Final Draft Grades from Your's Truly
Round 1
Rashard Mendenhall RB Illinois 5-10 224lbs GRADE: B+
Adds a great weapon in our backfield, will do well to compliment Fast Willie with his speed and power. Plus he's not even 21 so in say 3-4 years, when Willie is starting to get up there in years, (He'll be 31) Mendenhall won't even be 25, still giving us a youthful running back.
Round 2
Limas Sweed WR Texas 6-4 212lbs GRADE: B+
Excellent pick, adds the big target Big Ben wanted. Has a great work ethic, attitude, and is a humble receiver in a class of premedonnas. Has great hands(can make the one-handed grab), great vertical jumping, and a very tough physical wide receiver. Will be a dynamic receiver as long as he stays healthy and produces well. Bottom Line: A first rounder drafted in the late second round.
Round 3
Bruce Davis DE/OLB UCLA 6-2 252lbs GRADE: C-
Unnecessary pick, but shows great promise as a pass-rushing linebacker. Has a Joey Porter-like attitude but is far from a class act. Has shown poor sportsmanship, and is nowhere near a role model. The bottom line is that he adds youth and depth to our linebacking core and will have to change his attitude if he ever wants to be successful as a Steeler. Personally I would've used this pick to get an offensive lineman.
Round 4:
Tony Hills OT Texas 6-6 305lbs GRADE: C+
Solid pick. As our only drafted lineman in a draft that many had us taking multiple linemen, he will have large expectations in the next few years expectations he may or may not be able to fill. Is more of a second to third round talent, but a fractured leg last year hurt his stock.
Round 5:
Dennis Dixon QB/WR Oregon 6-3 206 lbs GRADE: C+
Good pick. Gives us depth at QB. Can also play as a receiver, but will most likely line up behind Charlie Batch.
Round 6a.:
Mike Humpal LB Iowa 6-3 244lbs GRADE: D+
adds depth to linebacking core.
Round 6b. (from Giants):
Ryan Mundy S West Virginia 6-1 205lbs GRADE: D+
Adds Depth, to secondary.
OVERALL GRADE: B-B+
Very good draft addressing many offensive positions. Look for them to focus more on lines and secondary for the next two or three drafts.

Well
I am not sure off the top of my head when Parkers contract expires, but I believe it is after 2009? I do not believe he will be resigned then. Mainly because we have Mendenhall.
I love the Mendenhall pick because as you say he is only 20 years old. He could become a starter at age 23 at the earliest I believe.
I disagree with the Davis pick. He is a very necessary pick and perhaps a steal. His production in college was very good. Harrison isnt exactly young, so he will take over for him after his contract is up. He provides very good depth. If James gets injured were in trouble, but not now since we have Davis.
I think your grades are based upon whether that guy is good or not. When grading a pick, you need to think about whether he will fill an important roster spot or be an upgrade over who we have. All the guys we drafted should be an upgrade over certain backups we already have. And I believe all of them will make the team. Only guy I think might not is Humpal.
But if all of our guys make the team, the draft grade gets an A. But until then its always hard to grade a draft.
Mendenhall upgrades Davenport, and Russell.
Sweed upgrades over Washington(Who I like unlike most people)
Davis upgrades over Arnold Harrison and the other OLBs we have as backups.
Hills should upgrade over Essex, maybe Starks.
Dixon upgrades over Batch(Eventually), and definitely St. Pierre who we always sign to hold the clipboard
Humpal upgrades over Kreidwalt who was cut.
Mundy upgrades over Carter.
But the thing is we can say these guys are great but until they do it on the field in the NFL, we can just hope they were as good as they were in College.

Well 2
I don’t believe we can grade the draft until we see these players on the field. Mendenhall pulls a hammy in the first practice (like Timmons last year) and we’re ready to give him an A and send FWP packing? (quote; “2009, I don’t believe he will be signed.” I agree 34 appears to be an upgrade over Davenport but last year proved that teams that run the ball need a couple good backs. See Bettis/Parker. If Mendenhall is everything you say then I see them STILL offereing FWP a contract in 2009. The Rooney’s won’t overpay him but will offer him a contract.
While I agree that Sweed MAY be an upgrade over Nate (Sweed hasn’t caught 1 pass yet) and Davis could be an upgrade over Arnold Harrison, Marquis Cooper and Andre Frazier (Davis was a DL in college not a LB) it is too soon to tell. What I don’t agree with is calling Hills (injured) an upgrade over Essex and Starks. Dude, Starks is a starting RT on a Super Bowl winner and started at LT last year as well when Smith went down. Essex played LT in a playoff game and looked decent. You’re ready to grade an injured Hills over Starks (7 million a year) and Essex? Dixon who is coming off an ACL injury and may go IR this year is rated above Batch? Humpal (who might not make the team) is an upgrade over cagey veteran Krierwalt? How do you know? Same with Mundy.
All in all I am disappointed that the Steelers did not address their number 1 needs in the trenches but I am happy that they didn’t reach and took good prospects. The problem is many of them are coming off injuries (Sweed, Dixon, Mundy, Hills) and one is freshly injured (Mendenhall) so I think it is a bit premature to state a rookie is an upgrade over a proven veteran before practice in Latrobe even begins.

Starks
Was our worst offensive Lineman on one of the worst OLines in 2006. This last year he appeared good at LT for a few games because the speed rushers he faced were neutralized by the swamp the Steelers play in at Heinz Field. In 2005, most pople think our Line was good. But in fact we allowed 1 sack every 11 attempts compared to around 8, 9 attempts per sack last year.
Our pass blocking in 05 was better, but still very bad. Our run blocking was better though. And Starks making 7 million a year means nothing about his abilities.
Why would Dixon go on IR? And Kreidwalt should of been cut along time ago. We need players who can come in and play on the defense as backups. Its nice to have a good special teams player, but I prefer someone that can play decent as a starter for a game or two a year if need be as well as be good on special teams.
I dont know much about Mundy. But either way, after the draft everyone grades players based on them in college. So I am not a fan of grading them. But I think all of our guys will make the team.

FWP
I would hope that we re-sign Willie to a 3 or 4 year deal after this one, preferably 3. Also, I would hope that we lock up Mendenhall for at least 4, preferably 5 years. That would give us both for the next 4-5 years, and Mendenhall would be entering the end of his rookie contract as Willie’s career is winding down.
It would also be nice if the fact that he’s taking Mendenhall under his wing, as mention in another FanPost, would mean that Willie is willing to stick around at a real market value as his skills begin to diminish, instead of looking to get overpaid and fail somewhere else.

Perhaps
It would be great to sign Parker to that 3 or 4 year deal and be our “Change of pace” back alot of people want him to be. However I dont think after making multiple pro bowls, he will want to be a backup.

Not as backup
I envisioned that Parker would continue to be the starter during his next contract, at least the first couple of years of it. He may want to go elsewhere, but it’s possible that he takes the Bettis approach.

Another topic...
Limas Sweed
Well personally I think that this kid, assuming he isn’t a bust, (very good chance that he isn’t) could be our no. 2 receiver by next year. Obviously, he won’t be this year unless there are major injuries I mean he’s a rookie. But by next year I think there’s a chance he could surpass Holmes. Holmes, as you all recall, was our 1st round pick in 2006. He played well in his rookie year and his higlight of the season was when he ended the Bungles hopes for a playoff birth. However, there have been questions to Holmes’ character. Now, I don’t think there are many problems between him and the players, but his off the field stuff is not acceptable. Back in ‘06 he was arrested for hitting his girlfriend and this offseason there have been rumors of him “exposing” himself on the internet. Holmes’ ability is very good, but his attitude and lack in dyanmic ability (getting the jump ball) are problems. He’s more of a deep threat, who can burn receivers long but can’t win any jump balls. Sweed can do all of this and has great character. Eventual no.2 in my book.

Holmes
was probably our real no. 1 this past year. if anything Sweed will become no. 2 as Ward ages and Ward becomes no. 3 (a couple more years away though), following a Troy Brown like career. Holmes is a legit no. 1 receiver, and has some of the best numbers in the league.
