Just Another Game...Not!
I'm late to the party so my emphasis in this post is perspective. There is much truth in the notion that every game is important, that this game is no more important than the last one (Bengals) or the next one (Cowboys). The reality is that some games simply carry more weight than others because of circumstances that extend beyond the dynamics of one season.
So lets get real. How many of us marked this game down as a loss on our schedules? Or even as a toss up after players such as Brady and Harrison went down? The reality is that these are the Pats, Steeler Kryptonite for most of the decade. No matter how well the team played to this point of the season many in the Nation were not going to completely give their hearts to this edition of the team until they saw how they measured up against NE. Now with this unexpected and unexpectedly impressive win folks are openly talking playoffs and even Super Bowl without feeling that they haven't just walked under a ladder or crossed paths with a black cat. The fear, largely unspoken was that the Pats were just better on some deep institutional level. Props should be given to Joey Porter who during the course of an ESPN interview a week ago brought up the politically incorrect issue of the Pats cheating, and his breaking the ranks from other members of the Steeler family who refused to acknowledge any negative impact resulting from said cheating. Also props to a minority of folks (myself included) who predicted months ago that the Pats window of opportunity would close this year (not accomplished yet, I know, but close). Some will say that this is all a matter of Brady being injured. Well, Brady doesn't play defense.
'Now wait just one minute', I hear many of you saying. 'We are not out of the woods yet'. Quite right. We won't be out of the woods this year until the last dog dies. Indeed, it is still plausible that we might not make the playoffs at all. But, speaking frankly, yes our schedule is unforgiving, but of the final four regular season opponents is there anyone whom you are frightened of playing? I mean just plain scared. The Cowboys? Are you kidding? They certainly are capable of beating us if we underperform, but I would be annoyed and angry with the Steelers for letting those punks beat them at Heinz with so much at stake. The Titans are tough and respectable. The Browns? No, just one team scares me of our remaining opponents, the Ravens. Even if we blow them out, Ray-Ray and company could do enough physical damage to this squad that we are unable to make it through the playoffs. IMO three teams scare Steelers fans. the Pats, the Jags and the Ravens. What we must be concerned about is a loss of focus in this last month. Unlikely given the championship pedigree, but still a concern.
Specific points to celebrate and feel encouraged about.
1. No injuries. Unless I missed something this is the first week this year where we didn't record a new injury or a setback. If we can put the injury bug behind us then our prospects look absolutely great.
2. BA called a good game. Nice balanced play calling. Even better, the use of personnel, particularly, the running backs was excellent. The no huddle was used to good effect. We don't need much more in the way of offense in order to succeed.
3. As Maryrose pointed out so concisely, The play of the Offensive Line was better than adequate. Perhaps Ben and the boys need to go to Chicago more often.
4. The defense is really THAT good. They are at least as good as the Lloyd, Greene, Woodson, Lake, outfits in the 90's. I would only consider the '76 group as better. Troy and Deebo are having All Pro caliber seasons. Everyone it seems is having an extraordinary year. There seems no sign of let up or vulnerability. Hell, with the likes of Woodley, Timmons, Gay, BMac, etc. it's fair to say that this unit hasn't really peaked yet.
5.I don't get heartburn anymore when STs takes the field. And we are actually starting to get some quality kickoff and punt returns.
6.Consider the Steelers 'discovered'. If you haven't noticed the Steelers are now the 'hot' team among the sports punditry and experts. That should only increase if they manage to expose the dinged Cowboys as the pretenders that they are.
7.Reality? Win the next two games and a playoff spot is assured. Win three of four and they earn a much needed bye as well as early home field advantage. With the best defense in the League, great offensive talent, a steady coaching staff and organizational support, It is not inappropriate to start nurturing Super Bowl fantasies. Beat the Girls and drive a stake into the hearts of the Ravens and we can start planning for the playoffs.

Playoffs Clinched This Week?
I am one of those guys that would not truly believe that this team could go all the way until they beat NE. Brady or not, the win cemented my belief that the Steelers are for real. While I disagree that BA called a good game and can go on and on about some questionable play calls at questionable times (abandoning the run on the 4th quarter missed FG drive stopping the clock) and a lack of creativity inside the 10, I agree with all your other points. The teams that scared me were NE and Baltimore. I now feel we can go into Baltimore and win.
By the way, the Steelers can actually clinch a playoff spot with a win this weekend! See link below.

When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
playoffs
I saw that too, but then saw NE plays Seattle & Miami plays Buffalo … so I don’t think Pgh. clinches anything until the following week when they beat Baltimore. Not a given, but I speak with faith that though Flacco has been incredibly impressive (why the $#@! did Pitt let him go!), he can’t handle Pgh’s 2-headed sack-attack.
1+...
I may be in the minority, but I for one am not worried about Baltimore. I know that we gotta bring our A game against them, and I respect them, but fear them, Nah! “F” Bmore!
Were in good shape
Injury wise this is the best we’ve been since opening day. I mean obviously Smith and Simmons are still gone, but we’ve managed. Our line looks better in the last few weeks.
Early this year I said I’d be really impressed if we pulled off 11-5, and I stuck to that number. at this point I can see 12-4 being real.
This team CAN shut down anybody, the only real factor is keeping the offense from handing the game away.
If ben throws no INT’s the rest of the year, we have a 6th ring. Its that simple really. I truly think if he can “manage the game” and just make some plays when needed, we wont ever have another loss this year.
+10
I personally think all the injuries we’ve endured throughout the year will help us down the stretch! For one, it’s helped us develop tremendous depth all positions and brought our team closer together! It also has to go along way with confidence to know that we can be sitting where we are record wise without ever being at full strength at any point other than opening day.
I also see the loss of Simmons as addition by subtraction! If we can get a healthy Marvel back by playoff time and keep the rest of the team injury free, we could win the whole damn thing!
finally i see some FAITH!
i have been thinking and telling my friends this since the loss at the Giants. We beat ourselves and showed how good we are even when we beat ourselves, only losing by 7. I agree with about everything on this schedule. I really do not see us losing to any team this year if Ben doesn’t throw anymore interceptions. It is just too hard to score on us especially if we don’t give you the ball. We can average 20 pts/game or less and win with a D like this!
I really am not worried about Baltimore other than them trying to hurt our players. I know we will win but it seems as if lately they would rather hurt a player or two than win the game. After their loss to us earlier in the season Ray was basically bragging about how he hurt Mendenhall and then they were trying to put money for Hines’ head. If it was only a joke or playful then why would you say it on a radio show? Isn’t there suppose to be a difference between the locker room and the nation wide media? Either way Suggs is an idiot for saying that.

Oh come now
Your team lost in that overtime but if i go to your boards all i see is how the Steelers are way over rated and that the Ravens will win. So i hope your telling your team the same thing because no matter how long it took to be decided we still won.
Plus,
Didn’t Baltimore have the ball first in OT??
that is a very relevant irrelevant fact...
anyway… i dont talk trash about the steelers… unless its general trash talking in a rival franchise sort of way. But I definitely respect your team

you almost made me forget my point
saying “i really am not worried” doesnt seem realistic if a team that was struggling in week 3 took you to overtime, when your franchise is practically undefeated on MNF, and now that team (ravens incase i lost you there) has a top 10 ranked scoring offense, and still the number 2 defense. I think saying your not worried is BS.

You're not missing anything, RickVa
Tomlin said himself in the press conference this week that this was maybe the best game of the season in terms of injuries. Kirschke had some back spasms I believe. Harrison’s injury seems to have been short lived but we’ll see. Speaking of Tomlin, he’s the one I really chalk this win up to thinking back on it. We played well in every phase of the game. Every player came amped. We were the more violent team. Tomlin is quietly instilling the backbone in this team to succeed in daunting situations. I have still have my reservations about his ability to evaluate personnel, but I have started to take a real liking to his no-nonsense attitude, razor sharp focus, and fundamental vision of how to play football.
Rick
You hit on all the cylinders. We are capable. We need to keep getting healthy and keep improving cohesion. I too find it difficult to temper my optimism with caution.

Rick,
good post and it appears you’ve cover every base. The on;t thing that people are missing is that you still have to go out and play the game. This is football and any given sunday you must get out there and kick some tail just like in the New england game.
All these stats I’m seeing and these rankings and such dont mean poop.
As for Big Ben. Come on people lets give this situation more time before we start forgetting about his mistake laden tendencies. I love him to death too. But like some of the great NBA shooters. They can shoot you in, and they can shoot you out.
Big test for the O-line who I do believe can get the job done come sunday. But, all in all its going to come down to Ben. Go Steelers!
I wouldn't take another QB
but your’e right about his tenancies…lately they’ve been improving and I’m optimistic that his play, the O-line, the running game, and Brucie are all on the baby-step way to being much much improved.
Saying that though…if not for that interception he threw to Vrabel the final score probably winds up 33-3.
Have faith that offense is on its way back to excellence.
