemen and are much better against the run. Keisel probably would be one of their better run defenders, although he is our weakest. And our linemen mostly two gap. And while we often have Pola up at the LOS, we don’t rely on run blitzing dbs nearly as much as Philly. We have the personnel and scheme to play the run well while still being able to prevent the big pass play. That’s why we almost always have at least one safety back and often have the corners play off the LOS.
Anyway, this is my long winded way of saying that I’ll be surprised if Portis has a big day against us. Now I suppose there is a chance that he may break one long run to make his overall numbers look good, but I doubt that he consistently gashes us for 5+ yards, or even 4+ yards.
Eh, something like 25% of “steelers fans” said they’d rather have eli than Ben before last weeks game on a poll here. You can’t trust the polls when the opponents team is clearly padding the ballot, though I’m more willing to believe that 25% of “steelers fans” want Eli than the likelihood that Portis will run for 100 yards this week.
Clearly Redskins fans like to think that portis is the second coming of jesus in an RB outfit and that he is twice as good as brandon jacobs.
I didn't realize...
I didn’t realize that many of the opposing team’s fans would visit this website. (For example, I don’t even know where to go to visit a redskins blog and I don’t feel like searching for one.)
only reason
is because this post was picked up on Sports Illustrated’s Redskins page, not the Steelers one. So a shit ton of Skins fans voted :) Thats all
