Where We Stand
Okay! We are in the playoffs and in the running for the number one seed. I have actually not seen the game yet. But I have seen the stats. So, you know my thing is perspective. Let's see where we stand at the moment.
1. We can now officially begin to think in terms of 'SuperBowl'. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I know that we must take things one game at a time, blah, blah blah. But c'mon folks. It's Christmas, the economy's shot to shit and most people believed that if we made the playoffs at all it would be by the hairs of our chinny-chin-chins given our schedule and our various woes (O-Line, etc.). As Tom Jackson said on ESPN this morning; if we beat the Ravens and the Titans next week then the Steelers are the team to fear in the playoffs. Anybody betting on the Titans next week? Actually I don't care. Let's be clear. What this team has accomplished so far is pretty astonishing. The 'D' might be the greatest of all time and we have conquered one of the most formidable schedules ever. Disaster may be waiting in the wings in January, but in very uncertain times we can celebrate a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (and other holidays) with the knowledge that our team and the Steeler Nation are playoff bound and of a very special pedigree. And who knows when things will be this good again.
2. Mike Tomlin for Coach of the Year. As things unfold, this is looking more impressive than what anyone else is accomplishing this year. If we finish 13-3 and get number one seed (a real possibility now) given our schedule, injuries, liabilities and the fact that he is the youngest coach in the League and winning his second division title how could you not give him consideration. And for you Tomlin haters out there; go to Hell! And consider this on your journey. Any hope you may have had for an early firing are absolutely and completely gone. If they're smart, Art and Dan will extend him now. In February it might really cost them. Even if the Pittsburgh front office completely lost their minds and fired him, he'll be a fixture on NFL sidelines for the forseeable future. As they say; sucks to be you.
3. Ben has earned his money. You have to take the good with the bad with Ben. He can be something of knucklehead at times. He holds the ball too long on occasion. He tries to force too many plays that backfire on him and the team. But at the end of the day he has that something that all the truly great ones have. Ben is a winner. And like his coach and his team he doesn't seem to get sufficient credit for what he has accomplished thus far in his career or his continuing efforts now. It will probably take at least another SB win for Ben to get his props. Let's hope it's this year.
4. Bonus!!! We have driven TO and the Cowgirls over the edge! I don't like losing to anyone, but if we had to lose I don't mind as much that we fell to Dungy's Colts, McNabb's Eagles and the Champion Giants. But we have successfully settled scores with the teams we truly hate. Ray-Ray, Suggs and the boys got swept. (work on those bounties). Ocho Cinco's chain gang and minstrial show also went down twice. We dropped the Pats, Jags, Browns, Chargers and (important given where I live) the Skins. But look what we did to the Girls! I would have preferred a 30 point pasting, but (and I am writing just as their game w/ the Giants is beginning) they appear to be unraveling at the seams. And you can say one thing about TO, he's consistent.
5. LeBeau and his mauraders; a performance for the record books. We are perhaps witnessing, at least from a statistical perspective the greatest defensive performance of all time. And I witnessed the '76 Steelers so this is no small admission. We at BTSC should put our heads together and see what we can do in an organized and effective manner to advance the cause of getting this man into the Hall Of Fame.

6. Couldn't happen to a better group of guys. Think about the players who had to step up big to make this happen. I mentioned Ben earlier, and you can say that this is what you expect from first round draft picks. But what about undrafted free agents like James Harrison, Willie Parker and Nate Washington? Role players like Mewelde Moore, Darnell Stapleton, William Gay. Greybeards maintaining a high level such as Hines, Deshea and Farrior. Guys who had to step up such as Max Starks, Hartwig, BMac. This may not be a great collection of players, but they have become a great team. And this should be acknowledged now not later.
It would be a shame that we got so focused upon the goal that we lost sight of and gained no enjoyment from the journey. For the reasons mentioned and others that you will certainly point out over the coming hours this has been an extraordinary season and an extraordinary team. One that could stand among the best of the Super Bowl era if they make it to the championship game. Certainly one of the best in terms of heart and character. So take advantage of the next two, hopefully three weeks. It matters some but not much what happens with the next two games. The main thing is to avoid injuries to key players. Otherwise, enjoy the Holidays and your AFC North Champion Steelers. There will be plenty to worry about in January.

Tomlin for coach of the year and LeBeau for the Hall of Fame. That would be a sweet Christmas.

Im gonna cry!
Because Baltimore’s Stank is hurting my eyes.
But seriously this was beautiful. Truly a special season for this team. They’ve overcome a lot, and despite their obvious shortcomings they have a shot at history here.

Bandwagoners
Let’s hope ESPN talks about how b-more lost the game instead of us winning it like they did last week for Dallas. We still need to be as much under the radar as possible but i don’t know how much that can hold up with a win over TEN and CLE, giving us the #1 spot. Maybe they will think it was a fluke?

Rick Va,
That write up was the bomb. I think you hit some great points about the Steelers from an overall persective. particularly the Tomlin for COTY. Why not. If you’ve either read or watched what the critics have predicted on how the steelers who finish this season, most if not all had them very low in the standings.
And I think Tomlin and LeBeau are getting the job done. There are a lot of Tomlin haters that want to see him fail for reasons no one with any true scope of our societies short comings is willing to admit.
But at least the Ronney’s should expand his cashflow for the next several years because he is a winner. and I think he will be for a long time.

Great Write Up.
The Problem with Dick LeBeau is that only headcoaches are elligible for the HOF. His playing career could possibly get him in though.

They need to open HoF nominations up to coordinators
There are a few of them that do their jobs better than anyone else and they give their teams that edge. It’s just as important as any other component of your team, they should be recognized.

He will get in
Dont worry guys, Jesus is a Steeler fan and will find a way to make LeBeau a HoF man.
He had a hell of a playing career firstly. Secondly, he IS considered a contributor by his contributions to defense in general.
If the NFL doesnt re-write the rules, I believe god will preserve alive LeBeau until Tomlin is done coaching the Steelers at age 62, LeBeau will then take over as head coach and lead us to another 3 super bowls. He will then get hall of fame status at age 97.

I agree, it is a travesty that Dick Lebeau is not in the Hall of Fame
Then again, it boggles my mind who they pick and don’t pick to go into the Hall of Fame..why isn’t Primetime in by now? When are they going to induct Bruce Smith?? What about Ray Guy from the Raiders..talk about a travesty, and I don’t even like the Raiders…

If you mean Dieon Sanders
maybe it’s because the dude ain’t even elligible yet. They will induct Bruce Smith this summer as soon as the votes are final. As for Ray Guy, if he can’t in then no punter should ever be allowed to get in, and I don’t like the Raiders either…

Great write up
Good writing as always Rick. Great points all around and yes, it is such a treat to help the Cowboys unravel. That team is really annoying on so many different levels. Its nice to see them sink under the crushing weight of TO’s ego.
It does seem that for good and for bad, the victory has put us on people’s radars. Yes we deserve to be there, but I am a little worried a victory against Tennessee (and a possibly Giants loss next week) would get people talking about us as Superbowl favorites.
Worse thing could happen of course, but it sure is nice to be unnoticed sometimes.

My Take
1.) We certainly can think Super Bowl. As fans, that’s our job and right. However, let’s hope that the players never think further ahead than the next game. They need to keep their focus and only think about dismantling the team on the other side of the line from them.
2.) While Tomlin is quickly ascending up the ranks in this league, he has no chance of winning COTY. With Sparano turning the Dolphins into a playoff contender this year, Smith in Atlanta turning around the Falcons (with a rookie qb), and Whisenhunt and the Cardinals winning their first division title in 30ish years, the winner will come from that group. I’m sure Tomlin will have his time, unfortunately, it just won’t be this year.
3.) Ben has been earning his money since week 2 of his rookie year. He now has 50 wins in just under 5 seasons. Of those 50 wins, 17 of them were via comeback in either the 4th quarter or overtime. That’s nearly 40% of his career wins coming on drives in the 4th quarter or overtime. That is incredible. John Elway is impressed by that stat. Ben is getting more healthy, and more comfortable. He is making better reads, and throwing the ball better. If Holmes/Washington will start catching the ball, then this offense will start putting up some more points.
4.) I hate the Cowboys…but I hate the Rat Birds more. Also, they won in NE for the first time in, what was it?…20ish years? And now they’ve beaten the Birds twice, and the first time in BMore in 6 years. Awesome.
5.) This defense is outstanding, great, awesome, legendary….the adjectives are endless. If they keep this dominating defensive performance up, win the Super Bowl, I’ll say that LeBeau will somehow find his way into the Hall…where, I don’t think anyone would dispute, he belongs.
6.) I agree here. Like all teams, we have a couple knuckleheads. But overall, we have a good group of guys. Guys like Keisel, Ward, BB, Aaron Smith, Townsend, Colon make this team very easy to get behind. Also, all of our UFA’s make this team even more likeable. Yesterday we had, at least 10 UFA’s (Harrison, Washington, Davis, FWP, Stapleton, Anthony Madison, Reed, Bailey, Hoke, Retkofsky) playing regularly in all three phases of the game. That’s awesome. This city/fanbase has always supported underdogs…
Bottom line: Special team. Let’s hope they stay hungry, stay motivated, and stay hot…and hopefully, come February 1, 2009…they’ll be a Super team.

Unfortunately I think you're right on point 2
You could add Harbaugh of the Ravens to the mix as well. Steeler coaches don’t do well with COTY. But that shouldn’t keep us from recognizing. Pittsburgh media is beginning to make some noise in this direction now. The other candidates are rightfully being acknowledged for doing more than was reasonably expected. But when you consider our strength of schedule, injury situation, team shortcomings and the way that we have been winning (usually coming from behind to win late) we’re talking a lot more than sending talent on the field and yelling ‘Sic ’em!’

Last Offensive Holding Against the Steelers D
I’ve seen this on BTSC a couple of times, but can we confirm once more. . . when was the last holding called on an opposing offense against the Steelers D? I’ve seen 23 quarters. Can we confirm? Is this ANY holding, or only in pass protection? I know a couple people on here have already figured this out. I find it to be a very interesting statistic

How bout that choke hold Adam Terry
(big left tackle, I think that’s his name) put on Harrison in the 4th on Sunday!!! Harrison had him beat around the corner, and Terry threw his huge old arm up around Harrison’s neck, and put him in a sideways headlock. Right in front of Flacco and a ref. Yet, no holding was called (of course) and Flacco completed the pass for about 20 yards.
It’s getting ridiculous. Leading the NFL in sacks, and no holding calls in 5+ games.

Add next to nothing to the conversation.
Why dont you go about explaining to me how 11-4 against that record is a poor job. Seriously, until you can even attempt at doing so, your screams of ‘this team sucks’ ring very hollow. Good luck brother! You’re not going to get very far, but seriously, give it a crack. You’re apparently a life long fan, so surely you can tell a story of why the team deserves your big picture ridicule.

Are you yawning at me or Mr. "you my friend"???
Hey, it’s okay to disagree with me. I am a loyal Steelers fan, believe it or not, and I do think they should be commended for their record this season, playing what has been noted as the toughest regular season schedule in over 30 years. I’m also saying, however, that the idea that Big Ben is earning his money is a joke. You want facts… okay, let’s talk touchdowns (17) versus interceptions (14)…MVP numbers you say??? Unfortunately, I can’t find the statistics on how many times he’s fumbled the ball while in the pocket. Oh, and those 46 sacks and counting that he has taken, I’d blame the O-Line for half of them; the other half is the idiot not knowing when to scramble out of the pocket, which I believe he is actually the best in the league right now at doing, which is why I call him an idiot for not using his natural athletic gifts, or with his size and speed, tucking and running “smartly”, i.e. getting his head down and sliding, for first downs.
As far as Tomlin, I think he is a good coach, but I also think he has has a lot of talent to work with even on offense, so my beef with him is that he is allowing this foolishness on offense to continue. A good coach, in my humble opinion, knows how to make adjustments when it is obvious what he is doing isn’t working. He has the perfect mentor right on his staff, Dick Lebeau, to teach him how to make adjustments. Lebeau makes adjustments on defense just about as good as anybody..in fact, he rarely has to make adjustments, because he usually make the right call the first time..

Just tired
Although Ben isn’t putting up the numbers he’s paid to put up, he has some unbelievable wins this season. Tomlin can’t become coach of the year soley on the fact that 3 or more franchises have had record turn arounds with new head coaches. But. Don’t come here and tell us that it’s a joke to think of the Steelers in the super bowl. They’ve been tested as much as any team this year, if not more. Some of us get a little annoyed with the pessimism thrown around here. Don’t take it personally. I’ll get some shut eye and they’ll get one for the other thumb ;)

I can't stand
Fans like you. You blowing my high don’t bother me dude!!
But for real like I have pointed out in the other post (ben HOF), its too early to judge Ben yet. Its only his 5th season and well there are a lot of good things about the 5 years there are a lot of bad things. But l clearly showed how peyton manning was as good or worse than ben in his first 4-5 years. Fact is Peyton only started to separate himself as an elite passer in his sixth year. In the 7th year was the record year. So give this man a line next year and lets see what he can do. Until then lay off, no he didn’t put up MVP numbers this year but last year numbers was pretty nice.
As for Tomlin he has nothing to do with the Offense, he is a defensive coach genius. BA is suppose to handle the offense which is why he needs to go and we need to run the no-huddle all playoffs.
So next time you get down – look at things from a level headed lens. It’ll help you sleep better.
Also if Ben doesn’t turn the ball over, we are in the super bowl and then anything can happen but my money is on that ben plays better in the SB than he did last time.
