James Harrison Arrested

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is reporting Steelers LB James Harrison was arrested for simple assault and criminal mischief on Saturday in connection with his girlfriend. Harrison was released that night.

Hopefully this issue is resolved and Harrison faces no penalty from the NFL. Most importantly I hope Harrison doesn't exhibit this type of off the field behavior again.

bummer
Disappointing. Obviously nobody condones that kind of behavior, but there's no way a simple assault charge will get looked at by the NFL. Aggravated maybe, not simple assault. Hopefully this will be a one-time incident.

I wonder how some of these players tip-toe the line between so ridiculously aggressive on the field and being composed in real life.

always wondered that myself
It's got to be hard to turn that 'switch' on and off at times.

Does anyone know if players are drug tested during the offseason? Not that I'm suggesting anything but I was just wondering.

Testing
I think that they can be tested anytime during the year, so the program is truly random.  If I remember, one of Ricky Williams' failed tests was in the spring.

Silverback
Here's an interesting article about Harrison after Porter was named the NFL's most feared player:
That would be a Mr. James Harrison. They call him "Silverback," because, as a Mr. Clark Haggans once said: "They're big, strong gorillas from the Congo, the silverback gorilla. They spend their days swinging on trees and breaking stuff. All the other apes and everyone in the jungle are afraid of him."

sorry clark
Silverbacks are not a species of gorilla from the Congo.  A silverback is simply and older adult male that is the dominant male of the troop.  That concludes our biology lesson for the day.

Ugh
I've stayed away from thinking about this but I keep seeing it and it really makes me annoyed.  I hate it when Steeler players do this shit... Sorry for the language but I feel it's appropriate. This isn't just simple assault against a dude in a bar, (which while uncool I can get) this was his girlfriend, and I don't find that excusable in any situation.

Last Silverback quickly became one of my favorites. I love the guy coming out of nowhere and being one of the best in the league, but have lost a lot of respect for this.

I hope this is an isolated incident and he'll be a model citizen from here on out.

Sorry for the vent, i'm done now.

I don't accept apologies made through lawyers
On the one hand, sure, James acknowledged the alleged event in the media.

On the other hand, apologies issued through lawyers are no apologies at all.  He owes the city of Pittsburgh, the Steelers organization, all of the fans, his family (and especially his girlfriend), my family, and anyone else I can think of a personal, public, and heartfelt message of regret and contrition.

-1000 for hitting your girlfriend.
-50 for apologizing through a lawyer.

Do something to take that number the other direction, please.

Eat em up! Eat em up! Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!

Do you think he will be suspended for a game?
That might be the new standard punishment for things like that.  Unless Goodell is too wrapped up in Spygate, this might be the example he was looking to make.  To be honest with you I wouldn't blame him.  We just don't need that garbage, beloved Steeler or not, we just can't tolerate hulk football players hitting women.  If I was commish I would dock him the first game.

no way he gets suspended
Not by the NFL at least. As horrible as it is, simple assault is a misdemeanor. I don't believe there is any precedent of any suspensions for one-time offenses of misdemeanors. Maybe there should be, that's up for debate. I didn't realize that he had knocked down her door as well to gain entry to her house. That's pretty out of control.
