Ask BigBlueShoe: Week Ten

Hello there, Steelers fans. Hope you are sobering up from your election night festivities. Whether your candidates won or lost, I trust there was some drinking involved. I suggest Emergen-C.

But enough on politics. Back to important stuff, like FOOTBALL! My Colts travel to your city to take on your Steelers. The Colts, throughout their entire history, have never won in Pittsburgh. Ever. Needless to say, this is an important game.

I'm happy to answer your questions about the Colts and our upcoming game as best I can. Injuries? Offensive sets? Game-planning? Who is starting on defense? Ask away.

Haha, Emergen-C. That stuff is magic. One question I have (since I haven’t followed other teams as much as usual this year unfortunately) is the fans’ thoughts on Peyton going forward. Since he’s my fantasy QB, I’ve noticed that he had that great Ravens game but then just flopped the next week. Do you see him returning to old form for the rest of the year?

I think you will see more contest play from Peyton. He is healthy. His o-line is healthy. His RBs are healthy.

I have a two part question

Part 1: We’re probably starting a backup LT that “struggles against speed rushers.” Meanwhile, I can see Dwight Freeney has been having a pretty lousy year statistically. Would you say his play has been poor, or has this come largely because of the poor run defense and less than stellar offense?

Part 2: On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited would you be if Byron Leftwich started this game?

Answers

1) If you are starting a backup LT with troubles against speed rushers, Freeney will kill your QBs. Freeney’s play has been very good. Stats do not tell the story. Teams employ more three step drops andh ave run the ball more, minimizing long yardage passing situations. The best defense against Freeney (and Mathis) is to employ a 2 TE set, like New England did last week. The drawback with that is those TEs must stay in to block, limiting the big play element. NE only scored 15 points last Sunday.

2) About 3. Leftwich stinks. Roethlisberger has developed into a fine QB, and as a football fan I’d much rather see him. Indy has a long track record of kicking Fatty’s butt. Roethlisberger? Not so much.

I think the question is how excited would YOU be to see Lefty. I’ll extrapolate and assume that a 3 for us means a 7 for the colts?

Answer

I guess not very. I’d prefer to see Roethlisberger.

Freeney

I read somewhere that it looks like Freeney has been relying too much on his spin move this season and that has led to some of his drop off in production. Is there any truth to that?

by cgolden on Nov 5, 2008 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

Answer

Where did you read that? I don’t see anything like that at all. Freeney’s sack numbers dropoff has more to do with the fact that teams are playing “milk the clock” against Indy.

Freeney's spin doesn't work if he gets doubled by a tackle and guard

He beats the tackle then the guard mauls him before he’s back on balance after the spin, but a DE occupying two OL linemen is a win for the defense.

Speaking for myself....

I would love to see Byron start this game. Not only would I like to see him start, I would like to see him continue where he left off with the foreskins, cough, sorry, redskins. I mean being realistic, the offensive play when he stepped in for Ben looked like a whole different team. To me, it was without question the best the offense has looked all year. Obviously Ben is still the starter. He just isn’t firing on all cylinders right now. Get him out of there. Let him rest up, get heathy, and get back to playing Ben caliber football. It would be an incredible boost to our team if we could win against a capable Colts team with Lefty in there! Ben can come back full force in a couple weeks and we will know in the back of our minds that we have an extremely competent back-up QB! I am also starting to wonder if our O line is as bad as I once thought? I know they aren’t great, but I think Lefty was only sacked once. Has Ben holding on to the ball played a much bigger roll in his getting trounced thus far than I initially thought? I mean realistically, the O line CAN’T hold people forever! Any thoughts?

by Cdsumm on Nov 5, 2008 1:02 PM EST reply actions

The OL is definitely getting better, and the Giants game was almost all on Ben, if you ask me. He’s never been great at getting the ball out, but he’s locking onto receievers that never get open and pumping the ball 2-3 times every dropback. I wasn’t surprised to see the pressure settle down when Byron came in.

We talked about this in another thread, but Leftwich’s long delivery is better against man defenses like the ‘skins because the CB’s have their backs to the QB. It will be tougher against a good zone secondary like the Colts, but he has played pretty well against them, despite what you’ll hear from their site. Here are his numbers in 6 games against the Colts:

2-4 record, 100-155, 64.5%, 1134y, 7.31ypa, 6 tds, 3 ints, 91.2 rating, 11 sacks, 4 fumbles, 0 lost.

For a running team with a good defense, I’d hardly blame him for the record with that stat line. He did play pretty poorly in his last 2 games against them (47.8 and 76.5 ratings), though.

I think if the defense has a good game plan and we can run the ball at all, Leftwich will manage the game well enough for us to win.

I’m amazed that of four fumbles 0 were lost. I doubt that will happen with the steelers with ‘Max "hides from the free ball like it’s a stick of dynamite" Starks’.

did you see the colts-patriots game?

the Pats* ran on the colts at will, with their third and fourth string RBs. If we don’t run and run and run again against the Colts, I’ll jump on the ‘fire BA yesterday’ band-wagon…

by acrollet on Nov 5, 2008 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

4.4 YPC isn't even that bad compared to some of the Colts run Ds

it’s even better than they were doing early on. The Colts also kept Bob Sanders out of the box to help the CB (who had been resigned by the team 3 days before the game) on Randy Moss. They should have more CBs healthy and they won’t have to respect the deep ball as much with Holmes than with Moss.

Even when they bring 8 in the box the Colts still sell out to stop the deep pass

When Sanders goes into the box they play cover 3 and give massive cushions. You can throw on that formation well, but not deep.

Arians

Im not going to go into a Anti BA spiel here but I just want to remind you t hat Arians dosnt always do what he should or what is expected. IE Denver last year 31st ranked rushing defense and we didn’t run the ball hardly at all. Result- LOSS

Hope this dosnt occur again….

Is that Peyton Manning or Archie Manning behind center?

The “best QB in the NFL” looks to be a shadow of his former self this season. Can Peyton come back to something resembling his prime?

Not gloating, since the Steelers are going through the same with Ben Roethlisberger who is about 10 years younger at the moment.

by robert ethan on Nov 5, 2008 3:44 PM EST reply actions

Peyton looked pretty good last week

he’s faced a brutal schedule of pass Ds with a shaky line.

P.S. Peyton is a little less than 6 years older

If Brett Favre has a few more rough outings..

People are going to say he is getting too old to play the position.

They’ll say “Geez, Favre is starting to look like Peyton Manning out there” :).

Or Ben Roethlisberger…:(

QBs

I’d take Ben Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning over any of the top 5 passers, statistically, in the league right now. All the real star players in the NFL have struggled this season because of injury.

Defensive problems?

I guess my question is whether the problem with the colts defense has been the same old suspect all year? (ie the running game) Or is there more there with injuries and such. I know bob got injured, lord knows that poor guy can’t stay intact long enough.

by Chicago Steeler on Nov 5, 2008 4:51 PM EST reply actions

They lost the anchor to the run D and his backup

Ed Johnson (who was on zero tolerance after off the field issues in college) smoked his way out, and the Colts other big DT Quinn Pitcock retired after one season while driving to training camp. They are starting DTs that weigh 265 and 254. That puts a ton of pressure on the LBs and SS to stop the run. When the LBs play well they can stop the run (held the 3 opponents before NE under 3.5 YPC). When the LBs don’t play well and when they can’t bring safety help they struggle with the run.

McCargo

There was also the distraction of the busted John McCargo trade. The team was really excited about getting him, an impact DT. Then, he failed his physical, and is rotting still in Buffalo.

Too bad about McCargo. As a fellow Wolfpacker, I was hoping to see him get back to form. Looks like he’s been injured most of his career, though.

Big Blue: About the receiving matchups

Do you see the Polamalu-Clark matchup as one of the biggest keys? Do you think you have more good receivers than we can cover? Is Marvin Harrison now your third best guy with a lost step? How do you see that whole Colts’ receiving corp vs. Steelers defenders matchup? Thank you.

by maryrose on Nov 5, 2008 5:11 PM EST reply actions

Answer

Yes, and good observation. Polamalu may have to shadow Clark, and that is a great matchup. Yes, I think the Colts have the best WR corps in football, talent-wise. However, for whatever reason they haven’t played consistently. Marvin Harrison has not lost a step. Everyone keeps saying that, but after watching him on tape he is still fast as hell. I think he and Manning are still working on timing. I think the advantage is Colrs against Steelers secondary, but the key is how the Colts o-line holds up against the Steelers pass rush.

I saw an analyst on ESPN showing film of Payton Manning not being able to run “play action” as effectivley this season due to his lack of mobility. Is this something that you have noticed, and if so is it still bothering him at this point in the season?

Also, could it also be that with the running game somewhat stalled this year that nobody takes a play action seriously?

by frankrmineo on Nov 6, 2008 10:12 AM EST reply actions

I think it's the lack of a run game

They didn’t run the Colts signature run play, the stretch, for the first two weeks because it’s hard on Peyton physically (he has to get the snap and sprint to where the handoff will be), but they’ve taken that limitation off him almost two months ago. The only possible issue is him missing on more deep balls than usual and I’d attribute that to the OL just starting to get a consistent starting caliber lineup set.

Hamstring is still bothering him. He is maybe running at 80-85 %.

Isn’t a running back at 80-85% pretty much useless in the NFL?

by frankrmineo on Nov 6, 2008 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Addai was under 2 YPC against the Pats

but they haven’t been running well all year. The team YPC is around 3.4 The OL is getting better, but they are a much better pass blocking line than run blocking right now (or Peyton is much better at hiding their mistakes than either Colts RB).
