Ask Baltimore Beatdown: Questions for the Ravens Blogger

Hey Steelers' faithful, it's Rexx, the Ravens blogger. This post is for those who want to put aside the pure hatred both teams' fans have for each other and focus on the specifics of the upcoming game. Here is where you ask questions about the game to be answered from a Ravens perspective. Keep them clean and not trash talking, as there are certainly other posts, both here and over at Baltimore Beatdown, for that stuff. I'll be back the rest of the week to answer your questions.

At the same time, feel free to come over to our site and leave you own posts and comments. As always, we love to talk trash but no personal foul mouthed comments (like the Browns fans always do).

Great, great game coming up this Sunday afternoon. I'll be there and going crazy, and I expect the black & gold to have a decent presence there unfortunately, but will enjoy the escape from reality to be part of a great game that is the true definition of what football is all about. Even if you're not a fan of either team, this is the game to watch if you really love football.

Who will get the bulk of the carries in the running game, and what percentage of the carries do you think will each of your backs will get?

also, I know some of your backs are banged up. What are the status of those guys?

Right now

I expect the Ravens to go with Le’Ron McClain, as his size is probably the best way to attack your deense. Ry Rice s a little banged up, as is McGahee. Willis was not effective in the Redskins game but I expect him to be okay. No matter what and who carries the rock for either team, they’re not getting much though.

yeah,

mcgahee has been killing me in fantasy. I finally had to drop him, since you never can tell if he is going to even play.

hey man

I seem to be in the minority here, but I’m not very confident at all in our ability to beat you guys. The Ravens have been VERY under the radar this whole year for lord knows why, but your defense is just as good as ours and your offense has at least some sense of an identity. I’m still pissed that we’re dickin around with Bruce Arians while you guys have freakin Cam Cameron. At night I dream about what our offense would look like if we didn’t have the worst offensive coordinator in the league.

Anyway, I don’t really have any questions, but I’d just like to make it known that I think the Ravens are much better than their media attention suggests, and I’m scared out of my wits about this game. The Ravens and Steelers are both right around the upper crest of the AFC this year. Here’s to a good game and no injuries (haha, like there’s any chance of that). I hope we’re the better team, but we’ll see.

So true

I think talent wise these teams match up very well. I think in any given week they are the two best defenses in the league. What bugs me is the the Steelers are still sputtering on offense. I actually think we have a ton of talent on the offensive side of the ball – but unfortunately for us its loaded at the “skill” positions. Our offensive line remains a work in progress that really hasn’t won the physical battles it needs to win for us to be a bruising football team. I think its no surprise considering that our most veteran guy on the line is Justin Hartwig and Max Starks is the highest draft pick on the line having been taken late in the 3rd round. The rest of the guys are both young and inexperienced – Chris Kemoeatu is in his first year as a starter – he was a 6th round pick. Darnell Stapelton had never really played even as a back up, he was undrafted and is only two years out of college. Willie Colon was taken in the fourth round. He is traded time last year with Max Starks.

At the beginning of the season we had two physical, experienced high draft picks on the line – both of whom are done for the season with injuries. I think its made a big difference in our ability to dominate a game mentally and physically at the line of scrimmage. Having said that, I have to give credit to the guys who are in there for gelling and playing hard.

Which brings me to my question, I am curious to hear a bit about how your O-line has played this year – and how your young guys are coming along. How has Willie Anderson been holding up at RT?

RELAX

Have some confidence in your team, guys. This game is a tough one, but rest assured in that Tomlin and the rest of the team realize that fact as well. They know what this game means. I’m positive they are preparing for the slug fest that it will be. We will dictate this game and show the true identity of their rookie quarterback.

by sn0wballz on Dec 10, 2008 1:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t have any confidence whatsoever in the offense. This game may come down to which defense embarasses the opposing offense more, and maybe it’s just because I’ve watched our offense all year, but I think our offense is more embarassable than theirs.

I wouldn't go that far

I think the offense has a lot going for it (Ben, Ward, Heath, Holmes, Nate, MM, Willie (if healthy), Gary Russel (if they ever let him in), Spaeth (can definitely catch). This is an offense with a TON of great weapons. What it lacks, in my humble estimation is an offensive line that gives them room to operate and an offensive coordinator who has been able to make sense of the whole mess. I am not down on our guys at all – I think this team can go far even with this offense – but lets be honest – they have problems.

by SteelerBuddha on Dec 10, 2008 2:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, I’m not saying there’s no talent on the offense. I’m just saying I have no confidence in them putting long drives together, not turning it over, scoring TD’s on short fields, basically accomplishing anything other than an occasional big play and moving between the 20’s on soft defenses.

Our defense can keep us in any game, and our offense can keep any other team in the game. The 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers: Formula for Excitement

Ravens o-line

has been a pleasant surprise this season. After the retirement of Jonothan Ogden, I fully expected us to be weak there. We’ve also had a bunch of injuries and have a starter on IR. However, the addition of Willie Anderson has been huge and welcome and made a big difference as we are better set right now in my opinion than the Steelers in this area. However, neither o-line will have much success against either defense Sunday.

who was the guy who went down?

Who was the guy who went down? How has his back-up played? How is Ben Grubbs your first round pick from 2007 playing?

I agree that this is one of the few areas were the Ravens are actually definitely stronger than the Steelers. The other thing that I like that you guys are doing (and we are not) is using a big bruising fullback or two in you running formations. There was a time we had a guy named the bus driver in Pittsburgh who used to relish hitting linebackers hard. I miss those days.

Gaither is a mna-child

He was a fifth round supplemental draft pick from Maryland, who became academically ineligible and we took him on a flyer based on his size. He’s only 22 or 23 years old and has made remarkable progress for being so young. I guess learning from Jonothan Ogden can help.

I always saw some magic in Sean Hill. I’m glad the 49ers are giving the Terp a chance. He competed against some great ACC QBs and beat a lot of them.

by raven on Dec 11, 2008 3:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good amount now. Cause he cant recruit for shit

I would say the last terp bball player that didnt graduate might have been Chris Wilcox. Gary refuses to start a freshman and does not believe in bringing in the amazing players out there who only want to play bball for 1 year or 2 then leave. There have been so many amazing MD players that Gary can get, Beasley, Gay, Durant, Summers.

Marshall Yanda

was our right guard that is lost for the season. His backup, Chris Chester has played only okay and is the weak link. Chester was a tight end at Oklahoma before moving to o-line, but is not as big as most guard and Yanda was very good. Ben Grubbs is one of the best left guards we’ve ever had and has anchored the left side of the line.

They are scary

1. They have a D that can completely shut down our O.
2. There’s a small chance we see the line implode like the Eagles game.
3. Their O is playing great ball. Cam is doing a lot of misdirection and the players are executing well. They could give our D fits, especially with how the receivers have started to step up under Flacco.
4. They are highly motivated to win this game.

That said I think our chances are still good. Our boys will show up big.

Whats your personal opinion on Willis McGahee? A lot of the Raven fans i live around would love nothing more then to see him burn in the pits of the depth chart. He’s been good when the blocking is there but never seems to make much on his own. He can’t seem to not get hurt while in a game.

McGahee

is a warrior and being from the U. makes him one of Ray’s boys. If anyone can motivate him to regroup and get his shit together, it’s Ray. I personally think he is a very good back and we will need him to make this final run.

The patriots and cowboys ran effectively against the steelers by spreading us out and a delayed handoff. Do the ravens ever go 4 wide, and if they do, have you ever seen them run out of it?

Obviously past performance does not dictate what they will do in this game. While I expect lebeau to have an answer to this at some point, the patriots gutted us with this style of running and the cowboys followed suit, it would be impossible for other teams facing the steelers not to notice. Maybe there’s not much to really be done unless we sacrifice coverage.

by steelguy99 on Dec 10, 2008 10:44 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Not too sure if...

the Ravens even have four wideouts? They spread out with TE Todd Heap splitting out and even use the Wildcat successfully with Troy Smith at QB, which is better suited for him than even Ronnie Brown in Miami, as Smith has the passing arm to go with the running.

Rexx

by Rexx on Dec 10, 2008 3:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Troy Smith

I had forgotten about him until I read this comment. Obviously he’s on the outside looking in a QB now with super-rookie Flacco, but what’s in store for Smith? Any chances he’ll be used as a ‘slash’ type of guy or is he just backup QB material?

by cgolden on Dec 11, 2008 8:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He's been used in the Wildcat formation

and actually having aguys who is a QB who can run like he did at OSU is a better fit for the Wildcat than Ronnie Bronw in Miami. Smith already threw a 40 yard pass to Flacco out of it and it keeps him in tune in case he needs to come in and play, god forbid, if Flacco gets injured.

Secondary

I know you’ve had injuries in the secondary on and off this season. How’s the health looking there right now? What’s the depth there?

by Chicago Steeler on Dec 10, 2008 11:13 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Losing Chris McAlister

was originally a big concern. However, Fabian Washington has proven to be the biggest pickup of the off season. Samari Rolle has returned to his old self and the nickel backs have done fine. With the pass rush we have and Ed Reed back there, our secondary is just fine.

Gacko

What does Flacco struggle with? We know he has been playing great but what seems to be something he has a hard time adjusting to, reading blitz? hot routes? reading zones? making some throws? has he developed any bad tendencies (a la ben holding on too much to the ball when there is no play)

by tannofsteel84 on Dec 10, 2008 12:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'm no expert...

but I would say the toughest part for him right now is reading zones. He hasn’t seen a whole lot of zone defenses and it showed in the game against the Redskins, as they ran almost exclusively a zone pass def. He’s relatively good at reading the blitz and hitting his hot route if he needs to. As far as his tendencies… I think he’s actually getting out of some bad tendencies that he was in earlier in the season. Look at the 2 (should have been three, but one was called back after review) ints he threw against TEN. On both of them he was forced out of the pocket and made a poor decision to try to force something rather than just throwing it away. At this point in the season he has become much better at realizing its better to play another down than try to make something happen right away. Again, as witnessed by his 3 ints. in the last 8 games (one of which was his receivers fault).

You guys know the answer to that!

Pressure him all day and see how he handles it. Give him time and he’ll make the throws. Force him to run and he might make a mistake. Let him sit back there and you will see he progress he’s made and you will not be happy with the results.

Ray Ray

Isn’t Ray Ray’s contract up after this year? Are they talking about new contract (I’m assuming that the fans still want him right)? Has how his game evolved over the years and how much, if any, has he lost some of his abilities?

by cgolden on Dec 10, 2008 2:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ray Lewis

is still the best MLB in football and in my opinion the best to ever don the pads. There is no underestimating his effect on the rest of the team as a leader, motivator and coach on the field. He is a free agent after this year but Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has said he’ll doing whatever it takes to have Ray retire a Ravens. Not worried one bit.

Rexx

by Rexx on Dec 10, 2008 3:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The Ravens and Ray agreed on a contract extetion. Its a 5 year 25 or 28 million deal that will keep him in Baltimore for the rest of his career. He didn’t sign it yet because the deadline had passed but he will be re-signed at the end of the season. It’s a great move on both parts. The Ravens probly save money because Ray probly wont play 5 more years and the contract is backloaded. Ray gets a chance to retire with the team that drafted him and recieves his final big contract.

Anything but obstruction of Justice is a very funny phrase. . .

There is a ton more to this story than “wrong place at the wrong time” as some Ray-lovers would have you believe, and people who think he’s a bad person have much more to say than “why isn’t he in prison,” but this is the wrong place and wrong time to have that discussion. . . AFC North is on the line folks!

What a lame comment. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s not like he as caught with pot or anything (Holmes). That is an unfair comment and he is a wonderful generous citizen of the city. Furthermore, so many players on all teams look to Ray as a mentor and keep in contact with him all year. He is also the unofficial king of the U. of Miami grads who all work out w/ him in the offseason.

Alright....

I get very fired up for Baltimore. Most of my posts have been unusually aggressive. My apologies.

Now on a more serious note. How do you guys figure you are going to run the ball?

I know Leron McClain can power run, but I dont see much success. On either side of the ball.

But does baltimore have an actual plan on the run or have they already said screw it.

by Mechem on Dec 10, 2008 9:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Harbaugh will say...

The run is the key. So they arent going to screw it, we’ll attempt to pound away with the run. Knowing Cam there will be a couple tricks or “gadgets” here and there. But not a lot, just something for a quick change in tempo to keep you on your feet.

Expect the power runs from McClain and if Rice plays a lil quick change in tempo on maybe a draw or something from him.

They come from a Steelers fans and I’d expect any team’s fan to support them. But Ray might have been gloating over the comments that Mendenhall made about getting 100 yards on us. Ray sort of takes those things personally. He always wants you to know he hit you, but is not a dirty player by any means and there is no player in the league that would say otherwise. Sorry.

by The IC Lion on Dec 11, 2008 11:37 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

OK, how about any evidence whatsoever that he killed somebody?

I’m waiting… The Prosecution blew this big time, as they charged him with murder before they really had the evidence to convict him. They guaranteed a conviction to the media, then discovered they really didn’t have much on him. Bad play.

He did in fact commit obstruction of justice when he said he didn’t know the other two guys, he lied to the cops and stalled the investigation. His proclaimed reason was that he was being charged with murder and felt that if he told the cops he knew the two guys that killed the victims, he’d get convicted of murder too. If that’s the case, it was a dumb thing to do, but somewhat excusable on account of the fact that I’d be pretty freaking scared if two guys I knew killed somebody and I was charged with the crime.

by math_geek on Dec 11, 2008 11:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I never said Ray killed anyone. . .

In fact I dont think he did, so you can stop waiting. I do think he helped his “friends” who did kill 2 people flee the scene of the crime and left two stab victims in his wake to die. Sound like a good person to you? On top of that, he accepted a plea bargain and then testified against his two “friends.” If Ray Ray was so clean and apart from the situation, why plea down? Even if they couldn’t convict him of murder (which again, I dont think they could’ve or should’ve), they had something on Ray. . .enough to get him to agree to terms.

by The IC Lion on Dec 12, 2008 9:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

See… this is my point. He plead guilty to Obstruction of Justice, the specific charge being lying to the cops, because he DID lie to the cops.

They may have given him a plea bargain to testify, so he didn’t go to jail for Obstruction, but he was guilty of Obstruction because he lied to the cops. Making up other things he may or may not have done is pure speculation, and should be beneath us. It’s not like OJ where we had an army of evidence against him. There really wasn’t much on Ray.

by math_geek on Dec 12, 2008 1:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe I got carried away

With the whole “why did he plea down” and ‘the cops must’ve had something else bad on Ray" bit. . . you’re right, so I take that back. But I’m not speculating when I say he left two men to die and that his limo was the get away car. He ran with his friends, lied to cops, and told his limo driver to lie too because he was looking out for his own good. Because of that, Ray is a free man, and because of that, I think he’s a two-faced jackass when he goes all “holier than thou” on the front cover of SI.

by The IC Lion on Dec 13, 2008 11:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude

Obstruction of justice is a serious offense: it’s a felony, in fact. If the obstruction relates to a charge against the person obstructing justice, the sentence can be reaised two levels on the federal sentencing scale, which makes it even more serious.

I understand you are a fan of your team, but our legal system protects your rights and freedoms. The rationale for obstruction of justice is the defendant attempted to hinder and defile that system. That is a big deal. Some things are bigger than a football player.

Ray's not a murderer and everyone knows it

his friends might have been but make sure you know the whole story, which includes the two dudes follwoing Ray’s posse outside, hitting one of them ofer the head with a champagne bottle, and then shooting after the limo when they sped away. Too bad for the guys who died, as no one should have to, but these guys were thugs and started the whole thing. Ray just needed to learn that he couldn’t hang out with his old friends and had to learn a huge lesson. He’s been a model citizen since then, but was never a murderer. Besides the guys who did the deed got off scott free as there wasn’t enough evidence to convict.

Rexx

by Rexx on Dec 11, 2008 4:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My understanding of the charge involving Ray Lewis

was that he was around a large number of people, including individuals with prison records and warrants. Basically Ray was a young, stupid kid hanging out with people he had no business hanging out with. He will be the first to admit that and afterward, even now, he meets with rookie players to talk with them over the dangers of having posses, which sadly continues to get young players in trouble . The Obstruction of Justice charge was due to the fact he could not provide the names and addresses to those that had been around him during the night. He could have fault the rather weak charge, it was just simpler to cop out and get his shit together. If you don’t think that the DA wasn’t just out to nail Lewis on anything rather than seek justice, examine how they handled the case. Specifically, when he was arrested, and he had not left police custody, the police served a warrant on his family home. Why? They were obviously looking for any evidence of anything unrelated to nail a big fish. I am certain they were hoping to find weapons or drugs. This is the same case that resulted in complete acquittals of the two main suspects. Lets be honest here, the media and legal profession make their names on big cases. Look at the Duke Rape case, were big names get involved and a case goes out of control. Even now, media like ESPN like to create drama and controversy. Like I previously mentioned, Ray Lewis has worked not only to turn his image around, but also his life. He regularly donates time and money to charity, even going to far as Africa. He has been turned to for advice from players around the league. And to reiterate, he was a shithead back then but he has completely turned his life around. But the image that sells stories is this big bad monster who got away with murder. Before a game, they show him leading the crazy chants and celebrating big hits…they don’t show him leading post game prayers with both Ravens and opposing team members. Its the same way the sell Hines Ward as the dirtiest player in the league and everyone is out to get him. That’s not true but it generates interest and sells stories.

I know Price and Ngata on the dline

but who else do you have that’s been playing well this year?

Also, what would you attribute your defenses success to more; personnel or scheme?

Finally, what would you say the Dirty Birds’ defensive strengths and weaknesses are?

Love the interaction, much more cordial than Dallas fans. I hate the Birds, but at least both sides can be civil about it.

Thanks.

Kelly Gregg has been IR'd

so that put DT Justin Bannan as a starter and he has been lights out. The Ravens used a bunch of other reserves as well who have just performed great. It’s not hard to contribute to a defense when the offense is concentrating on Ray Lewis and Ed Reed and Haloti Ngata. Our defensive schemes, especially on third downs is so impressive. Next time, watch the movement after the offense sets to see where these guys are lining up. Rex Ryan is a defensive genius and Ray Lewis and the rest watch so much tape that they know what’s coming almost all the time.

Want to beat us? Use your tight end over the middle on slants underneath that our LB’s can’t cover. Same with RB’s out of the backfield. Just look out for the crossing hit by Ray!

question for Rexx

I’ve heard Flacco has good arm strength. How is your downfield passing game? Are you guys a threat to throw a 70 yards td pass if we stack against the run, or are you more likely to beat us with the intermediate passing game if we stack the run?

We have so many 20+ yard passes

this year compared to last, when I think we had only three! Flacco has a great touch on the long ball and a cannon for the intermediate ones. Mason is the possession receiver, Clayton the deep threat and Heap the crossing target. Ray Rice does great on the screen as he is deceptively fast and strong.

Personally, I'm not at all worried about the deep ball

From my recollection, our secondary has given up one this year. It was to Reggie Wayne, and Ike “Hands” Taylor jumped up to pick the ball off, but instead of catching the ball, it bounced off both of his stone palms and fell into Wayne’s open arms. I won’t call it a fluke, but I would bet that Ike doesn’t let it happen again.

Our cb’s (Taylor, BMac, Gay) are all too fast to get beat deep on a streak in man to man coverage. Also, Ike and BMac are both extremely physical corners with exceptional recovery speed. Furthermore, Troy plays a great centerfield.

TO couldn’t get us deep. Moss couldn’t. Edwards couldn’t. Nor could Andre Johnson, Plaxico, or Santana Moss.

What worries me is the intermediate range passing. Everyone knows the Steelers zone blitz…that’s just what we do. So, who knows the Steelers D better than any other opponent? LIkely the Dirty Birds…I would expect them to try to exploit the gaps in our zone rather than go for the knockout punch with a deep ball. Especially if it’s going to be cold and/or windy (I haven’t checked/heard any weather forecasts for the game).

Like I said "From my recollection"

I’m not one of those guys that goes and reviews every single play from every single game. That’s why I included a qualifying comment. But, regardless…we’ve allowed 2 long pass plays now, from my recollection…

Here is one that has confused me for awhile...

Ok, so McAllister is out for the season, and whenever I mention that to a Ravens fan all I get is “hes not all that good anyway” or something similar.

First off, hes a pro-bowler who has been the #1 CB on a consistently deadly Defense for awhile now. For awhile he was referred to as a shutdown corner.

Now, he is replaced by Fabian Washington or was an Oakland cast off. He may be faster than McAllister but it takes a lot more just speed to be a good corner.

Ok, so the question is:
Do Raven fans actually believe that Washington is an upgrade over McAllister?
I personally think that Big Ben should attack Washington with the deep ball or may be beat easier by play fakes or pump fakes (which Ben always does when he goes deep………even Newman bit on it).

by shleeve on Dec 10, 2008 10:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I've been very specific about this...

Cmac lost a step, simple as that… Hes still a great corner against some of the slower receivers but he can’t hang with the likes of Marvin Harrison, Holmes, a Steve Smith type… He doesnt have the speed for it anymore. The man has some of the best hands of any corner, and a great eye/nose/whatever for the ball in terms of breaking up a pass. But he’ll get beat on the deep ball almost any time now a days…

Fabian on the other hand, while obviously not having the hands of Cmac as shown by a few of his drops, definitely has the speed thing down. I’m not sure if you saw the highlights I believe it was the Giants game where he ran down one of there backs who had a full head of steam and caught him on like the 3. Mind you Samari Rolle was right behind the back like half the way but couldnt catch him, where as Fabian wasn’t and came out of nowhere to get the job done.

So, I believe Fabian has become an okay replacement and given another year in the Ravens system will be the next Cmac, he’s just got to get his hands up, I don’t want to see him dropping anymore picks. I dont think he has blown too many, if any big plays since he’s started playing number 1/number 2 (now that Rolle is back)

So in conclusion to answer your question, He’s not an upgrade, but he is a worthy replacement. And I wouldnt try that deep ball on him, he’s not the type that gets beat on the long ball.

by Matchz Malone on Dec 11, 2008 12:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't mean just you, I've heard it from many a Ravens fan

And a lot of them actually believe Washington is an upgrade.

Thats why my question was whether Raven fans thought he was an upgrade. I don’t base this question on the assumption of one fan, no insult meant by that or anything, but it was the summation of many a fan’s opinion.

All that being said though, you do make some good points about Washington and McAllister.

Washington will likely end up over hines ward a lot though, won’t he? Ward is a lot of things, but he’s not a deep threat. I expect ward to beat up on him as washington is clearly faster than hines, but ward is a SOB. How is washington on underneath routes, or would you expect the ravens to try and stick speed with speed and keep him on holmes?

by steelguy99 on Dec 11, 2008 9:14 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Umm...

Samari is still the number 1… Washington will be on the fast guy… either Holmes or Washington… lol Washington on Washington.

I just read your whole comment… I dont think its speed for speed as much as its…
Samari is number 1 = Hines is number 1
Washington is number 2 = Holmes is number 2

It just ends up matching up that way, though knowing Rex Ryan I wouldnt be surprised if they switched once or twice throughout the game

by steelguy99 on Dec 11, 2008 9:53 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Many do but

others stick to their better side of the field. I’ve always wondered why don’t the #1 corners stick with the #1 receiver all over the field, but what do I know?

Rexx

by Rexx on Dec 11, 2008 9:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly, some stick to the same side, and matching up exactly on the right receiver out of the bunch formation is tough on CBs. So can someone tell me how washington will do when he ends up against ward instead of why that matchup will never happen?

by steelguy99 on Dec 11, 2008 10:02 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Your missing my point

You keep saying when… I’m saying I doubt heavily that the ravens will do that. They are going to move washington & rolle around to make sure they are matched up with the proper receiver avoiding the “Oh Shit!” when washington gets KTFO! but then again rolle is a punk too…

I guess you reminded me something else about Cmac… he was a bit more physical and less of a kitty cat

by steelguy99 on Dec 11, 2008 11:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

in terms of corners playing one on one… It generally only involves walking from one side of the field to the other to make sure you’re lined up in front of the guy you are supposed to be lined up against.

Life is nothing but Beats & Rhymes

by Matchz Malone on Dec 11, 2008 12:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bunch formations

That’s why people use motion and bunch formations. It makes it difficult for corners to stick with one assigned guy. When we come out of the tight 3 man bunch it’s hard for corners to not naturally pick each other if they stay man-to-man.

by Chicago Steeler on Dec 11, 2008 12:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But the steelers never run the bunch formation, so you guys should be fine.

by steelguy99 on Dec 11, 2008 12:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No

Offenses run the bunch formation so that they can “trick” defenses with slow developing plays that often times have multiple receivers running routes to the same area of the field, which allows one zone defender to cover two wide receivers. Its genius really.

I mean think about it: if it wasn’t so outright successful, would a genius like THE Bruce Arians employ it?

mewelde+ravens receivers

If the Steelers want to put some points on the board, they’re gonna have to run the ball at least a little bit. I think that their best shot on the ground is with MM. He was great in the monday night game, and hopefully he or Russell can give us something. With the way FWP has looked the last two weeks, and with his career history against the Ravens, anything we get from him would be a pleasant surprise. If we can stay balanced on offense with a consistent ground game, and get some pressure on Flacco, we should take this game. The question is, if we don’t get pressure on Flacco, who can make plays for the ravens in the passing game? I know Derrick Mason is very good, but who else do you guys throw to. How is Todd Heap playing? I know he’s played well against us in the past. If the Ravens are going to score points against us, how are they going to do it?

WE DEY!!!!!

by jr3131 on Dec 10, 2008 11:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Sorry, but running the rock will not be fun to watch

for both teams. However, because I think the Ravens o-line is better than Pittsburgh’s, I expect the three headed running attack to be more successful than Pittsburgh’s. That said, more successful might end up being 50 yards total vs. 35 for you guys. Either way, both teams are going to have to wing the ball downfield. The one who makes the most plays with the least turnovers wins. Very simple.

Mark Clayton has come out of the shadows with some greeat catches and long TD receptions. Todd Heap was invisible for most of the season but has shown up lately. Mason is still Flacco’s go-to guy, but Flacco has spread the wealth around real well.

Three-headed running attack?
I suppose this would include a healthy McGahee and Ray rice?

From what I understand they aren’t good to go for sure.

by steelguy99 on Dec 11, 2008 10:05 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

McGahee has/had a shoulder stinger

He should be “good” to go for the game. Ray Rice is more questionable. He has a deep contusion on his thigh… almost the point that it’s a bone bruise. But I think McClain/McGahee will be sufficient… especially if they are running behind Lorenzo Neal. That man knows how to open up some holes.

I went to an Eagles/49ers game a few years back… There was a guy in my section wearing a Giants jersey. He was harassed mercilessly by the Eagles fans until the whole section started pointing at the guy and chanting “ASS—-HOLE.” Finally security came and escorted the guy out. I don’t know about too many other teams’ fans but that along with throwing batteries at Santa… Eagles fans have to be the worst.

As far as Ravens games… I’ve been to a couple, as a Ravens fan of course, and I haven’t noticed anyone of the other ilk being harassed too much. Maybe some verbal abuse, but you would expect that. I’ve not seen anyone being physically bullied, though.

You think imbreds, rednecks are bad?…Go to Oakland and meet a Raider fan. If you can understand what they’re saying, then try holding a conversation with them. You’ll be dumber for you efforts.

Heckled and verbally harassed, but dont expect to have beers thrown at you or your jersey ripped off your back. Enjoy the game and cheer on your team all you want, but I wouldnt turn around after a big play by Pitt and start doing a the river dance and screaming that we wear purple jerseys. Then you might get murdered. But do expect a lot of middle fingers and fuck yous to be thrown your way.

A key to this game that no one is talking about. . .

Two teams with defenses that can shutdown offenses. There’s a good chance that this game could be decided by special teams / field position. I think the Steelers boast one of the best place kickers in the NFL, but our punting really concerns me. Ravens strengths/weaknesses in special teams?

by The IC Lion on Dec 11, 2008 10:40 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

If I remember the last game against the ravens, we were constantly losing field position on traded punts.

Definitely on the eagles game where their punter was basically kicking like a placekicker, and we paddycaked punts back to them.

by steelguy99 on Dec 11, 2008 10:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sam Koch might be the best punter in the NFL

The man has constantly pinned opposing offenses within the 20, sometimes ever the 10. He has a hugeeeeeeee leg and has kicked some balls over 60 yards this season, even had a 70 yarder or 2! I think he deserves a Pro Bowl spot. But he is on the Ravens and we dont get enough coverage. I mean the Redskins have 20 pro bowl candidates, cause they are that good of football team, right???

You have to hate losing more than you love winning

by Mr MaLoR on Dec 11, 2008 1:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yea Koch has been ridiculous this year

He should be a Pro Bowl lock as well as Haloti Ngata but being the Ravens we can all see those snubs coming from a mile away…. It’s alright though. If they got national respect then they wouldn’t be Ravens anymore, would they?

by DT711 on Dec 11, 2008 1:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Please. . .

Poor Ravens don’t get no respect. It’s not that Ravens punters don’t get national attention, NO punters get national attention. And isn’t the pro bowl (outside of starters) selected entirely by coaches an players? This isn’t the AP poll.

What about kickoff coverage?

by The IC Lion on Dec 11, 2008 1:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

According to the stats the ravens are 14th in returns against them at an average of 23.1 yards. Interestingly they are the only team to have allowed 2 returns for touchdowns.

Maybe this will be gary’s game.

Our punting is great.

I
’m real worried about Matt Stover and his geriatric leg only hitting accurately from inside the 40, and our rookie kicker might not make it as he has high school final exams on Monday morning. Our Special Teams is great one game and horrible the next. Not too sure which one will show up Sunday.

Yes sir

Im telling you, the man is monster with his right leg. To go along with his leg strength, he is extremely accurate. He has done a great job of kicking to the sidelines this year, trying to keep the ball away from some of the best returners in the league that we have faced. Cribbs tore us apart, but Koch did wonders against desean jackson.

And one thing I love is that when he makes a great punt and forces the offense to go 80-90 yards against us, everyone on the defense comes and gives him a high five and tells him thank you. He may be our punter, but he is still a football player and still a Raven. He is just as important to winning a game as any of our other players. Its a 53 man effort isnt it?

Zero - It's a new era in B-More

Harbaugh has this team disciplined unlike any Ravens team before. It took the first half of the season to get there as evidenced by our first game vs the Steelers, but the team has come along way since then. The players finally understand those penalties are unacceptable, and killing us in close games, and they will be disciplined if they ever forget it.

Thanks from the Beatdown guys

Just read all of the posts here, and I gotta say as much as we all hate each other, this has been one of the more civilized posts. At our site, it had gotten a little ugly at times, but just the testosterone flowing through the keyboards of us all.

It is really weird seeing Steelers fans say they are worried of this game. Cause I am 100% sure you guys were not worried about Matt Cassel and Tony Romo, as they have been shaky all year.

We are a team under the radar right now. No one will ever pick us to succeed because of the fact that we have Rookie head coach, rookie QB, rookie Runningbacks, and a Off. Coor that led a team to 1-15 last year. But hey, we live behind our defense and things are finally starting to come together on the Offensive side of the ball.

This is going to be a very fun game to watch, as there is a lot on the line.

I created a post at our Ravens blog breaking down the AFC North Scenarios, check it out guys, see you on Sunday!

Football Outsiders gave you guys a ton of credit preseason and that has continued throughout the season. I think you guys are only a hare behind the Giants in their scoring, and they give your defense a better score than ours. They’re not always right, but they tend to be right. I’m scared because our teams are very similar, but you guys have an OC that’s like 20 times better than ours and an offense that is less inclined to implosion.

Yea, cause we understand the type of footbal that will be playedon Sunday.

Our teams are going to hit the shit out of the other and its going to be a low scoring hard hitting battle. I can see the Cowboys fans coming over here and saying that Romo is going to throw 300 for 3 tds, Owens will destroy townsend for 10 catches, 175, 2 tds. Their defense is going to make Big Ben their bitch. ETC…… Something like that right?

I think both the sites realize that one false move, and a defense is going to eat you alive. You have the 2 best defenses in the NFL, both of which have been the best in the NFL for about the last 8-10 years. Both our teams play the exact style of football and both our teams do certain things better than the other. IE Steelers pass rush > Ravens pass rush, Ravens run game > Steelers run game.

Yet, we both still try to hit you int he mouth, get a lead, and run the clock out.

Its gonna be fun in my hometown this weekend.

Back atcha

Thanks for being part of the discussion.

It is really weird seeing Steelers fans say they are worried of this game. Cause I am 100% sure you guys were not worried about Matt Cassel and Tony Romo, as they have been shaky all year.

It’s relatively easy for us to be confident when faced with strong offenses. We have a marvelous defense and too few people understand what an advantage that is. So, not only does our D give us a bedrock foundation, it also has the feel of a secret weapon. People don’t get it. For example: I had to explain it to my friends (Pats fans) by saying the 2008 Pittsburgh D is as good as the 2007 Pats O. Of course, none of them could accept such a comparison until we started running down some numbers. After that discussion, they gave us grudging respect. After our game, they got religion. That sort of conversion gives a fan some swagger.

So, why do we fear the Ravens? Cuz the Ravens aren’t bringing a high-powered offense. They’re packin’ a defense that is very comparable with our own. We, more than anyone else, understand what that means. You’ll note we’re not seriously worried about Flacco. We’re worried about Ed Reed and Ray Ray.

I suspect others are giving the Ravens minimal attention because a) your strongest asset (defense) lives in the shadow of the Steelers; b) you’ve been beaten by the Steelers; and c) you had a couple of bad beats. It’s a perception thing, not a reality. If you win on Sunday, both A & B will evaporate and suddenly sportscasters will be saying, “I knew the Ravens were going to be a force,” or “I knew the Steelers couldn’t make it through the entire season.”

Of course, if the game goes in Pittsburgh’s favor…

I hate band wagoners

If my Ravens can beat Pitt, all these people who never talk about us will hop on our wagon and say we are this good and that good, when they picked against us the whole season. If these people thought that we were going to get 7 wins at most, stick to the teams that you picked to do well this season!

Band wagoners can suck it!

Lost in the discussion about Ray Lewis

is his leadership. He really takes the players around him and make the better. Look at some of the line backers that have moved on beyond the Ravens and you’ll see their numbers just aren’t the same. The one constant the Ravens D has always had has been Ray Lewis. He doesn’t have the body he used to, but my God that man plays smart. I may be crazy in saying this, but I think he could make the transition to coach when he retires. There would be plenty of colleges that would love someone like him as a line back coach.

It was taunting man. His actions in this situation cannot be defended.

“The force was freaking incredible. After the play I wasn’t screaming ‘he is hurt’, I was screaming ‘he is done’”

Anyone watching the game was aware he wasn’t screaming it in a “get the doctors over here” manner. The hit was clean, the reaction was not. When you clearly know a player is “done”, rejoicing seems pretty dick to me.

A rookie should not run his mouth against one of the best to ever do play the sport!

The Ravens defense has the privilege to go out and say we are going to stop you, because we have been doing it for nearly 10 years now. But when an unproven rookie gets his first start of the year and says to our defense “I’m going to have a huge game against you guys” no no no no no. Ray made a clean hit, hit him in the wrong spot on his body, and I guess in a way took pride that he shut “Delicious” up.

And why in the hell does Mendenhall have such a gay name like “Delicious?” Not a good Steeler name.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning

Not quite the story
But when an unproven rookie gets his first start of the year and says to our defense "I’m going to have a huge game against you guys" no no no no no.

Mendenhall was texting to Rice (someone he considered a friend). It was good-natured smack talk between the two of them. The Ravens players ignored the “good-natured” intent of the message and put on a show of faux outrage.

Not saying Ray Ray’s hit wasn’t legit. Not saying he was a part of the whole ‘bounty’ thing. There’s no evidence to support that. But this was not a rookie being a braggart. It was good clean fun taken way out of context.

yah

The actualy Ravens D are so ignorant, just look at ‘T-Sizzle’ saying bounty over the air and then trying to take it back, Ray lewis is a convict, ed reed looks like a convict and probably has done some illegal activities. They are just a bunch of thugs so that does not suprise me what ray lewis did, only reinforces my original opinions about them.

AND NO, you NEVER wish harm to anyone especially in this game, it is just a game, you never BRAG about HURTING someone, as a vet you expect more out of ray but then again he is just a convict so i guess not. Plus yeah its not like mendenhall went to the media and said it, just TEXTING with his FRIEND, thought was friend. RAVENS SUCK.

I really don’t have a reason to hate the ravens like i do the cowboys and patriots. The ravens have never beaten us when it mattered but i hate ray lewis because of his ignorance. Maybe one day the ravens will be good enough for me to hate them.

As for the game. I am trying to expect the unexpected because i actually expect the steelers to crush the ravens like they should but you never know when the unexpected will happen but usually this late in the season nothing unexpected happens because i guess we are expecting it so as long as i am expecting the unexpected its not unexpected anymore and i won’t be as mad if the expected happens. But i really expect us to win this game.
