My Ideal Offseason
I know the current season isnt over and that we have a good chance at winning the SB if we get our act together offensively but right now i see us going 11-5 and losing in the AFCCG. I also see us drafting around the 26th or so pick. Here is what my ideal offseason would look like:
Fire Arians and Zerlin
Promote Ken Anderson to OC
Hire Charlie Batch as QB coach and get former Tennesse HC Phil Fulmer to coach the OL
Let go: Max Starks, Marvel Smith, Kendall Simmons, Desha Townsend, Tyrone Carter, Travis Kirscke, Byron Leftwich, Orpheous Roye
Keep: Bryan McFadden, Anthony Smith, Trai Essex, Chris Kemo, Fernado Byrant
Sign: Jason Brown, C/G from Baltimore he is 6'3" 320 and at 26 he could anchor our line for years. Also gives the added bonus of hurting a division rival.
Shaun Cody, DE/DT from Detroit at 6'4" 305 he would be a good fit at DE in our system, but he could also add so depth at DT. He is young and would likely want to play for a winner and we need to get younger on the DL so he is a good fit here.
Kyle Boller, QB Baltimore with Leftwich leaving to try to get a starting job and Batch gone we will need another backup to pair with Dixon. Boller has played in 53 NFL games and has thrown more TDs than INTs (only one more but its still more) he would be a good backup because he has starter experince, can be signed for a fairly small contract, and is best suited to be a career backup at this point, much like Batch has been.
Draft-
1) Cirion Black, LT, LSU- there are a lot of quality tackles this year and there is a good chance Black falls to us in the first. He is a solid pass blocker and run blocker and is young and could protect Big Ben's blindside for years. 6'5" 325
(i would trade our third round pick and Willie Parker for an additional second)
2a)Terrance Taylor, NT, Michigan-solid player on a bad team which will likely hurt his draft stock. He is 6'1" 320 and could be Casey Hampton's replacement down the road.
2b) Sam Young, RT, Notre Dame-Big RT to replace Colon. Young is big (6'7" 332) and is athletic for his size. Likely to leave school early to get out of the mess that is Notre Dame football right now. Is probably the best player on a bad team. Is an excellent run blocker and is above average in pass pro.
(supp pick for Fanaca)
3) Jasper Brinkley, ILB, South Carolina-Farrior's eventually replacement and will help on special teams until that point. He is big 6'3" 257 and athletic.
4) Wopamo Osaisai, CB, Stanford- Very fast (4.37) with pretty good size (5'11" 199) Osaisai is a solid cover man and is a good returner, something we could definitely use.
5) Pannel Egboh, DE, Stanford-Big D-lineman (6'6" 290) that could be developed into a contributer on D.
6) Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas- Shipley is a good backup WR and can help on kick returns. He is a good team player and has good hands and performs in the big games.
7) Kirston Pittman, OLB, LSU - Played DE at LSU but at 6'4" 252 and a 4.65 forty he is a candidate for OLB in our system. Had 12 sacks last year but tailed off to 2 so far this year. Worth a bit of risk as a seventh rounder to get a potentially good player.
I know there is still a lot that can happen but if this was our offseason i would be thrilled and i would think that we have a great chance of a Super Bowl in 2010.

Boller over Leftwich???
Damn, you must be down on him. I’d take Lefty any day over Boller, who is an injury-nightmare. I’m not saying Leftwich isn’t but Byron does everything better
As for the Draft:
1. Go with the best tackle available, which will probably be Ciron Black. I like Duke Robinson as he’s really durable-plays tackle or guard.
2. Though I’m happy to hear that Taylor could very well be a second round pick, I’d go with Alex Mack C, from Cal, the guy is a beast (My post from earlier this year).
2b? Is our comp pick really a second rounder? Awsome. Then go with either Taylor if he’s still there, or Phil Loadholt (Mammoth Left Tackle out of OU).
3. Go for RB Charles Scott RB, LSU. That’s my reasoning for that. If not him another LSU teammate, Tyson Jackson, the big DE, perfect for a 3-4 defense.
4. A DB
5. A return specialist
6. A receiver
7. A long snapper.
To the tune of the classic children's song "This Old Man" (the part with nick nack patty whack)
Big Snack, Silverback, take the Dawg Pound's Bone, the Black and Gold sent the Brownies crying home.

I’d take byron over boller any day, but I sincerely doubt lefty sticks around. He wants a starting job somewhere.

4. A DB (i have a corner who returns kicks)
5. A return specialist (already got one, more d line depth)
6. A receiver (Got shippley out of texas, he can return kicks too)
7. A long snapper.( would never draft a long snapper, warren will be fine once he heals. add a development prospect)

No mack is projected really high so we wont get him in the second round. As for free agency i think we should try and get Jordon Gross

interesting
Byron will probably go which is fine by me. Groom Dixon for backup purposes.
I think Charles Batch sticks around for us though, but I dont hate the idea of putting him at QB coach. I like it a lot.
As far as offseason signings, I dont think we need to pickup many FA’s. I would like to lock up B-Mac and Silverback.
Draft:
1. OT
2. DE
3. OT
4. CB
5. RB
6. KR
7. RB
I think this gives you a chance to bring in extra fresh meat for the run game. Plus it focuses on our lines, which is where games are won/lost. We could use a dedicated KR but I do like Russell

Besides, the steelers are almost a complete fail when it comes to drafting solely for return purposes. It will be a waste of a pick.

i think that the three minor FAs that i have serve their purpose by helping with depth and the lines. taking free agents from the ravens is a good idea imo because it weakens their team. Brown is a big center who has done a solid job against big NTs and that is something we could use for a long while. I think that shaun cody can be a very good DE in our 3-4 and he is young which gives us options on the D-Line. having a o-line that looks like Black-Essex-Brown-Kemo-Young would be a above average line and is also a young line that could stay together for a number of years. i strongly believe that a decent line is all that is seperating us from a SB win. I think that a running back combo of Mendy, Moore, and Russel is more than enough to have a very good run game especially if we help our line

I’m not worried about any other AFC north team having a consistently good back to back seasons. We might as well take from the bengals because they’re probably the team to beat next season :P

agreed
I agree, I think if we simply pump that line up and get it back into 04-05 form you should see the first team in the NFL to get 6 rings.

Agreed. This team has what it takes, which is why this season has been so frustrating…

I would even go as far to say that
we are one good tackle away from a super bowl.

I'm not trying to get ahead of myself
but I think we can be a Super Bowl team with a bad tackle and a decent tackle at best (which is what we have now). A good tackle wouldn’t hurt but with the defense we got now we can beat anyone.
Anyway….
I think Townsends the type of player who might be willing to restructure his contract allowing us to lock up B-Mac. He doesn’t seem selfish plus he knows hes gettin up there in age, and as far as i know he didn’t complain at all when B-mac replaced him on the depth chart.
Prefer Byron over Boller if Byron doesn’t mind sticking around and Batch retires or whatnot.
I would be upset if they traded Parker, for multiple reasons which I stated awhile ago. I just don’t see something like that happening. Plus, whens the last time the Steelers traded a high profile player (which FWP certainly is), where more likely to release him (which also won’t happen).

I’d be happy keeping Byron over Batch even if Charlie doesn’t retire – but only if byron is willing to be cheap and 2nd string. Batch has shown that he can manage games, but his immobile and getting old self does not inspire me much in terms of him coming out and actually winning some. We need more from our QB now that our running game is tentatively crap. I’d love to see lefty stick around, but it won’t happen.

Did you really say Kyle Boller?
What would ever make you think that was a good idea. I would`t let that clown be our towel boy. He would never throw the towel to the right player. I like your top 3 picks, even though i doubt Sam Young comes out early. Notre Dame usually graduates their players.
