Cowboys fan here: How's your left tackle doing?

I heard your LT is injured.  What is the likelihood that he'll play?

The reason I ask is D-Ware is 8 sacks away from the all time record and a big game could put him closer to that goal.

And good luck on Sunday.  I'm guessing this will be one of those all out slugfests.

Our LT has been injured for most of the season and is likely permanently injured. Max Starks, his backup superbowl ring-wearing 7 million dollar man has performed pretty well this season, but will likely have his hands full just like our starting LT would.

Who is this D-Ware you speak of? I haven’t heard of him.

How's Flozell doing

Care to go over/under for false starts this week?

I’m thinking with the noise of Heinz field and the prospects of facing Harrison every down, we should set the line around 2.5.

I’m deaf myself, always neat to see a professional athlete make it despite the so called disadvantage it brings along. (being deaf supposedly means you have balance issues, etc)

I just think it’s amusing that you mention your guy is 8 sacks away from the all time record. Boy do I sure wish we had a LB even close to as good at sacking as Ware.

by steelguy99 on Dec 5, 2008 2:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What is Harrison like 30?

A little off topic but Harrison hasn’t been doing this his whole career. Ware is only 26 and will have a shot at the all time sack record.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

All he needs to do is keep up his production which we all know is guaranteed in the NFL.

by steelguy99 on Dec 5, 2008 2:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ware's sack total has been going up every year

first 8 then 11.5 then 14, and this year it will be around 20. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t get double digit sacks for the next five years.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 2:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Double digit? I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t get 30 every season for the next 10 personally. The dude is just that good.

Ware

If we’re going with young pash rushing linebackers give me Merriman over ware every time

by archon095 on Dec 5, 2008 2:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Merriman is pretty average against the run and can't cover

Merriman hasn’t converted to a 3-4 linebacker well at all. He is a pure pass rusher. Ware has a more well rounded game and is a better pass rusher still.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 2:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Merriman is a bad run stoper because no one runs to his side. And he’s still a better pass rusher than Ware

No he is bad against the run because he overpersues on every play

which is why his sack total is as high as it is, and he still sucks in coverage

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 2:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ware is just a better all around linebacker and at least as good a

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 2:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

overall better than merriman

or harrison?

i’ll agree with merriman, he’s just a sack machine (steroid-aided i might add). but harrison stops the run, is above average in coverage, and has single-handedly forced 7 to’s this year. i’d say, right now, he’s the better all around backer of the three

by NoCal-SteelCity on Dec 5, 2008 2:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

high expectations, but possible

reggie white avg. 13.5 sacks for 15 years, played until he was 40, and is still two behind bruce smith at 198, smith with 200. Barring injuries, he has shot… like merriman did, and kendrel bell, and many young talents.

none of us play on the Steelers offensive line. Of course we can’t stop D Ware, we spend our time on the internet instead of the practice field. And if someone here does play on the o line, they need to get back to practice or they will not stop D Ware. Anyway, I won’t say you didn’t warn me, but I doubt I would be able to stop Ware even if he did walk into the bar at which I will watch the game.

Where’s Ware? Oh. Over there.

Hope he doesn’t need to be double teamed all night.

by SteelersVT on Dec 5, 2008 2:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ware?

The stats and play shows Bradie James is the best player on the Dalls D, not ware. He is dinged anyway. Besides, to take out ware with his hyperextended knee with a bruised bone, just go low. Have a back or Heath chip him low on a double team, and that will slow him down, make him think about it and getting dinged again. It’s not “dirty” football, it is just knowing your opponents weaknesses and taking advantage of them. If anyone has ever had a hyberextended knee, you know those things are painful, not to mention a “bone .bruise” which exacerbated the knee. I doubt he lets them shoot him up in his kneee, as most players won’t. He will slap the brace on and hope it doesn’t swell, maybe take something orally for the pain. I still don’t think he is a game changer for this game since we have learned to live with sacks. The biggest worry for the Cowboys is their running game- no Barber, no run, no victory.

by NoCal-SteelCity on Dec 5, 2008 3:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

MB3 vs. Choice

I don’t have a problem with either back. They’re both very good (MB3) to decent (Choice) backs but as far as running against this D, neither of them are/will have success. I don’t care if MB3 is 100% healthy, no one runs on this defense.

The difference, if Barber can’t play, will be in protecting Romo. Barber’s pretty good at picking up blitzers, but Choice has ZERO experience at doing it at the professional level. He’s a rookie that might get thrown into the fire and the likes of Timmons, Woodley and Harrison. That’s a recipe for disaster.

If Barber can’t go, I’d expect the Cowboys to be forced to keep TE’s in to help protect Romo and that’s a big plus for the Steelers.

by NoCal-SteelCity on Dec 5, 2008 3:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

also

Hampton’s job is to occupy blockers. go ahead and leave your center one on one with the Big Snack, modestly listed at 325 (but realistically around 340), and see what happens. Also, factor in Aaron Smith (probably the best run stopping de in the NFL) at 305+, and another 300+ end in either Kirschke or Eason, and size won’t be much of a factor. Besides, again, our dline occupies blockers so our middle backers Warrior and Foote can stop the run, something they both do very well. also, Deebo is an outstanding run stopper from the strong backer spot, and Woodley (265) is a big, strong, fast linebacker, difficult for any tackle to stop in run or pass protection.

overpower sure, no problem

but, playing defensive tackle is not ONLY about power. it’s also about leverage. at 6’1" 340, hampton has tons of power (he did finish 2nd in the NFL’s strong man comp 2 years ago) and almost unmatched leverage. he could get right under that Davis and drive him back. Easily? No. Every play? No. But Hampton hasn’t been to 3 Pro Bowls for nothing. He’d get the better of Davis. Just like he has against the elite centers/guards in the NFL for the past 8 yearsl.

Demarcus Ware

Is a very good LB. I will not disagree with anyone here. I fully admit he is an excellent pass rusher.

But tell me what else he does so well?
Lets compare the old man James Harrison.

Whos got more tackles? JH
Whos forced more Fumbles? JH
Whos tipped more passes? JH
Whos picked off more passes? JH
Whos got more safeties? JH
Whos leading in sacks? DW by 1.

I think I know who I’ll take.

I admit Harrison is having a slightly better year so far

but Ware is just starting to hit the sweet spot of his career. Harrison has only been very good for the past couple of years and is on the wrong side of 30. Ware still has most of his career ahead of him. He is still developing as a player, so that means he still hasn’t reached his full potential yet, and that is scary.

probably for the long future.

But not this year. And probably not for 3 years to come. Harrison’s the best over-all player on the steelers this year. The man plays most special teams and starts at LB. What he does for this team is far more than his 14 sacks show.

by Chicago Steeler on Dec 5, 2008 5:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Harrison's advantage over Ware at this point is minimal.

Ware is probably also a better pass rusher. Even though Ware doesn’t get sacks all the time he is always causing havoc. He may have 15 sacks, which is a lot, but that doesn’t even come close to speak for all the disruption he causes in the opposition’s backfield.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 6:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s caused more game changing plays than Ware. It’s hard to compare their pass rushing skills, because they have completely different styles. Ware’s a speed rusher, Harrison’s a bull rusher. Harrison is clearly better at getting fumbles, though – he lead the league last year in FF and is leading again this year. You can’t underestimate that skill. You’d also be naive to think that your guy is the only one who just misses sacks. There’s a great clip of Harrison rushing up the middle being doubled by an OT and OG, collapsing the pocket and forcing the QB to roll into his buddy who made the sack. I’d like to see Ware do that.

by BadMaafala on Dec 6, 2008 8:19 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ware also has a very good bull rush

he consistently overpowers guys. There is no weakness in his game, except maybe he needs to learn to use his hands better.

And it’s good to hear that Harrison is a bull rusher, that means Flo matches up to him better.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 6, 2008 9:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Neither is so one dimensional

Harrison does not merely push people out of the way and head straight the QB. He is quick. Against the Pats and the Chargers, he earned his sacks by going around the edge and beating the blocker to the QB’s fragile parts. It’s true that he can also move bodies. I know exactly which play BadMaafala is talking about. 2 defenders tried to stand him up, but he bulldozed them into the path of their QB enabling Kiesel to get the sack.

And the same is true of Ware. While he is known for his speed and the way he puts those long arms to use, he can also go sumo on a guy if he needs to.

But I don’t think either of these guys is going to decide the game. Mediocre QBs meet the Steelers and have pop warner games. Decent QBs go home looking like mediocre QBs. Excellent QBs leave with their fans wondering what happened to all those beautiful stats. But, on the other side of the coin, mediocre defenses have turned Big Ben into a turnover machine. He has put his defense in ugly positions.

This one comes down to either who gets rattled first or who can recover from getting knocked around. Big Ben can get rattled pretty easily, but he also recovers well. I don’t know Romo well enough to know what happens when he gets truly frustrated.

Buddha says

Lets cut all the tough talk.

Ware is a very good young football player, with the possibility of a great career ahead of him. I would compare him favorably to a Lamar Woodley. Wood’s second year looks a lot like Ware’s second year.

But we should acknowledge that Harrison is a unique story in the NFL. Here is a guy who is undrafted, who has to sit behind an all-pro linebacker for most of his career, who gets cut several times – and then comes back to be the best defensive player in the NFL this year. That’s pretty impressive. Hes also a stark contrast to some of the ugly parts of the star culture in the NFL (some of which are very well represented on the cowboys). We are proud of this guy in Pittsburgh.

Tony Romo is a great success story. Nice guy. Big ears. Seems to be having a good year. Hasn’t really shown much toughness in the playoffs, but whatever. He’s like Matt Cassell. A talented guy who came in behind a star studded offense and did well with it.

Pac Man is a thug no doubt and gets into fights with his friends and strip club bouncers. But at least he is not a woman beater like Santonio Holmes, which is astronomically worse. Don’t know how you can defend that garbage let alone root for the guy.

Romo leads the league in passer rating and is close to being

the number 3 QB of all time in yards per attempt. Cassell can’t do that and neither can Roethlesberger.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 4:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

First off, ben is #5 in yards per attempt.

Secondly, Romo has NOT been tested as in longevity. He DOES have big play receivers and therefore can have this 3rd all time. But truly, all time ends up being at the end of your career. You cant judge it just yet, hes played like 2 years.

by Mechem on Dec 5, 2008 5:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Romo is an undrafted free agent who made it big in the NFL

and it is even harder going for a QB than an OLB to do what he did. So Harrison’s situation is not unique at all.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 4:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

not unique at all?

he was cut 4 times before the 2006 season. 4 times, by 2 different teams. then, in his first year as a starter, he’s named the teams MVP and a starter in the Pro Bowl. what’s more unique, his second year is better than his first year. he’s no flash in the pan, no one hit wonder. he’s legit. he’s a model of hard work, dedication, determination, and perseverance.

romo, romo is not as unique as you think. and, he’s not nearly as special a story as a man named….Kurt Warner. heard of him? one of the top 5 rated passers ever. 2 time NFL MVP. and, beyond the fact that he’s ACTUALLY won a playoff game, he’s played in two Super Bowls, winning one of the them. also, warner was undrafted AND didn’t even get signed as a rookie FA out of college like Romo…

who’s more unique now?

NoCal-SteelCity 23, quincyyyyy 0.

by Mechem on Dec 5, 2008 6:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I never said Romo was unique

reread what I wrote. You’re the genius who said Harrison was unique, and then you just contradicted yourself by naming Warner. Ha!

by quincyyyyy on Dec 5, 2008 6:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ok

plenty of undrafted free agents make it in the NFL. but name me another OLB with a similar story to Harrison? that was my point. you made a blanket statement about the two being undrafted FA’s and “making it big” in the NFL, then saying Harrison’s situation"was not that unique." when actually, their stories have nothing more than being undrafted in common.

Harrison has not “made it big” in the NFL. Harrison does not have a contract near Romo’s, and doesn’t make $1 mil a year even. He’s still not a “household name” like other OLB’s (Merriman, Porter, Ware). Also, how many times was Romo cut? And, by how many teams? 0. So, comparatively, Harrison’s story is more unique than Romo’s. Understand yet?

Furthermore, when Harrison did finally stick in the league, he had to play behind a perennial Pro Bowler in Joey Porter, which really meant: not playing at all. Who did Romo back up when he came in the league? It wasn’t Aikman. In fact it was an impressive “who’s who” of quarterbacking…Chad Hutchinson, Quincy Carter, Drew Henson, and of course, Drew Bledsoe.

Then, after I discerned between there situations, I pointed out the path of Kurt Warner, also an undrafted FA. This shows that while Romo has certainly “overacheived” based on his status out of college, he’s not alone, he’s not unique. In fact, Romo garnered some interest out of college; not enough to be drafted, but enough to be signed, and then almost traded two years later for a 2nd round pick to the Saints. Warner got nothing…except an offer in the arena league, or CFL or something like that.

I was not originally comparing Harrison’s story to Romo’s because, as you said, it is much easier for an OLB to be undrafted and make it in the NFL than it is for a QB. I was making my statement on a case-by-case example.

But again, show me an OLB undrafted with a story like Harrison’s before you say his story’s not unique. I gave you one like Romo…

well

actually, they’re all inside backers, so that narrows your argument down, but regardless…

good examples though…except that only pierce and scott have been to the Pro Bowl, and they were both alternates, replacing the injured starters. fletcher is definitely the best of the group, even though he’s never made the pro bowl.

also, once these guys were signed, they stuck, and all saw relatively significant playing time within their first year or two. much different than harrison.

Very true

I do agree with the long term prospectus.

Truthfully if somebody said who would you take TODAY, i would take harrison. Because I feel like my team is on the verge of another championship.

But if I was rebuilding, say the lions, I would take Ware simply because he probably has more life on him.

But I do think Harrison will play strongly for the next couple years. LB’s tend to last.

Quick Thoughts & Responses

Flozell sounds like a prescription medicine for an enlarged prostate.

Ware’s good. Damn good. and will probably knock Ben down twice. But Ben’s been knocked down all year and is still sitting on 9 – 3.

T.O. prediction: 5 receptions, 48 yards, no touchdowns.

If Barber plays he’ll still be occasionally spelled by Choice; every time Choice is in the backfield expect an all-out blitz.

If Barber plays he’ll be held to under 70 yards.

The bookies are giving Pgh. a 3-point advantage for your betting purposes; that means that those who make good money living in the subculture, stat-driven world of picking winners and losers view this as too close to call, and are giving the nod to Pgh. based on home field advantage.

Contrary to what most of us seem to discuss, Ware and Harrison will not line up across from one another this Sunday.

Centers are the only people who fear Casey Hampton more than his neighborhood’s Ponderosa manager.

Romo’s got the top passer rating, which is an abstract, aggregate form of linear statistics. His game in Heinz Field will result in a rating no higher than 75.

Dallas has a lot of good numbers. Expect Pittsburgh to make them all a little bit worse.

I know the big concern with the Cowboys is their long drought of playoff wins. Don’t worry about it this year, though … after this Sunday’s loss they’ll effectively be eliminated from any postseason consideration.

Getcha popcorn ready.

romo

he’s just a pretty boy choke artist that is going to get his pretty jersey (blue and silver btw is f@#$ing gay – reminds me of glinda the good witch from the wizard of oz) bloodied and muddied. the man-beasts that are woodley and silverback are gonna trample his dainty ass into the cold, muddy grass of heinz. theres no doubt about that. the only question is how many times each one is gonna make romo eat grass and spit blood. the cowgirls are overrated – just part of the media hype machine created by the excess spending of that little penis, jerry jones.

I think you are the first person I know of to call Romo a pretty boy

I think he looks kind of goofy to me, but if that is your thing man go for it. I don’t judge.

Cowboy fans........ugh

How you can be a fan of a team owned by Jerry Jones is beyond me……

I don’t typically take a shot at opposing teams but Cowboy fans (not all mind you, but some) have been excessively irritating as of late.

dallas fans

are what they are. they don’t have a clue what’s going on outside of dallas. this guy quincy is cool though. you ask him; romo, t.o., witten and ware are all gods and guys like harrison, hampton and aaron smith are garbage. i like jerry jones though. its always funny how every year he spends a bazillion dollars on rent a thugs and then honestly believes they will win a super bowl!! HA HA HA HAHAH HAH HA!!! what else am i supposed to do during summertime?? watch the pirates??

Yes Sir.

U´R right and the Cow´Boys, can´t even face ANY opposition to t NYG. In T game with t NYG T Steelers, almost beat them, if not for… those penalties, What has done the NYGto Dallas? they R their Daddy, T same will happend to them in Heinz Field.

In other issue, U just can´t build a team with money, as Jirry JiJiones is trying to do from gazillions ago.

Good look With T DBeasts on Sunday, B´cause if U can win maybe don´t overcome T rest of the season healthy, look for T Eagles, and also U´l see NE, and so on.

O sales tickets,...and let D rest a little, and D Win Championships.

Two cents

Cowboys have their weapons and their talent, Romo, TO, Witten, Ware, etc. You guys fly high and want the attention..cool. That’s your style and has been for a long time. But the Cowboys have a tendency and a history to be a selfish team. When the Cowboys spell team, some of their players put an “i” in it. Like TOs t shirts. IBLOCK, etc. Just a point.

Ware, Wtiten, Romo, TO all great individuals. And with the surrounding cast make up a good and talented team. But still some of those guys are focused on their numbers/stats. We saw it happen to TO the last time he played here, with a damn good QB at the helm that day. Witten and Romo are team players for sure and thats why they are so effective. This is the matchup that presents the most trouble. Witten will be limited as will all of the other Cowboy’s weapons…limited..not stopped. The Cowboys will get their plays on both sides of the ball.

Ware can’t do it by himself. Our line hasn’t played great this year…granted. But I do suggest that for a group of guys that kept changing from the beginning of camp till whenever Marvel Smith went out, they haven’t had much time to get in sync. Two games they have played well enough and even through the first 3 quarterts of the Giants game they held their own. Line can only block for so long. Yes they miss plays, most lines do. This will not be an easy day for Ware, don’t know think it will be his most difficult either, but he won’t be able to do it by himself.

Our D is going to do what they do. That doesn’t mean they are going to be in your backfield making Romo cry for his Mommy. In fact in the first half of last weeks game they (LBs) were seen dropping into coverage. The Cowboys have a good line that hasn’t been playing up to their potential.

Sunday afternoon it will be seen who does better in their matchups, both as individuals and units. I do add in that while Romo has seen the Eagles and Giants defenses, both 4-3s, this is an intricate confusing 3-4 scheme that has given the best qbs in the league fits. It will be a good game. This game comes down to how well Ben manages the game, turnovers will be key.

OH

TOs suicide attmept or whatever the hell that was isn’t exactly model citizen behavior. He’s got $25M reasons to live….HA! Knew that chick was getting fired.

You want model behavior out of your WR..check Hines! Class act and never bitches about his numbers!

hines isn't a model citizen

he is an animal abuser… i can clearly remember him knocking out a certain raven last season, and then this year, he broke the jaw of a bengal…
