Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Washington Redskins - Open Thread

Ok Steelers fans. Two hours away until we see how we'll respond to our late collapse against the New York Giants last Sunday. A win here against a very competitive Washington team would have to make us feel good about our team, even if the offense once again plays inconsistently. It will take solid play, at least for part of the game, in all three areas of the game for us to escape FedEx Field with a win.

My keys:

1) Find a way to get Willie Parker involved while still utilizing what Mewelde Moore brings to the table.

2) As always, keep Big Ben upright. If that means incorporating quick hitting pass plays and unexpected running plays, let's hope Arians has designed some new looks.

3) Survive in the secondary without Bryant McFadden and possibly Ryan Clark, depending on his shoulder.

4) Limit the Redskins' big plays on special teams, as well as execute with our new long snapper.

5) Convert in the red zone, as well as force the Skins to settle for 3 when they breach our red zone.

I'll be here all game. Join me in cheering on the Steelers as they traverse into the largest and one of the loudest fields in the league.

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!!!!

fast start

need a fast start tonight..dont want to get behind 7 or 10 quickly, then us resort to throwing too often, which would let them start the mad rush towards Ben

B Mc Fad

Great point on McFadden…I’m wondering why more people aren’t bringing him up. He hired Rosenhaus this off-season for a reason. He looked fantastic in replacing Townsend, and honestly, my wish was he played like that without Rosenhaus as his agent. He’s gonna ask for Clements-like money, and there’s no chance the Steelers are going to give him that.

by Neal Coolong on Nov 3, 2008 6:50 PM EST reply actions

probably right

this injury to him wont help his market value perhaps though. i dunno, i think it depends what we decide to do with marvel smith partly. if we let him go, perhaps there’s enough money to re-sign b-mac. but i think i agree. i think he’ll follow the $$$

by Michael Bean on Nov 3, 2008 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

I'm hopeful

I feel like the steelers might be able to get him on a short term contract. B-Mac knows that he’ll be starting next year with us and that based on the defense we’ve got he’ll have an opportunity to make a lot of good stats. His value is down because he hasn’t started a season and he’s been injured this year. If he takes a 3 year deal to stay for a little less then market he could line himself up for one big contract when he’s out of that based on the thought he’ll have a better chance to prove himself here then some place like Oakland.

off to the bar

Will miss ya’ll during the game as I’m off to the bar straight after work. Normally I like to be obsessive and loud in my living room, but cutting down on costs removed cable from my life, thus I’ll be out in public for this one. Hope it doesn’t get ugly.

My Keys: (for their minimal worth)
1. Make Jason Campbell beat us.
If we keep all big plays to a minimum and stack up their running game so that they’re facing 3rd and 5+ I like the steelers to win those matchups enough to win the game.
2. Don’t let our offense beat us.
While I get annoyed with BA’s play calling and his basic hand-cuffing of our offense, this year could be all about defense. We could reign big ben back to 2004 status of just making the easy reads and letting the defense win games and grind out what we can on offense. I love Ben’s ability to make the big play, but for the love all that’s holy that defense is ridiculously good. Let them win it. Just take the points where we can get them.

And with that, I believe we win it! I know football’s almost never that simple but I feel like it’s basically stop the run and don’t turn the ball over and we win this game.

by Chicago Steeler on Nov 3, 2008 6:58 PM EST reply actions

I can't wait for the game!!!

Bout to put on my Steelers gear, and head out to be swarmed by redskins fans. I really feel like this game is a must win for us! I see us heading into a downward spiral if we lose with the upcoming games!! Come on Black and Gold!!! Do This!!! NOW!!!

by Cdsumm on Nov 3, 2008 6:59 PM EST reply actions

think i may agree

Could get ugly moving forward if we again struggle to find any sort of identity on offense and maintain it for close to 4 quarters

NFL "Predictions"

Does anyone else get really annoyed with ESPN’s Fantasy predictions before games?

Roethlisberger 16-for-28 160 yards 1 TD 1 INT?!? Wwwwhhhaaaa?!? To quote Stanley from The Office, “Have you lost yo’ mind, cuz I help you FIIIIIND it!”

Ben did his Perfect Pushups this week, he’s gonna tear it up…

by Neal Coolong on Nov 3, 2008 7:09 PM EST reply actions

“If JEEEsus walked through that door right now, he wouldn’t be able to save you.” I’m liking the Stanley love.

On a related note, they had Gostowski kicking for 19 points, which is pretty ridiculous. I wonder if they just let a random number generator run for a while.

by PsycoSalameh on Nov 3, 2008 7:11 PM EST reply actions

i think the main thing we need to do on defense is

SHUT DOWN CLINTON PORTIS!!! did anyone see his numbers last week? they were like 21 carriers for 145 yards or something like that. everytime i watch this guy play, im just thinking to myself…Thank God i dont have to play defense on him, i mean he just runs all over the place.

The grass may be greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed

Portis

Five straight games with 120+ rushing yards…perhaps the best five-game streak this defense has been against since Lewis in 2003.

by Neal Coolong on Nov 3, 2008 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

ya but...

Portis is much more elusive than Lewis. lewis is more of a downhil-tip-toe-stepper-bulldozer. Portis is an elusive-physical-dominator.

The grass may be greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed

by PsycoSalameh on Nov 3, 2008 7:29 PM EST reply actions

True...

I’m just talking about the momentum he has going into this game, not about their respective styles.

Lewis had like 70 yards in the first quarter, and ate his ass the rest of the way. Too bad we were so bad that season, it was an epic Ravens-Steelers game.

Online telecasts, streams, etc?

I don’t have cable, and due to birth of my second son (just ONE day before Troys!) I will not be able to head 40 minutes out to the nearest pittsburgh bar.

I don’t think the nfl.com site will have the companion broadcast tonite, so only other place I’ve been able to find it is at:
http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast.php?matchid=22372&part=sports

which uses tv ants, better than nothing, but 141k is a little hard to watch sometimes.

Anyone know of a good stream for the game?

But I need them to win it tonight. I live in the District, and let’s just say I have not been quiet about how the Steelers were coming into this town to Tear. Shit. Up. tonight. If I have to go to work tomorrow with a loss to my credit… Well, it won’t be pretty.

So, shut down Portis, get FWP moving, keep Ben standing, whatever — LET’S JUST DO THIS!!!

I think

Holmes gets a long catch and run tonight off the blitz.

No.

Greg Williams was notorious for not blitzing very much even when the pass rush from the front four was not very effective. Blache has inherited this same mentality.

This could change tonight, but I wouldn’t expect a ton of blitz.

That “rule” didn’t work last year, so MNF had some crazy convoluted way of phrasing it this year to make it seem predictive.

by Aldo on Nov 3, 2008 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

The way they usually state is based on the incumbent party winning or losing based on the Redskins. MNF explained it this year by saying “the party that won the popular vote the last election” instead of incumbent. This explains 2004 because Gore won popular vote in 2000. Pretty shady if you ask me.

Coaching, right?

Isn’t this obvious to most fans? I haven’t seen a Steelers offense and special team this poorly coached since Noll’s last seasons. It is hard to watch such on the field talent eeking out wins, all heart you know, with such poor structure and direction coming from the side lines. I’ve been watching the Steelers since the eary 70s and I’m beginning to worry for a multi-season problem. Bad key player is one thing. Bad coaching? Man. The Bears have it worse – bad owner and coaching. Maybe things could be worse.

When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen

Sorry. It just frustrates me when we have a momentum-changer and we do something like that.

by Hines Ward on Nov 3, 2008 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

arians and ben

think that if you don’t gain at least 10 yards a play its a failure

by FireAriansNow on Nov 3, 2008 9:59 PM EST reply actions

etty damn clear

we aint getting any style points all year on offense

by Michael Bean on Nov 3, 2008 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

Arians sucks.

We could be going 6 yards per carry and he’d have them run some dumbass reverse on 3rd and 3.

Quote of the Year

As the Steelers begin their mid-season crippling slide, I think this quote describes this team the best.

Holding...

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on Nov 3, 2008 10:01 PM EST reply actions

I like Ben throwing a decisive pass

by Alba on Nov 3, 2008 10:03 PM EST reply actions

by Michael Bean on Nov 3, 2008 10:03 PM EST reply actions

Blitz knows I am kidding

Limas’ ass is doing a very good job of keep the bench the right temp. woulnd’t want to mess with his responsibility

by SteelerBuddha on Nov 3, 2008 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

I'd say just score on the next play, but...

This offense is so out of rhythm right now, Id almost be ok with just challenging it.

by Neal Coolong on Nov 3, 2008 10:04 PM EST reply actions

uh oh

Can we all vow not to talk politics at half time?

by TURFgeek on Nov 3, 2008 10:04 PM EST reply actions

They’ve been hyping the candidate interviews for weeks!

But I agree with you…

There we go! Ben for President!

Ben's a drama queen

The more he thinks he’s hurt, the better he does in the second half.

by Neal Coolong on Nov 3, 2008 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

good first half

— looking forward to the defense going to town on these guys

by BoiseSteeler on Nov 3, 2008 10:09 PM EST reply actions

Offense is great. Coaching is terrible.

Most linemenn in NFL are capable of being good. Just need the game set around them.

by Lemke on Nov 3, 2008 10:09 PM EST reply actions

Can I vote for Perot?

by Ragnar808 on Nov 3, 2008 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

lol

NEW THREAD. Hopefully the transition will delay some of the politics talk! :)

by Michael Bean on Nov 3, 2008 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

Chris Berman is bringing the heat with these questions.
