Re-Sign Deebo or TAG HIM?

Well, I was going to post something arguing if Deebo is a legit MVP, cos for me he is already the DPOY! HE IS A BEAST!

But, anyway, he is contract is expiring and he will be 31 next year so, what we should do? Put a tag or get a new contract?

I would love to have him for 3-4 years, and he deserves a big contract, he is becoming the heart of this defense with Poz, and Farrior, so WE NEED HIM! WE NEED HIM TO BE SB CONTENDERS FOR THE NEXT 2 years! I dont think he will be worse in 3 years, he doesnt have too many hits on their belt and is a freak!

Any thoughts!?

The FO will definitely try and get a deal done. If Harrison is reasonable we’ll sign him to a good deal. As per the status quo, we won’t pay him huge money. If he wants it elsewhere, he can get it. He’s not the Farrior of this defense and isn’t guaranteed to end his days here, but maybe the FO will sign him a contract that gives him some nice money up front.

Would hate to see him leave, especially after it took him so long to make it into our starting lineup. That’s the way it goes though, this defense is bigger than any one man, and the only guys that stick around are the guys that recognize that. I have no insight as to if Harrison knows this or not.

McFadden does not, and he can kiss off after this season for all I care.

sign him

3 years with options for a 4th & 5th year. Performance escalators combined with a healthy amount of guaranteed funds.

The franchise tag is absolute shit.

by Fahey on Dec 1, 2008 7:12 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

man

HAVE to resign him.

Look what he’s done for Woodley too! LaMarr’s gotta bust his ass to keep up with Harrison.

Harrison’s just about the gnarliest baddest dude in the league. Agree Brazil, we have a 2 year window at least where we can just be unreal on defense. But a big part of that is having him in the mix.

by Blitzburgh on Dec 1, 2008 7:54 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Resign absolutely

Basically it comes down to two people:

B-mac, and Deebo.

B-mac to me is higher priority because we dont have near as much depth at the position.

However at the same time, Deebo may be willing to negotiate a very good deal since he is getting up in years. Although I’m convinced he has another 2-3 years of play at this level.

Remember we get a lot of free space after Maxamillion Starks gets his deal re-done or let go of, likely the latter. Releasing Kendall Simmons might be useful to our money also as the Stapler has done a good job in his place.

by Mechem on Dec 1, 2008 7:59 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No one is worth an unlimited amount, even Deebo.

McFadden is dead to me after this recent crap. I could care less if we resign him.

What recent crap

Did I miss something? Or are you just upset over the injury.

by Mechem on Dec 1, 2008 8:50 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it's because

He isnt playing because he is unhappy with his contract status or something. no?

by Jonny B. on Dec 1, 2008 8:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I never heard this

All I know is they’ve been taking their time with his broken arm. I’ve never heard a lick of this before.

by Mechem on Dec 1, 2008 9:05 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

McFadden is letting his FA status at the end of the year weigh a little too heavily on whether he is healthy enough to play. It doesn’t hurt that his agent is the worlds biggest moneygrubber.

I hope mcfadden is gone at the end of the year.

by steelguy99 on Dec 1, 2008 9:07 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i can see that being true, but unless you’ve actually read something that states that, or even implies that, then let’s not rush into any conclusions. one thing we have to remember with bmac: this is his first year as a starter, and he hasn’t played half the season. after the deangelo hall debacle this year, i’m thinking that teams will a little more carefull when signing cbs to big deals…and bmac does not have the credentials that hall had.

by NoCal-SteelCity on Dec 1, 2008 9:16 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, so far theres no proof of this

I honestly dont think thats the issue.

If william Gay wasn’t holding the fort he’d be playing. Plus, Deshea was back and ready so obviously they could afford to rest a good guy.

It would be pretty idiotic to sit there and “not get well” when there are younger guys basically doing your job well enough. Thats basically just asking to lose your job.

Hes a competitor he wouldnt just be sitting there while other people play his position

by Mechem on Dec 1, 2008 9:31 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

McFadden isn’t worried about losing his job, he’s worried about getting his next one.

This is just my opinion of course.

by steelguy99 on Dec 1, 2008 9:58 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Another quote was from I believe the paper, maybe PG?, where McFadden paraphrased with “I have to pay attention to the future and I’m going to be an FA this year.”

by steelguy99 on Dec 1, 2008 10:07 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Loley has been reporting

that rosehous (his agent) was rushing McFadden to play in the NE game. That sounds a lot more reasonable to me than this idea that he’s holding out. Its in his interest to showcase himself as much as possible to us and the rest of the league.

by phxsteeler on Dec 1, 2008 9:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Um, just the opposite.

"Word has it, though, that McFadden’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has been in his client’s ear about returning to quickly and getting hurt.

McFadden is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season."

“Bryant McFadden continued practicing, but there’s no word yet if he’s been cleared medically to play. As noted earlier this week, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus is telling McFadden to wait. We’ll see how that plays out for the free agent-to-be,”

by steelguy99 on Dec 1, 2008 9:56 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would think he'd be playing ASAP

I would imagine that again if he really is so focused on his new deal potential that he’d be begging to play so that he could get out there and show up.

I hate rosenhaus personally I think hes quite the team wrecker. But I honestly think B-Mac will get a deal done in the burgh. I really hope so. if not though we seem to have enough competent individuals playing. Even if Ike Taylors hands are made of lead.

by Mechem on Dec 1, 2008 10:08 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Rosenhaus is a team wrecker but

You don’t retain him as an agent unless you are all about the buck in the first place. Plaxico anyone?

Reading this article,

It sounds to me like the dude is just being careful. You don’t have to look any further than to the team we are playing this week and their injured CB, Terence Newman, who came back too early from same kind of injury and reinjured himself. He is just making it back now i think.

by Jonny B. on Dec 2, 2008 10:51 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m sure he’ll be careful all the way until his big money contract comes around.

by steelguy99 on Dec 2, 2008 10:58 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm suprised at all of you, it's all about exposure.

The reason that B-Mac is not back is that the Steelers don’t need him back right now, and it helps the Steeers at the end of the year.

If Deshea and Gay do well enough, no need to rush B-Mac from injury, while this is true it does two things.

#1. Lowers B-Mac’s available asking price for the Steelers. Why should we pay him so much if he couldn’t beat out or hold off Deshea the last three years, whether due to injury or Deshea playing out of his mind?

#2. Lowers his exposure to other interested teams. If B-Mac is not on the field intercepting passes, or blowing up recievers teams like New England aren’t as apt to notice when they go to address their CB situation in the offseason.

Agreed. We are the number one defense without him.

I would add reason #3

It allows us to develop William Gay, who has turned out to be a very steady and promising young player.

by SteelerBuddha on Dec 2, 2008 9:41 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They will resign Harrison

no way they let such a dominant player go. He may be getting up there in years but Farrior and Ward were and we resigned them. I don’t know much about Harrison personally but he doesn’t seem the type to set really high demands. Hes not a trash talker or a diva who’s gonna threaten to walk unless hes payed big. I think he resigns on a reasonable contract.

Not sure about McFadden. Would love to see him resign but if he demands to much (which would be ridiculous on his part since he gets injured more than anyone) than he’ll walk.

However, with both these players I’ll give the Steelers’ history the benefit of the doubt. Most of our players would rather play for us than make bigger bucks elsewhere……..with some exceptions of course.

by shleeve on Dec 1, 2008 8:40 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually the guy is pretty dumb,

I know a few people who have dealt with him on personal and business levels, and they have both told me the same thing, the guy is not very bright and does not think much for himself. Therefor it will likely be whatever his agent says. If he has an agent that wants the big bucks or an agent who wants his client happy and successful.

The reasons that James was cut from the Steelers had nothing to do with athletic ability, it was because it was so hard for him to understand the complicated defense. Tunch Ilkin said that Potsie told him that Deebo would throw his hands up in training camp and leave the field because he was so frustrated that he had no idea what he was doing.

Now will James leave a system that he understands, is successful in, and has worked so hard to get into in the first place, to maybe have to learn a new system again?

resign him

we have too. he is the most dominant linebacker we’ve had since the lloyd/greene days, and this year will go down as arguably the greatest single season in the history of pittsburgh steelers linebackers. sure, deebo is 30, and will be 31 at the start of next year. but the fact that he’s not a big guy (6’0" 245) and the fact that he didn’t become an everyday player until he was 28ish, gives him a little more life than most lbs his age.

plus, we need him for protection. ever wonder why no one has tried to get in a fight with anyone on the steelers this year? i know why…james harrison. tons of players of players make threats when they’re talking shit during the game….james harrison means it. if he says he’s “going to kill you,” then you better run.

So true

Yeah this guy is absolutely crucial to our success. Dont get me wrong, we have guys willing to fill in the ranks (winks at Davis) but the point is this guy is at his peak, and he has plenty of gas in the tank. Ride him into the shimmering glow of a Lombardi trophy.

And in relation to protection. I believe it was the great Peezwald who asked "Who you want goin down a dark alley with you? Me or him (him being Jerramy Stevens)? "

Well if I had to choose between Peezwald and Deebo. Im taking the dude benching 465

Insider Tip

I’ve posted in the past about my knowledge of Harrison sleeping in an abandoned warehouse in the southside on an old twin mattress set up on concrete blocks with all his winter clothes on.. word on the street is that even if they give him a big deal.. nothing will change for deebo.. he will still get up every morning.. and feed himself gunpowder through his skimask.. in the silence.. watching his breath in the cold PGH air..

I thought he ate the corpse of last weeks quarterbacks…

That makes me think of all the possibilities for telling Harrison tales. I think Chuck Norris has had his time in the sun. Pretty sure Deebo would break him in half.

I read...

That actually, most of the Greek Mythological people were actually James Harrison. Hercules was in fact Deebo.

James Harrison also led the Mongols, he also conquered much of an empire using the alias “Alexander the Great”

Harrison scaled mount everest despite most normal african american’s fear of cold.

And Silverback is also that big guy that holds up the entire earth.

hmmmm

The guy holding up the Earth was Atlas by the way, therefore Deebo was Atlas.

James Harrison can solve a problem like Maria….

James Harrison can have his cake AND eat it too….

Guns don’t kill people, James Harrison does.

The Incredible Hulk was based on James Harrison……………as a child.

Jumping the gun

The Steelers signed Silverback to a four year contract in April of 06. I understand that we should throw him an extension front loaded with cash as a reward for his domination of the WORLD the past two seasons but he is still under contract till 2010. Although I would not like to be the poor bastard in the room with him as he is told to play though his current deal!
Deebo what is good in life?

by Burgernazi on Dec 1, 2008 11:45 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yea

We’ll see if they rework it this offseason, or if thats not necessary. Depends on what kind of advice he gets from the agent. He’s a hard guy to put a finger on personality wise, at least so say those closer to the team than me. This one could be interested and buck some of the trends we’ve seen with the team in the salary cap era.

Hey blitz, you said mr. drew lickyourchops is timmons agent right?

by steelguy99 on Dec 2, 2008 8:28 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

unfortunately

McFadden is going to want to break the McBank so we need to let him go. William Gay gets better every game in my opinion, so he will take B-Mac’s spot for good. Gay is our new Deshea, not an overly explosive athlete but he has a nose for the ball and being in the right place. Plus youngster Roy Lewis could fill in where needed next year as he progresses this year and through the summer.
I wish Mcfadden would give the Steelers a discount seeing as how we broke him into the league and gave him his shot as a starter. However, I have to remember that only 5% of the players in the NFL have morales like these and the other 95% will go where the money is.
Thouh I do believe that Silverback is a part of the small percentage of good people in the NFL and he would most likely want to be a Steeler for life! Or so I would hope…let’s pay the man!

by iBleedBlack&Gold on Dec 2, 2008 4:41 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All I want is for mcfadden to play out his friggin year here. “Oh I’m sorry, I can’t play the run, I don’t want to hurt my wittle arm because my agent told me not to.”

by steelguy99 on Dec 2, 2008 8:30 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No worries

You don’t have to worry about that. With Deshea and Gay behind him, LeBeau will not hesitate to sit BMac if LeBeau thinks he’s holding back.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Dec 2, 2008 9:18 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gay really has stepped up in a big way for us to even be having this conversation.

He was our 2nd 5th round pick in the 2007 draft. McFadden was a 2nd round pick in 2005.

Gay does not have a nose for the ball like McFadden, and is not quite as solid, but the disparity in values is striking. If Gay keeps it up he could be with the steelers for a very, very long time.

by steelguy99 on Dec 2, 2008 9:33 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow

you really don’t like the guy! I totally get where you are coming from steel, but I guess I feel like stuff is less black and white. Many of these guys really do play hurt, but its hard for me to find fault in a guy who is taking a little bit longer to rehab his arm.

by SteelerBuddha on Dec 2, 2008 10:00 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, my dislike is pretty bad and jades my judgment, I can own up to that. I guess I take it personally when a player isn’t willing to put everything on the table for the steelers, which is by no means their obligation. It’s a pretty unrealistic viewpoint to take…

Imaginary scenario:
McFadden: “Man, I am worried about my forearmarm. I’ve been practicing for weeks but you never know about the contact, even with a hard cast on it. Better sit it out until I’m sure.”
Spaeth: “Dude, my hand is fucking broken.”

by steelguy99 on Dec 2, 2008 10:11 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

I can see where you come from. But still, I have to sit there and say I think the team is being smart, giving him practice time with little to no contact until he can go out there and kick some butt.

by Mechem on Dec 2, 2008 11:44 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Could be the coaches too

Don’t forget, Willie rushed back from two injuries and hasn’t been quite the same. In fact, Moore has been outplaying Willie. Maybe the coaches are trying to avoid a similar drop in production: a healthy B Mac backed up by two healthy guys (Deshea and Gay) is better than putting a less than 100% BMac in for either of those guys, expecially since Gay has played well..

by CarlWeathersMustache on Dec 2, 2008 12:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Steelers don't resign their own UFA

The Steelers resign their top players a year before their contract expires. The team will not get into a bidding war on the open market. The fans spent all last year whining about resigning Faneca when the guy was gone from Day One. This year, it’s McFadden. I say the only way BMac comes back is with his tail between his legs because no one makes him a big offer.

by Steelin on Dec 2, 2008 12:47 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed. Gay gives us leverage against BMac but BMac won’t care about the contract the steelers offer him unless it’s the one with the biggest dollar signs. And it won’t be.

The steelers have plenty of money to spend especially if they don’t sign BMac, and how often does a team spend big money on two corners? Ike is already rather well paid, and BMac seems to get injured (not saying it’s his fault). Our secondary performance without BMac has been surprising and quite good, and everyone should remember that Gay is in his 2nd year as opposed to 4th. Townsend is on the slide but we have some young guys that could come up and show enough upside. We played the patriots with Ike, Gay, Townsend, and Madison? The pats will say that their guys dropped balls, and I will say that it is harder in corners in inclement weather because they have to make their cuts in slop whereas the WRs know where they are going. It’d be great to have two lights out corners, but the defense can do very well without them.

I really don’t care to see McFadden on this team, but he is a damn fine player and if a deal can be done it would be great for our defense. We’ll have some money around and we’ll just have to see how it plays out, but the fact that a deal wasn’t done before is not good news for McFadden. His value will probably be low after this season, but I still think he looks elsewhere. I’m obviously biased though.

by steelguy99 on Dec 2, 2008 2:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

Again, this is what I love about our management. We can afford to let people go because we have guys waiting to fill the ranks.

I so far have been impressed by Gay. And if it wasnt for that one ball hitting him right in the nuts hed’a been able to pick it off. Anybody would have dropped that pick seeing as it basically took his sack right off. (I think this was in the Cinci game)

Anyway B-Mac does have lots of life left though, thats why I’d like to sign him. Desheas pretty much done and so that leaves you with ike who is solid, and Gay who is rather unproven still.

If B-Mac doesnt play the Cowboys Gay will get a real chance to step up.

by Mechem on Dec 2, 2008 2:51 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dont see how B-mac has much leverage

Everyone keeps saying he`s going to get big money but i dont really see how he has earned it. This was his first year as a starter and hes been hurt all year. I think talent wise he is very good and knows and fits into our system well, but a few int`s does`t make you a top notch free agent. I don`t get it, it seems like his leverage is mostly hype not production. I think it would be a shame to let him walk because we have all waited so long for him to develop and now that hes finally in kill mode we would`t even get to see his max potential. He will probably go to some garbage team and struggle to fit into a new system.

Someone is always willing to overpay for ex-steelers.

by steelguy99 on Dec 2, 2008 3:07 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not to mention

Inner-Divisional foes wouldn’t mind picking at his brain for insider info on our Defense. Every little bit helps.
Also, there are always teams who could use an upgrade at their current DB positions, and I would bet that B-Mac is one of the highest sought Free Agents after this season. He’s young, shows great athleticism, and a knack for the ball. (Like him or not, let’s face it, he had two INT’s in a matter of only a few games starting at CB. After 12 games, How many INT’s does Ike have again? haha)

This injury is actually going to attract more bidders because the price for his services will obviously have dropped from what they would have been at the end of this year if he played the whole season.
