Cowher News
I'm surprised no one caught this when it came out, nearly a month ago. It appears as though the Cleveland Browns have officially begun courting Bill Cowher.
My only question is the credibility of this report. MSNBC cited profootballtalk.com as the primary source of this news, and profootballtalk has been wrong in the past. However, I would have to think this has some sort of substance, because both Yahoo and MSNBC are pretty important news outlets.
And take this for what this is worth, but I heard from someone (an average Joe Browns fan) last week Cowher has bought a house in Strongsville, a suburb of Cleveland. Kinda makes you wonder...

nice
I think it will happen. Browns are going to essentially go ‘all in’ trying to get Cowher to steer the ship. The money will be enormous. Looks like Zorn might be safe for one more year too in DC.

Still
don’t see it. If he comes back this year, I think it will be Philly or KC.

fwiw though
I did write about this a month ago. I guess the chase is now officially on though. We’ll see what happens. Won’t be too long (1-2 months tops) though before vacancies are filled.

110% agree
This won’t take long. As a Steeler and Cowher fan, I hope he can look pass the money, but if they give him 10M and full power..I don’t see how he passes that up. Personally I think in the long run this would end up bad for the Browns, I do not believe in a coach/GM. I also don’t think Cowher can run both roles.
All will play out in a few months, I personally hope Cowher can turn down the cash for a real job. Maybe I am a sucker for the on air act, but I still believe Cowhoer loves the Steelers and the Rooney’s to go to the Browns

The Browns may be asking...
…but it doesn’t say anything about Cowher being interested. The guy is going to get plenty of dough wherever he goes. Why would he want to go to Cleveland?
by Steelin on Dec 22, 2008 9:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Because the Cleveland job is a great job
No place to go but up…You can only be a hero…those fans, along with Pittsburgh and Green Bay, are the best in the world…Those people are so starved Cowher would be the most prestigious man in town before his plane put down the landing wheels.

Thanks maryrose.
FWIW, I don’t want Cowher for one simple reason: no coach has ever won a Superbowl with two different teams. Our next hire should be based on who can take us there.

What about Schottenwhatsit?
ESPN said last month that he was the one being courted . . . and did you see Cowher get livid about the Terrible Towel Stomp after the game?? I just don’t see him coaching the Brownies. Marty makes more sense.

Check this out
This article alludes to Marty being the GM and Cowher the coach. Crazy scenario. Surprised no one has mentioned the Cowboys as a possible destination for Cowher. I think Jerry Jones is rumored to be talking a number close to $10M. I will vomit if he goes to either.

NO WAY!!
Cowher goes to Dallas!!! I will bet my home on it!!!! Jerry Jones doesn’t have enough money to pay Cowher. Cowher knows damn well how things would work in Dallas. He knows how lucky he was working for the Rooneys and the Rooneys let him do his job. Do you really think Cowher would work with a meddlesome jerk like Jerry Jones and not blow up??!!! Although it would be good theater. T.O. would definately get cut as well as half that god forsaken team of thugs, gangbangers and misfits.

Chris Mortenson on ESPN lastnight said that Jerry Jones is almost 100% confident that Wade Phillips will be back. He cited Jerry’s reason as being the uncertain economic future of the US, and the possibility of the Labor Strike in 2010.
Basicially the economic crisis is even hitting Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, he doesn’t want to pay a millions of dollars to buy out Wade Phillips and also doesn’t want to pay an Overpriced Big Name coach to coach a bunch of player who may be on strike in a couple of years.

Hmm
Thats a lot of money. Its no secret they have been courting him but I don’t know if I see it happening.
Its obvious that he still love the Steelers, I mean, did you see him react to the Titans stomping on the terrible towel? He was pissed.
Secondly, that John Clayton guy of ESPN said that Cowher probably isn’t going to do it because he wouldn’t want to coach against the Steelers like that.
However, if that rumor about the house in Cleveland is true then hes taking the job without a doubt. It’ll be a shame though.

Mort
Doesn’t believe Cowher will take the job. It really doesn’t make sense. He said he respects the Rooneys too much and doesn’t want his legacy in his hometown tarnished. He is enjoying the role in tv better nowadays. I don’t know if Cowher would take the job. He seems like the type of guy that if he does something he puts everything in it. I don’t know he could put his whole heart into the Cleveland job. If he does take the Coach/GM job he’ll be a miserable failure. He has lost his edge and that jaw is more malleable. Can anybody REALLY see him getting all passioned up and spitting in people’s face anymore?? Look at him!! He is civilized now for pete’s sake!!!

You know that Cowher played in Cleveland and started his coaching career there before he was ever a Steeler, right?
by kwoog on Dec 23, 2008 12:40 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So what.
There are things I have done in my life that I am embarassed about too. Also, there is no truth to the rumor that he bought a house in Strongsville. Anyone ever been to Strongsville? It’s nice, but with the kind of $$$ he has and will get, I highly doubt tha would be the place he would choose Consider thiis rumor a Clowns fans wishful thinking.

The Strongsville rumor was debunked about 2 months ago, and covered widely on the SBN sister site, Dawgs By Nature.
The Browns have a long and rich tradition of success, as well as a fan base that is as passionate as any other. Cowher certainly knows this, and is definitely not embarrassed by his time spent in Cleveland.
Again, I don’t want him anymore than you guys want him to come here.

no worries kwoog
First of all welcome back. Haven’t seen much of you this season.
I don’t see Cowher taking the Browns position for other reasons. Not that he’d be ashamed which is silly to think. But more that he’s always worked best with a strong personel manager in place. I don’t think he’d trust Savage, and I don’t think he’d want “total control”.
My guess is he sits pretty at CBS until the Carolina job opens up.
by Chicago Steeler on Dec 23, 2008 4:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Can you blame me for not being around?! ha
Interesting. The talk I’ve heard is that he would only come in if he also had total control, which few Browns fan wants to give him. If he’d work with Savage in more of a partner role (say, Savage no longer picks the final 53), I wouldn’t be upset if we gave him his 10 million.
But in the end, I want to find “our Tomlin.” God it kills me to say that. You’re gonna have 3 coaches total in 50 years!
As an aside, can you believe they played football here (Chicago) last night? I was freezing in the bar, let alone outside. I’m actually surprised no one got frostbite. Can’t imagine hitting in that…

Seriously
I was at the game 4 years ago against the Falcons that had been the coldest to date. It was ridiculous. I couldn’t feel my legs for days afterward. That game was incredible in that the beer froze in the taps!

While Mr. Rooney doesn't expect Cowher
to be beholden to the steelers, the fact is that Cowher still might feel that way. He interviewed for the Browns twice and was turned down twice already. It was Mr. Rooney who gave the young coach a chance.

No offense intended Kwoog
regarding being embarassed, it was tongue in cheek. But I would certainly have to disagree with the long and rich tradition of success statement. They were consistent winners in the 50’s and 60’s, but that organization has since moved to Baltimore. The current Browns are an organization rich in name only, with little tradition of doing anything but looking for another coach to right a sinking ship. There is no denying that the fan base in passionate, and that the team has made some great draft choices talent wise recently. Maybe that, coupled with a lot of money would be enough for Cowher, but again, I doubt it. Especially considering how great he has it now….he’s the one everybody wants…his stock is up. I just think he’ll hold out one more year at least, and then decide.

And the 80’s, and no, the only thing in Baltimore is the Ravens. It’s really that simple.
by kwoog on Dec 24, 2008 1:37 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yep
I almost forgot about the 80’s. But who could forget the drive and the fumble. My step dad was beside himself. He didn’t talk to me for days!!!! My point is that the recent history of the Browns (since their reincarnation) is not good and reads more like an expose of “how not to do things in the NFL” rather than one of tradition and history. Whatever the cause, I feel that it has lessened the intesnsity of the rivalry, and it’s no fun to really hate the Browns anymore. Ok, not as much fun….and isn’t it supposed to be fun?

What do you do his first game back in the 'Burgh?
You are in the stands. There is bad call on the field that goes against the Browns. The Chin comes out, spittle flying everywhere! Do you boo him? Do you cheer that the Chin is finally back? Or like me, probably, do you just sit there in a quandary?

Cowher to Jets
I’m sure that will work out much better for the Jets than when we let them have O’Donnell.

How bout...
“Bill Cowher – Director of Football Operations, Pittsburgh Steelers.”
That would be sweet. Keep Coach in the Black & Gold, while keeping Tomlin on the sidelines.

I don’t see Cowher as the kind of front office guy that would leave Coach Tomlin alone at the proper times.

He ain't going anywhere for another year at least
Here is the story in NC. Bill plays golf at a very prestegious country club here, North Ridge Country Club. Apparently, he had an eye on a house on the green that was not up for sale. Knocked on the dude’s house and offered him a load of cash for the house. Next thing you know, he is tearing down that house and is building a new house on the course.
I can’t see him going anywhere based on that type of investment

Not Even for 10 Mil???

He is not an offensive guy; he has always coached defense. It would be a disaster to have him coaching the offense.

Chicago - Hmm??
I hadn’t thought of it but that makes more sense than any team so far. Think of it:
One of the “original 6” NFL teams with tons of history.
Working class town and fan base similar to Pittsburgh.
NFC team – no direct competition with the Steelers.
Good Defense and place were defense is appreciated.
Team in need of a new Sheriff who has guts to kick out the dead weight ie: all QBs !!
Team that doesn’t require 5 years to make into a contender.
I don’t think it will happen but it would be a pretty good fit. I would imagine the TV gig, the money, the comfort is too much to give away for the grind required. But if he is coming back it will be 2009 or 2010. After that I think he’s done for good. His name recognition and “hot coach” status can only wane as time goes on. Plus, he won’t be an attractive TV guy for much longer…. he doesn’t really have that flair for the dramatic required of the talking heads. He knows it’s all bullshit and isn’t his style.

My feelings
Personally, I dont see him going anywhere this year. He is probably just rustling the coals in the fireplace. Warming things up so to speak.
Next year, he puts the wood on the fire, makes bank, and starts digging a team out of the ground.
Personally I could see the Chiefs or Chargers being an option. But I think the Chargers wont drop their HC even though I think they should
