Steelers Look At Dykes & Moore

On the first day NFL teams are aloud to look at potential draft picks the Steelers met with WVU DL Keilen Dykes (6-5 296) and UM DL Dre Moore (6-4 311) at Steelers HQ on the North Side.
The Steelers are desperate for help on the defensive and offensive lines. These two athletes had to have Professor LeBeau salivating. What's the take on these guys?

WVU Comments
I just asked my good friend who graduated from WVU and is a fanatic.  This is what he said about Dykes.

he was our nose tackle. he lived in my dorm freshman year on the 9th floor dude carried all his shit up there on his back the steelers usually bring the wvu guys who dont get drafted in at least to try out. but i htink dykes can make a team hes real strong, maybe not the fastest, but hes used to playing in a 3 down lineman set, so usually double teamed. he didnt make the combine for some reason
not sure if hell get drafted
maybe real late there were a lot of dlinemen this year not a free agent

So there you go - sounds like he could be of some value.

Nice firsthand report. Does seem like some value. Wonder why no invite to the Combine.

Dre Moore
Scout.com has him rated as the 5th DT (68th overall player, so late 2nd, early 3rd round) in the country.

Here's his biography from Scout:

  1. Played in all 13 games at defensive tackle, starting 10 ... his 7.5 tackles for loss ranked third on the team ...tied for team-high honors 3.5 sacks ... ranked tied for eighth on the team in tackles with 47.
  2. Played in 10 games along the defensive line, starting the last three ... finished the season with 18 tackles (eight solo) and one tackle for loss.
  3. Played in each of the final eight games on the defensive line ... registered 12 tackles (six unassisted), 1.5 TFLs, one sack and three quarterback hurries.

Mocking the Draft
has him as the 85th player overall.  I know there are other sites, and someone else can probably do a more thorough job, but it looks like he may be a late 2nd through early 4th rounder.

a WVU Player on the Steelers?
This just seems wrong, somehow. This is Pittsburgh, after all...

(Yes, I'm aware we have one on the practice squad...)

Dykes is a good prospect
Moore seems like a natural fit for the Steelers in Round 2. He had a great combine, I think he was the fastest guy over 300 pounds and he had a productive career at Maryland.  He is one of those athletic guys that at times failed to live up to media expectations but he's obviously a terrific prospect.

There's a lot to like about Dykes. Here's a link to NFL Draft Scout info http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/profile.php?pyid=9650 ... Among other things, he's a team leader, a hard worker and a bright kid. Could play 3-4 DE. Projected as a fifth- or sixth-rounder. I had him as a preferred fifth-round pick for us in my first Draft List a month ago and the only reason he didn't make the most recent list is because it's tough to project him as a ST contributor. Another W. Virg player the Steelers may want to sign if he goes undrafted is ILB Marc Magro.

The Steelers RB coach was recently at W. Virg's Pro Day. Presumably he was more interested in Schmidt than Slaton but you never know. QB coach Ken Anderson was also one of those in attendance for Andre Woodson's Pro Day. Probably meaningless but intriguing.

Draft strategy
So it sounds like they may be targeting Moore in the 2nd, and if he's not there, they will look to Dykes in day 2.  Don't think they would draft two DL this year, but maybe.

Moore
Moore's an intersting prospect who could convert to 3-4 DE but also slide inside and rush the passer on 3rd downs.

I wouldn't mind seeing a starting DL of Smith, Hampton, and Moore. Then on 3rd downs they could switch to Smith, Moore, and Keisel. Or even a four man line with McBean or another draft pick.
