Compensatory picks announced

AFC North rivals Baltimore and Cincy were the big winners when the NFL announced the awarding of 32 compensatory draft picks. Both get four extra picks, including one each at the end of the third round along with Atlanta and Washington. The Ravens other extra picks are in the fourth, sixth and seventh rounds.  I think the Bengals also get a sixth rounder and two in the seventh round. Chicago got three compensatory picks, all in the seventh round, and now have a total of 12 draft picks. A total of 15 teams were awarded comp picks. Pittsburgh not one of them.

Comps
The Browns didn't get any either, which makes sense considering some of the signings they've made in the past 2 years.  I can live with the Bengals and Ravens getting the picks this year, considering who they've lost.

well
they get the picks because there team cant keep players. the browns didnt get any cause they can keep players, or sign new one to fill the spots.

thats why they call it Compensatory

Comp Picks
Most good teams get a lot of comp picks.  The Colts, Pats, Steelers, and Chargers have gotten lots of comp picks in the past decade because they have too many good players to keep.  The Ravens have gotten their fair share as well because they have great defenders at basically every position.

nothing to do with the team being good or not
its roster size

roster size?
Comp picks are based on unrestricted free agents that the team doesn't resign. It has nothing to do with roster size. The Ravens got high comp picks because they lost Adalius Thomas among others and the Bengals got the picks because they lost a guard to your Browns (Steinbach I think). So it does have something to do with quality players.

yes.
to an extent.  only 53 on gameday.  not sure about the rules going into training camp i think you can have a ton, just have to cut certain people by certain dates to get to the cut-off numbers as camp goes along.  bearedawg, no it doesn't have anything to do with good teams in that the NFL doesn't give the comp. picks to teams with good records, but it works out that the best teams are the ones who draft good players, who then inevitably some of them leave for big paydays down the road, and thus, those teams get a comp. pick.

it works basically like this...
it has everything to do with the value of the players lost compared to the players gained.  We can take the Steelers this year as a good example.  We lost Faneca and gained Moore.  They factor in playing time, salary and postseason kudos(like Alan's ninety Pro Bowls) and compare the guys lost to to the guys gained.  Since we lost a future HOF candidate(please note I say CANDIDATE), and gained a third string RB, we will prolly do well.  Salary is the biggest factor, and with Faneca's contract, I think its safe to say its gonna be a 3rd rounder :)  Absolutely nothing to do with the teams won/loss record or roster size.

Btw, teams start camp with 85 guys.
