Steelers Vs Penguins ?

Bob Smizik of the PG has written an article claiming that the Penguins may be in position to surpass the Steelers as Pittsburgh's favorite team.

I'm not sure what to make of this. I haven't lived in the Burgh for years so I don't know if what he says makes any sense. The accompanying poll has most fans disagreeing, but by a much smaller margin than I would have suspected. I have to also say that Smizik isn't one of my favorites. I remember when he was covering my high school football games. And that was a loooonnng time ago. And I wasn't crazy about his ideas back then either.

Now don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against the Pens. In fact, I watched much of their game last night and am pumped about their playoff prospects. Love the team and have been a big Mario fan. I suspect I'll be big on Crosby as well as the years go on. But to suggest that they will surpass the Steelers in the hearts of Pittsburgh fans (especially while the Steelers continue to field highly competitive teams) smells of sacrilege. What do you all think?

no way

Nothing will surpass the Steelers in the hearts of Pittsburgh fans. But that doesnt much matter. There’s room for both. Sounds like a piece written at the heighth of Penguins fever to me.

There certainly is a lot to like about the young Penguins though.

No, they won't.

I love the Pens, as do a lot here, but this is Steelers country.

Back to back championships

If the Penguins didn’t surpass the Steelers after winning back to back championships with the Steelers having spent much of the 80s in mediocrity or worse, they aren’t going to surpass them now. Steelers just won a SB a couple of years ago. You may have enthusiasm similar to that shown for the Steelers, but not greater.

I don’t know, the idea doesn’t make sense at all really. Loving the Pens wouldn’t diminish a fans love of the Steelers.

Conversation starters

Pieces like that are written to provoke the audience. Thrilled with the Pens though we all are right now, there’s no real ‘debate’ to be had here.

But there are newspapers to be sold. Which is why articles like these are as old as the industry itself.

On a Penguins note:

Every time I hear someone complaining about Sidney Crosby getting preferential treatment, I’m going to remember this “no-goal” call.

Wow

Great shot Desroko. I was watching that and couldn’t believe they didn’t award it even with the angles I saw, but this is definitely conclusive.
