Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Washington Redskins - Open Thread
Ok Steelers fans. Two hours away until we see how we'll respond to our late collapse against the New York Giants last Sunday. A win here against a very competitive Washington team would have to make us feel good about our team, even if the offense once again plays inconsistently. It will take solid play, at least for part of the game, in all three areas of the game for us to escape FedEx Field with a win.
My keys:
1) Find a way to get Willie Parker involved while still utilizing what Mewelde Moore brings to the table.
2) As always, keep Big Ben upright. If that means incorporating quick hitting pass plays and unexpected running plays, let's hope Arians has designed some new looks.
3) Survive in the secondary without Bryant McFadden and possibly Ryan Clark, depending on his shoulder.
4) Limit the Redskins' big plays on special teams, as well as execute with our new long snapper.
5) Convert in the red zone, as well as force the Skins to settle for 3 when they breach our red zone.
I'll be here all game. Join me in cheering on the Steelers as they traverse into the largest and one of the loudest fields in the league.
HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!!!!

fast start
need a fast start tonight..dont want to get behind 7 or 10 quickly, then us resort to throwing too often, which would let them start the mad rush towards Ben
B Mc Fad
Great point on McFadden…I’m wondering why more people aren’t bringing him up. He hired Rosenhaus this off-season for a reason. He looked fantastic in replacing Townsend, and honestly, my wish was he played like that without Rosenhaus as his agent. He’s gonna ask for Clements-like money, and there’s no chance the Steelers are going to give him that.
probably right
this injury to him wont help his market value perhaps though. i dunno, i think it depends what we decide to do with marvel smith partly. if we let him go, perhaps there’s enough money to re-sign b-mac. but i think i agree. i think he’ll follow the $$$
I'm hopeful
I feel like the steelers might be able to get him on a short term contract. B-Mac knows that he’ll be starting next year with us and that based on the defense we’ve got he’ll have an opportunity to make a lot of good stats. His value is down because he hasn’t started a season and he’s been injured this year. If he takes a 3 year deal to stay for a little less then market he could line himself up for one big contract when he’s out of that based on the thought he’ll have a better chance to prove himself here then some place like Oakland.

off to the bar
Will miss ya’ll during the game as I’m off to the bar straight after work. Normally I like to be obsessive and loud in my living room, but cutting down on costs removed cable from my life, thus I’ll be out in public for this one. Hope it doesn’t get ugly.
My Keys: (for their minimal worth)
1. Make Jason Campbell beat us.
If we keep all big plays to a minimum and stack up their running game so that they’re facing 3rd and 5+ I like the steelers to win those matchups enough to win the game.
2. Don’t let our offense beat us.
While I get annoyed with BA’s play calling and his basic hand-cuffing of our offense, this year could be all about defense. We could reign big ben back to 2004 status of just making the easy reads and letting the defense win games and grind out what we can on offense. I love Ben’s ability to make the big play, but for the love all that’s holy that defense is ridiculously good. Let them win it. Just take the points where we can get them.
And with that, I believe we win it! I know football’s almost never that simple but I feel like it’s basically stop the run and don’t turn the ball over and we win this game.
I can't wait for the game!!!
Bout to put on my Steelers gear, and head out to be swarmed by redskins fans. I really feel like this game is a must win for us! I see us heading into a downward spiral if we lose with the upcoming games!! Come on Black and Gold!!! Do This!!! NOW!!!
think i may agree
Could get ugly moving forward if we again struggle to find any sort of identity on offense and maintain it for close to 4 quarters
NFL "Predictions"
Does anyone else get really annoyed with ESPN’s Fantasy predictions before games?
Roethlisberger 16-for-28 160 yards 1 TD 1 INT?!? Wwwwhhhaaaa?!? To quote Stanley from The Office, “Have you lost yo’ mind, cuz I help you FIIIIIND it!”
Ben did his Perfect Pushups this week, he’s gonna tear it up…
“If JEEEsus walked through that door right now, he wouldn’t be able to save you.” I’m liking the Stanley love.
On a related note, they had Gostowski kicking for 19 points, which is pretty ridiculous. I wonder if they just let a random number generator run for a while.

i have a
uncle living in washington, and loves the skins. when we were losing against the giants, all he did was text me constantly going: interception…hahahahaha…ha! Or the steelers r gonna get creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemed by the giants.
The grass may be greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed
i think the main thing we need to do on defense is
SHUT DOWN CLINTON PORTIS!!! did anyone see his numbers last week? they were like 21 carriers for 145 yards or something like that. everytime i watch this guy play, im just thinking to myself…Thank God i dont have to play defense on him, i mean he just runs all over the place.
The grass may be greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed
Portis
Five straight games with 120+ rushing yards…perhaps the best five-game streak this defense has been against since Lewis in 2003.
ya but...
Portis is much more elusive than Lewis. lewis is more of a downhil-tip-toe-stepper-bulldozer. Portis is an elusive-physical-dominator.
The grass may be greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed
True...
I’m just talking about the momentum he has going into this game, not about their respective styles.
Lewis had like 70 yards in the first quarter, and ate his ass the rest of the way. Too bad we were so bad that season, it was an epic Ravens-Steelers game.
alright...
i gotta go now, i might be back during halftime or at the end of the game,
GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The grass may be greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed
Online telecasts, streams, etc?
I don’t have cable, and due to birth of my second son (just ONE day before Troys!) I will not be able to head 40 minutes out to the nearest pittsburgh bar.
I don’t think the nfl.com site will have the companion broadcast tonite, so only other place I’ve been able to find it is at:
http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast.php?matchid=22372&part=sports
which uses tv ants, better than nothing, but 141k is a little hard to watch sometimes.
Anyone know of a good stream for the game?
Willie

Don't care how they do it
But I need them to win it tonight. I live in the District, and let’s just say I have not been quiet about how the Steelers were coming into this town to Tear. Shit. Up. tonight. If I have to go to work tomorrow with a loss to my credit… Well, it won’t be pretty.
So, shut down Portis, get FWP moving, keep Ben standing, whatever — LET’S JUST DO THIS!!!

I think
Holmes gets a long catch and run tonight off the blitz.

i don't get that onside kick?
our defense is gonna stop them either way so make them punt from the 20 and get the ball at the 40
i bet u are :)
Just what the doctor ordered for yall to start. Now its time for us to start panicking! Great :/
The Steel defense is solid
this game will settle down at some point
=====Curly R: The Redskins Blog=====
this is why the skins pass rush is underrated
They dont get lots of sacks but Ive read in multiple places that they bat down TONS of balls
The Skins are infamous this year
for getting a lot of yards without scoring much. They’ve been fortunate so far in bucking that trend.
2nd and medium situations
These are the plays that we seem to really suck at. I dont want to see a 2 yard run here.
Screen plays
WHEN will the Steelers develop a simple screen play to counter the blitz? Is it THAT hard?? Or a little quick slant? SOMETHING!!!!
don't know if you're seeing these political commercials too
watching in Pittsburgh using rabbit ears… I’m so tired of the ads… so ready to vote
That “rule” didn’t work last year, so MNF had some crazy convoluted way of phrasing it this year to make it seem predictive.
The way they usually state is based on the incumbent party winning or losing based on the Redskins. MNF explained it this year by saying “the party that won the popular vote the last election” instead of incumbent. This explains 2004 because Gore won popular vote in 2000. Pretty shady if you ask me.
I feel like the other team has a better chance of scoring when our offense is on the field than when our defense is out there.
When our defense is out there, I really feel like we aren’t going to give up points
yeah, seems like an important position to have healthy!

Berger
His hammy is obviously still hurting him.
that would be bad
this is a must win game…baltimore won…they arent that good but we need to get back on track with a tough schedule
Yeah, our offense looks awful every time we go up against a good D
I for one am dreading our game at Baltimore.
our O needs to do this
Put Davis back their at FB and run Parker 3 times in a row. We have yet to use the Power I
It’s just depressing to watch our O…we pick up 12 on the first play and go away from the fullback, power I and start up with the one back…Arians is a moron
Seriously, it is normally fashionable to hassle the offensive coordinator
But Arians just stinks. We have a hard-on for single back formations where 3 of our WRs are all standing within 1 yard of each other. Our protection schemes stink. Just not a lot of good things to say about him
starting to see some things work for the O
—how long do you think we have to wait to see some no huddle?
Campbell sandwhich!

nice
we gotta have holmes return punts. we need every last bit of big play potential on special teams
They played it well

We can run
put a FB in the back field and lets go jerome bettis on their ass
what is a FB? Is that one of those "full backs"? I thought they were illegal
I thought the new rules were: You must have at least 3 TEs in the game at all times, and all of your eligible receivers must be within 1 yard of each other when the ball is snapped.
I'm done
I can’t watch this anymore. If they go no huddle, they will win, but they don’t. That’s the definition of insanity
Arians Has No Game Plan
He has one drive in the last 5 quarters. We have to wait for a 80 yard bomb to Nate for a score
When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
what's the point of a OC if we can only succeed in no huddle?
arians is a waste of money and apparel
Yeah, DA is done

goddamnit
bring it all the way back. thought we were going to have some good position.
holmes needs to go forward, stop dancing
LOL
Im watching this game on a live TV stream and i can hear a RAGING FIGHT between whoever’s house this is streaming from.
“I DONT OWE YOU ANY FUCKING MONEY” is the last i heard. hahah. at least i get that as entertainment, god knows our offense isnt doing it for me.
that was interference

Why is Ben
always throwing the ball so late? He should have thrown that 2 seconds before he did
he overthrew nate last week like he's supposed to.
but yes he does throw it under more often than not.
How about a run?

when you don’t you get what you see tonight on offense.

its so nice to see ward actually do something
who would've thought
a quick pass to a crossing route would beat a blitz??
Where's Heath?

The the Giants would give us jacobs?
I want a power running game
Three pump fakes...
to sell the triple moves the receivers are running
He was checking down to Moore in earlier games
I think he had someone open down the middle, but Washington got a LB in the way
Why Not...
Let the o-line, which has done solidly tonight, do its job on 3rd and 2 and pound the rock up the gut?
Oh yeah, it’s Arians. 3rd and 2 = 4th and 26.
hey blitz - boys
Just got home, painful to miss the whole first half – caught a little bit on the radio.
ha, my friend just wrote this to me on gmail
John: scoring a field goal is like getting your cousin to agree to be your prom date
sure, you’ve now got something to show, but its pretty worthless
Me in response: for the steelers its like having a menage a trois with supermodels
LOL
Just commented on that – that is highlight worthy

of bad passes
he is not throwing the ball well

Coaching, right?
Isn’t this obvious to most fans? I haven’t seen a Steelers offense and special team this poorly coached since Noll’s last seasons. It is hard to watch such on the field talent eeking out wins, all heart you know, with such poor structure and direction coming from the side lines. I’ve been watching the Steelers since the eary 70s and I’m beginning to worry for a multi-season problem. Bad key player is one thing. Bad coaching? Man. The Bears have it worse – bad owner and coaching. Maybe things could be worse.
unreal...throw it away
had tons of time..throw it back of endzone..if no other reason than risks fumble there. criminy
Exactly, at least his second bad decision of the day
the other being his not throwing to Moore on 3rd and 2
you didn't read the pg
article about how great he is and how we never throw the ball to him

arians and ben
think that if you don’t gain at least 10 yards a play its a failure
etty damn clear
we aint getting any style points all year on offense
by Michael Bean on Nov 3, 2008 10:06 PM EST up reply actions
Arians sucks.
We could be going 6 yards per carry and he’d have them run some dumbass reverse on 3rd and 3.

I'd say just score on the next play, but...
This offense is so out of rhythm right now, Id almost be ok with just challenging it.
Arians for Pres!!!
that way he can’t fuck up our offense anymore
here we go steel nation. 10-5 at the half
