Faneca a Jet
I wish him the best as he goes forward. He was a player I was proud to route for. He always played hard and was willing to put the team first, exemplified by his move to LT for part of a season. Though I understand the business reasons of the Steelers, I am sad to see him go.

4 years for 32 million. He got 23 million in guarantees.

sad
I wonder how much lower our highest offer was/would have been. Honestly I was expecting him to get offered more.

Pay Day
This last pay day sets up Faneca and his heirs for life. He already has his ring. He's a Louisiana boy who makes his home in the Bayou so there is no affinity for western PA.
My biggest concern is if Faneca will be the highest paid lineman in the league at 8 million a year, how do they get locked into Starks for 7? I sure hope we sign Starks long term for less than that or someone else signs him. At 7 million Starks would be the highest paid player on the Steelers besides Ben when he inks his new deal.

Good luck
We're not locked into paying Starks $7 million. I have to admit I was totally ignorant about how the transition tag works and I'm still not sure of all the ramifications. Ed Bouchette of the P-G had some good information the other day which indicates there is no way the Steelers will exercise the transition tag to match an excessive offer. Right now the Steelers are over the salary cap but that's a flexible figure and might include the $6.9 mill value of the transition tag. Personally, I think anything above what Marvel is earning would be excessive. We should learn fairly soon if there is interest in Starks; if there is, he could easily get an offer at least equal to the $25 mill (including $9 mill signing bonus ) five-year deal that similarly talented (and inconsistent) G Justin Smiley just signed with the Dolphins. My opinion is the Steelers would let Starks walk if someone made that offer. KC Chiefs might have interest as they face a massive OL rebuilding job (likely all new players from C to RT) and are looking for road graders to block for LJ.

Here's that link to the article that Lifer mentioned. It got a lot on Starks and how his deal works.

There's a reason why the Jets, 49ers and Rams
It's all about resource management and using that $116 to make the jigsaw puzzle. To that end, I think the transition tag on Starks was really smart. I think it will quell interest from other teams on Stark and open the door for the Steelers to sign him long term for something far less than paying him $6.9 this year....(Unless I'm in a pipe dream).
