Merry Christmas To BTSC Readers

The following is from the sagacious steeler lifer, who mysteriously showed up one day on BTSC, and wow'ed us for the next 6 months or so with his extensive historical knowledge of the game, both in the United States, and in Canada. He also was one of the main centerpieces of BTSC's draft coverage last year. He vanished though for quite some time, so I was quite pleased to hear from him this evening via email. All seems well down in the Caribbean. Cheers to that and hopefully we'll see him around more this offseason. By the way, be sure to check the link contained within his post - they link to his views on Arians about this time last year. - Blitz-

It's Christmas Eve here in the Caribbean and I'd like to pass along holiday greetings to all of those on this site, especially the guys in the engine room such as Blitz and Maryrose and the regular contributors, old and new. It's still the best place to get rational, intelligent analysis of the Steelers.   Like most on this site, I've been hugely entertained by the 2008 season. I'm actually pretty confident of getting to the Super Bowl. Tomlin's effect on the secondary, the play of Woodley and Timmons and Troy's resurgence has turned this defense into one that can win a championship so long as the offense doesn't create a too big a negative point swing in points thrown away and points given to the opponent (such as in Tennessee).   This season has only added to the confidence I have in Tomlin. The team has improved since last season. There is more depth at all positions (except O-line). The players have met the challenge of an imposing schedule and clearly are motivated. This is a good team and will be better next year, too, when Mendenhall and Sweed start making a contribution and Timmons' playing time doubles. The offensive line will be upgraded in free agency and the draft.   Tomlin's major challenge is working with the guy just down the hall from his office, because the biggest obstacle to a championship run is the intransigence of OC Bruce Arians. As I noted a year ago in support of his firing, he simply will not adapt his X's and O's to the talent of the players that those X's and O's represent. We can talk about how poorly the offensive line performs, but there are ways to minimize those deficiencies, or adapt within games to what is and isn't working, and Arians can't do it.

We don't make Ben a moving target by plan with rollouts, naked bootlegs or moving pockets; we don't max protect at the right times; we don't no-huddle enough; we don't mix up snap counts; we don't use quick running plays; we don't have "money" plays that we can count on in crucial situations. The sure death knell of any potential scoring drive is when Ben calls a time out;  I have absolutely no confidence that the play we come out with after Ben huddles up with Arians will work. We basically do not have an offensive identity. This has been the case since Day 1 of Arians' tenure as OC.   It still amazes me that so many fans think we should run the ball more. This Steeler team cannot be a run dominant team. The o-line is mediocre (maybe even horrible) but it is clearly better at pass blocking than run blocking. Parker runs hard but he is a step slower than last year and doesn't break enough first tackles to be effective behind this group as a 20-plus carry runner. Moore should start games: He is a much better receiver than Parker, reads his blocks better and breaks more first tackle attempts. Parker would be more effective against tired defenses and still runs hard enough to carry the mail if the team is leading in the second half or if a defense is starting to break down.

The bye will be a huge benefit. We're relatively healthy, we've been in tough games against good teams and won by a variety of means. We got a slap in the face from a good but not great Tennessee team that I don't think will make it to the AFC championship game. My own prediction is that a wild card team will end up playing in Pittsburgh for a trip to the Super Bowl, and that we crush that silly Cinderella  team for a rematch with the Giants.   The other possibility is that I'm smoking too much weed tonight. On that note, I'll close by wishing everyone a safe and joyous Christmas.   Cheers

Happy Holidaze Lifer!

Great to hear from you. As always your insight is well thought out, concise and right on the mark.
Especially agree with your points on our lack of offensive identity and BA intransigence. Also the lack of certain play calls HAS been excruciatingly frustrating. Would love to see a quick hitting running play, a rolling pocket or a divergent snap count.
You are right on in regards to MT. He had a good first year and made improvements in year 2. Now let’s win a playoff game (or 3!)
Thanks and stay well in 2009!

Steeler planet story

Blitz, thank you for posting my email on the site. Now that I’m re-registered for this site I’ll try to contribute on a regular basis and even attempt to break long-winded submissions into paragraphs.

I’d like to add a little holiday story that provides further insight into the extent of Steeler nation. I live on a small island off the north (Caribbean) coast of Honduras, called Utila. It’s a squiggle of land about 7 miles long and 2 miles wide, population 5,000. History: Settled by Engllsh language pirates whose descendants remain proudly anti-establishment; Economy: Dive industry; Quality of life: sun, sand, cheap beer … and plenty of Steelers football games on cable TV.

A couple days after the Steelers beat the Cowboys, I ran into a buddy who sails a charter catamaran between the islands and mainland. We’re joined in the conversation by a mutual friend from Texas who is a diehard Cowboys fan. Of course I give him a little grief about the game, which he had watched at a local bar. He was disgusted, but not just about the result. Included among the boat captain’s passengers the day of the game had been a woman from Alaska who let it be known that the most important thing she wanted to do was find a place where she could watch her Steelers beat the Cowboys. The boat captain, a guy with a great sense of humor, took her to the bar and made sure she got a barstool right next to our Cowboys fan. She had a great time, the Cowboy fan not so much.

So the next day I am walking downtown and it crosses my mind that there is a single woman on the island who is my kind of girl: A beer drinking Steeler fan who arranges her travel plans around kickoff times and Steeler TV coverage. Ergo, I’m giving extra attention to every gringo female I don’t already know. I’m about to enter the main grocery store when, lo and behold, I see an attractive woman sitting in an outdoor patio wearing a bright yellow Steelers fleece (it’s a cool day by our standards, about 60 F). I stop, turn, go over to her table and say, “Nice fleece. We have to talk.” We make quick introductions and I ask her, “How did you like the game yesterday?” She says, “Who won?” I’m baffled. Turns out, this particular woman in a Steelers fleece was NOT the woman from Alaska who had been in the bar the day before. And, she is not single. Her husband walks out of the store, we make further introductions. It turns out they are from Pittsburgh, hard core sports fans and former Penguins season ticket holders who have now moved to my little island. The hubby was actually working in a hospital the day Ben crashed his motorcycle and he added a few more details about the seriousness of the crash and how badly Ben had been hurt. He’s convinced Ben is still affected by that crash.

Long story short, Steeler planet is alive and well. I never did find that woman from Alaska, at least not yet. Other people remember seeing her. She flits through my imagination as a siren-like phantom spreading the Steeler gospel, drinking beer and laughing at Cowboys fans. Maybe someday she will float into the bar where I work. First beer is on me.

A little more insight

on what her husband had to say about Ben’s crash. All indications of long term damage were shrugged off fairly quickly after the incident. So what did he say? Is Ben really hampered by what happened? Thanks and great post.

Merry Christmas ...

to everyone. This team could have a highly successful running game, but it must eschew the running scheme currently being attempted. Bring back the fullback or bring in a second running back who can lead the other wide, or develop some other more open style of running play. I still can’t support the assumption that Coach Arians is a man on an island running his offense in spite of any adjustments or changes ownership, management and Coach Tomlin desire. If that assumption is true, then there is a bigger problem in that o, m and CT can’t control CA. I agree with the notion that the offense must do something to help the defense win games. Hope you find that girl from Alaska.

Not the only one....

A timeout by Ben is always time for a huge sigh and groan in my house, cause you just know they’re going to run a play that the oppo defense is going to know ahead of time. I wonder what the stat is on that one this year?

Also agree on the fact that we can’t run as is, but with another OC I think we could make adjustments to that segment that would at least make it average. Plays just develop too slowly it seems and gove the D the chance to get into the backfield before the ball’s handed off.

I'd like to ...

think that doctor knew he was violating Federal law by discussing someone’s medical history with an outside party. Unless it is something that BR already released, then shame on him.

yeah

but someone knows something that we don’t. Just digging for dirt ;)
