Great Write up About the Steelers...

Draft keeps Steelers a leg up in AFC North

What a great article by the Sporting News' Vinny Iyer.  He really highlights why the Steelers are the Steelers, and the Brown's are the Brown's.

I thought it also made me feel better about our Past Drafts and give more reassurance about the 08' draft.

"Just look at some of their projected starters this season. Tight end Heath Miller, left guard Chris Kemoeatu, wide receiver Santonio Holmes, right tackle Willie Colon, inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons, outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley and punter Daniel Sepulveda were drafted over the three previous Aprils. Several other recent draftees are in place as key backups and future replacements. "

good read

Been meaning to put together a collection of various writers responses to our draft, but I think we’re kinda getting a good sense of what people think here and there through shared links like this one.

Is it fucking September yet?

Is It Freakin' July Yet!?

Mini camp right around the corner now that May has arived. I’m excited for Arians, Ben, Santonio, McFadden, Kemo, Woodley and Timmons to take a step up. I’m looking for contributions from Mendenhall, Limas and Mewelde. I’m hoping for a healthy Aaron Smith, Troy and FWP. They play the toughest schedule in the NFL. I wanted trench help in the draft but agree with the FO that you can’t reach.

Browns Starting Roster Ages:

QB: 24
WR: 24, 27
TE: 24
OL: 23, 28, 30, 32/26, 28
FB: 24

DL: 27, 29, 26
LB: 24, 24, 29, 28
C: 22, 22
S: 26, 23

Anyone who considers them anything but one of the youngest teams in football is crazy. Not to mention that they most likely will have two first rounders next year (to bridge the “gap” made from this year). My point is that it is patently false to describe their activity as “win now at the expense of the future.”

That being said, the Steelers are certainly the favorites going into this year and are loaded w/ young players at some of the most important positions (outside of the lines). Hopefully it’s shaped up to be a good rivalry again for the forseeable future.

I hope your right

I’m young enough that I’ve never even seen this be a legitimate rivalry. I hope it’s a tooth and nail, back and for battle for years to come. I’m all for watching good football.

"I hope it’s a tooth and nail, back and for battle for years to come. "

Not me. I’m a creature of habit. I like seeing the Steelers stomp ‘em twice a year. Maybe three times this year! Somebody around here said it best when they mused that there are grown children that had never witnessed the Browns beat the Steelers.

Actually, the Browns are to be at least respected these days unfortunately.

I’m trying not to be giddy about last Saturday, but I can’t help being optimistic about our first day picks. It’s just great seeing the Steelers with what should be a great running tandem. Our biggest problem last year in my opinion (other than crappy starts) was not being able to bleed a team out on the ground. The schedule doesn’t seem as bad anymore.

"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."

good thoughts

It really was painful watching us fail at trying to run out the clock. So un-Steelers like. We SHOULD be able to be a versatile, unpredictable offense AND be able to run out the clock with the running game when necessary. I like our chances much better now to do so.

Remember 2004 when we went 15-1? We did that for a few reasons.

1. Bettis/Staley – We could run the clock out with ease
2. Roethlisberger – Gave us a lead early
3. We actually could pick the ball off and force a lot more turnovers. Last year we had 11 INTs and 25 FF. 2004 we had 28 FF and 19 INTs
4. Our older defensive guys currently were in there prime in 2004.

hmm..

A lot of those young bucks will be looking to sign big money 2nd contracts, and its tuff to sign em all. But I do think they will be a solid team for a least a few more years.
