Thoughts on William Gay?

Anybody else think this kid is going to turn out to be a good CB? This kid is a special teams monster. Usually the first one down the field and pretty good at making tackles. I became impressed with him in the preseason games he's played. He seems to always come up with big plays and damn near had a pick-six for about 95 yds last week. I think he has a nose for the ball. Anyone have any similar or differing opinions on him? I know there isn't much to go on just yet. He'll be the nickel back this week, correct?

Agreed!

although I’m pretty sure his jersey sales aren’t going to break any records! : )

I think he’s a little small but I think he will be a good nickle for the Steelers for years. I think the Steelers will need to draft a big athletic CB type on the first day next year if we let McFadden walk which is likely.
I was a little upset that Gay and TC gave up that big 30 yard 4th down pass down the sideline against NYG but was reminded by the crew that he seemed to have made all the other plays that day and had Clarke been healthy he’d have likely gotten there.

draft a CB in round 1?

Negative. Taylor, B-Mac, both not 1st rounders and both excellent and able to play taller than they are.

Lets be honest we need O’line support. Bad. The rest of the Offense is stellar, and the Defense is on point. We need to upgrade at OT and DE, our ends are getting up in years. I mean like the average age of our D-line including backups is about there with John McCain.

Read Closer

The exact quote is “need to draft a big athletic CB type on the FIRST DAY next year IF we let McFadden walk.”
Don’t know if you knew this but the Steelers should get at least 3 picks on the first day of the draft. With a compensatory pick for 66 it could be 4 picks. You don’t think they should take a CB on day 1 if McFadden walks? Hmmm. Interesting. Don’t you think the play of the secondary is creating opportunities for the pass rush? You think Gay is a starting CB ready to shut down Moss and Chad?

Yeah I caugt that

Sorry, I did catch that the next day after posting. My bad.

I do think they take one on day one IF AND ONLY IF B-Mac leaves. But we tend to sign defense and not offense. I think he stays.

I do agree, the reason our guys can sack the QB is cause he has nobody to throw to. It all has to mesh. Defense is 11 guys.

I honestly want to see him retained and for deshea to help mentor Gay and hopefully we can have a very good core group on that end for quite a few years.

We shall see

A nose for the ball is great, just ask Anthony Smith!!!

You need to be able to discern what an offense is doing as a whole when playing in the secondary and that comes with time and patience. I just hope he doesnt bite on the first pump fake thrown at him or it’ll be a loooong day.

I think he can play on the running game really well. Obviously that’s like requirement #1 when trying out for the Steelers. But his deep coverage is my #1 concern and we shall see.

I wonder

if Mundy hadn’t gotten injured where he would be right now…despite all the nice comments in the Post Gazette from Lebau about Anthony Smith, I wonder if TC would be on the street and Mundy getting ready to start his first career game.

We gotta re-sign B-Mac and get another CB in free agency or through the draft. Can’t have the front we have and let the secondary go. I think D-Town will retire after this year, he’s been great for us but I think its time, either that or I think he slips to the Dime/Quarter packages. If he doesn’t leave then we just need to re-sign B Mac.

Big test for the young William Gay this week…let’s hope he shows us a little something to validate our high opinion of him.
