Cedric Wilson in trouble again

According to Dale Lolley's always informative blog , receiver Cedric Wilson was arrested for a fight with his ex-girlfriend in a Pittsburgh restaurant. You may remember this same girlfriend had a standoff with police at Wilson's home a few months back.

Dale thinks, and I agree, that after this he is done as a Steeler. I think many of us thought he was likely done before this anyways because of his age, salary, and diminished role on the team.

This doesn't look good for Wilson at all
There doesn't look to be any he said-she said at all, just a simple case of a man punching a woman in the face. From Yahoo Sports:
Wilson, 29, entered the Patron Mexican Grill in Pine Township shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday night and saw Lindsey Paulat sitting at the bar, according to a criminal complaint filed by Northern Regional Police.

Paulat told police Wilson pushed her on the shoulder and, when she turned around, punched her in the left side of her face before leaving promptly, according to the complaint.

There was redness and swelling on Paulat's left cheek, and witnesses told officers what happened, police said.

No one has wanted Wilson gone more than me, but I was hoping his release would be for what he hasn't done on the field instead of what he did do off of it. The bad thing is though, he was charged with simple assualt and disorderly conduct so he could throw a fit if he is cut b/c those were the same charges that Silverback faces.

Wilson is gone
The Steelers have terminated the contract of veteran wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, the team announced today. http://news.steelers.com/article/87778/

What the F
How is Steelers.com up to the minute on Ced being cut but a whole day and a half behind on the signing of MR Mohawk? I starting to wonder if his signing is really a done deal.

Has to be done
If it wasn't done, we would have heard that from Hartwig's agent. It's not in Hartwig's best interests to have everyone thinking he's already signed if in fact he's still looking for a contract.

There might have been a cap space issue that the club had to resolve before submitting Hartwig's signing to the league. Or maybe they did submit it, and the league came back and said ... ''Um, you're a little over the cap fellas. Why don't ya try again after cutting someone.''

Signing Hartwig for $2 million, and saving $2 million for cutting Wilson, is certainly one of those fortuitious coincidences.

Wilson
We've got some cap room now!!

damn
Glad he's gone, but as golden said, I wish it were before this happened.  Not happy that in the offseason this year we've had two assaults.  Hard to say how to correct the problem from a team perspective, but it should be addressed and not swept under the rug.

are we positive
that he wasn't told yesterday his contract was being terminated, and that was part of his anger?

Harrison
yes Harrison was charged with the same thing.  However, read the Post-Gazette, which mentions that Wilson's girlfriend claimed he instigated her into killing herself over the phone before that armed standoff last month, and he dropped his protection from abuse order against her, when she agreed not to file one against him.  Much more problems going on with him.

Wilson
I'd say cutting him might be a message to our players, but the message would be something like, "If you aren't very good or important, but you have a fairly high cap number and you get arrested, we're cutting you."

In other news, Willie Reid is throwing a Maundy Thursday party.  When asked if he was religious Reid replied, "I am today!"

Salary cap question
Taking what I learned yesterday, we save Ced's 2008 salary of $2M, but we have to account for the pro-rated bonus of $500k.  Are there future years of pro-rated bonus that we also have to account for?  I understand that when you cut a guy, you have to add all future pro-rated bonuses against the cap immediately, or spread out over two years if done after June 1.

Related question, when you give a guy a $15M signing bonus, let's say with a 5-year contract, you get to spread out the bonus so that each of the five years the cap hit is $3M.  But, do you have to pay the $15M immediately to the player?  Is the club out that much cash right away?

by maryrose on Mar 20, 2008 11:04 AM EDT   0 recs

Yes, bonuses paid
Players get bonuses in full right away. Spreading out the bonuses is for accounting purposes to delay the hit on the salary cap.

So do we account for more than $500k?
To count against the cap this year?  In other words, did Ced have any more years with us that more $500k cap bonus hits need to be factored into the 08 cap now that we cut him?

by maryrose on Mar 20, 2008 11:15 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No
because he was in the final year of his deal.

Was Harrison's assualt an
actual assualt?  People get charged with assault for anything from pushing someone to spitting on them.  Wilson actually punched, punched a woman in the face.  An athlete, whom I assume works out and has someone strength to him, punched a woman in the face.  That is pretty severe.  There just is no excuse for that, no matter what.  I have had some pretty horrendous things done to me by one woman in particular, but punching her would not have been even remotely excusable(although, trust me, there were times when I wanted to).
