hold the super bowl talk

this week the steelers have their second biggest test of their season.  (the giants were the first)  their defense has their work cut out for them for sure.  tony romo knows how to get rid of the football and can elude the heaviest blitzes.   i fear that the short passes to marion barber are going to be like getting stabbed to death by a butter knife all day.  i am also going to get sick of jason witten as well.  this offense is nearly impossible to stop now that romo is back.  the defense will need help.   big ben must step up to the plate. he must perform as well or better than romo on sunday for the steelers to win.  since he is making twice as much money as romo i don't think that is too much to ask of big ben. they also will have to run the ball to keep demarcus ware off ben's back.  dallas defense isn't a joke either lately. ware is playing almost as well as harrison.  if the steelers win then they can say they are legitimate contenders.  if they lose they are pretenders.  you can't lose to the giants, dallas and indy in your own backyard and call yourselves contenders.  so the steelers MUST make a statement sunday!!!

super bowl

So what do you think the chances are the steelers will get to the super bowl? Which team from the NFC do you want to see the steelers play in the super bowl? Who do you think the most likely steeler will be MVP in the super bowl? Man I can’t wait to see the Steelers in the super bowl.

I don't know about pretenders

Don’t get me wrong i will be MIGHTY disappointed if we do lose but I wouldn’t go as far to say we are ‘pretenders’. I mean we should beat them but i think it all depends on the fashion in the way we lose, if we lose the game, that you can say we would be pretenders. Also they are not nearly ‘impossible’ to stop remember that game vs. the Redskins? though the redskins achieved no sacks, they did get 2 INT’s off of Romo and held him under 200 yards passing (barely). Now don’t you believe that we can do a much better job?

Also remember yes i think it is a must win, but in reality it isn’t. We can still clinch a 2-seed w/bye as long as we win 3 out of the next 4. But i know what you mean by statement game. We have so much momentum and faith riding on that last demolition derby we had against NE. I know so many Dallas fans and really cannot afford a loss to this team especially if its in Pittsburgh especially in the snow especially with what is on the line.

We can maybe help knock them out of the playoffs. With a loss to us and then to NYG, Dallas may be 8-6 going against a hungry Ravens team who just was embaressed by us! Then would have to finish @Philly who by the way, hates them more than we do.

I wouldn't nessecarily say the Cowboys are our 2nd biggest test

I’d agree that they are e better team than the Pats but Bellicheats had our number for awhile now. We hadn’t won in New England for since ‘98 or whatever it was. We routinely struggle against New England.
Thats why I think the Pats were our second biggest test. I’d put the Cowboys in third.

Just my opinion, doesn’t really add anything to the conversation either but I figured I’d say it.

Match Ups

I think we actually match up well against the cowgirls defensively. Either Troy or Timmons can stay on Barber or Witten. Taylor lines up across from TO with Clark sliding his way to help out. I think our 3rd and 4th DBs matchup well against the cowgirls as well. My biggest concern is McFadden on Roy Williams.

Speaking of defense. Was I mistaken or did I see A LOT of Timmons in the Pats game. Seemed like he was on every play. Also noticed that we went nickle on 2nd,3rd, and 4th downs most of the game and that the corners were actually playing press coverage.

If we are physical with the girls (and put some licks on romo), I think we can pull this one out, just like what the West Coast Steelers did to them.

remember

we do not really run too much man to man, we zone blitz a lot so technically nobody will be man-ning up anyone unless they do adjustments but ya know thats what DL is famous for, that nasty zone blitz.

BB

doesn’t have to play BETTER than homo beerman, he just has to play well (smart). If we put up 17 plus, Dallas loses, end of story!

Second.

We don’t need a superstar BB to win the game. Just a BB that doesn’t appear to be playing for the wrong game. No turnovers and ball control will win this game. Especially if the conditions are bad. And I can only hope the weather is terrible :)

I agree

It’s way to early to talk about SB…we have a whole month left in the season. As per Tomlin, 1 game at a time…that’s all that really matters.

However, I do no think if we lose to Dallas (which is very possible b/c they are very good) it means all is lost. Not at all. All it really means is we lost to them on December 5…it means nothing else. We can infer, speculate, and make up resons why a lose is so bad but, all it really would mean is that we are 9-4 heading to Ravens.

Case and point. The year the Colts won the SB, they finished dead last (I think, or close to it) in rush yards allowed. In fact, in a game near the end of the year v. jaguars they gave up 300 yards in 1 game!!! No matter, they made it to the playoffs and the rest is history…

1 game at a time…no more, no less…

While I agree that it is too early to talk about SB,

I don’t think that it’s not too early to talk about AFC CG. Anything less than that would be unnacceptable to this longstanding fan given the team we have this year.

Seven SB appearances would be very impressive, but I’m willing to settle for a 14th CG appearance.

Hey Beerman,

haven’t heard from you in awhile. Honestly, I see less Super Bowl talk among the members of this board than I do from Yahoo Sports pundits, et al. I think the average fans, as opposed to the mainstream media, are much less likely to jump to delusional predictions than those who rely on selling advertising space, attracting enough hits from different ISPs, and maintaining viewership to make a living writing about these ideas.

What I do see, and rightfully so, is talk of the postseason, because barring a devastating December Pittsburgh will be there. And that’s all that’s wanted and/or required … the minimum qualifications to give the team the opportunity to earn a Super Bowl spot.

That said, I agree that there are some big tests, and some better defenses that the Black & Gold has yet to face. At the same time, once a postseason spot is earned there does exist what some call a “moral victory.” Such as New York’s final regular season game against the Pats last season, when they lost but fought valiantly until the final whistle. It gave the G-men the momentum needed for a deep playoff run and eventual Super Bowl victory/rematch. If the Steelers hand this one to Dallas the way they handed one to Indy or New York then they walk away with a lot of questions, but if they play a great game, fighting throughout, and still walk away on the losing end then I certainly wouldn’t consider it the end of the road.

The Steelers have made a few good statements, despite the fact that they came against teams with “weaker” defenses. The win against Cinci was a given, the win against San diego was against a team that’s lost its defensive identity, and granted NE’s defense is aging and slowing a bit, but those are the types of games necessary to get a banged up Steelers offense back in the habit, to rebuild cohesion and establish enough momentum to continue fighting.

I see in your 3-week hiatus from the board you’ve begun using metaphors and also allusive baseball terminology to make your points. Nice work! Your compositions are getting stronger. I suppose despite what everyone has already said to you, however, that you just dislike capital letters. I can dig that – the alphabet’s already an inherently heirarchical structure, no use in reiterating an oppressive heirarchy of order and structure into a free exchange of ideas.

I disagree that a loss = a status of pretender. The Giants have lost only to Cleveland; does that make them pretenders? Once again, if you expect a team to go undefeated, you might as well just give up and become an SEC college ball fan. All that matters is getting to the postseason and giving yourself a chance. It takes Ws to get there, but once there who those Ws came against doesn’t mean a thing.

Final Exam?

I don’t think so. While a victory will go a long way toward solidfying that elusive “identity” a loss doesn’t mean the sky has fallen. I think it will take 24 or more to win. It’s time to start talking about the SB seriously; that’s how SB winning emotion is generated into a steam-rolling rogue wave.

No

You dont talk SB until the week before. its that simple.

We dont even have a playoff spot clinched. Or our division. Or a seed. So its important to lock these things up.

When we are sitting pretty with a 3 TD lead in the championship game, by all means make a SB thread.
