Post Mortem on Steelers-Bungles

The Good:

Offense seems to be getting some rhythm.  Its still nothing to write home about, BUT it feels like they are beginning to find an identity. It may not be the identity that we all want, but you have a sense that they are getting to be on the same page.

Aaron Smith: The D-Line gave up 40 rushing yards. There was a 20 minutes stretch between the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter where we did not give up a first down. In the midst of it all was the churning heart and soul of our working class defense – a guy who is a big part of  the reason those two linebackers will get to go to Hawaii – a guy named Aaron Smith.  You usually have to look away from the ball to recognize how good Smith is.  Not today. Today you just had to watch it get deflected at the line of scrimmage. 3 pass defenses. Absolutely huge.

Running back by committee (or injury): We are beginning to see what I think would be really good ball distribution numbers for our running backs.  MM, GR and FWP all had touches this game. By the fourth quarter the grinding running game wore downt he Bengals.

Bruce Arians:  I can hear you all out there sputtering and chocking on your Permanti Bro’s.  “Buddha,” you say “did you not, just spend the first half of the season, disavowing your non-violent nature and calling for Bruce Arians head on a stick”.

Perhaps, but, somewhat like Bruce Arians, I can admit when I am wrong and learn from my mistakes.  Our offense is not the greatest show on turf. It’s not the 07 Patriots. For crying out loud it’s not even the 05 Steelers, BUT its beginning to find an identity.  We may not love that identity yet, but I think that from a coaching perspective this was the best that BA did.  I really like that he is keeping Heath involved – the offense is using smart pass plays. It’s the second straight week without a turnover.  All in all kudos for a well coached game by BA.

Winning: Yes, I know, the Bengals aren’t a football team, they are a work release program for multiple offenders in Southern Ohio.  They call them the Bungles for a reason. They haven’t had a decent football team since we rolled over their chances in the 05 super bowl run.

You know what, they are also the same team that almost beat the Giants, tied the Eagles and beat Jacksonville this season. They came in with passion and played hard in a game that could have gone their way early, but for a couple of breaks.

But we ARE winning the easy ones this year. Remember the Jets game last year. That was the beginning of our great unraveling. Thankfully we stepped up big this time.

No Sacks: I don’t care that it’s the Bengals. I’ll take it.

Luck: Ben should have had two or three interceptions at the beginning of the game.

Limas Sweed: Ok, I know the rook almost cost us a 10 point swing by sheer Anthony Smith like bone-headedness on special teams, but he caught two passes. I chalk it up as a win. Now is the time to start growing this young man’s confidence. We will want him around in the stretch. I like his stride and his hands have looked better. I would love to see us try some deep balls to him this season.

The Bad:

Injuries: What the hell. When will this stop?  Still no news as of yet on FWP or Kiesel.  Looks like Tone has a concussion.

Pass Rush: Hard to gripe, but I think we were all hoping for a pad that stat sheet kind of game. Instead our pass rush yielded one sack and surprisingly little pressure. Hard to account for that considering that Bengals were using guys who play in the fourth quarter of preseason games against our best guys.

The Verdict:

Hey what the heck, we won right? Hopefully we didn’t get too many injuries. The game showed a bit of development of  the offense. All in all its hard to complain - well not that hard we are football fans after all. I think we are learning that this team may be one of the elite teams IF it all comes together at the right time. At this point its just to hard to say if that will happen, but it sure is fun watching them grow.

yea

Kudos to Arians. I criticize him just as much as the next guy but he coached a good game this time around. I was actually impressed to some degree.

one more negative: penalties…………….guys, wtf?

It was still just the Bengals. I would hold off on any acknowledgement of BA until he scripts a good game against a real NFL team.

by vin2k on Nov 21, 2008 11:17 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hey

He still scripted a good game, something he really doesn’t do. Its a start so I am going to applaud him for that, I am by no means approving of his choices throughout the season but this game was solid. And like I said, I applaud him for that, now if only he can do this more often.

Strange game..

..it almost seemed in slow motion. I suppose the weather and the playing surface played a big part. Everyone seemed to be playing not to hurt themselves out there, and still managed to do exactly that. Looks like Parker might have to shut it down for the year pretty soon. He seldom finishes a game anymore. Russell seemed promising, but when you look at the final totals, just 5 yards in 3 carries. On defense, nothing spectacular, but still they gave up just 10 points.

Don’t know that any questions were answered, the Chargers and the Bengals are two of the worst defenses in the league, and the Steeler offense was just adequate in both games. They didn’t really start to dominate until half the Bengal regulars were out of the game, at that.

But one week closer to the playoffs, and one win closer to the playoffs.

Russell

But what a 5 yards they were. 4th and 1, no blocking, he bulldozes his way for a highly critical first. Moore or Parker would have gotten stuffed on that play. 1st and goal from the 2, touchdown. That’s 3 yards on 2 carries where he got everything there was to get.

+1

although, moore isn’t necissarily a pushover. He ran pretty hard last night, including pulling a Bettis and literally running over a LB. But yeah, those 5 yds were HUGE.

Ha ha, that play was brilliant to watch!

Add to the bad

Punting was horrible. Teams are gaining 15+yards by punting, forcing a 3 and out with a punt. I think we may have seen the last of Ernster.

I was really happy BA playcalling in general. I think it was his best game of the year.

by _ET_ on Nov 21, 2008 2:36 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This from an AP article....

The punting never showed up, with Paul Ernster averaging 28.4 yards on five punts.

According to STATS, Ernster has had two of the Steelers’ three lowest single-game punting averages since 1970 in a span of five days. He averaged 31.0 on four punts during the 11-10 victory over San Diego.

“It was horrible,” Tomlin said

Random Thoughts

Nice to see the team put one away; they covered my 14+ prediction but made it look different.

MM got screwed by not being allowed the short run outside to score the TD he set up. After being much aligned for getting stuffed on a couple of well-defended “up the middles” lately, he deserved the opportunity.

Clearly, sending the backs wide once in a while pays dividends. If you had told me last night that Russell was 3 carries 5 yards I would have said you were nuts.

For the grace of God [using the phrase only with no religious convictions intended], Ben remained INT free. Nice to see someone else failing to take advantage of a QB’s largess. We must catch uncontested INTs; Troy’s INT was a beaut.

The review on the Sweed punt debacle was certainly a time waster; it was so obvious.

Bengals dropsies certainly kept them from putting tremendous pressure on the D.

Hit on Holmes was certainly a helmet to helmet, deserved a flag and, if Hines’ recent experience is a barometer, will draw a fine.

Wonder what the line judge was looking at when he failed to miss the two face mask grabs on MM, one obvious and one a little less so. I’ve seen Steelers called for pass interference for less contact than that allowed on Hines Ward.

Nice to see the number of penalties drop from 13 to 4.

Thought that Papa and Collinsworth were a little over the top on that “magic” that is Ben. Forgot that Chris is 6’ 5".

It did seem to be a slow motion game; agree on that.

Dick LeBeau is a true gentlemen. Hard to believe he’s 71 and played with Night Train Lane.

Nice to hear that looks aren’t important for Marisa Miller.

penalties

I think the refs stopped calling penalties on other teams. Their OL held all day, which is almost passe at this point, but there was that hit, 2 blatant facemasks, and a very borderline PA call that they didn’t make. It’s getting ridiculous.

the officiating was horrible

all the way around. There were actually 3 obvious facemasks, 1 on the Steelers and 2 on the Cats. Several holding penalties and the Steelers got away with several false starts. I also think that the pick called on Washington that negated the 44 yd pass play to Ward.

by steelerark on Nov 21, 2008 11:36 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow

that was some crappy grammar on that post. Meant to say that i thought the pick called was iffy.

by steelerark on Nov 21, 2008 11:37 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, that facemask by willie gay was pretty bad.

by steelguy99 on Nov 21, 2008 12:20 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Moore has gotten plenty of recognition and plenty of TDs, and moreover he’ll have plenty more down the stretch. Mr 33 deserved his TD for his fourth down run. How often lately have we seen our RBs get stuffed on a run like that? Russell would not be denied.

by steelguy99 on Nov 21, 2008 11:03 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Russell's

4th down conversion run was HUGE.

by steelerark on Nov 21, 2008 11:37 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

looked like steeler football

I saw a classicly run game yesteday and I loved it. The gorgeous resemblance to 05 made me smile all over.

TE usage, check.
Getting tough yards, check.
Power run game, check
Big ben on the move, check.

It had it all.

by Mechem on Nov 21, 2008 8:29 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Check ...

and double-check. Those are definitely good reads in the “glass half full” category!

Glass is really full!

Yeah I found very few things to complain about..
That having been said its cincy so its like playing a bunch of 6 year old girls dressed up in tutu’s

Ben on the move!

I’m glad he finally remembered that he’s allowed to tuck and run it. 2 huge runs last night, one for a first down and the other for the final TD. He must be feeling awfully spry to be powering through tacklers like that.

by JHolmes on Nov 21, 2008 9:10 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

BB's wheels

I think Big Ben is reading Ed Bouchette’s Q&A. The question the other day was if Big Ben had lost his wheels. Something about him not running for first downs this year.

Sure enough, he goes out last night and runs for a 1st down and a TD.
I think I will ask this week about why we are not using the power run formation more with McHugh as the FB and Russell as the RB….maybe Bruce is reading the Q&A as well, sigh

by vin2k on Nov 21, 2008 11:12 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

actually

One thing I’m noticing is a lot more McHugh as FB. Granted we still run a lot of single back sets, but I’m happy with the change from Carey. I like Carey and his ST contributions but McHugh can maul and still has the ability to catch and run.

by Chicago Steeler on Nov 21, 2008 12:00 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That’s the thing about McHugh though, he’s just a tight end. Imagine if we had McHugh blocking as a TE, Kreider at FB, and 36 behind him? Who would deny that pile 4 yards a carry?

by steelguy99 on Nov 21, 2008 12:22 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This made me smile

This was probably the thing I found most re-assuring. We havent been using bens monster legs in a few games since the ’Skins and here he was handling business.

Tells me hes feeling a whole lot better to have that shoulder leading the way.

Something going unnoticed

After feeling out his new head coach position last year, Tomlin has put his signature on the defense. What you se on the field right now is a product of two potent defensive minds. Dick Lebeau is a legend and Tomlin is a honor student of Tony Dungy’s. They have put together a monster.

Hmmm ...

Have you been able to determine what part of the defense reflects Coach Tomlin’s specific contributions?

by tenthmtnman on Nov 21, 2008 11:31 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cover 2

The bend but don’t break philosophy has been added to the secondary. That’s not to say that Lebeau didn’t know how to run a cover 2 scheme, but MVT was a good resource on this. We used to run a lot of Cover 3, or single high safety stuff. These days unless we’re jamming 8 in the box we’re letting the corners react to the shorter passes because they have coverage behind them.

by Chicago Steeler on Nov 21, 2008 11:55 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's pretty much like you said

What I have noticed is they can run cover two and you not know it until the ball is snapped. Lebeau and Tomlin have taken the best of the zone blitz and cover two and used “hybrid” defenders to disguise which one or which flavor of the mix they are using. I think we will probably find out if there is a seam that can be exposed next week at New England. We should be able to get a few sacks because I have no doubt they will try to force something down field early.

I can tell you

The defense is more focused on not giving up big plays. That was always a problem under Cowher. Sometimes it seemed like we were so focused on the run (playing cover 3, as ChSt mentioned) we opened ourselves up on the backside.

I also think Tomlin has the defense motivated and focused. A great example is the punt issue we had. They forced the Bengals to go 3&out, go off the field, only to have the ST screw things up. Well, they go back on the field and give probably their most impressive stop of the game in 4 downs. I swear Cowher’s defense would have been pissed and given up a couple plays there.

The secondary is also playing at a high level, regardless of the scheme.

DB play has picked up tremendously. Ike is playing well, B Mac is/was playing great and young William Gay looks like a baller. Thats where I think Tomlins influence is being noticed the most.

Defense wins Games

1. No way, No how the Bengals could have won this game.
2. Steelers have # 1 Defense. Ranked 1st in every Defensive STAT.

Looked like the Offense was having fun just playing with these guys. Kind of a front for the Power teams we face in the immediate future.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the team bring in another running back..

Parker doesn’t look like he will be fully healthy again this season. Moore is a handy third down back who is best utilized as a pass receiver out of the backfield. But nothing more than that. Russell has done little so far to suggest that he could be a full time back, and the coaching staff treats him as a very last resort. Mendenhall, of course, is next year.

by robert ethan on Nov 21, 2008 4:50 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but who?

I agree with what you are saying here. Likely we may see Dookie back on board.

Still im not a big dookie fan (lol) and so i wonder who else we can hustle in here?

I wonder if any of Denver’s ex-RBs are around. They went through like 5 of them in the last 2 years and a couple did well.

by Mechem on Nov 21, 2008 4:56 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dookie won’t be back unless russell gets hurt. If they work out anyone it will be someone who can be an every down back. I don’t think it is going to happen.

by steelguy99 on Nov 21, 2008 5:07 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

I wonder whats up with Parker exactly.

Both his injuries are tricky and dont just disappear. Especially the knee.

He looked good last week… Grr.

by Mechem on Nov 21, 2008 5:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Haven't seen it mentioned....

but GR’s kickoff return was the best I’ve seen from us in a long time. Hope they keep that dozer in there plowing through folks.

Also, did anyone else notice the verbal shrug from the ref when Cincy took a knee thinking they had an offfside penalty. The guy just sounded like, “I dunno – no foul on the play.”

Also, maybe we should get special jerzeys for the defense that light up when their being held or something. When Collinsworth mentions that one of the Bengals linemen is doing a great job on the outside they cut to an image that shows the guy hugging Harrison with both arms – HELLO!

Oh well…glad for the win, I think it’s movement in the right direction, but my guy FWP just never looked like the same as he did last week.

For the folks that are praising the Arians calls….his script for the beginning of the game wasn’t going so well. It looked very constant and very familiar – run on first for short or no gain. Pass. Pass. Punt. Repeat.

I’m hoping they have some things left up their sleeve to bring out against the crapiots next time.
