D-Line schematics

I've been reading all the posts round here and thinking more and more about the d-line for next year.  It's no news to anyone that we're incredibly shallow at that position currently.  Aaron goes down and our rushing defense goes from best in the league to near the bottom.  And no real improvement was added in the offseason.  So it left me pondering what the FO and Tomlin are doing here?  So in hypothetical I tried to think of what might be going through the Steelers minds and came up with one plan that made sense to me...

Incorporation of a lot of 4-3 alignments.  Especially if we pick up McFarland once he clears medical.  This would give us the following d-tackles (I think) Hampton, Hoke, Smith, McFarland.  For ends: Keisel, Woodley, Davis, and I think Smith could swing both positions.

With linebackers the way I see it most naturally would be to put Timmons at MLB because of his athleticism he'd be best for covering that middle zone of the cover 2.  Farrior swings to Strong side OLB and Harrison takes the WOLB.

Personally I love the way the 3-4 works, but I also like making an offense prepare for both, and I could see this year as an opportunity to really confuse offenses.

What do you guys think?  Again, it doesn't seem like Tomlin cares about the exact alignment so much as the philosophy.  What do you guys think?  Just some random football thoughts as we enter in to the long dark of spring and summer.

Couple thoughts

First, I seem to remember some people saying that we often have alignments that mimic a 4-3, where one of the OLBs comes up to the line and put’s his had on the ground. So I could see something like this working.

The other point is that Aaron Smith wasn’t back for the playoff game, yet our run D stepped up that game and shut them down. That tells me that they could actually have a decent run D without Smith in there. The rest of the players just have to step up and make it happen. There may have been some adjustments made for that game as well. So, we at least have the ability to stop the run, whether it always happens or not. I also have some hopes that at least one of these UDFAs can show something and help us out.

DL

If McFarland is able to play for us, we could have half decent depth. He’s not the usual 3-4 DE type, but he’s a big body and could play well against the pass and run. I don’t think Tomlin cares about the 4-3 as much as people say he does, and our personnel lines up more with the 3-4. You’re right that we might have better depth at DT playing 4-3, but it’d be the pass rush and the LB’s that suffered there. Timmons could play WLB, but I doubt Harrison is enough of an athlete to play WLB or MLB. Also, there’s no guarantee that Woodley and Keisel could generate enough pressure playing rush ends every down.

As things are now, one of the biggest problems with our lack of depth is a lack of a good DL rotation. Hampton isn’t exactly Mr. Stamina, and Keisel wore down by the end of last year. Against our schedule, they are going to be tired unless Eason, McBean, and/or Booger play well enough to earn time in a rotation.

McFarland?

Does anyone know why he failed the physical, and what the likelihood is that he’ll be cleared by training camp? Could he simply be too old or beaten up to make the team, much less add value? Just wondering…

Keep in mind

Our DLine has pretty much no History of injuries.

Smith last year missed his first game since 1999 when he was a rookie. Hampton has played 15 or 16 games in every year except 04. Keisel has not missed a game since 2004.

By the looks of that, the chances of one of our big 3 going down to injury is very small.

True

but as players get older that risk increases.
