russell should see more carries

with as bad as the passing game has gone, the steelers must go back to their roots if they want to go anywhere.  to do that they need a power running game.  not like the days of the bus mind you, those days may never come back  but just going back to the days of running it 55-60% of the time.  willie parker's return should help but he is nowhere near ready to take 25-30 carries a game.  i don't think he was ever that type of back to begin with. 20 carries should be his maximum. mewelde moore has played well but he is suited better as a weapon coming out of the backfield.

who else is left? gary russell.  the steelers need to see what they got in this kid.  he needs at least 8-10 carries to not only show what he's got but he is the closest thing to a road grinder the steelers have.  the line needs to be reshuffled for this set up as well.  first off, starks and kemo should NOT be on the left side.  they need to have all that bulk on the right side where it is needed most.  other than hartwig every linemen is miscast.  kemo and starks on the right side, darnell stapleton and his athleticism on the left with (assuming he plays) marvel smith.  this leaves out willie colon but he is better suited as a backup anyway.  that setup actually has the makings of a successful line.   the steelers will never win a game that they don't hit 30 rushing attempts and more  than 25 passing atttempts.  not with this personnel.  not against their schedule.  oh and since ben wanted the tall receiver would it hurt so much to try at least one long jump ball pass down the sideline to limas sweed a game????

good fanpost

Thank you.

Agreed. Let’s get Rusell the ball more. It may be boring and it may be awful for Arians due to his roots as a finesse guy, but I think we should run run run, if only to limit mistakes for awhile and hopefully loosen the defense.

Interesting thoughts about the line. Not sure what kind of precedent there is for totally shuffling things midseason when injurys arent the impetus, but its something to chew on. Colon on the left side kinda scares me though, esp in pass protection

Yeah, we can’t shuffle the line around right now.

I just don’t get why switching our guys would help. Every team has different strong sides…

Last time they gave the ball to Gary..

..he netted 0 yards on 4 carries. I wouldn’t hold your breath.

true but look how many times willie parker would get 0 yards on 4 carries before popping one

the bus also was a notoriously slow starter and needed carries to get warmed up. patience is the key with the running game and the steelers MUST change their offensive strategy.

But later in that game the Steelers threw the ball 4 times from inside the 5 I think..

..while Gary watched from the bench. The following week they pushed Mewelde Moore into the line 3 straight times from the same spot with the same result, while Russell sat and watched. It isn’t like the position is complex or anything, and I’m not sure how he is going to be any better after watching and practicing for 2 years.

Line is ok

Robert, lets look at other times Russell has played.

Just look at the Jacksonville game where he managed 25 on 6 carries, including a 15 yarder.

He had 1 run for 8 yards against NYG in a losing game.

So while you provided his one negative game, he has shown signs of good ability.

he looked good as a kick returner...

hopefully we continue to see him at least in that role – maybe if he breaks some good runbacks they’ll try to work him into the offense a little more….

who knows?

hello people,

this is the stuff we already discussed earlier in the season. And I have also talked about the the importance of the power game in november and december. Its very necessary.

I don't have stats or anything, but

given the penetration through the line on run plays (e.g. moore getting stuffed at the end zone last week) wouldn’t part of the solution be to run outside the tackles with a 2-back set and TE blocking in the secondary? I just don’t see a lot of success running up the middle this year.

But hell, I mainly watch to shout myself hoarse at the defense.

At the goal line we did run a 2-back set with a TE blocking, and that didn’t work out. Running outside on the colts is tricky because their LBs and secondary have a lot of speed, I don’t think we could have gotten very far on them.

Against other teams I’d definitely like to see us try and bounce things outside, but I think only FWP is fast enough to really have a good shot at it. I am not a fan of seeing FWP pound it up the middle, that’s for damn sure.

I agree on the outside

I thought the calls at the goal line worked good. We just caught a bad break cause Kemo didnt smother that guy on the play. We doubled him and he still survived.

IF kemo sits that guy down MM walks in.

I do think we avoid the left edge way too much.
