Steelers Snubbed By Pro-Bowl
I said in a post on Sunday that if Aaron Smith was not named to the Pro Bowl, I would do my best not to mention it on my site in the future. It will come up, but basically, it's a sham. This about sums up my thoughts on the snubbing and what I'd like to do to the whole 'process' of recognizing the most deserving players around the league:
Congratulations to James Farrior, Troy Polamalu and James Harrison on their nominations. We'll move on from this subject, but I guess this kind of sums it up what the Pro Bowl truly means in the grand scheme of team success: the Arizona Cardinals have 5 Pro Bowlers. We have 3.
Comments
well, its hard to replace some guys that are already on the list but....
We have the #1 D, perhaps the best we’ve seen in awhile, if not ever. Yet we only get 3 guys from it, thats a crime.
Aaron Smith, Lamarr Woodley, Hines Ward, and Ike Taylor, in my opinion were all deserving of it.
Ryan Clark, Casey Hampton, Big Ben, Jeff Reed, Justin Hartwig (yes I said it, an O-lineman from our team), and Anthony Madison could have been on there as well, but weren’t as deserving perhaps.
Whats up with the roster anyway? Isn’t that like on 42 people or soemthing? Isn’t a team suppose to be 53? I don’t pay too much attention to the pro-bowl rosters but shouldn’t there be more people on it?
Heres my biggest gripes:
1. Farve in over Rivers; I don’t like either of these players all that much but Rivers had a good year and all Farve does is toss it straight up in the air.
2. Ronnie Brown over Steve Slaton; Brown benefited from the Wildcat here. I think more of his numbers (which aren’t as good as Slaton’s anyway) were a result of the formation rather than his ability, though he is good.
3. Already mentioned this but how come theres not even a full roster there? I mean its only got 3 corners and one FS…….

Never in a million years thought I’d hear the name Bill Lambeer on BTSC. Very nice :) I can’t say I disagree – we’re playing our own brandy of nasty (and oftentimes ugly) football.

don't worry Blitz
Fan voting is only 1/3 of the final vote for the roster. Hopefully, the players and coaches have more respect for great players like Smith, Ike, and Woodley. It would be a real shame if Smith didn’t make the Pro Bowl though. The guy is a beast, and he clogs up the line for guys like Farrior, Polamalu, and Woodley to make plays on the left side. It would be really cool to see him make the pro bowl with all the stuff he has had going on with his son. It sucks to see guys like Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney make the PB just on their sacks totals, instead of their overall play at the DE position. The Colts get 2 DEs on the PB roster, yet they are 25th in the league in run defense. It’s a joke. But all that aside, congrats to Harrison, Farrior, and Polamalu; they all deserve to be there. And on a side note, I was happy to see Chris Hope make the roster. Always loved the way he played.

The Way I Like It
I understand the advantages to the players that are lost by the balloting outcome. However, as a fan this is exactly the way I like it. Karma that was destroyed by the donning of the “Division Champs” caps is restored by the snubs. This should help them stay hungry even though they appear not to be overconfident now or prone to it.

Other Snubs
I personally think that Brett Favre getting into the Pro Bowl is just ridiculous…. Phillip Rivers played waaaaay better and shoulda gone for him. Slaton also had an amazing year and yet was somehow snubbed.
Just goes to show you that sometimes the Pro Bowl is more of a popularity contest instead of an actual recognition of how talented a player is. Really disappointed when i saw that only 3 of our players made it to the pro bowl. I definitely think many more deserve the trip to Hawaii (Woodley, A. Smith, and hey, how about Jeff Reed kicking as well as he has in such a windy stadium like Heinz Field!), but maybe we’re better off having such good players under the radar…

I'm sure the team isn't too worried about snubs...
They’d much rather be in Tampa Bay in early Feb than Honolulu.
I agree that we had some guys getted snubbed, but we say that because we’re fans of them. Aaron Smith for instance (probably my favorite player) just doesn’t have the stats that other DE’s have in the AFC, which is the biggest factor when voting for defensive lineman. It’s unfortunate for a guy like Smith is the heart and sole of the front seven, and probably the hardest worker on the d…but we all know how good he, and the other snubs are…and they know how much the Nation appreciates them.

Only Pro Bowl Wish
My only Pro Bowl wish is that Mike Tomlin is not coaching the AFC squad in Hawaii. As a regular attendee of this All Star Game I can tell you the only distasteful thing about partying at the beach side Dukes Canoe Club all weekend prior to the tailgating in a #43, is seeing Bill Cowher repeatedly coach the AFC. For those that don’t know, the losing coaches in the AFC and NFC Conference Championships are the respective coaches in Hawaii.
This Steelers team cares not for Pro Bowl berths. This team cares for starting a ring collection for the other hand. This team loves to play with a chip on it’s shoulder feeling snubbed. And in essence this is a true Team, not a team of superstars like the Cowboys, Pats* or Colts. The cold hard truth is that the initial Pro Bowl picks in mid December has about the number of Steelers that are having seasons worthy. Save Ben, no offensive players really deserve it. The rest of the defenders that got dissed are really Team players not superstars (save Woodley who isn’t known yet)
If the Team players are truly Pro Bowl worthy then the Steelers will resiliently overcome all obstacles between now and February. Sometime after Springsteen’s halftime performance they should be crowned Champions. Then, due to never ending surgeries, injuries etc that will occur between now and then several other deserving Steelers will be added to the Pro Bowl roster. Mahalo!

* <= that's my favorite part of 50's posts
every time Brady*, Billicheat*, Rodney Harrison*, Massachesettes*, Moss*, England*. New*, or New England* is mentioned…it’s always followed by a *. and it STILL makes me laugh.
and i completely agree. we have a superstar in Ben (who’s having a statistically down year) and Troy, and superstars in the making in Harrison/Woodley…other than that, we have Team guys…but arguably some of the best Team guys in the NFL.
thanks 50.

BB year may be statistically down,
but he’s racking up the career 4th quarter game winnning or tying drives (17) and is on pace, btw, to set the all -time record in this category. John Elway had 47 in 16 seasons.

This annoys me.
I understand why we did`t have any players on offense, but having one of the best defenses EVER only to produce 3 pro bowlers? I can see why Ike did`t make it. He would have been in 3 by now if he did`t have brick hands. He is one of the best corners in the league but unless you have interceptions your not getting in. Same goes for sacks. Ware could have 10 tackles on the year, but as long as they are sacks he gets in. Makes me sick. The only players that got snubbed completely are Aaron Smith and Woodley. Suggs over Woodley? Comon man. Smith gets screwed because of the position he plays. Not really a DE or a DT.

They picked that CB from Oakland
With the unspellable last name, and he hasn’t had a lot of INTs, but that is because people don’t throw his way, on the flip side, people do throw Ike’s way, and it has resulted in only two touchdowns (almost three Randy Moss), and both of those TDs were amazingly good grabs by two of the top recievers in football, TO and Reggie Wayne, plus Ike had his hands on both of those balls, just couldn’t intercept them ofr knock it away. . Ike Defends a hell of a lot of passes (compared to guys like Bailey), and I think come next year the coaches and players will make the difference for Ike.

Pro Bowl
We have 3+; our own plus 5 former Steelers we couldn’t or didn’t keep for one reason or another. It’s not the same. When my son asked me who I thought would be on the pro Bowl team I thought Troy, Casey, James, LaMarr, and Aaron. Everyone else has been playing good, but not stellar football—particularly the offense.
Interesting that the 1st Amendment applies to gratuitous swearing, but not using all caps [particularly when used to indicate extreme displeasure at the picks].

After seeing Casey Hampton react to a bs call against him in the Patriots game, I think any snubbing or disrespect of Big Snack only helps the Steelers.

One big thing to look at is contract Money
If Bmac played healthy all year, and paced for the deflections, tackles, and most importantly INTS, he may have made the Pro-bowl. Thank goodness he didn’t, we can afford to resign him to be that pro-bowl caliber guy he could have been this year had he stayed healthy.
Aaron Smith has two years left on his contract, and even though he’s up there in age, keeping him under the radar, and keeping him embroilled in “team”, will likely get a nice hometown discount come 2011, ala Farrior this year.
I would have liked to have seen Kenyaron Fox make it as a Special teamer. He was awesome this year, and he’s under contract for 3 years I believe (correct me if I’m wrong).
Jeff Reed was flat out snubbed, So was woodley, name another AFC OLB outside Peezy and Deebo, that has as many combined sacks, INTS, FF, FR and DTD as Woodley. You can’t I looked. That’s fine…. There’s another guy who, if snubbed again or injuered will be cheaper to resign when his rookie contract is up.
Also I wouldn’t want to be Kerry Collins this week when Woodley, Big Snack and Aaron Smith are coming after him. Titans may have to play in the playoffs with Vince Young.

That vid is awesome. The main 2 snubs were Taylor and Smith. Taylor was a marginal candidate, but so was Revis, who has the benefit of being a first rounder. At least Asomugha got to go. Smith’s a guy that should have gone, but obviously doesn’t get the credit he deserves. I have to think he deserved it more than BOTH Indy DE’s (since their D is so great), but oh well. Woodley had a great year, but hasn’t kept pace with the other sack leaders and Suggs really has had an outstanding year. I don’t fault that selection.
On offense, Ben’s the only guy who should even be in the picture. Obviously Peyton deserves the start. Favre is a joke, but Rivers and Pennington are bigger snubs than Ben, I’d say.

Prowbowl?...Prowbowl?
The rest of the league can send all the players they want to the prowbowl, Pittsburgh players, all of them, have a date with a different game.
The Steelers are continually having to fight for their due. Whether it be holding calls not called, phantom fines assigned, the leagues toughest schedule, or some of their fine players being snubbed for the probowl, The Steelers have to claw for every ounce of recognition they get. They get that recognition by winning. That can’t be denied.

Irrelevant
Pro Bowl voting, it seems to me, is problematic because it focuses on easily quantifiable stats (sacks, interceptions, etc.) rather than effectiveness. This is because that subtler analysis cannot be done easily or from afar. It is also problematic since some voters are swayed by reputations built on prior seasons rather than current-year impact. The award is a bit of a trailing indicator. All of these things helped guys like Freeney while hurting guys like Smith.
But this is irrelevant to a team that keeps track of SB trophies not Pro Bowl selections. I doubt they will lose much sleep over it, other than perhaps to motivate the team to prove those voters wrong. And remember that the dilution of success amongst more players makes the overall team stronger even as it weakens individuals’ candidacy for the Pro Bowl. I mean, the Steelers’ defense is so epic largely because the squad does not rely on stars—everyone is a star—so individual stats are not gaudy (e.g., Porter would not have as many sacks if he was still in the ‘burgh). This is the team’s strength, just as it was for the ‘03 and ’04 Pats, who didn’t have the most Pro Bowlers in either year but were the best team at the right time that year…and hoisted the SB trophy. Fans should be happy since strong teams are better than strong stars—just ask this year’s Cowboy fans about the virtues of having prominent stars on their team (and I don’t mean on their helmets or 50-yd line!).

the pro bowl is a joke
Look how many times Warren Sapp got in at the end of his career. It’s 90% name recognition. Once in a while, players like the Oak CB make it, but for the most part, its all name. Even Troy’s gotten in on the strength of his rep. I love Favre, but really??? Of course, the NY Bretts have been the darling of the media anyway all year, remember when they beat the Titans? I kid you not, two different commentators on crapspn proclaimed them the best team in the AFC. Please.
All that said, it is still a slap in the face that Smith and Woodley didn’t get in. I can see Hampton not making it, but Smith is a game changer. It is truly amazing that 7 Cardinals have made it in.
And how the hell does Slaton not make it in???

Kinda like All-Star Games...
…often it takes some time to build up your reputation, then the following year, people WATCH to see what kind of year you are having. I think this is what happened to Aaron this year. It would have been great to be in this year, with all of his family struggles AND his awesome dedication and performance on the field.
Keep in mind that players like him are often named later, due to injuries, etc… so we’ll have to wait and see.

It's a function of..
Team success ENTIRELY due to the defense, which is almost ENTIRELY dependant on the craftiness of Dick LeBeau. No one on the offense deserves a spot, and the players on the defense are interchangable for the most part in Lebeau’s schemes.
