Whose Days Might Be Numbered Following the Steelers 2008 Draft?
Let's take a quick look at who might be leaving Pittsburgh in the wake of our additions in this year's NFL Draft.
Overload at RB Position?
Our depth chart now has Gary Russel, Willie Parker, Mewelde Moore, Najeh Davenport, Rashard Mendenhall and Carey Davis. We obviously won't be carrying 6 RBs so I'd expect Najeh to get cut. Rusell too perhaps, especially if Dennis Dixon impresses in camp and in the preseason.
WR?
As of now, we have Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Nate Washington, Limas Sweed, Willie Reid, and Dallas Baker in the mix. Again, Dennis Dixon should play a big role in how this position shakes itself out. If we want him on the roster, Dallas Baker likely will be on the practice squad again. Willie Reid might not dress much either.
That may be it, but depending on what we do with our free-agent rookie signings, and depending on how our internal competition along the offensive line plays out, we may also be saying goodbye to one or two more familiar Steelers.

Well
Definantly Najeh.
No to Russell. He still has potential and I think he will be good but he will never be the full time guy unless Mendenhall is a bust which I doubt will be the case.
As for WR – It will be Baker again. I have always been a fan of Nate Washington. more than most people. However now that we have Sweed, this could very well be his last year, unless we can sign him for a number 3, 4 contract which I dont think will happen.
The depth Chart at the beginning of the year should be:
1 & #2. Ward and Holmes#3. Washington
#4. Sweed
#5. Reid
At the end of the year I expect Sweed and Washington to swap spots, sort of how Wilson and Holmes did in 2006.

Can you explain to me why Reid is still on the roster?

Because
He is a good Wide Receiver. He wasnt drafted only because of his return skills.

yeah
I’ve always been a fan of Reid. He seems to create when he’s got the ball in his hands. I like the value of the Sweed pick, but was hoping to see Reid get some more chances this year. Doesn’t look likely short of injury.

Reid
He needs to hold onto the ball on kick returns if he wants to make the team. I think he has potential, but he can’t get on the field. He’ll have one more training camp to prove he’s worth a roster spot.

Bye Bye to Najeh
He may make it to camp but he’ll never make it through preseason. I think Russell might have to go on the practice squad as well. It would be tough to carry 4 RBs on the roster, especially when you consider that Davis can play there too.
WR will be an interesting position to keep an eye on. Wilson is gone but two guys are going to be added to the roster. Dixon would never make it to the practice squad so they’ll have to keep him on the roster. I’d have to think Reid is gone pretty quick and Baker will probably slide into the non-dressing roster spot.
There will have to a OL gone as well, probably Mahan.

Najeh for sure
He was never the answer to replace the Bus, so I’m thinking that Mendenhall should be quite an upgrade. Depending on Parker’s health, Mendenhall may become our feature back within a year or two. Reid may get cut, too, since it looks like he has no chance of contributing at KR or PR anymore.
