Steelers Tender 4 Players, Free Agency Begins Tonight at Midnight

Bumped from the diaries. Insane day for me today and tomorrow so use this thread as for all the news that rolls off the press today and tomorrow when free agency opens at 12:01 am Firday morning.

-Blitz-

The Steelers tendered 1.4 million dollar offers to Nate Washington and Chris Kemoeatu. They tendered the lower 900K offers to Trai Essex and Greg Warren. They will get compensation if Nate or Kemo are signed elsewhere. Nate Washington is now making twice the money that Santonio Holmes will get in 08. As Myron Cope would say "Hmmm Haaa"

Compensation
The Steelers would get second round choices for Nate or Kemo if someone else offers them a contract the Steelers decline to match. Essex would garner them a 3rd round pick. Because Warren made the squad as a free agent they would not be compensated if someone signs him and they decline to match. I don't see anyone signing any of these guys for more money.

correct me if i'm wrong
but if someone gets Kemo or Nate we get a 2nd round pick (or is it 3rd?), and if someone gets Essex or Warren we get a 3rd round pick, or is that the tier where we get a draft pick in whichever round they were originally selected....

whoops
must've been posting at the same time, thanks 5020 for the clarification.  i think 2nd rounders for Nate and Kemo is very nice.  Losing one of them for a 2nd round pick I wouldn't mind at all.  A 3rd rounder for Essex, especially in a draft deep on OT would be huge, in fact I kind of hope we lose Essex and get the 3rd round pick.  Save some cap space signing a 3rd rounder instead of Essex, and probably get an equally effective player.

Wow
I'm so impressed with how quick the news gets out on this site. yay! In this year's draft I wouldn't mind losing all those players if we were compensated with draft picks.  Seriously - possible short term pain for long term gain.. maybe i'd miss nate.. maybe.

wouldn't mind seeing them all go except Nate
If Chris K gets snagged by someone else then they can use both 2nd rounders to trade up in the first and use one first round pick on the best OT avaliable and the second first rounder on Brandon Albert.

Problem with the OL solved. Oh yea and with two third rounders they can draft the best center and Kendall Langford.

"You know who I want? William Wallace. That's who I'm looking for" - Bengals defensive line coach when asked who he was looking for in the draft

hmm
i think if Kemo is actually ready to start, it'd be tough to pick up a guard in the 2nd round who could start and be solid from day one.  we've seen Kemo can be solid to very effective playing.....now down the road the 2nd rounder might turn out better ultimately but we need line players right now so it would be hard to lose Chris.  anyways, noone is gonna give up a 2nd rounder for Chris K. or Nate anyways I doubt.

None Expendable
Yeah, I really don't think any of them are expendable and that's why they were tendered.
The OL is in disarray. With Faneca leaving they can't afford to lose his back up. Essex is a valuable reserve that provides depth at tackle in case of injury. (see last year)

If we lose Nate we are up the creek. While I have been cold on him he is the third best WR we have. Losing him puts the rag doll on the field and with Ced in the last year of his contract and Hines no spring chicken it would force the FO to draft another WR out of necessity instead of athleticism.

Our special teams are a joke. One area where we haven't seen much 911 is in the snaps. We know Warren can be counted on in a SB to snap the football and that is crucial.

Andre Davis was Resigned by the Texans
And so perish my dreams of him returning kicks for the black and gold.
Though $8 Million in guarantees is too much.

if we lost Nate
if we lost Nate and got a 2nd rounder for him, it doesn't affect our other draft strategies at all if we just use that 2nd rounder we gained to draft a WR to take his spot.  Considering their is good depth in the WR draft this year, that wouldn't be too bad either.  Still keeping Nate is better and I don't think anyone will give up a 2nd rounder to get him, not when there is a deep WR pool this year.

so if a team signs
them we get a second rounder?!?!?  That's wild.  How does that happen on a 3rd string WR?  What are the deciding factors to see how we are compensated?  I must admit, free agency is my biggest weakness when it comes to NFL knowledge.  But I'm pretty sure that those compensatory picks come next year, not this year, since the draft order is already finalized.

and
I just read that it is the amount of the tender that dictates the lvl of draft choice, not the quality of the player.  So it seems to me that the steelers offered that high of a tender because they feel that no one will give up a 2nd rounder for those guys, to deter people from talking to them.

by steelerark on Feb 28, 2008 7:32 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

The High End
of the tender offer (1.4) gets you a second round pick from the team that signs your player. I believe the way it works is the lower tender offer gets you the pick at whatever round the player you sign was drafted at. Essex was a number 3 pick thus the third round pick as compensation. Warren was a free agent so we get no draft compensation. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

nope, you're right
They receive the pick from the team that took the restricted FA.  I was thinking of compensatory picks, which are different animal entirely.

losing Nate...
would this be so bad.Ben is looking for a taller receiver anyway.we do also have Miller as our "real" 3rd receiver.and dont forget about Spaeth(he's a huge target)....he played great until injuries slowed him....and he was a Rookie.Ben can get the ball to anyone if he has protection.Nate is not worth more than Santonio any year.hopefully he goes and we can add depth which we need badly.
