Steelers 33 Patriots 10 Postgame Thread

Boy that felt good! Use this thread to discuss who is the best defensive player in the NFL. James Harrison? Troy P? How about the way the coaches used Parker, Moore, and Russell? This is a completely different offensive system than what we were running at the beginning of the year.

Let's hear your thoughts Steeler Nation

Is it me or is our offensive line really good now? I mean ok maybe not really good…but good? Not awful. Not sh*** not garbage. Its pretty cool how we held up against a very good line and decent linebackers. sure they were injured……but we held up against possibly the top 3 front line.

Good job holding up, more importantly, good job without the penalties…no chargers redux game here and especially good job with roethlisberger. I know he threw an interception but I’m not holding that against him…he did really well.

We ran a lot at the end and didnt do much in the conversions at the end zone. But honestly….those were vanilla safe plays to ensure we dont throw away the game. Basically we ran a lot and didn’t pass as much and let the defense do its job. I’m fine with that.

hmm

i don’t think the line is really any better, i think the offensive strategy has been altered to mask the weaknesses of the O-line

I’m holding the INT against him, but I’m also keeping the rest of the game in mind.

I heard we are still trying to trade Ben for Derek Anderson and a third round pick. At least that is what Beerman told me.

by frankrmineo on Nov 30, 2008 7:41 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

man, it is crazy

the amount of drops this team has had over the last few weeks. Those drops not withstanding, this team played very well today considering the conditions. That Int wasn’t so much a poorly thrown ball as it was a great defensive play. James H all the way for DPOY. No doubt in my mind. O lines have to resort to holding just to try to keep this guy in check. He is a BEAST.

Man, how funny was Timmons running out of gas? A little out of shape bro? Holy Hell that win felt great!

speaking of holding...

I liked seeing tomlin yelling at the refs about missing a holding call – I wish they would have shown what brought that on…

So whaddya think?

Do we get a steady dose of “Brady wasn’t playing!” or “Ryan Clark is the dirtiest player ever in the history of sports, or "the refs screwed us” from Patriots fans?

by ncoolong on Nov 30, 2008 8:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not from me

My Pats made too many errors and the Stillers were there to take advantage of them. Ben showed up today and we had no answer. Harrison’s a beast, plain and simple.

with the exception of that dumb INT I'd say Ben had a solid game

Not an attempt to be a “negative Ned” or anything but that INT was just plain dumb.

I wouldn’t say the refs can be blamed seeing as how the Steelers had more penalties as well as penalty yards.

But you’re right MaPatsFan, the Pats just made too many errors and the Steelers capitilized. The Pats were actually lucky that those FGs weren’t turned into TDs instead.

They should remake King Kong starring James Harrison, he’d rip a T-Rex apart.

Clark’s hit was a thing of beauty. Honestly, I don’t think clark meant to hit him after the play was clearly over. Had the ball not been tipped it would have been right there and a perfect play. As it was clark was late, easy call by the refs.

We needed to shake wes up. The hit didn’t look helmet to helmet to me, just a solid pounder. Good play by clark, bad luck by wes. That’s what happens when you’re the #1 target. It’s not only the QB that has a bullseye on you. See: Santonio.

FUCK YEAH!!!

My apologies if the title is inappropriate but that was a game of halves. The 2nd half was alot of fun to watch. Timmons is a bad man! Our whole LB core is just plain crazy and our secondary is getting so much better. Welker got dealt a HUGE blow that was freaking AWESOME, Timmons crushes Cassle and the O-line and Ben only gave up 1, yes folks against a decent front 4, only 1 sack. Could it really happen? Could our line finally gel? We all know if the Offense can play solid football there really isn’t another team with the exception of maybe the Giants that can stop us. Felt GREAT to get back to Steeler football. I said it in a different post, but this team plays better on the road. 4 games to go but damn good start to this stretch. Bring on the Cowgirls!

New Team Record

If my calculations are correct. Harrison and Woodley set a new team record today. They have now combined for 25.5 sacks eclipsing the record of 24 set by Greene and Loyd as well as Porter and Gildon. Also, Harrison is one sack away from tieing the team record of 15 sacks held by Mike Merriwether.

Does anyone know what the NFL record is

for combined sacks by teamates? Isnt it held by chris doleman of vikings and someone else on Vikings?

Evolution

That’s the word for this team.

The team has gone through injuries to so many players causing a constant flux of change on the team. Plus the O line has had to get up to speed on the fly. It’s only natural that there were growing pains along the road. But FWP seems to be coming back inch by inch…yard by yard. MM and FWP are now really getting the Steelers back to a run first team. That’s getting the passing game open and is just going to screw all opponents if they continue to progress.

The D? They’re flat out awesome.

The Steelers can finish very strong, get the bye week, and crush everyone in their way.

Yes it’s true!

This team is finding it’s way….and the thing is that they weren’t bad before….they were just very good….now they can become great…..IF they continue to evolve.

Ike's hands

Add them to Carson’s elbow and Marvel’s back as the least reliable body parts in the AFC North.

Ike would be freakin’ All Pro if he could catch the ball…the funny part is he was an offensive player at La.-Lafayette before switching to defense his senior year.

Looked Clean

to me. It looked like Clark led and hit with his shoulder and was playing toward the ball. He smashed him for sure but it didn’t look helmet to helmet…at least to me.

by Silverback92 on Nov 30, 2008 11:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

at first

I thought it was a legal hit as far as helmet to helmet and stuff goes, I figured it was a penalty because the ball was kinda out of the way and Clark didn’t need to hit him.

However, looking at that replay I see what happened. It was a legal hit, no doubt about it. He led with his shoulder. But the most important thing I noticed was that as soon as Clark comes into the screen on one of those shots his head is already turned and he running straight at welker shoulder lowered. In other words the last glimpse he got of welker made him think welker could still catch the tip (and had welker not givin up on the play he may have been able to). It wasn’t a dirty hit at all.

by shleeve on Nov 30, 2008 11:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thats exactly it!

Just like in jacksonville game. Clark had know way of knowing it wasn’t catchable. He was just trying to play hard THROUGH the whistle! How do you penalize, let alone fine and penalize a guy, for doing his job! RIDICULOUS!

by Jonny B. on Nov 30, 2008 11:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Remember when anthony smith hit that guy after the fair catch? It’s a players responsibility to pay attention to the whole play – ignorance is not an excuse in the NFL.

you get a free hit, but I don’t think it was Clarks intention to be dirty there.

Penalty

It wasn’t a penalty because of helmet to helmet contact. It is a personal foul to leave your feet, or launch, to hit a defenseless receiver.

by Jonny B. on Dec 1, 2008 12:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wanna know how you define "defenseless receiver"

I’m not attacking you personally Carl, but rather I wanna know the NFL rule.
Welker wasn’t in the air. He didn’t have his back turned. He wasn’t limping around or anything.
Clark hit a receiver who had both feet on the ground and was jogging down the field. I really don’t think he was defenseless at all. If he was than so was Holmes when that Cincy player leveled him.

by shleeve on Dec 1, 2008 12:22 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

I don’t think Welker was defenseless but, to my knowledge, there is no definition of “defenseless” in the rulebook. My guess is the rule is vague on purpose to give refs leeway and so the NFL can pull the “judgement” card to defend these calls.

To me, it seems like the receiver would have to be in the air to be defenseless. I guy running straight ahead is not defenseless. I just think this is the only way the call is even remotely plausible since it was clearly not helmet to helmet or a late hit.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Dec 1, 2008 1:22 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wes welker is always defenseless, he’s tiny. And clark just showed the NFL how to win against the pats.

by steelguy99 on Dec 1, 2008 9:07 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, after rewatching it is definitely a jump tackle. The fine is coming – good call mustache.

by steelguy99 on Dec 1, 2008 9:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Pizz on Welker

I really like Welker’s ability, he’s a great ball player and I want to see him back next week. HOWEVER, when the refs didn’t call that helmet-to-helmet hit on the Pat DB for spearing Heath Miller, then we should get to headhunt too.

I’m glad Heath was okay and that the Pat DB got shook up on it. But he blatantly led with his helmet and should’ve been called on it. Just make it fair, ref.

Clark, I might add, clearly hit with his shoulder. Viciously. And a little too far from the action. It was definately worth the flag according to this year’s standards.

by betelgeuse on Nov 30, 2008 9:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It was a solid hit

I’m bummed Welker got knocked out of play, but I don’t think it would’ve mattered much. If I’m not mistaken, it wasn’t the helmet-to-helmet thing that was the issue (I didn’t really see that kind of contact, either). I think it’s the fact that Clark’s feet left the ground, considered “launching” into the other player. The rules interpret that as excessive.

by MaPatsFan on Nov 30, 2008 9:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well

they called it because the ball was “too far” away from the action. I didn’t think it was all that far away and the ball was clearly still in the air but I’m not gonna say it was a bad call. It was unnecessary but at the same time for all Clark knew Wes may have been able to snatch it off the tip. I think it was a no call if it wasn’t for the hard hit (a “normal” hit would have went unflagged).

In the Jacksonville game

The ball was also tipped on the play where Clark got fined.

Just an

observation. But, how about Colon. has he finallly grown up? I just remember seeing gaping holes open up through him. And just in the nick of time.

I don’t care what any of you say, Ben is still trippin a little bit. But, I think for the first tme this season he has elected to just throw the ball away when there really was’nt any opportunity to make a play. How about that!

The D is simply scary. And now Timmons wasnt some of that glory. Ans should. Ike, I agree needs to slap the ball down. And this should be advised by his coaches cause he can’t catch. Plain and simple.

by C-Mac on Nov 30, 2008 9:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i think the problem with Ike is...

That he doesn’t use his body or arms to try and catch it. He only ever uses his hands, which we all know suck. If he did the Hines Ward thing and tried to jump and catch it in his belly then he might actually hold onto one.

by shleeve on Nov 30, 2008 11:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Players are taught to catch it with their hands and not their belly though for a reason.

I think Ike needs to just bat it.

great win

that win felt good. we dominated on both sides of the ball. big hits, timely defense, and a good gampelan with good execution. that’s a recipe for success.

harrison = dpoy. there really can’t be any debate here. he’s the most dominant player on the most dominant defense. 80 tackles, 14 sacks, 6 ff, 1 int – and we still have 4 games left.

polamalu – i don’t think there’s any doubt/debate that the best safety in the game is back and healthy. our defense is 100% different when he’s not in there. whether its playing the deep ball, rushing the qb, shadowing a rb, or flying over the offensive line with reckless abandon, troy is the backbone of our d, and the best, hands down at what he does.

parker – has noticeably lost a step, but still looked good tonight. if he can stay healthy, we can ride parker, moore, russell well into the postseason.

ben – played well, for the second game in a row. one bad pass that was picked by vrabel (which did lead to 7 points) but that will happen. every qb throws bad passes from time to time. i think he looked much better, and he definitely is playing with a lot more confidence, which is the most important attribute for a qb to have.

overall, i liked it. lets get keisel and bmac back to make the best, most dominant defense even more devestating. great win for the nation.

Not trying to be negative

but Ben had a few bad passes in the first half. Most of them were tipped or whatnot. Now, the second half he was solid.

He’s still not 100% though. If his shoulder was healthy he would have hit Nate in stride on that long bomb that ended up be an incomplete pass.

Do What You Need To Do

Couldn’t of been sweeter than to see how the game went.. After the initial fumble, penality, and INT, they went about doing what then needed to do.

It is nice to slam on peetriot fans at a bar with a ton of Steelelr fans going wild.. After all of the painful NE losses over the recent past, it was special to see the losers take it, in their house..

The O-Line is doing yeoman duty and not making major mistakes over the past few weeks.. Important aspect..

Ben looks to be a bit less relaxed than he has in the past, but has changed (through coaching?) his approach on his passes.. His release is not high for a tall qb, which allows the defenders to get at the ball, and his passes did not seem to have a clean zip to them. But, and a big but, he made the ones he needed to make….

Time of possession was great with sustained drives, which will win games..

Saw some great play across the board, although there were ropped passes by O and D.. Need to tighten up for the stretch..
.
Defense = oh my… It has to scare the opposition..

Need to stay healthy and peak down the road..

For ex-Burgh peeps in SoCal..

My thoughtages

First off, this was so far my favorite win of the year. I am a happy little clam. I hate the pats and they stank.

I love that Vic carucci admitted he was wrong in anointing Cassel and the New York Jets. So good to hear these damn bandwagon riders admitting their error.

Anyway, the dropage was to be expected. Hines held on to his, and Heath did well. But Holmes and Nate do get their drops and in the rain I saw that coming. Still, no excuses. Ike Taylor has hands made of lead so lets just be happy moss didnt catch his tip.

I called a score of 27-13, and everyone said “no way we hold em to 13” and yet we beat both of my expectations on both sides of the ball. Very impressive.

I dont care if we are “masking” our O-line or not. They played great. 1 sack is great against a very good team.

Our Defense. Dear god, if Ben doesnt throw picks all postseason we get a 6th ring. This defense is something ungodly. Troy leads the league in picks, Harrison is right there with sacks, Woodley is a close second, and everyone makes amazing plays.

Basically, we exposed this team on their turf. We’ve had some great road wins this year. Lets keep it up.

by Mechem on Nov 30, 2008 10:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Agree

If masking the o line means one sack, then I am all for masking that weakness. Besides, I’m not so sure they masked anything. I know Ben didn’t have any completed bombs, but did you see the time he had to find receivers? Just because he makes a ten yard completion doesn’t mean the line isn’t giving him 4-5 seconds to find a receiver.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Nov 30, 2008 11:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It's called coaching.

Let’s give credit where credit is due. Bruce still must go, but they have done a decent job of masking the o-lines shortcoming, which includes the 3 step drops, designed roll outs, and mixing in the run for a change. Our o+line is still a work in priogress, but at least its progressing,

by Jonny B. on Dec 1, 2008 12:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Lots of over-reactin' goin' on here...

It’s one game. I loved every second of it, but it is only one game. My thoughts:

1) Ben throws the WORST deep ball in the NFL. Randle El is more accurate on passes over 30 yds than Ben is.
2) The OL looked terrific. Plenty of running room, plenty of time to throw, can’t ask for much more from such an untalented group.
3) Ryan Clark had the hit of the year. Definitely worth the flag and fine from the kinder, gentler NFL. The commish wants the league to get in touch with its feminine side? Well then hits like this are about to go the way of the dinosaur. Enjoy them while you can.
4) James Harrison is the DPOY. Don’t tell me “Albert Haynesworth.” Teams are moving the ball on the Titans D now. The Steelers D is tops in the league, and Harrison has had the biggest impact on the D this year, by far. If he finishes strong and doesn’t win it something is wrong.
5) FWP looked spry and healthy. He didn’t look tentative at all. His cuts were sharp, but he did look like he was missing a little off the top end.
6) Week 17 is going to be a joke. No DA? No Brady Queen? Man, it’s getting harder and harder to hate the Browns.

by JHolmes on Nov 30, 2008 11:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

few comments

1) As of now his deep ball isn’t all that great but I still think his shoulder is bum.
2) Yea, they deserve some credit. 1 sack over the past 3 games I believe.
3) Agreed. I’ll take that hit for 15 yards. Don’t want to seriously hurt a guy but the best way to send a message is to hit them hard.
4) I still can’t decide between him and Troy, but its got to be one of the two.
5) He defiantly didn’t look himself on that one long run he broke. If he was 100% than he would have been gone.
6) What happened to DA? I missed that.

by shleeve on Nov 30, 2008 11:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

1) Ben’s deep ball has always been off. I’ve seen him make 4 or 5 throws over 30 yds that I would call “on the money.” Great NFL QBs make those throws 75% of the time when they’re there.
2) Light years from week 3. Blitz pickup is 1000x better.
3) You don’t want to end a career, but if a clean hit ends in a concussion or a broken bone then in my opinion the defender did what he gets paid to do. A year ago they would be showing highlights of that hit on ESPN for a week. Now it draws a flag. I hate Goodell. He is ruining the game.
4) 92 has had a bigger impact. We don’t beat BAL in week 4 without his strip-sack-TD, and we don’t beat SD without his strip-sack-safety. Troy is amazing (2 of the greatest INTs ever this year), but he hasn’t single-handedly won games the way Silverback has. No contest.
5) Agreed. I think this will be a non-factor by January, barring a setback.
6) DA has a sprained knee, possibly out for the season. Even with him, the Browns are nothing more than a punchline.

Ben deep ball

It’s got to be his shoulder, because he used to be fine at hitting the deep ball. In fact it seemed like that was all we did last year.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Dec 1, 2008 3:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ben's deep ball improving?

That throw was only a couple of yards short instead of five+ yards short like he has done the previous few games.

by Steelin on Dec 1, 2008 1:24 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Close doesn't count

He thinks his arm is stronger than it really is. He waits until he would have to get 70+ yds under the ball for it to be caught in stride before he releases it. If he would let it go as soon as he knows it’s there we wouldn’t have a problem.

That ball was underthrown by at least 10 yds. Nate had to stop completely to attempt to catch it. It needed 10-15 more yds under it to lead him correctly.

Ben’s deep ball will always be piss poor. His throwing will not improve from where he is at this stage of his career. Ryan and Flacco both throw better deep balls, and it’s not close. Doesn’t make them better QBs, just better at that aspect of the game.

by JHolmes on Dec 1, 2008 1:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't agree with this statement

Ben’s deep ball will always be piss poor. His throwing will not improve from where he is at this stage of his career.

I’ve seen Big Boy drop plenty of on-target bombs. You just can’t remember past week one and mario williams crushing his shoulder.

Harrison is a beast, no question

We didn’t have an answer for him in a game (at least it was a game in the first half, lol) that we gave away in the second half, literally. Hopefully Moss, Gaffney, and Watson will be spending quality time with the jugs machine this week, and Slater will be out fielding kicks. Hey, credit goes out to your guys for taking advantage of our give-aways, gaining momentum, and taking control of the game.

Keep the faith!

HEY BELICHICK HOW'S THAT TASTE?!?!?!

Man, it felt goooood to finally kick his ass! The only thing that would have made it better would have been if Brady were there to take those sacks.“Paging Mr. Romo, Mr. Tony Romo—-your humiliation is waiting to meet you in Pittsburgh”

Let's Go!

Talk about Speed...

did any1 see benjamon watson chase down timmons? honestly, i think watson is faster than the idiot called randy moss. didnt he chase down champ baily in that denver game, the int went for 99 yards and watson caught up to get baily out at the 1. i mean wow!!! i hate the patriots with all my guts but he is fast!

The grass may be greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed

Fast???

Timmons slowed to a crawl after he ran out of gas, plus he was in! Tomlin should’ve challenged.

His knee looked down to me. Besides, it was a good opportunity to run time off of the clock.

His knee went down and the ball was just inches from the goalline. I thought at first he was in too, but after I saw the replay they got the call on the field correct.
