Round #3 - Bruce Davis from UCLA

I'm surprised no-one else has posted anything, but anyway, that was our round 3 choice - listed as OLB, maybe we'll play him as a DE? I don't really know much about him, but anyone who sacks the QB 12 times a year for the past two years can't be all bad :-D

Some nice info here:

opening it up for discussion :)

<<update>> We Take Tony Hills, a 6'6", 300 lb. OT from UT - finally some help for the OL :)

<<update>> That was a little unexpected - we take Dennis Dixon from Oregon in the 5th round - seems like his draft stock fell a lot after a knee injury. Grooming a Batch replacement? Here's hoping we don't see him on the field for quite some time... Or maybe he's a conversion project?

Davis...

He’s a typical Steelers early-mid round pick, awesome pass rushing DE, convertable to LB, hope Hills works out, and we get a strong DE project later.

He seems like he can really bring the pressure and can add depth in two spots. I wish he was either a dedicated DE or DT though.

mid and late rounds

DE Bruce Davis is a good pick for what was on the board. Dre Moore and Red Bryant were picked earlier in the round, I believe those are the guys the Steelers were looking for but at least they got a sacking LB with a high motor – thats good. As for Tony Hills I don’t know much about him but at least we got some help on the O-line. He’s from Texas (big football state) so he can’t be bad plus he already knows Sweed. The Dennis Dixon pick, I had a hunch they’d go for him – he is a good gimmick-play player plus a good QB. Even though a 3-4 DE is need at this stage, I would like to see the Steelers pick up Owen Schmitt from WVU – he is a nasty FB, he likes to hit people and will give the Steelers running game a nasty and punishing attitude. Schmitt is a bulldozer.

Does anybody know what the Steelers got for the trade with NY Gmen for their 4th round pick?

Another great pick.

12 sacks in two straight years is great. He had great productivity.

Davis

While I usually hate the versitility talk, I think that is what Davis brings to the table. Before the draft, we mentioned that we needed a SILB and OLB depth. While Groves and possibly Avril would have been better OLB/pure pass rushers, Davis is a very safe pick and could back up 3 LB positions. He’s big enough to play on the strong side (something that can’t be said for Timmons, Foote, or Fox), and would still make a fine OLB as well. On top of that, he’s a hard worker and fairly intelligent, which he’ll have to be to back up 3 spots. NFL’s scouting report compared him to Bruschi, and said his best position might be SILB in the 3-4. I think I’d rather have Dre Moore (he was available, btw), but this is a solid and useful pick.

Davis

This is the pick that bugs me the most. I’d have rather them taken Cliff Avril. They’re both about the same size and Avril seems to be the better athlete and more rounded player.

Davis

according to my sources:

Cliff Avril is 6-3 252 time:4.78
Bruce Davis 6-3 241 time : 4.69

There is no way Davis can play on a 3-4 D-line at that weight. He will most likely move to LB. If he adds bulk there is a chance. 20 lbs at least. This will slow him down some, but will help him stand his ground against 2 OL.

hmm

Were those Pro Day results?

Avril ran a 4.51 at the combine and Davis ran a 4.72. I was surprised that Davis got up a couple of more bench reps than Avril though. Here’s another link that talks about Avril’s performance at the combine

attitude

One of the stories i’ve heard about Davis is that he came off the edge in one game – Senior Bowl, maybe – and smacked the quarterback to ground, then just stood their hollerin at him. Not terribly sportsmanlike, maybe, but he’s got that cutthroat steelers attitude. Gotta luv that.

hmm

They are precombine results. Looks like Avril did some serious conditioning.

by draftguy on Apr 28, 2008 4:27 PM EDT   0 recs

probably questionable

I tried to find Avril among the ‘top performers’ on the combine’s website but he wasn’t listed among either DL or LB so those may be some bad stats but that’s why I found 2 links. Normally I would trust NFL Draft Scout but they’ve closed up their site and you have to pay for anything now.
