Ryan Clark to pay a fine that ends with a lot of 0's

Per the Boston Herald and Profootballtalk Ryan Clark will be fined ZERO dollars.

Can you believe that, I for sure thought he would get a decent fine of at least 10,000 to 15,000 dolllars.  The one thing that really gets me though is Mike Pereria has this to say...“A lot of people think it’s a foul to leave your feet,” Pereira said.  “Launching is not a foul.  There is nothing in the rulebook that states that at all.  It’s a misconception people have."

A misconception people have, we were told that was the reason for the penatly during the game.  I am so stunned by the lack of consistency by the NFL this year.

How difficult and expensive would it be to pay for Full-Time NFL ref's?

In a multi-billion dollar organization how hard would it be to have these ref's training all season long using simulators and things to make sure that they are on top of their game rather than going back to selling real estate and being dentists for their full time job.

You would think the refs would know this

Hitting the defenseless receiver is a foul, however. And this is such a stupid, amorphous standard. Welker was not defenseless: he was running forward trying to get to a tipped ball. However, in a another sense, Welker could have had riot gear on and he would have still been “defenseless” against such a bone jarring hit. Stupid rule that was a knee jerk reaction to a couple WR injuries. QB is not the only position the NFL is protecting. The other big name prima donnas need protection too. Garbage call, but at least he was not fined.

Save that money

Cause there’s going to be more fines the rest of the regular season and even more in the post. I’m seeing a group of guys who are getting a kick out of playing as hard as they can. When they see an opponent go down because they physically out did him, I see their eyes get big with excitement. I’m seeing a coach, who even after the NFL sent in someone to talk to them about player safety, told his most physical players, “keep doing what you’re doing, and don’t change the way you play the game.” It’s a scary fun team in 08’.

That's Just Weird

So Ward doesn’t get penalized and gets fined.

Clark gets penalized but doesn’t get fined?

who cares as long as it doesn’t cost us the game.

maybe its because he apologized and it wasn’t helmet to helmet.

Makes sence to me

As Clark did nothing wrong to deserve a fine he shouldn’t get one

what did ward do wrong then?

I thought that was the right call on the field. If you watch the replay, it was clear that Welker gave up on the play and put his hands down. Also, T Carter, who was following the play gave up on it too before Clark nailed him.

Anyways, it was a good hit in that it sent a message. Hines hit was a cleaner hit, so he should not have gotten fined. Definately need consistancy here.

Ward was not fined for his hit of River’s that broke his jaw…just a reminder if that is the hit we are talking about…he was fined for a couple others this year, but not that one.

Clark was innocent

I understand the “defenseless receiver” argument. And I understand launching IS legal provided you dont initiate head to head contact.

However the only reason clarks play was away from the ball was because Troy tipped the pass. If troy doesnt touch that, Clark HAS to make a play on Welker who likely is catching the ball as Clark hits him.

For that reason, I personally felt he should not be fined. I expected one because the league never can agree on anything.

Whats sad is the refs couldnt take a minute to examine this. My thing is anymore when somebody gets decleated the refs automatically toss a flag.

Zebras Suck

NFL sucks. No consistency.
They fine 86 for blocking a LB where he isn’t penalized yet don’t fine 25 on a hit he took a 15 yard flag for. Then the NFL says 25 hit was perfectly legit.
Just end the suspense. Outfit all players with a set of flags. NFL should be National Flag League. Then, some entrepreneurs can start up a fresh new league where tackling and hitting is aloud. Kind of like WWF vs Ultimate Fighting.

PS Hope the Steelers D comes out hard and punches Dallas right in the mush at the opening whistle. Betcha that will take the fight right out of the pretty Cowgirls. (see Welker and Cassel) PSS Hey Dallas, bring your cheerleaders.

I don't find it that inconsistent.

It’s not the greatest set-up in the world, but it really isn’t that bad.

The first thing to remember is that the refs are making real-time judgements on the field while the NFL administration has the luxury of time to review.

A person could easily argue that, from the field, it looked like the Clark hit was unnecessary but, in fact, was a reasonably legitimate block. Additionally, a person could argue that the Ward block on Rivers looked perfectly legal in and of itself on the field, but conclude with a fine under the theory that if you’re hitting someone hard enough to break their jaw, you’re hitting unnecessarily roughly.

QBs

My biggest gripe is the QB calls.

Its wrong to me that you have to tackle a QB in a special way. Cause if you fall ON him when you tackle him, its a fine. But if you tackle him from the side and his head bounces off the turf thats a fine too. However if you accidentally brush his helmet, thats also a fine. But you cant lower your head into him cause thats a fine also. Oh and you better not go too low cause hitting the QB in the legs can be a fine too.

they should just give players Net guns to shoot at QB’s so that the QB doesnt get hurt but also cant go anywhere.

Just let the people play football. If you have a ball in your hand you should be able to be hit within the realms of legality, in other words everything but a helmet to helmet should be legal.

if it makes you feel better

We’ve hit a few QB’s pretty hard in recent weeks without getting flagged for it. Other than that one BS call on Harrison 5-odd weeks ago, we really have been pretty lucky in that regard.

charity standing orders

Yeah

Yeah but like watching the pats game, after a sack we got on Cassel the commentator said “and he was smart not to land on him because driving him into the ground can draw a flag”

its just garbage. You have the ball, prepare to be tackled. I should not have to have somebody roll a mattress under you.

Consitency

On one of the Ward fines I believe he was fined for slapping another player’s helmet after the play. I didn’t see the play, so I don’t know for sure, but since I heard that I’ve been paying attention and this happens all the damn time. It’s a gesture between competitors that is so common you can see it in almost every game. I don’t see how it’s a fine.

On Clark, keep it up man! I think there should be a fine on the NFL for flagging players in situations that are within the rules. Maybe the money could go to charity or in a pot for paying off the ridiculous fines levied on our team….

even in the Polamalu/LT commercial after the hit they slap each others helmets…

Well obviously it could have been negative

You could do it in a demeaning/negative way.

After all, a pat on the ass could mean nice play or “im gay”

Mike Pereira talks about how they don’t want to judge intent when assessing a penalty or handing out a fine. But when the higher-ups have no accountability, they can say what they want. As far as I can tell, Pereira does a pretty good job at heading up the officiating; he just has some pompous clowns working for him.
