My pats preview

Well since I have time and am quite bored, I'm going to preview the game against the New Cassel Patriots.

The Pit vs Pat rivalry has been pretty much close to one sided in recent memory. The pats thumped the Burgh in the playoffs twice early in the decade, and spanked them last year on their way to 18-1.

However this year, the pats have proven to be beatable. Lets look at some of their struggles:

4 losses. To the following teams:

1st, At home against Miami.

2nd, At San Diego

3rd, At Indianapolis

4th, Home against NYJ

But what made these 4 games losses?

*Yard per carry, Sacks allowed, and Red zone efficiency are noted*

Against Miami: 4.1 YPC, 5 SA, 1 INT, 2 FGs, 1 TD. 1/3 RZ

Against Chargers: 4.07 YPC, 4 SA, 1 INT, 1/3 RZ

Against the Colts: 4.06 YPC, 0 SA, 1 INT. 1/4 RZ

Against Jets: 5 YPC (1/2 of this is Cassel), 3 SA, 0 INT, 3/4 RZ

Take away the Jets game, because that was just wild and crazy, and lets look at the other 3.

What our defense needs to do

The number that stands out is the Red Zone efficiency. In those 3 first losses, we have a sad 3/10 score in red zone efficiency. The Pats have had issues closing out those last 20 yards.

Good news for us, because we lead the league in red zone stops. People are kicking short field goals like extra points.

What about Sacks? Sacks in these 3 losses dont seem to be the x-factor. After all, Indy never sacked Cassel yet they lost.

A common thread is there has been no BIG PLAY for the pats offense in all 4 losses. In fact, the longest play was 29 yards by Wes Welker in the Jets game.

Again, we excel at avoiding the big play, our defense doesnt allow them ever.

So following this common thread, what we can see is this:

If we lock up the redzone, and keep the deep ball out of it, we will win this game. Sacks never hurt, as we can see the games where Cassel WAS sacked were pretty much blowouts (Miami by 28, Chargers by 20). The Colts game was very close.

We can win this game by a substantial margin if we apply pressure and keep them kicking field goals.

On Offense

Due to request I decided to examine some of our offenses prospects.

The pats defense ranks a decent 12th. Again, when we consider that they havent handled too many major offenses I am skeptical. The best win was a crushing beatdown of Denver, who has a up and down team. Their last two games had opponents scoring 34 and 28. Pretty high counts for NYJ and MIA.

NE has been allowing other teams to convert 45% of their 3rd downs. Pittsburgh is allowing 37%.

This can bode well. Because NE gives up on average 7.8 yards per pass, and 3.9 per run. Both are solid numbers, but they are pretty easily workable. Without FWP however we may have a tough time on the run. If we start with a solid 2-3 yard gain, we can easily land a pass to get the first.

NE has  been doing great at keeping teams from getting first downs on the ground. Theyve only allowed 46, compared to 131 through the pass.

That in mind, I dont see us running all over this team. We should try to stretch them to the outside with Waltzing Mewelde though. This will loosen them up for hard inside running by Gary Russell.

The real goal though is to create catch and run plays by our receivers. I expect a lot of short hits to Santonio Holmes. He can be our Wes Welker for the day. Him and Hines ward will get the tough first downs that we need.

Probably the most crucial thing is keeping it interesting, if we get predictable we get pickable. Ben has to find the hot read fast, and has to respond quickly to the changes in the pocket.  I think Maxamillion Starks will handle Richard Seymour successfully.

My Concern comes from the LG area. If NE runs Mayo and Bruschi on stunts and try to play Kemo-Therapy while Hartwig is up the middle dealing with Wilfork, we could have trouble.

Ben will then have to flush out where Vrabel could be awaiting. This could prove bad. Hopefully the interior of the pocket holds up well.

Speaking of Vrabel, I dont like him against Willie (Drive Stopper) Colon. Willie has to play clean first of all, keep on the LOS and not hold. But Vrabel can make plays and Colon cannot.

I think however we allow 4 or less sacks. They only have 21. I figure 3. Provided we keep it to that, we can keep at least 1/2 our drives going into scoring range.

I predict 3 TDs and 2 field goals. I am thinking a RB will receive a TD pass in the redzone, an area the Pats have failed at defending. Another play will have another RB running for the score. Probably G-Russell. And the Last TD COULD be a Polamalu INT but I wont say for sure.

My prediction is 27-13.

Redzone

We’ve had our problems in the redzone, so I think you’re right about locking that up as being the key to success. Cassel’s developed a deep ball with Moss of late, so I think that will be a challenge for Pitt’s D. Your #1 so we have our work cut out for us.

Deep ball

When you consider they lost to the Colts and Chargers..

Both teams do a great job of removing the deep ball. We had what 4 deep shots to Nate washington in a row before those games.

If we mimic that Deep cover two, Randy Moss wont have a shot. The underneath stuff wont come easy. And of course, they cant run the ball on us.

This Pats homer...

…would argue Cassel and Moss hadn’t developed a deep ball yet, hence the losses to Colts and Chargers. There’s a difference in where Cassel is putting the ball today compared to where he put it 3 weeks ago. That being said, the proof is in the pudding. #1 D will be a challenge, for sure.

actually....

…they threw to Moss down field consistently for the first time because Miami didn’t dedicate double coverage to him. Daunte Culpepper earned himself an MVP just chucking it up to Randy. Any QB in the NFL should be able to get the ball to Moss with single coverage. Let’s give Moss and coach Belichik a little more of the credit, and let’s wait on handing out any credit AT ALL until the Patriots beat a contender, which they haven’t done. Denver is their best win. Denver, who would be 3-8 if the referees got it right.

I see things you don't see.

Look where Cassel was putting the ball

Previous games, it was in his breadbasket and knocked out by DBs. Now it’s “beyond” Moss, where only he can catch it. Single/double coverage won’t change that. Put it where only Moss can grab and the defense will have a problem.

The same could be said about Cassel and Welker

in the small-ball arena. After the first trimester of the season, Welker was actually dropped from our fantasy league for complete lack of production. He was picked back up and now he has got it going with Cassel as well. That whole passing game is blooming like a rose.

I think your emphasis is on the side of the ball.

Our troubles (w/ the exception of SD) have been defensive, not offensive. I think you throw out the Chargers game as an example of Cassel getting his feet under him (at least as far as the offense goes). The real problem for us in all of our losses — even the Jets game — wasn’t our own big plays, but the opposition’s big plays. We, like you, can get it done w/ the dink and dunk. What we have problems with is limiting untimely explosions by the enemy offense.

As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about. --Shaun of the Dead

...er, that should be "wrong side of the ball."

Our defense hasn’t had any trouble with untimely explosions by the enemy’s offense. They’ve had a lot of trouble with having to defend poor field position though.

27-13

I would love for that to be true…I just don’t think we are going to hold them to 13 points. I know Mechem has supported his case with facts, i just don’t buy it.

As a Steeler fan, when that spread is working like clock-work…rhythm is there, timing is on, effective spread running…it feels like slow, agony!!! And that Wes Welker…man is he good!! I hope one of our LB’s (Harrison, Timmons…hello) can crush him…especially when he runs those bubble screens…I can’t endure another game of him converting third down after third down…8, 9 yards at a clip and then bang, 30 yard TD…I fear him much more than Moss.

I do think we can win…and I have no idea how this game will play out…but I’m almost certain they will score more than 13. (again, somebody please crush Welker so i don’t have to hold my breath every time that little **it catches the ball!!!)

As a side note

although I’ve been a huge Steeler fan my whole life, I’m actually from Massachusetts. My whole family mom, dad, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins all big time-BIG TIME Pats fans. In most recent years when i go home to visit i’ve had nothing good to say about our head to head match up.

After Pats loss to Giants in SB, I visited in early March. And I have to tell you the city was still mourning the loss!!! They still could not believe they lost!!! Radio and TV shows still analyzing the game…but hoping for a better ending!!!

I’m not proud to say this…but I soaked it up!!! I even had to stock the flames a little…“so Dad, can you believe they lost?” My Dad didn’t want to talk about it, then could not stop talking about it…about 8 family members and I sat around the table talking about the game as if it had been played the day before…they were still pissed…

why did Belichek go for it on 4th down and not kick a field goal?
how the hell did manning get away?
how the hell did “that guy” make that catch?
what the hell happened to the OL?
       19-0…WE WERE PLAYING FOR HISTORY!!!

etc. etc. again, guys, I’m not proud of my behavior …but… i just sat there loving every minute of the conversation with a sly smile on my face and a weird sense of satisfaction!!!

hey Mecham,

I don’t see the other side of things. You sure this a preview? I looks a little incomplete.

Lol

Well I wanted to focus on what I felt was the way to win.

We win on our Defense, lets be honest here. Our offense has lost us games, our defense hasnt.

So I wanted to focus on what we NEED to do. I think we all know the basics on our offense, dont turn the ball over, dont commit dumb drive killing penalties, hit some quick reads so ben doesnt get sacked etc…

Weve been talking offense a lot, and frankly not discussing the D near as much since its so damn good. But I think with this team, we have a challenge, and I just felt like analyzing some of their weaknesses that also happen to be strengths of our D.

Last year...

I thought we would get consistent pressure on Brady, but I think we had a pretty stinky game in the pressure category – we let them dictate the defense (at least to my untrained eyes it seemed that way).

I’m just hoping that we don’t bend but not break ourselves into oblivion if you know what I mean. I wanna see Cassel in the dirt, but as you say it’s a challenge. They have so many viable outlets and they know how to use them. Even if you cover their little guy and their big guy they’ll go to Gaffney or someone else from nowhere.

We should be capable of the same thing with Heath and Mewelde out there, but it doesn’t seem to work for us. (Maybe because we don’t try it enough?).

Added offense thoughts

I decided to add some offensive theory from my brain. If you have the patience to read please comment. I discussed O-line and some of the play calling that I think works.

They do have lots of options, but we have a damn good defense. We allow 2.9 YPR and 5.6 YPP, i think we can stop em.

FO rankings

NE defense against the pass: 30th

For what it’s worth.

You wanna check that

I dont think so. NFL.com has them 12th against the pass in yards allowing about 212 a game.

by Mechem on Nov 26, 2008 5:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you are wrong

FO ranks teams based on strength of opponents and rates things like 3rd down yards more importantly than 1st down yards. Not everyone buys into their system, but I tend to believe that a teams ranking is somewhere between yards allowed and the FO ranking.

Again, you’re free to completely disagree with football outsiders, but FO has ranked them at #30. Completely separate from nfl.com.

footballoutsiders.com – enjoy

by steelguy99 on Nov 26, 2008 6:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh ok

Well I dont really check FO much, so my apologies.

But if you simply look at yards allowed they are 12th. And thats decent. That means most people arent hitting a huge deep shot on them.

by Mechem on Nov 27, 2008 9:29 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, FO stats are what they are, and yardage stats are what they are. It’s just something to keep in mind either way. FO says they suck, yardage says they are decent, so I tend to estimate their pass defense is somewhere in the middle – below average.

While the stats would leave you to believe that most teams aren’t hitting huge deep shots on them, might I reference nfl.com to point you to NE giving up the 4th most passes for 40+ yards? Right behind the jaguars, 49ers, and seahawks – not good company to keep. They’re middle of the road at giving up 20+ yards.

Wow

excellent pointage Steelguy99.

Thanks. Maybe I should play nate washington for fantasy this week now lol. Its tough to read this pats team this year because they seem up and down and I cant quite tell what they WANT to do.

by Mechem on Nov 27, 2008 11:05 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m not sure what they want to do either, but if they’re willing to listen to me I’d suggest they fail horribly, starting this weekend.

+1

You got that right. I suggest they all simply fly to alaska and spend a month there.
