Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Sleeper Pick

I think the pick from our draft that might have some real overall value is Ryan Mundy.  I think this is a guy that can truely play - he started as a true freshman at Michigan in 2003.  He started the following season as well and during his Junior year he ended up getting hurt and having to Redshirt.  After his Redshirt Junior season he transferred to WVU.  The year before his arrival the D wasn't very good - last year with Mundy at Safety they ended up being one of the top five.  In his final game when WVU blew out OU Mundy ended up with 11 tackles.  We've had some issues in the defensive backfield the past few years.  I really think Mundy might be able to help out and turn into a valuable backup who sees the field in some nickel/dime situations.

question

Does anyone know why he transferred? I’ve heard he was injured but I’ve yet to hear someone explain why he transferred. I would assume he lost his starting job but no one has mentioned that.

Great Article

This article tells you exactly what happened – there was basically a rule that has since been rescinded that allowed fourth year players to transfer for a fifth year.

Enjoy.

but why

I understand the rule that allowed him to transfer but I haven’t heard why he transferred. In my mind he took a risk going to a new school and learning a new system. It just seems like he wouldn’t do that unless he had a decent reason (i.e. he lost his starting job, fallout w/ coaching staff). The only even partial explanation I’ve seen is in this article and all it says is he “needed a fresh start.” You normally don’t need a ‘fresh start’ unless if everything is all good.

Yeah

As a Michigan man I can back that up…he was the starter and then got injured and medical reshirted. After the redshirt, he was the second-string FS on the depth chart, didn’t like it, and transferred.

Sucked for us, good for WVU.

Huh

Ok my friend – this was all I was able to gather. Talked to my WVU bud. Apparently Mundy was pretty pissed off after he started for 2.5 years and then got benched after his injury. WVU originally recruited him and they had a great shot at making a run – so he transferred. Once he got there he took the starting job from a Senior. In any case I think he’s a good addition.

ahh ok

I figured he must have lost the starting spot. I’m sure it’s a common if a younger guy is closet to the same caliber player. Glad things worked out for him though.

Graduate School

Per the Trib article he was also able to get his graduate degree in his college major (Sports Management). Michigan doesn’t have this graduate degree program. He’s a very smart ballplayer who now has a graduate degree that will allow him to get a better job in the future, remember how did he know he would be drafted by the pros. I just hope his physical playing skills match up to his mental skills, because if they do I have to agree that we may have a “steal”.

Corrections to Graduate School

I may have been reading the article “through a glass darkly). The graduate program was in Athletic Coaching not Sports Management and I haven’t been able to find out if he got the graduate degree. However he did graduate from Michigan. Either way he is still smart.

Mundy

Sounds like a solid guy. Ryan Clark anyone?
