Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

shane olivea?

This guy was heralded as one of the better linemen out there just one year ago. Now that he has been cut, why aren't the steelers interested in him?

From what I read, it might be he got a big payday and his play dropped off, then again, it could be he clashed with the coaching style of turner.

I think the steelers benefit from bringing this guy in, and if the fire is still there, this is a team and coaching stuff- with a chance for redemption- that could get the most out of him again.

Who is he?

Maybe I should know, but the name doesn’t ring a bell.

former

starting RT for the Chargers. he was very solid two seasons ago when the Chargers went 14-2. fell off this year and lost his starting job.

Interesting

He was just 2 seasons into a 6 year deal worth 20 million. He’s got 57 career starts in 60 games. He was injured last season and only started 10 games, so that may have something to do w/ him getting cut. Before 07 though he started every game except one since his rookie season, and he was a 7th round pick.

Not to mention he’s only 26. Not sure why he’s on the street but he won’t be for long.

he's good

INteresting find vherub. I certainly wouldnt mind if we picked him up. I wonder what his price tag would be.

Seems like they would have had a big cap hit

to cut him this early in the contract. That makes me think he must have something seriously wrong. But, the FO needs to at least contact him, and have him in for a physical. If he’s good, he may be out of our price range.

might be right

I think you’re right about this guy getting cut for doing something wrong. They had to have taken a big cap hit for it and it’s not like it happened last week. He was cut on February 29th. I wonder what he did to not have a contract by now?

I wasn't even thinking off the field

I just thought his skills must have been seriously diminished after his injury.

he had requested to be released

As stated here:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20080229-9999-1s29chargers.html

and lost his starting job in 07 to Clary. It doesn’t look like he was as big a cap hit, with much of his money being paid in 07. I still think he is worth bringing in as much, if not more than the next guy. Here is another article on him in the weeks before he was released:

He should be worth looking at

but, I’m not sure that he would be much help to us. The second article talks about him being a better guard than tackle. He could be Faneca’s replacement, if that’s true but as a tackle:

The switch should mask Olivea’s most glaring deficiency: his inability to handle speed rushers off the edge.

Don’t we already have tackles with that problem?
