I'm new to blogging so please bear with me. I just joined to get some good insight from true Steeler fans. Im very happy to go int our bye week 4 &1 record. Big Ben could really use the rest . Does anyone think The Steelers may look to sign any offensive lineman? I feel that  we have more wholes than swiss cheese and Big Ben may not last the season if it doesn't improve

Not much out there

There are a few folks around these parts that would love to see Bentley get picked up, but I figure this late in the season we’ve got who we’ve got. Hopefully we’ll just find a combination that can keep ben’s internal organs internal.

o line

Stapleton looks the part to me and could get moved to the left side next year as a solid starter.

o line

Yea he looks good but we need Ben to learn to get rid of the ball just a little quicker. He is tough as nails.

Why would we replace Kemo? If anything I’d like him in the center. Last game he got pushed around a bit but was able to usually finesse his guys to the outside and keep them away from Ben. As I understand it the centers can usually get away with being a bit smaller, and that would probably play to him a bit more. Hartwig has been doing his job though, so for now RG it is for darnell.

Kemo's a free agent

So if he’s not willing to take a fairly modest contract we should let him walk. He’s decent now (needs a lot of work on pass blocking) but not worth a big contract. the knowledge that Stapleton could fill that spot gives us contract leverage.

by Chicago Steeler on Oct 8, 2008 12:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd be surprised if they didn't lock him up

He’s already the best run blocker and he’ll get better in pass pro.

Yeah, I just can’t see us letting the guys that are decent go. I’m sure there is someone better than Kemo but there are too many question marks on this line. Actually, every SINGLE start on the O-line is a question mark.
Colon: Maybe he is OK
Stapleton: Maybe he is OK/good
Hartwig: Mostly does his job, protection assignments seem sometimes poor
Kemo: Best run blocker, gets beat mentally and not great in pass pro
Marvel: Getting old and not looking like he used to

I just don’t see how we can afford to let Kemo go.

Sorry, I guess I just don’t see simmons coming back, nor do I want to.

Too Early

It’s too early to say anything about Stapleton. Yes I liked what I saw out of him, but he didn’t totally dominate enough to make assumptions. I remember after week one or two we talked about contract extensions for Kemo and Marvel. Let’s see what he does for another week or two and get back to it then. For the record I’m for extensions for Kemo, he’s straight up scaring defenses when he pulls on the edge (Brodney Pool), but pass blocking tahts another story.

Too Late

I also think its too late to get a free agent linemen in the fold, but I am open for whatever they can do to keep Ben on his feet.

Willie Parker

It will come down to how good our defense is if we are going to contend with the top teams. However I feel getting Fast Willie back will give our offense great chance to improve on some bigtime plays with his break away speed. Get back "FAST WILLIE " we need your help.

Coaching

Our hopes lie in whether or not Tomlin, Arians and Zierlein can wring improvement out of what we have. I think physically, our guys are fine. They are big and strong. The improvements for the players need to be in technique and awareness. The coaches are responsible for these guys getting the support they need for this improvement. Once the coaches are aware of whatever strengths and weaknesses a particular unit has, they need to gameplan accordingly. Just because we have sucked at times does not mean we have to continue to do so. That is why we have coaches…..make better players.

Coaching

Correct me if im wrong but usually the discipline is instilled into the o-line by the coaches correct? Am I in the minority here when it seems to me that the O-line has been making a ridiculous amount of silly penalties this year? Granted you wont ever not have one but it seems we are averaging 5-6 penalties a game at least just from the o-line.

It is a sign

of players over-concentrating on things other than the snap count. When you have gone through the abuse they have, you are looking for whatever little edge you can to improve the situation, and instead end up committing dumb penalties. Discipline is the first thing to go for young OL who are pressing. I would also imagine the amount of time spent on things like blitz pickup have taken away from the simple “learning to go on 2” drills. We made progress on the first, hopefully we can get back to the 2nd.

OL pickup

I think we really need to find another OL, but not a starter. We’re not going to find a mid-season pickup or trade that will improve our line. However, we’re very thin along the interior with Simmons going down and trading Mahan. I thought (and said) trading Mahan for a 7th rounder was a poor, depth-killing decision, and I say the same thing now. Say what you will about him, but he would have been a damn fine #7 or #8 lineman that could cover all the interior spots. Now if Hartwig happened to go down, we’d have to seriously shuffle the line.

We haven’t added anyone to replace Simmons, so our reserves are Starks, who we KNOW won’t ever see the field, Essex, who is okay at LT and waaaay too weak to play anything else, and Hills, who is a non-promising weak/slow/green red-shirt rookie. I think we need to pick up an older vet who’s out of work – the Orpheus Roye of the interior OL – as a 3 position backup. If Bentley would be willing to play that role, I’d be all for it. I’m sure robert ethan would disagree, but I doubt we can count on Doug Legursky for anything, and I can’t think of anyone else that was even in training camp with us that we could get. I’m sure there are a few guys that have some starting experience like Matt Flynn or Bentley that may be looking for work and could fill in for us as needed.

oops, I meant Mike Flynn, the former ravens center, not Matt Flynn, the rookie QB.

Welcome to Steelers Blogging!

If you think business is slow now. . . wait until you get hooked on this!!!

As far as picking up OL help, I think once the RBs get healthy they’ll probably drop back on someone like Dookie and pickup a reserve, but its not like the Steelers/Rooneys to go out midseason and go big on a trade with a team like OAK or STL. Like some others said, the Steelers have to think they can still make due with what they got in Stapleton, Colon, Starks if needed, etc.

Enjoy the site. . . always like to see out of towners (like myself now, unfortunately) keeping up with Burgh talk on here.
