Steelers shutout the Brownies - Postgame Thread
That was really a pretty impressive game from the Steelers. Of course, it is overshadowed by Ben Roethlisberger being carted off the field with an apparent concussion. Use this thread to discuss the game and the rest of todays games.
I'm going to post a separate fanpost for updates on Ben's condition, since I'm guessing people will be looking for quick updates on that.
Hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday season and a great new year!

Now that's how you play Steeler football!!
As one of the harshest critics of my beloved Steelers last week in their loss to the Titans (criticism that I still say was accurate), I want to be as quick to congratulate Coach Tomlin, who was one of the main targets of my criticism last week, as well as the offense, for playing a really great game against their arch rivals the Cleveland Browns. I was particularly happy to see the Steelers get back to playing Steeler football with fast Willie Parker (FWP) running well. The defense was awesome, but they have pretty much been great all year. Still, it was nice to see them have such a great game to give the team momentum going into their bye week.
I truly hope Big Ben (BB) is okay, but to those who say he should not have played, I strongly disagree. He needed the practice, and even against a less than stellar Browns defense, he still managed to throw an interception. Byron Leftwich, aka Lefty, managed the offense well, mainly by being decisive with the ball, getting the ball out of his hands, throwing catchable balls, and not throwing interceptions or taking sacks. BB can learn from Lefty on how to play QB on a team that has talent on offense and a great defense.
Lastly, while the offense played well, Bruce Arians still needs to figure out how to add some variety into the offense. They are still way too predictable. Dennis Dixon, to my disappointment, did not do well in his chance to shine, but with his speed, I still think they can work in Randle El type gadget plays using Dennis. I also think they can figure out a way to use Limas Sweed other than blocking, which he needs a lot of work on.
Again, I want to congratulate Coach Tomlin and the Steelers on a great win, and I truly believe this win, even though they had nothing to play for as far as playoff position, will serve them very well going into their bye week, their playoff run, and who knows, maybe Super Bowl 43 and Ring #6???

What a season...
No matter how you cut it, or criticize it as some do, it has been a damn good season. After seeing the Steelers schedule at the beginning of the year I considered 10 wins against stellar competition to be a good year.
The NFL is not for wussies – injuries, not matter how minor, game plan, execution, and momentum mean a W or an L, and to get 12 W’s and a second seed is a very successful regular season.
It is easy to salute LeBeau, but easier to slam Arians. But the Steelers won a number of games late in the 4th Q with an offense that was w/o Faneca, Marvel Smith, and Simmons, prime players from the line, along with a new center. I think that Stapleton has done a great job stepping in unexpectly for Simmons. FWP was hurt for a good portion of the year. Moore has played well with Mendenhall out for the year. I also believe strongly that Big Ben has been gutsy in his play with injuries.
As in 2005, it doesn’t matter what you have done in the reg season, (ask the Peetriots) you have to get into the playoffs and then peak. Injury minor, momentum strong, an enterprising game plan, and mistake free football will take you to the ring.
You gotta love it – It is the year for the Sixth…

FWP
Despite BB getting really hurt and even though this wasn’t a “great” victory or anything….I think it was a very good way to go into the playoffs.
I think today’s key was that FWP was able to get going. I think week after week he’s gotten a tiny bit stronger and faster.
Now with two weeks off he can rest up and hopefully do some serious running. If FWP shows that he can run in the divisional round, it’ll really open up the pass and THAT could be the thing that allows this team to win it’s 6th SB!!
I’d like to see more of the I-formation we saw a couple times today, plus, maybe run many more plays with FWP and MM both in the backfield. I also think the drop off pass to MM is going to kill other teams! The Steelers really need to mix it up…..a little drop off here, a FWP there, pass to miller, ward and holmes and nate! I think the weapons are ready go full throttle!!!
I sure hope BB is ok. Not just for the the team, but for his own head and career.
Let’s go Steelers!!!
Oh, and I didn’t say anything about the D because they say it themselves EVERY WEEK! They are killer and they know it! Bring the pain!!!

my post game thoughts
- first, Big Ben. I think he’ll be fine. The hit wasn’t all that bad, all the damage was done by his head hitting the ground hard. If theres anyone who can come back from any injury its Ben. He’s had worse.
- FWP, take out that big TD run (though it was no gimmie, good run by him) and Parker had a pretty poor first half. However, the second half was vintage Parker. He hit the hole fast and fairly strong. He made guys miss and looked full speed while doing it. I think he may now be 100%, finally.
- Congrats to Hines for setting the record. Though he only had 70 yards he had an impressive performance.
- The D looked good against everyone except Lewis. Not sure how he gained all those yards on us but when you have a nominee for Defensive Player of the Year on the sidelines I suppose your D’s gonna allow some yards. Carter had probably his best game ever.
- Its interesting how different our O is when Lefty is in there. Now, I’m not saying bench Ben or Ben sucks (we shouldn’t and he certainly doesn’t) but our O works better when Lefty is in there I believe. Our O-line blocks better (and that is what really confuses me) and Arians makes better calls, in my opinion. I don’t know why it is. Ben should remain our starter but this is simply a point of interest here………..
- Colon, I’ve grown tired of him. He knows how to kill a drive and has canceled out several TDs this season because of his grabby hands.
- BA, better play calling and I saw an increased amount of lead blocker plays which made me happy. This game had several instances where BA’s “trickier” plays (not trick plays mind you) got good yardage where as they usually get nothing at all if not negative.
- on the choice of whether or not to play the starters the whole game (give or take a few) I have to agree with Tomlin. Our offense hasn’t had a rhythm all season so you don’t pass on an opportunity to establish something against a weak D. Only time will tell if we did get something together for the playoffs but I liked the look of it.

Bruce Gradkowski
5-16 for 18 yards and 2 ints.
That’s a pass defense right there.

or just a terrible qb
But its worth noting that we went 6-0 in division play, which practically guarantee’s a division title in of itself.
I thought at the beginning of the year, we would get 12-4 or 11-5. The eagles surprised me. But all in all, I’m really impressed. Despite huge issues, we’ve shown our strengths > weaknesses.
What would a season be without a good spanking of cleveland? Just brings joy to my heart.

Tomlin was stupid...
..no other way to spin it. Not only did he play Roethlisberger TOO LONG in the game and suffer the consequences, (or at least Ben did), but he left Parker in all game as well. Along with most of the other key players on the team. Long after the Browns had lost any measure of interest they might have had going in. Long after a MEANINGLESS game was well out of reach. The little fatty, who was never more than a mediocre athlete, gets his chance to play hard ass and be a big man at the expense of others. Great.
So Ben “only suffered a concussion”. Again, great…. Not like REPEATEDLY having his neurons scrambled isn’t the main reason he has gone from being one of the most promising talents at the position in the league to a borderline liability. But hey, it’s only $100 million or so of Rooney money that they have riding on the guy. No reason to handle him with care. By this time next year Ben won’t be reading his plays off an armband any more, they will have to be diagrammed out in EXTRA LARGE PRINT, on the back of Hartwig’s jersey. Someone will be given the responsibility to make sure he doesn’t fall asleep in the huddle. Someone else will be responsible for finishing his sentances for him.

He does
but in this instance I think he is using hyperbole to make a point. BB is racking up the concussions. This is not good—both short term and long term. His ability to make good decisions has seemed to have declined. It’s hard to argue against that.. Another concussion isn’t going to help any, either.

For once not a sarcastic response
I don’t recall, other than the motorcycle accident, when else he has had a concussion. He has certainly been banged around, but I am really trying to remember what other instances is causing you to demise he is ’racking up the concussions".

Yes, ty.
In October, ‘06, just 4 months after sustaining a severe concussion in the accident. It was a helmet to helmet hit. Remember? Cowher played him the next week against the lowly Raiders and we lost . We finished with an 8-8 record, missing the playoffs by just one game. So that makes 3 in 3 1/2 years. I would say that’s racking them up. Plus. with his style of play, there is nothing to suggest we won’t be seeing more.

That hit...
…could have easily happened on the very first play. Would it have been ridiculous to let BB play the first half? Cuz that hit happened during the first half. We we’re not up 31 points when it happened.
I tend to agree that we could have pulled FWP earlier, but Parker hasn’t been playing well. There are many potential reasons, but one very likely one is the fact that he’s missed practices and hasn’t had nearly enough game time. So, look at the options.
1. Keep him safe, healthy, unpracticed, disgruntled, and just as ineffective as he’s been since coming back from injury.
2. Risk him getting hurt, but get him some practice, some game time, some confidence, and bring him into the post season with a little swagger.
As observers with no access to what’s going on behind the scenes, I don’t think any of us are qualified to make the call. But I can understand both sides of the issue.

It’s a matter of hindsight and just bad luck.

It helps when you have very competent backups for QB and for RB. Lets face it, we aren’t going to win the superbowl with our offense this year. If we win the superbowl, it will be with by far the worst offense DVOA and yardage wise ever – even quite a bit worse than the 2000 ravens. We can hope that they bring their good games on the final 3, but this season rests in the hand of our defense and the offense being mildly competent.
If the defense fails, the offense cannot win games for us, no matter who is at the helm. If the defense succeeds, I have faith in our offense to put up the 10-15 points necessary for a win, no matter who is playing.
by steelguy99 on Dec 29, 2008 11:01 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That is the long and short of it.
Except in a close game in the 4th qtr. I want BB in there. If the offense doesn’t lose us the battle of the turnovers we will be very formidable. We just aren’t clicking on all cylinders on offense like in ‘05, but our Defense is a lot better (and that’s saying a lot) and our ST coverage is also improved.

Seriously. #1 in kick / punt coverage, right? After last year? Sick.
