Steelers 2009 Opponents
Bumped. Thanks Steelin. -Blitz-
**********************
The Steelers opponents for 2009 have been determined. The reward for facing down Murderer's Row this season is a much easier schedule next year. Rather than playing every team in the AFC South and NFC East, we face the much weaker AFC West (which failed to produce a single team with a winning record) and the mediocre NFC North. Because the Patriots did not win their division, we will not play them in 2009, instead taking on the Dolphins, who are likely to fall back to earth next year. We do have a rematch with the Titans on next year's schedule, but it is their turn to come to our house.
The toughest matchups look to be the two games against the Ravens, the aforementioned Titans at home, and the Chargers at home. On the flip side, fully half of our games are against the Browns, Bengals, Chiefs, Raiders, Packers, and the reliably lame Lions.
2009 Home Games
Ravens (11-5), Bengals (4-11-1), Browns (4-12), Chargers (8-8), Raiders (5-11), Vikings (10-6), Packers (6-10), Titans (13-3)
2009 Road Games
Ravens (11-5), Bengals (4-11-1), Browns (4-12), Broncos (8-8), Chiefs (2-14), Bears (9-7), Lions (0-16), Dolphins (11-5)

only thing i might disagree with
Is the assesment that the Dolphins are going to fall back to earth a bit. I don’t see that as the case at all. Parcells will continue to add the right kinds of pieces, the rookies that were drafted this year and playing a ton will get even better, the new coach Sporano will have even more time to implement his strategy, etc. They certainly arent going to be any worse as a team, even though their record may fall a bit. Perhaps thats what you were referring to. Anyway, the way I see it, that Dolphins game might be our 2nd most difficult road game. Sweeeeeeeeet. No way Broncos, Bears or Lions are going to be very tough.

the tuna
could be on his way out if wayno sells the dolphins, he can walk out and still get paid. Take the dolphins money and still get another job making even more coin. That won’t hurt all that much next year.
I always go back to the mid to late 90’s and it seemed like every time the dolphins came on the slate it ended with an “L”

Well it is rare that the schedule will look the same in December of this year when it’s released as it will in the December after you have completed your games. I think that it will be nice to have a bit of an easier schedule next year, but I still think almost all the games except the lions in the NFC East should be difficult, and I think the Chargers and the Broncos will be improved. Hopefully Jay Cutler’s insulin is low when we play them and their high powered offense isn’t a big factor.

true
Teams like Denver could make a big leap forward. But teams like the Lions, Chiefs, Bengals and Browns are probably only going to be just marginally better. Good enough to win if we don’t play well for sure. Chargers will be fairly dangerous – glad to have that one at home. Who knows wht will happen to Baltimore. On the one hand, Flacco is young and should improve. There are some capable young lineman, etc. But will Ray Lewis be there? What happens if his leadership is taken away. Who are they going to get the ball too as well? Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason are old and getting older. Todd Heaps not the same threat he was earlier this decade. This may be Baltimore’s best shot at a SB for a few years actually imo.
Anyway, I think it also matters when you catch these opponents. Bengals could be as dangerous as anyone in Week 1 but fall apart with a few injuries later in the year. Same with lots of teams. We’ll see but for now, theres just no doubt that this schedule has AT LEAST 10 wins written all over it. I don’t see many offenses that are going to be able to give us too much trouble.
Man, last thought..I can’t wait to face off against Adrian Peterson. What a matchup!

Agreed that things will look different by the end of next season, but while some of our opponents will get better next year, others will get worse. Who knows how coaching changes, offseason acquisitions, and injuries will change things? But on average, things will probably even out. For example, we knew this year’s schedule was going to be tough, but before the season, the Jaguars looked tough to beat and the Titans mediocre. Turned out to be the other way around, but it was still one tough game and one not so tough.
Blitz, thanks for the bump. Maybe I’m too hard on the Dolphins, but I think they got lucky this year. You’re right, Parcells has them pointed in the right direction (if he stays around), but I can’t be too scared as long as Chad Pennington is their QB.

that was my point that you have no idea who could get better or worse. For the record, I think the dolphins are going to regress.

What stood out to me
was that we get the Titans at home. Man, if they thought there was a lot of Terrible Towels this year in their house, just wait until they come up here to our house. Hopefully, they’ll be seeing those towels in their nightmares for weeks after.

thank god
for the road game in miami. I finally get to go to my first Steeler game, since I went to the sunday night game a few years ago against Miami. (Roethlisberger’s first NFL start)

one more thing
Mark Clayton is only 26 years old blitz, he’s probably in the beginning of his prime if anything. I do agree for the most part though, just look down the list. McAllister, Rolle, Lewis, Mason, Reed, and more, all in their 30’s.

Here's the fun part
…somebody else gets the Colts, Jags, Pats*, and possibly the Texans could finally be a force next year….who knows?
Always say that schedules can be deceptive – especially with teams that go from crap to playoffs (Atlanta/Miami), but this one does look a little more comfy I have to admit. I still can’t fathom how the bottom feeders of the league stay so bad every year, getting the high draft picks, and still stank up the place.
In terms of payback…..looking forward to smacking the Raiders like we should have in 06! Not to mention the warm welcome we’ll have for the Thumbtacks at home!
The big thing will be how do we progress or regress next year. Will the D maintain its personel? Will the O-line get good? Fodder for the offseason.

That somebody else is the Dolphins
The AFC East plays the AFC South next year, so the Dolphins will face the Colts, Titans, Jags, and Texans, plus the Pats (twice) and Chargers as well as the Steelers. They are also facing the NFC South, including the Panthers, Falcons, and Buccaneers. Let’s see how the Fins do against that slate of foes instead of the pansies they played this year. If nothing else, they could be beat up by the time they face the Steelers.
The Patriots, of course, have a similar schedule but draw the Ravens and Broncos instead of the Steelers and Chargers. Assuming Brady is back, they should have little trouble reestablishing control of their division, but the Pats will have to work much harder just to match their 11-5 record of this year.

I mean from our division....
If our div gets one AFC south and one AFC East then – I suppose B-more gets the Colts and Pats while we get Titans and Fins. Sounds pretty good to me.

strength of schedule
it’s hard to gauge how tough the schedule is now, because teams do get better or worse, but the dolphins are almost a lock to decline because their schedule will not be as easy as the joke schedules the afc east faced this year. Strength of schedule is really, really important. If a team played the Lions 16 times, and went 16-0 they wouldn’t be considered an alltime great team even if their record was the greatest ever. I know some clown announcers and commentators say a win is a win, and is always tough. But all wins are not even sloe to being equal as measuring sticks. If you played both the afc and nfc west this year, that’s pretty close to half a season against inept bumblers.
by vherub on Dec 29, 2008 11:07 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
sure, i hear that
BUT when talking about the quality of football team that Miami will be – meaning wht kind of game they will give us – then I dont think its accurate to say Miami will decline. Sure, maybe the wins total will go down because of the reasons you listed, but I still think that’s going to be a very tough game to win.
by Blitzburgh on Dec 29, 2008 11:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I would agree
Bill P. is one of the premier guys for evaluating and organizing talent. As long as he is at the reins, The Dolphins are in capable hands. The Ravens game is going to go a long way to showing how good this team is now, and into next year.

I predict a 12-4 or 11-5 season next year....
or maybe a 14-2 or 13-3 season If the O-line improves and Ben gets it together on his decision-making. The defense will still be there as long as Lebau is DC. I’m looking forward to next year changes and just think how dominant we will be if the offense is playing as good as the defense….I know…scary! But I really hope the Steelers win it this year because they deserve it after that “hellacious” late November-December stretch.
As for next year, if the Ravens lose Ray Lewis who I think will get picked up by the Cowboys (they try too hard to buy a superbowl ring and looked what happened to them!) then the Ravens will lose a huge motivator. Ray Lewis is like the Engine to that defense as well as the team. Joey Porter was like that for the Steelers. Its a huge blow to the Ravens if they decide to release him IMO.
The Dolphins may be on an upswing because due to their success this year, they can only get better with Parcels’ genius. The only way they can be grounded is if they have a tough schedule next year.
The Titans may still be playoff contenders if Kery Collins keeps his magic touch or if Vince Young steps up to the plate when Collins isn’t performing. But lets face it, the Titans are not that great, they beat us after we played four straight exausting games. The Titans season record has been inflated by weak matchups. I believe they did prepare for the game against us better than we did against them but overall, I think we win it against them in the playoffs this year if we meet and next years season game in Pittsburgh.
These are all wins in my eyes:
Bengals (4-11-1), Browns (4-12), Broncos (8-8), Chiefs (2-14), Bears (9-7), Lions (0-16), Dolphins (11-5) Raiders (5-11), Vikings (10-6), Packers (6-10)

Winning the division this year will be key to continuing success. The schedule is easier but it gets even better! We have to play Miami and the Titans next year. The Ravens will have to play against the Colts and Patriots. While the Titans game will be hard, the two game difference give us a huge advantage in repeating for the third straight year!

This year
This is the same combo of teams we played in 2005 I believe. Thats a good sign. the Ten’Teeth Titans will drop down without solid QB play. Honestly that schedule has 14-2 written ALL over it.
I shall be at the Detroit game in Detroit. I live up there, and seeing as they cant sell out a game to save their lives I should be able to get great seats in a warm dome for cheap.

hey...
Yeah I hadnt thought about that. you never know. Detroit plays us well oddly enough.
I remember coming to the burgh for the 05 game. Jerome’s last home game, his 3 TD performance. I swear I’ve never seen the lions play THAT well and Joey Harrington was like Manning out there.
But we won! Pretty cool.
Yeah that would be kinda cool if they got the Thanksgiving game with Pittsburgh and I got to go.

16-0
Why not, right?
I only saw a few of their games, but (IMO) the fish have shown some creativity and the execution over this season. I’d still put them in our win column, but I don’t see them dropping off much.
I don’t see the Browns being the cakewalk everyone else seems to be expecting. Right now, they are pretty decimated with injuries. When they were healthier at the start of this season, we beat ‘em by a mere 4 points. Lewis went from 38 yards in that first game to 94 in our second. For the puppies, 2009 could be the year that 2008 was supposed to be. Not sayin’ they’ll be great, but they could make the post season.
Something similar could be said for the Bengals. When healthy, they can be dangerous. I think they have more team building to do, but with a healthy QB and their receivers, they’ve got a punchers chance.

Browns
Come on now, for real? DA was a flash in the pan, as called by yours truly. BQ is getting punched by his teammates. KD is nothing. BG just got exposed.
So whos gonna throw the ball? Well either way, whos gonna catch it? Braylon has worse dropsy than our whole team. Winslow also sucks.
They suck people. The only reason they had a 4 point game with us was cause a hurricane came to town.
And Carson Palmer, like Tom Brady will never be the same as he once was. Besides his favorite target(s) are likely going out of town
by Mechem on Dec 30, 2008 1:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
LOL
I think DA is young and a little inconsistent, but he hasn’t gotten a whole lot of support there in Cleveland. Crennel hasn’t had the luxury of time to work with DA. Crennel is under pressure and that pressure roll downhill to his players. With a new regime, better coaching, and, yah, better receivers, I think he can do okay. Not great, but good enough to get the job done.
On D, they have the beginnings of a decent pass defense and should be able to improve their run defense. Again, I’m not talking about a perfect team, but one that should be a good deal more challenging than this year.
You can say the Brown’s 2007 season was an aberration. But in 2008, they faced nearly as rough a schedule as we did.
by Varmint on Dec 30, 2008 5:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly....
I think there were lots of us predicting this kind of stumble for the Browns with this season’s schedule. So yeah – not ready for the playoffs, but probably not as bad as they looked this year – especially with all QBs getting injured (and some subsequenty punched by their own teamates).
A new direction with a coach that might manage games better, another high draft pick season, and who knows…. I still think we’ll beat em though.
by SCSteeler on Dec 31, 2008 9:03 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Way too early...
Offseason hasn’t even started. New coaches are gonna come in and make changes. Remember baltimore last year… they went from very sorry to a playoff team. I think once free agency goes through and the draft takes place we will have a better idea of what damage we can do next year. I think some of those teams might surprise us, and i just hope that we avoid the injuries that we were plagued with this year. As of right now i’m with Varmint and predict 16-0, but that might chage…..we’ll see
by TrueSteelerForLife on Dec 30, 2008 1:35 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Hgave to agree
that it’s far too early to predict who is going to tank and who improves dramatically. As far as the Clowns go, I have been saying for a long time that they do have some good players, but no QB. DA and BQ do not impress me much, and while they may win some games they will not be a major player in the AFC unitl they get a stud QB. Plus, Winslow and Edwards are way over rated, simply based on the fact that TRULY great players make great plays in the clutch. I haven’t seen that must have play from the Browns.

16-0
Remember when we played the NFC West and the AFC East that 2007 season: 10-6. Three of those losses should have been wins (Denver, Jets, Arizona). Year before that NFC South and the AFC West: 8-8. Oakland – enough said. Schedules have a way of being misleading and good teams sometimes have a way of dropping their play to the competition sometimes. While I look at this schedule and think if they get some good linemen through the draft they shouldn’t lose either but man the season is long and you never know what can happen, what injuries you get, what team gets hot and its just so hard to do with the pressure and mercury morris’ voodoo doll. So lets wait till august to see how this team looks and the rest of the competition looks but man would i love to go 19-0 and win the super bowl then rub it into the pats’ fans faces.

That was then
This is now. Tomlin knows how to win on the road, and not to let his team sleep on easy opponents. We took care of business against cincy and cleveland and houston.
Worth noting that Denver and Arizona were not COMPLETE pushovers. But anyway I think MT knows how to win these games now. We wont have that problem again.
by Mechem on Dec 30, 2008 2:19 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
You're right
MT i think may turn out to be a better coach than bill, we’ll see if he can take this bye week and get us to the SB which BC had numerous of times but only did once and lost to dallas (pukes in mouth). He def took care of business and didn’t sit players the final game which Bill would. But we’ll see.

its still in the air
To me, he has yet to win a playoff game so that is important. Granted last year the refs had some dust in their eyes and we almost won without two of our biggest players that year. Still I need to see that we can handle somebody in the postseason. I dont want MT to be the next Tony Romo
by Mechem on Dec 30, 2008 10:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs

But always fun to think about it. I just can’t wait any longer for the Sleeler’s first home playoff game. I’m just giddy with excitement.
