Steelers Historically..and More
Bumped. Good stuff Jason. - Blitz-
This is my latest article that includes a bunch of random thoughts and statements. I have our historic ranks on both Defense and Offense, to prove that our team is always in pretty good shape.
Some say our Defense "Isn't what it used to be" right after we finished number one in yards allowed and number 2 in points. Our defense collapsed down the stretch for one reason - Athleticism. Our Linebackers, the core of the 3-4 are SLOW. If we had faster Linebackers we would have beaten the Jags in the playoff game. Scrambling/mobile Quarterbacks will always haunt us unless we add athleticism and speed to our Linebacker Corps.
Our Pass Defense, believe it or not, is very good. We had the best Completion % (54.5), and the best YPA (5.3). We acheived these ranks while having an average pass rush. That is really impressive. Outside of Taylor and Polamalu, we do not have anyone else that is really good.
Continuing, we do have one hole on our team, the Offensive Line. Our Defensive Line depth is becoming a problem, but our DLine is still a strength. Our great run stopping ability has a lot more to do with our Linebackers and DLine taking the right angles, then it does pure run stuffing strength. If one of our DLineman get injured again, I am confident our Run D will still be rather good. The playoff loss to Jacksonville proves that. Our personnel that day was the same for the previous few weeks, but somehow we shut the jags run game down. Our players were being smarter that day and not over pursuing.
Our Linebackers will become a strength this year with Woodley taking over for Haggans. Woodley is not fast, but he is much stronger and bigger then Haggans making him harder to block.
Timmons - The key to our defense this year. If we want to be a great team in the clutch , something that we were bad at last year, this guy needs to see the field. He is fast, and will be great in coverage and our ILB blitzes that cross in the middle will be much more effective if we have a fast linebacker.
Bruce Davis - Think Woodley last year. He probably will not have as many sacks(4) as Woodley last year, but I think he will come through with a big one somewhere as long as he gets playing time.
As the title suggests, I am going to take a look at some of the Steelers historic ranks both defensively and offensively.
Defense - Since 1970
22 times in the top 10 in Points Allowed
2 times ranking 20th or above in Points Allowed
25 times in the top 10 in Yards Allowed
3 times ranking 20th or above in Yards Allowed
Offense - Since 1970
19 times in the top 10 in Points Scored
5 times ranking 20th or above in Points Scored
16 times in the top 10 in Yards
10 times ranking 20th or above in Yards
*Keep in mind, most of our bad Ranks came in the 80's.
Obviously we are a defensive team so our D ranks will be better. However, our offense is just as potent. Only reason our O ranks aren't as good is because it is easier to score by throwing the ball, and we are primarily a running team.
The point of displaying our historic ranks is the fact that our front office knows what they are doing. We are consistently a playoff team and Super Bowl contender. When was the last time you went into a season not expecting to get atleast 8 wins?
Here are some more facts concerning our Offensive Line
First 8 weeks of the season, Ben was sacked only 19 times. The second 8 weeks, Ben was sacked 31 times(This includes the playoff game since Ben didn't play the season Finale)
New England, a very good team had only 3 sacks. They are a very good scheming team and tough opponent, but only recorded 3 sacks compared to the Jets and the Dolphins, two of the worst teams, who recorded the highest sack totals against us.
By looking at our sack totals in every game, there is clearly no certain scheme(3-4 or 4-3), or strength of opponent that gives us trouble.
Also, I have not seen a lot of people talk about this: Remember how in training camp, Tomlin was really pushing our guys much more than Cowher ever did? Maybe that is why we had injuries down the stretch and faded record wise. Cowher didn't push our guys as much, and that is why we always started off slower then got on fire much later in the season into the playoffs. I would like to see Tomlin refer back to what Cowher did and not push the players as much.
I will always be optimistic about the Steelers chances because this team has a proven track record. Even with a horrible Offensive Line, we still went 10-6. Out of the 13 teams with the highest sack totals, the Steelers were the only team to make the playoffs.
In 2006, we were ranked 27th in turnover differential, and still went 8-8. We were ranked near Oakland(2-14), Cleveland(4-12), Tampa Bay(4-12), Detroit(3-13), Seattle(9-7), Washington(5-11), Carolina(8-8).
As you can see, the Steelers were very good for how often they turned the ball over in 2006. Most teams who turn the ball over this much range around 4-12. Only the Seahawks, and Panthers were pretty good for turning the ball over a lot.
At the end of the day I know the Steelers will still be in the playoff picture into late December, no matter how bad our Offensive Line is.

I can't help but be optimistic, too
First, good post.
Second, there’s a lot to like about this roster. The upcoming season’s going to be a challenge (scary, scary schedule), but year two of Tomlin excites me and I see a 53-man that I can get excited about, even if the projection on both the D- and O-lines are scary in ‘09 and beyond.

Add to Jason's Good Work
The fact that in the NFL things can get fixed (or go downhill) very quickly. Those of us (me) who think the Steelers may have neglected defensive line this Draft should think about how the Browns completely reversed their offensive last year with one free agent and one draft pick, and then addressed the defensive line this year with two trades.
The Steelers can pick up just one defensive lineman in the next free agency and then draft one fairly high and all the sudden we’re not worries anymore. Same with offensive line. say next year we draft a great corner first, a couple lineman and pick one up in free agency, voila!

DaTruth Lives On
Hey, Steelers Nation, What’s Happening!
A couple of comments about the Steelers rookie free agents:
- DaTruth don’t know much about any of them. However, here are a couple of things that I do like.
- Here are the numbers for 6’5, 217 lb. WR Micah Rucker’s Pro Day. Two 40s at 4.57 and 4.47 (the latter is great for someone that size), a 39-inch vertical jump, an 11-foot, 3-inch long jump, 4.57 short shuttle, 6.90 cone drill and 20 reps in the bench press. Can you say ATHLETE?
If those numbers still don’t get your attention, he torched the Cardinal’s 1st round pick – CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie – for two touchdown when they played. He seems to be a guy with good character and is coming to the Steelers as a free agent with a BIG chip on his shoulders. He said in an article that I read that his numbers compare to any wide receiver in this draft and all he wants is an opportunity.
http://blogs.trb.com/sports/football/ncaa_blog/2008/04/draft_this_guy_micah_rucker.htm
Well opportunity, granted.
- I say here that the Steelers could keep 3 rookie WR’s - Sweed, Rucker and Dorien Bryant (could be the team’s return man). That would give them 5 WRs and 1 return specialist, as was the roster setup from this past year. If Rucker shows anything, the Steelers won’t be able to stash him on the practice squad. Big WR’s are the rage in the NFL right now, and he’ll be scooped up. With Nate Washington probably leaving next year and Ward doing the same in about 2 years, while not keep him around if he shows something?
- Also, here are the Pro Day numbers on DE Kyle Clement from Northwood University. He was measured at 6’4’’, 316 lbs, ran a 5.21 40-yard-dash, bench 225 pounds 37 times… yes, 37 times, and had a vertical of 29.5 inches. His arm length was 32.2 inches (kind of short for a DE,), hand size was 10 inches, short shuttle was 4.54, 3-cone was 7.54 and broad jump was 8 feet, 11 inches. Again, these numbers show that he has some athleticism. Whether he’s a player or not, DaTruth doesn’t have a clue. At least DL coach John Mitchell has something to work with.
If this guy shows anything, he could also stick along with Rucker. Nick Eason is a little bit less than useless, and if any of the 3 DE free agents show anything, they could grab a spot. Ryan “Steely” McBean is nothing the team can count on because he’s been on crutches lately because of astress fracture and did zilch last year.
One help to the DL could come right around training camp, when I believe Booger McFarland will be cleared by the Steelers doctors and become that rusher on 3rd down that the Steelers DL could use inside.
- The return spot will come down between Jeremy Bloom, Willie Reid, and Dorien Bryant. Reid has 2 strikes against him because (1) he can’t catch punts and (2) he will be the highest paid of the 3 this year, being a 3rd round pick while the others are free agents. This will be interesting to follow as whomever makes it will also have to have the ability to play the slot, too. I think Reid can be a good slot receiver, but Bryant has led the Big Ten in receiving the past 2 years as well as doing what he does on returns. If I’m Willie, I might be renting in the Burg rather than buying.
- Blitzburg, like Jay-Z, “What you want me to say, I’m sorry. I’m back! So, show me what you got!” Steelers Nation.

Pushing the team
Jason, not to take credit for myself(but I guess I will a little:), I did bring this up a couple of weeks ago. But, I was talking about something that I saw Rod Woodson bring up on the NFLN. He said that Tomlin had the team practicing harder than probably every other team in the league last year. Sometimes a new coach needs to do that to establish themselves, especially if they are following a winner. I hope, like you, that Tomlin will revert back to that some this year, because the team needs to be peaking at the end of the year, not the beginning. Of course, you also want to start out well, but if you have a choice, ending well is better.

Yea
I just haven’t heard very many people talk about this. I mean once you think about it, the Steelers rarely have season ending injuries to any players. Last year we had Parker, Aa. Smith, Starks, M. Smith, Clark etc all injured for the rest of the year. When was the last time we had that many guys on IR or gone for the season?
Last time I remember that happening was 2004 with Hampton. Can anyone else remember the last time one of our star players or even one of our good players were put on IR before last year?
Just thinking about that makes you even more optimistic for this year. We had all these injuries and still went 10-6(Could of gone 11-5 had Ben played the finale). Thats why I think next year with a tough schedule but no major injuries we could easily finish 10-6 again.

I can't say I've been keeping track
but I did think that we had some injuries here and there the 3 years before last year. I guess just not season ending. I know what I’ve been thinking of: it seems like we have had Ben, Hines, and then Willie, Bus, and Duce all banged up at various times over the last few years but have usually been able to keep it going, because we had Batch to step in for Ben, Randle El for Hines, and at least one those 3 RBs was healthy.
