Do the Browns Suck?

The Brownies were billed by some as the team to beat in the AFC north this season. They had a great O-line, a couple of potentially good QB's, good receivers and a defense that promised to be much improved after big free agent signings.

Four games into the season, they are 1-3, with their only win coming against the hapless, State of Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Team (formerly the Cincinnati Bengals).  They face a looming QB controversy and a disgruntled fan base that has begun calling for the head of the head coach.

So does Cleveland just suck?

I don't think so.

I think that while they are not as good as billed, they a very tough schedule to start.  I also think that they now have the toughest schedule in the League this year, since they have to play us and the Ravens on top of the two toughest divisions in football.

My sense is that they are a young team that is still in the process of building. The next couple weeks will be crucial to them, but they could still be a very dangerous team down the road.  I don't think they will threaten the Steelers for the Division, but I do think they will play much better in the second half.  Thoughts?

Of course they do!

I would say that regardless of on field performance, they will always have a certain suckiness about them! I think it is those horrible uniforms, and ill-mannered fanbase.

That being said, unless they get better play from their skill players on offense, and some better D, they are going to have a long year. If they make it to 8-8, I would be surprised with the schedule they face. 6-10 is my guess.

Yes.

Simple answers to simple questions.

by Cols714 on Oct 7, 2008 6:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes,..they suck. Individually they have talent,..but compare their players to ours for a couple of seconds:

Braylon Edwards has got to be the most mentally weak receiver in the league,….he’s constantly being baited into heated trash talk with cornerbacks who get in his head and he has no discipline. Compare that to Hines Ward,…Hines is the one that does the baiting and he’s the one that gets into the defenses heads. Then we have Derek Anderson,..DA is fine when everything goes according to plans. The second he throws an interception or faces pressure,..he collapses like a souffle. Big Ben throws an interception,….then lights up the Jags for 300 yds and 3 TDs. Mentally tough.

Shaun Rogers,….great talent,..the second they start losing he’s in his own world. Casey Hampton and Aaron Smith give 100% when things are going well or poorly.

No one denies the Browns are talented. But that talent will never amount to anything because theres nothing between the ears.

just wanna add that Kellen Winslow is probably the only winner on that team. I feel bad for him,…cause he’s talented, dedicated,..and mentally tough. I’d love to have him as a Steeler.

Sorry

Can’t agree with the Winslow comment. A TE/WR that can’t or doesn’t want to block on the line, and he has the ego of a QB. Personally I think we have the best TE in the game with Heath. We just need to get him the ball more, but until the O-line gets better that is hard to do

by SteelBuckeye on Oct 7, 2008 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i love heath

but Jason Witten is the best TE in the NFL right now

What?!?

You would LIKE to see Kellen Winslow as a Steeler?!? Think about all the trash talk he does to the Steelers. His trash talk alone is much much more than everyone else on the Brownies.

this is a good comment

Mental toughness does separate our stalwart players from theirs. Good thoughts ismail.

you left out arrogant, over-confident and injury prone.

I despise Winslow. Hes a punk. After that ‘soldier’ shit, i wouldn’t feel bad for him if he was on a team that lost 16 games every year. If he came to the steelers I’d still hate him. Some guys will NEVER wear black n gold, and thankfully, guys like him and his ego are one of em.

by steelerark on Oct 7, 2008 6:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

See,….I don’t think thats fair. I think you guys are letting your judgement (or pre-judgment) of him from his Miami affect your analysis of him as a player. The whole soldier thing happened when he was about 20,…who hasn’t said stupid crap at that age? As far as not blocking,….I wouldn’t say he “doesn’t want to block”,…he’s certainly not very good at it. But don’t conflate that with him not being willing to do it. His strengths are more as a pass catcher. But what he does,…he does well and he can take a hit. You guys CAN’T deny that.

I’m sorry,…but I have respect for Winslow. And if I can respect him,,…i can certainly feel sorry for him.

And I too wouldn’t trade Heath for anything,….but if we could have Heath and Winslow,…sorry but I’d accept that.

by ismail on Oct 7, 2008 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok

I am a Winslow hater. I have been since way before the soldier comment, but I still don’t want him in the Black and Gold. I feel Tony G from KC is the best TE/WR I have seen so far, and I wouldn’t want him either even in his prime. Sorry, I am old fashion. With a Strong D and running the ball, you will be in every game.

Also, where do we get the money to pay to stud TEs and 2 Stud WRs?

by SteelBuckeye on Oct 7, 2008 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never said we should get,..nor did i say we “can” get him. Obviously its not feasible. All i said was I would not mind him in a Steelers uniform.

I agree with ismail

Winslow has been the one consistent football player on their team, and that’s all that should matter. Porter was a dick, but we lived with it and even enjoyed it when he was playing well. Even so, Winslow actually has been a very good citizen and teammate for the last few years, since he doesn’t have anything to prove anymore. Who’s the guy arguing with Anderson on the sidelines? Braylon Edwards. Who’s the guy minding his own business, trying to keep the peace, who hasn’t asked for more catches or talked about being a soldier in 2 years? Winslow. If he lashes out, it’s the “Come on guys, we’re better than this” type of lashing out, not the “You need to get me the ball more than 1/3 of the time” type. Not only is he one of the most productive TE’s in the game, he’s been a great teamate and non-asshole for about 2 years.

I’d also like to point out that he hasn’t missed a game since his early bike rampages, and Gates and Gonzalez never blocked either. I’m not suggesting we trade for him or anything, but if all else was even, I’d pick him over Miller.

he has cleaned up his act recently. I’ll give you that.

Interesting point Bad

I agree Winslow has cleaned up his act. If I played fantasy football, I would try to have to have him on that team. Seeing how we don’t throw enough to our TE’s now, I am curious why you would take Winslow over Heath if all things are equal. Do you think he would force us to open up the offense? This isn’t a dig. I am curious of your point of view. Personally I think Heath could be up there numbers wise with better play calling/ play design. He never drops a pass. I am beginning to think he is the number 3 or 4 read on every pass play, and with our o-line it is hard to get to them.

by SteelBuckeye on Oct 8, 2008 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not thinking too hard about how it would affect our offense, all I’m really saying is that Winslow is better than Miller. I like Miller a lot and we don’t use him as much as we should, but Winslow is possibly the best pass-catching TE in the league. Miller’s blocking isn’t anything to write home about. I don’t want to trade for him or pay his salary, because we probably wouldn’t use him right and we already have plenty at the skill positions. I’m just defending him from the numerous attacks he’s getting here. He’s probably the most talented guy on their team, and he’s by far the most consistent. For a while he was looking like a selfish prick that wasn’t going to make his team better, but he’s really matured in the last few years. I can appreciate a good redemption story.

Thanks for the great points. I also wanted to point something else out,…one of the things I hate the most is when other fans (Ravens and Browns) whine about Hines Ward because of his so called “cheap shots” and him being a “prick”. Hines Ward isn’t paid to be nice to division opponents. So I can’t disagree more with people who says Winslow is an arrogant prick. Sorry but I think thats a good trait in a football player. I have absolutely NO problem with Winslow jawing at our players or even crossing into the grey area with blocks every now and again. Thats what he’s paid to do.

by ismail on Oct 8, 2008 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right on

How many game changing personal fouls have come from Hines getting under someone’s skin. It’s only a problem if it destroys his own team’s chemistry, and I don’t see that in Winslow.

Soldier

I didn’t hate him for the soldier comment at first, but the more I saw that he continued to be an arrogant prick, I started to. Sorry, I would not like to Winslow with the Steelers. I expected a lot more from him in the pros, and all he’s done is waste the first two years of his career by be blowing his knee out driving recklessly on a motorcycle. He’s finally starting to show something in the last couple of years, but nobody’s calling him the next Tony Gonzalez.

The Browns

They don’t suck suck. They are just the Browns. They throw up a lot of offensive numbers last year against a weak schedule, and the press fell in love with them. Once again the press loves a team that scores points, but are weak on defense.

That being said, I still think the are moving in the right direction. They have improved their D. They switch to the 3-4, but they don’t have the LBs to run it. Their coach isn’t helping them either. The play calling and clock management is pretty bad. They need a new young coach with some fire. I like their new GM, but I still think Quinn was a reach.

by SteelBuckeye on Oct 7, 2008 7:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nope.
They suck.
They’ve made the playoffs one time since joining the league again and have only 2 winning seasons. They started out 1-3 in a year when they were supposed to be good. They aren’t any good.
They suck.

And who on that team is supposed to be good? Edwards? Head case, one good year in 4.
DA?
Lewis?
They have a few good players, Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach, Kellen Winslow, and Shaun Rogers. That’s about it.

OK, they suck. Maybe I was being to easy on the Browns, but still think they are moving in the right direction.

Great link HSS

People have every right to their opinions, and I respect you guys’ opinions on Winslow. I’m sorry, but just because he was 3 or 4 years younger when he said the soldier shit does not mean anything. The kid is a punk. You guys say he has changed, but how do you know that? What has he done to show you that? The link above is just one more bit of proof for me. But do you remember what all went down with the whole soldier crap? He friggin stood over an injured player and gloated, then in hindsight, admitted that he knew the guy was hurt. That’s the kinda guy you would want? Talent doesn’t mean shit without character. Ask the bengals.

by steelerark on Oct 8, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL

Ok – I guess I am in a decided minority. I wasn’t saying they were great, mind you, but I guess my opinion of them remains a bit higher than the rest of the board. The only game I saw them really play this year was the Steelers. It looked to me like the defense was a bit of a mess – primarily at LB – but that the DL was strong and that their secondary could be ok.

I am curious to see if they show up against the giants. I would have a hard time believing that they would win, and I guess that they really can’t afford to many Moral victories, but still…..
.

Brady Quinn

Ive said this before and ill say it again. Derick Anderson was a one year wonder and Brady Quinn should be starting. I know Quinn hasnt proven himself at the NFL level yet but ive seen enough of him at Notre Dame to know that hes the better QB. Anderson couldnt even beat out Charlie Frye.

Borwns SUCK

Seriously, their Front Office did an ok job getting the right players. Their coach and his staff just plain suck. They have tons of talent, they just aren’t mature enough to man up and put it together. How many wins do you think we could get with that team from our coaches? They benefited from a JV schedule last year and now they are playing varsity squads.

With regards to DA, he got exposed at the end of last year by Cinncy of all teams and by the Steelers. They should have taken a 2nd/3rd round pick for him when his stock was high. Now, they are stuck with 2 backups. I mean this is a guy that Romeo had to use a coin flip to decide between him and Frye.

I just hope they don’t get the Jaw next year…he definately would change things around.

by vin2k on Oct 8, 2008 9:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ah man...

Now I got sad thinking of the Jaw being anywhere else…

I still maintain the scariest possibility would be the Jaw going to A whale’s vagin-I mean San Diego. Norv Turner is still Norv Turner. You put the Jaw in there with that type of defense and over all talent? Oofta.

Cowher

A whale’s what!?!? :) Haha, that was hilarious! Apparently, there are University of Tennessee fans that think he may go there. My brother-in-law works at UT, and he said that’s the rumor. I would be absolutely shocked if that happened. When he comes back to coaching, he’ll be the most sought after coach in the NFL. I don’t see him ever going to a college team unless he just wants a low pressure job somewhere to coach in his old age.
